Mr. Robert Shaw

Mr. Robert L. Shaw, 72, of Braddock Road, Taylorsville, died Sunday, June 10, at Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore.

He was the husband of Ruth E. Condon Shaw.

Born Oct. 1, 1928, in Washington, he was the son of the late Rev. Clarence H. and Geneva Jones Shaw.

He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, Marston Road.

After graduation from high school, he worked on the family farm for several years until he became a technician for Maryland Artificial Breeding.

He was a member of Carpenters Local Union 1590 and worked in the Washington area for 26 years, retiring in 1990. He was a member of Carroll County Farm Bureau.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Robert C. Shaw and wife Beth K. of Mundelein, Ill., Ronald U. Shaw and wife Phyllis A. of Hereford, and Randall B. Shaw and wife Maria A. of Taylorsville; one brother, Andrew J. Shaw of Westminster; and eight grandchildren, Robbie, Madeleine, Brooke, Ryan, Kelsey, Rebecca, Danny and Alicia Shaw.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Harry C., William Harvey and David E. Shaw.

Friends may call at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield, on Tuesday, June 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday, June 13, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 14, at St. James United Methodist Church, 2900 Marston Road, with the Rev. Larry M. Plymire, of St. James, and the Rev. Philip Kemper, of Delta, Pa., officiating.

Interment will be in St. James United Methodist Church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be sent to St. James United Methodist Church, c/o Catherine Day, treasurer, 3632 Ridge Road, Westminster, Md. 21157.

Mrs. Lillian Record
Dated: Tuesday, June 12, 2001.
Mrs. Lillian Marie Record, 81, of Mount Airy, died Sunday, June 10, at her home.

She was the wife of Robert C. Record, her husband of 59 years.

Born May 15, 1920, in Sharon, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Simmons.

She was a hospital attendant for King's Park State Hospital in King's Park, N.Y.

She enjoyed crafts, especially ceramics and knitting.

She was a member of Eastern Star, and Pete's Pals Coach and R.V. Club.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, Kenneth A. Record of Mount Airy, Jacqueline Hope Hetterly and husband John of Frederick, and Gerald W. Record of Aurora, Col.; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by one son, Robert C. Record Jr.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 14, with the Rev. Flo Ledyard, of St. James Episcopal Church, officiating.

Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Episcopal Church, 202 N. Main St., Mount Airy, Md. 21771.

Mr. John Sulenka
Dated: Friday, April 6, 2001.
Mr. John Dimitri Sulenka, 75, of 8616 Wiles Court, Middletown, died Thursday, April 5, at his home.

He was the husband of Helen Sulenka.

Born Aug. 17, 1925, in Bronx, N.Y., he was a son of the late Michael and Axania Sulenka.

Mr. Sulenka was employed as a construction superintendent and later as building inspector in New Jersey. He was a member of Carpenters Union No. 225, Red Bank, N.J.

He had lived in Howell, N.J. for 35 years, prior to moving to Middletown in 1986.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, Victoria Howe and husband Gerald of Fairfield, Pa., Nina Hicks and husband Kenneth of Manassas, Va., and Jonnie Peake and husband Chuck of Urbana; seven grandchildren, Steven Howe, Gerry Jon Howe, Ryan Hicks, Tammy Farlow, Annabelle Peake, Zachery Peake, and Jonathan Peake; and one sister, Leda Kereluk of California.

Services and interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, Md. 21705-0799, or Middletown Volunteer Fire Co., Middletown, Md. 21769.

Arrangements are by Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, Middletown.

Mr. Howard Stottlemyer
Dated: Friday, April 6, 2001.
Mr. Howard G. Stottlemyer, 88, of Glenside Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, April 3, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

He was the husband of Edna R. Snyder Stottlemyer, who died in 1997.

Born July 17, 1912, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Elmer Charles and Minerva Alta Kline Stottlemyer.

He was a 1931 graduate of Hagerstown High School; a 1933 graduate of Columbia Business College; and a 1944 graduate of Towson State Teachers College.

He retired in 1976 as a payroll clerk for Western Maryland Railway. He worked part time at Eyerly's, The Bon-Ton, and Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home for 22 years.

He was a member of Christ's Reformed Church United Church of Christ and the consistory.

He was a member of Friendship Lodge 84 A.F.&A.M.; past master and past high priest of Ithiel Royal Arch Chapter 27; past thrice illustrious master of Palestine Council 16 R & SM; past commander of St. Bernard Commandery 9 KT; right eminent past grand commander of Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Maryland in 1985; a member of Knights of the York Cross of Honor Francis Scott Key 14; Maryland York Rite College 58; Maryland Council 9 Knight Masons; Hagerstown Forest 95 Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Super Excellent Masters Degree Concordia 1; Ish-Sodi Cryptic Rite of Freemasonry; Queen Esther Chapter 3 Order of the Eastern Star; and Washington County Hospital Auxiliary.

He was an honorary Kentucky Colonel.

He is survived by one niece, Letitia Belle Schlotterbeck of Mount Airy; two nephews, Lynn R. Stottlemyer of Bowie, and Erman Stottlemyer; two great-nieces; three great-nephews; great-great-nieces and -nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Eva N. Stottlemyer and Irene C. Diebert; and three brothers, Earmin Stottlemyer, George H. Stottlemyer and Myrle Stottlemyer.

The family will receive friends Friday, April 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown, where a Masonic memorial service will be conducted by Friendship Lodge 84 A.F.&A.M. at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 7 at the funeral home. The Rev. Don R. Stevenson will officiate.

Interment will be in Manor Church cemetery in Tilghmanton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Christ's Reformed Church United Church of Christ, 130 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Mr. Douglas Hardin
Dated: Friday, April 6, 2001.
Mr. Douglas Schuyler Hardin, 86, of 9440 Slate Quarry Road, Hyattstown, died Thursday, April 5, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

He was the husband of Anne Linthicum Hardin, whom he married Aug. 5, 1938.

Born June 8, 1914, in Mauckport, Ind., he was a son of the late William W. and Angie Douglas Hardin.

Mr. Hardin was a member of Hyattstown United Methodist Church. He was a lieutenant with the Washington Fire Department until his retirement in 1965. He was a member of the Retired Firefighters Association of Washington. He took great interest in Civil War activities and Civil War paraphernalia.

Active in Masonic circles, he was a member of Columbia Lodge No. 58 A.F.&A. Masons, Enoch Royal Arch Chapter 23, Enoch Council 10 Royal & Select Masters, Jacques deMolay Commandery 4 Knights Templar, 32nd degree member Chesapeake Consistory Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite and Almas Temple AAONM Shrine.

Surviving in addition to his wife are four children, Patricia McGraw of Laytonsville, Wayne D. Hardin and wife Anita of Glenwood, and Richard W. Hardin and wife Annabell, and Dwight S. Hardin and wife Shirley, all of Hyattstown; 12 grandchildren, Michael McGraw, Julie Kuehner, Shelia Lowe, Matthew McGraw, Lori Hardin, Craig Hardin, Leanne Hardin, Douglas Hardin, Janice Hardin, Daniel Hardin, Andrew Hardin and Bonnie Hardin; 10 great-grandchildren, Brittany, Ciara and Jacob McGraw, Megan and Brennen Kuehner, Ryan and Jessica Lowe, and Brannan, Wesley and Lacey McGraw.

Friends may call at Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Home, 1201 N. Market St., Frederick, from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 8. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Masonic memorial services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home by members of Columbia Lodge 58 A.F.&A. Masons of Frederick.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 9, at Hyattstown United Methodist Church, 26121 Frederick Road, Hyattstown, where friends may call from 9 a.m. until time of funeral services. Mr. Hardin's pastor, the Rev. Gary Morgan, will officiate.

Interment will be in Hyattstown cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of Hyattstown United Methodist Church, 26121 Frederick Road, Dickerson, Md. 20842.

Mr. Ernest Nelson Jr.
Dated: Friday, April 6, 2001.
Mr. Ernest Monroe "Sonny" Nelson Jr., 64, of Brownsville, died Wednesday, April 4, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

He was the husband of Norma E. Nelson, his wife of 24 years.

Born April 1, 1937, in Greensboro, N.C., he was a son of the late F. Viola Walker and Ernest M. Nelson Sr.

Mr. Nelson attended local schools. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was employed by Victor Ditto for over 20 years. He retired from Metropolitan Steel Inc., Frederick, in 1999.

Mr. Nelson was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Funkstown.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Lydia Nelson and Karen Jordon, both of Hagerstown, and Melleta Ingram of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; two sons, Harvey Nelson and Ernest M. Nelson III, both of Hagerstown; two stepdaughters, Idesta Mills of Mapleville, and Penny Bowers of Keedysville; two stepsons, David Mills and Shawn Mills, both of Boonsboro; two sisters, Frances Ecton and Barbara King, both of Funkstown; seven grandchildren; and seven stepgrandchildren.

Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by an infant son, Larry Nelson.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 6, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, where funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, April 7, with the Rev. Darrell L. Layman officiating.

Interment will be in Rest Haven cemetery, Hagerstown.

Memorial donations may be made to either St. Paul's Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 148, Funkstown, Md. 21734, or the American Cancer Society, Washington County Unit, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Mr. Earl Butts
Dated: Friday, April 6, 2001.
Mr. Earl Clifford Butts, 58, of 445 Summit Ave., Hagerstown, died Thursday, April 5, at his home.

Born May 6, 1942, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was a son of the late Robert Earl Sr. and Edna Anna Frye Butts.

Mr. Butts was employed with Richard C. Kline Inc. in Frederick.

He attended Williamsport Assembly of God.

Surviving are two daughters, Darlene K. Dutrow and Sharon A. Tyler, both of Hagerstown; one son, Earl C. Butts Jr. of Hagerstown; one sister, Barbara S. Martz of Maugansville; four brothers, Robert E. Butts Jr. and Daniel Paul Butts, both of Grafton, W.Va., Gary W. Butts Sr. of Sharpsburg, and Charles I. Butts Jr. of Boonsboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Butts was preceded in death by one sister, Shirley Ellen Racey; and two brothers, Waymeth E. Butts Sr. and Ronnie Glen Butts Sr.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 8, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown.

The family will also receive friends from noon Monday, April 9, until time of funeral services at 1 p.m. Monday, at Williamsport Assembly of God, 15251 Falling Waters Road, Williamsport. The Rev. Daniel A. Jordan will officiate.

Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

Donations may be made to the family and sent to Sharon A. Tyler, 445 Summit Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Mrs. Phyllis Frey
Dated: Friday, April 6, 2001.
Mrs. Phyllis Mae Frey, 45, of Baltimore, died Wednesday, April 4, at Joseph Richey Hospice, Baltimore, after a brief illness.

She was the wife of Daniel F. Frey, her husband of four years.

Born Feb. 5, 1956, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth W. and Ann V. Gouker Otto.

She was a 1974 graduate of Franklin High School in Reisterstown and attended Catonsville Community College.

She was a member of St. Luke's Winters Lutheran Church, New Windsor.

She was employed with the former Merry-Go-Round Inc. of Joppatown for 20 years.

She enjoyed music, gardening and fishing.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Nevin J. Zepp and wife Christina of Hampstead; one sister, Annette L. Hernandez and husband Juan of Abingdon; two brothers, Robert K. Otto and wife Karen of Reisterstown, and Joseph E. Otto and wife Sherri of Manchester; and nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home, 310 Church St., New Windsor Friday, April 6, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 7, at St. Luke's Winters Lutheran Church with the Rev. Anne Durboraw, her pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in Pipe Creek cemetery, near Linwood.

Memorial contributions may be made to Joseph Richey Hospice, 828 N. Eutaw St., Baltimore, Md. 21201-4686.
