Mr. Michael Daugherty

Michael Stuart Daugherty, 58, of Adamstown, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, in California, Md.

Born March 23, 1950 in Baltimore, he was the son of the Rev. Charles "Chuck" Daugherty and Jessie (Wise) Daugherty of Leonardtown. Mike was a graduate of Great Mills High School and St. Mary's College.

In 2002, he relocated to Adamstown, but continued to commute to a part-time job as a defense contractor at Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Lexington Park, where he worked as a database engineer for Wyle Laboratories Inc.

Mike was a beloved husband, devoted father and loving son. He served on the board of trustees of Friends Meeting School in Ijamsville, and was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Sons of the Confederacy. He had also served on the vestry of the Church of the Ascension in Lexington Park, where he was married on May 23, 1984.

In addition to his parents, Mike is survived by his wife, Marie Baumeister Daugherty; son, John H. Daugherty of Adamstown; sister, Anne Miles of Hollywood, Md.; brother, Ray Daugherty of Loudonville, N.Y.; one niece; four nephews; and many other friends and family members.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, in St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 44078 St. Andrew's Church Road, California, MD 20619. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery with a reception afterwards at the church hall.

Memorial contributions may be made to Friends Meeting School, 3232 Green Valley Drive, Ijamsville, MD 21754.

Mrs. Anna Wathen

Anna Marie Wathen, 79, of Charles Town, W.Va., passed away Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va.

She was born Dec. 20, 1928, in Ungers Store, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late Claude William Funkhouser and Mary K. Davis Funkhouser.

Anna was of the Catholic faith.

She was a sales clerk with BonTon in Frederick.

Anna is survived by one daughter, Linda Sue Tressler and husband, Hammond, of Virginia Beach, Va.; four sons, J. Gwyn Wathen Jr. and wife, Cheryl Ann, of Charles Town, W.Va., George A. Wathen and wife, Therese, of Littleton, Colo., Charles W. Wathen and wife, Donna, of Boonsboro and Thomas M. Wathen and wife, Cindy, of Foxville; one sister, Betty Richards of Oldtown; one brother, Charles A. Funkhouser of Gold Beach, Ore.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, William C. Funkhouser.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, at the St. James Catholic Church in Charles Town, W.Va. The Rev. Fr. Brian Owens will be celebrant. Interment will be in Mount Hebron cemetery in Winchester, Va.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Eackles-Spencer and Norton Funeral Home, Charles Town/Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, Jefferson County Chapter, c/o Patty Ott, 145 Donald Drive, Charles Town, WV 25414.

Mrs. Hazel Shafer

Hazel Virginia Shafer, 86, of Middletown, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born April 6, 1922, she was the daughter of Lester Clinton and Nellie Catherine (Castle) Zimmerman.

She was the loving wife of 35 years to Harry Raymond Shafer, who passed away in 1973.

Mrs. Shafer was a lifelong member of Saint Matthew's Lutheran Church on Ballenger Creek Pike. She sang in the choir, and taught children's Sunday School for more than 50 years.

She was a member of the Ballenger Grange #341, Adamstown Homemakers, as well as serving as secretary of Ballenger Community Association for 11 years. As a retired senior, she enjoyed the Point of Rocks Food and Friends groups, Jefferson Food and Friends, and Feagaville Food and Friends, where she enjoyed the friendship of many people.

Mrs. Shafer worked at Frederick Tailoring Company, Walkersville Dress Factory and then at Microbiological Association together for a total of more than 35 years. She loved her garden and flowers and showed many items at community shows. She was a seamstress and loved to crochet. She also enjoyed visiting people in nursing homes. She loved to travel in the United States as well as overseas.

She was the mother of five children, Nellie Lee Virginia Easterday and husband Donald of Feagaville, Charlotte Louise Bowers and husband Edward H. of Mount Pleasant, David R. Shafer and wife Sandra of New Market, James Michael Shafer of Gaithersburg, and John Thomas Shafer and wife Tamyra S. of Keedysville.

She is also survived by two sisters, Bessie Jane Hemp and Julia Catherine Zimmerman. She is the grandmother of 13, Ruth Ellen Easterday, Thomas and Kenneth Easterday, Teresa Ann Martin, Michael and Christine Bowers, Andrea Lewis, Daniel, Joseph Justin, Eric, Natalie, and Rachel Shafer. She also had two great-granddaughters, Christiana Martin and Stacy Ellen Easterday. She will also be remembered by her two special neighbors, Gary and Debbie Weaver.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, at the Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. Officiating clergy will be Rev. Marina C. Flores of Saint Matthew's Lutheran Church, Ballenger Creek.

Interment will follow at the Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, Thomas Easterday, Kenneth Easterday, Michael Bowers, Daniel Shafer, Joseph Shafer, Justin Shafer, and Eric Shafer.

Memorial contributions may be made to her church, Saint Matthew's Lutheran Church, 4004 Ballenger Creek Pike, Frederick, MD 21703.

Mrs. Jane Zimmerman

Jane E. Zimmerman, long-time resident of Frederick and more recently of Wilmington, N.C., passed away Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008. She was the wife of G. Bernard Zimmerman Jr., who died in 1976.

Born Nov. 8, 1917 in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Alonza and Lafaesta Cannon Specht. She was also preceded in death by son-in-law, Charles Collins Jr.; two sisters, Gloria Horst and Yvonne Pettit; and brothers-in-law, Charles Edward (Bob) Veirtz and Richard Pettit.

Mrs. Zimmerman was employed by Frederick Memorial Hospital for many years and was a charter member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and remained active there until she moved to Wilmington four and half years ago.

She is survived by three children, Sherrill Collins of Bellbrook, Ohio, Sandra Denn and husband Al of Wilmington, N.C., B. Gregory Zimmerman and wife Carole of Frederick; six grandchildren, Michael Collins and wife Jennifer, Christina Martz and husband Frank, Dana Collins and partner Molly Talcott, G. Scott Zimmerman and fianc?e Nancy Herman, Jeffrey Zimmerman and wife Tara Funkhouser, and Julie Murphy and husband Johnny; step-grandchild, Michael Metz and wife June; and six great-grandchildren, Joshua and Luke Collins, Wyatt and Madison Garr, Gracie and Max Zimmerman; and three step-grandchildren, Ethan Martz, Chase and Brynn Metz. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara Veirtz of Chambersburg, Pa.; brother-in-law, Aaron Horst of Wilmington, N.C.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet cemetery. Following the committal service, there will be a reception by the family at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Community Room. Pastor Ron Reaves will officiate.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1415 W. Seventh St., Frederick or Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 2222 S. 17th St., Wilmington, NC 28401.

Mrs. Mildred Mathias

Mildred R. Mathias, 88, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, of Rockville, at the Golden Years Assisted Living and Respite Care Group Home in Mount Airy.

She was the daughter of the late Luther Mills and Irene Lowe Mills.

She was the loving wife of Lory Mathias, until he passed away in 1974. She is survived by her brother, Elwood Mills and his wife Thelma. She had seven nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her three sisters, Viola Laffolet, Josephine Bridges and Lurene Fling.

She was a member of the Travilah Baptist Church.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at Travilah Baptist Church, 12811 Glen Road, North Potomac, MD 20878. A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m.

Interment will be in Forest Oak cemetery, Gaithersburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Travilah Baptist Church.

Mrs. Evelyn Alger

Mrs. Evelyn Jane Alger, 87, of Keedysville, passed away Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, at Fahrney-Keedy Home, Boonsboro.

She was born Nov. 25, 1921, in Inwood, W.Va. and was the daughter of the late John Hesbia Foster and Beatrice Snapp Foster.

She was retired from the A&P; Store in Glen Burnie.

She was of the Methodist faith.

She is survived by two daughters, Janice Clipp of Keedysville, and Linda Hynen of Keedysville; three sons, Sullivan "Brother" Alger Jr. of Augusta, W.Va., John M. Alger and Clarke E. Alger, both of Frederick; one sister, Meta Foster of Martinsburg, W.Va.; 22 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sullivan Alger Sr.; two daughters, Sylvia Jane Alger and Anna Lee Coffman; one grandson, Sullivan Alger III; and two brothers, Clyde W. Foster and Hesbia C. Foster; one sister, Iva Lee Johnson; and one great-grandson, Aiden M. New.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at the Eackles-Spencer and Norton Funeral Home, US 340 at Halltown Road, Charles Town/Harpers Ferry, W.Va. with the Rev. Sharon Peters officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Lutheran cemetery in Bolivar, W.Va.

Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fahrney-Keedy Home and Village, 8507 Mapleville Road, Boonsboro, MD 21713.

Mr. Ricky Engle

Mr. Ricky Lee Engle I, 49, of Frederick, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at the Kline Hospice House. He was the husband of Dawn Reedy Engle.

Born Dec. 21, 1958, in Olney, he was the son of the late John Irvin Sr. and Etta Mae Coleman Engle.

Ricky loved working on cars, camping and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Ricky Lee Engle II and Elizabeth Dawn Engle, both of Frederick; his grandson, Devon Marcus Engle; his siblings, John Engle Jr. of Charles Town, WVa., Mary Brooke of Harpers Ferry, WVa. and Dale Engle of Frederick. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Pastor Randall Miller will officate

Interment private.

Mr. Thomas Hennigan

Mr. Thomas F. Hennigan, 80, of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and of Frederick, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at Cape Canaveral Hospital.

Tom is survived by his loving wife, Kay Hennigan; stepson, Andy Armstrong; brother, Joseph Hennigan of Anaheim, Calif.; niece, Mary R. Hennigan; and nephews, Brian, John and Jerry Hennigan.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at Church of Our Saviour Catholic Church in Cocoa Beach, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tom's name to Catholic charities.

Mr. David Martin

Mr. David Lynn Martin, 69, of Emmitsburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Born August 19, 1939, in Buckhannon, W.Va., he was the son of the late Orza J. and Mabel (Sayre) Martin. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Barbara Welty Martin.

He obtained his bachelor's degree from West Virginia Wesleyan and his master's degree from West Virginia University. After retiring as a teacher from Frederick County Public Schools, he was employed as a hazardous materials instructor at the National Fire Academy. David was active in the community, a member of Thurmont United Methodist Church, Emmitsburg Lions Club, and Friends of Emmitsburg Library. He enjoyed reading, photography, attending Emmitsburg town meetings, auctions, and working on his Apple computer.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are daughters, Marianne Kreiner and husband, Andrew of Germantown, and Aimee Martin of Emmitsburg; one grandchild, Nicholas Kreiner; and two sisters, Lois Chichester of Vienna, W.Va., and Linda Martin of Lake Placid, Fla., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg, with his pastor the Rev. Gary Morgan officiating. Interment will follow in the Emmitsburg Presbyterian cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in David's name be made to either Friends of Emmitsburg Library (FOLEB) 300A S. Seton Ave., Emmitsburg, MD 21727 or to Emmitsburg Lions Club, P.O. Box 1182, Emmitsburg, MD 21727.

Pallbearers will be members of the Emmitsburg Lions Club.

Mr. Harold Jones

Mr. Harold H. "Bud" Jones, 92, of 9421 Birchwood Court W., Frederick, formerly of 515 Fairview Ave., Waynesboro, Pa., went to be with the Lord at 9:25 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, in Northhampton Manor, Frederick, following a brief illness.

He was born Nov. 3, 1916, in Chambersburg, Pa. He was the son of the late Samuel Raymond and Edna (Carbaugh) Jones.

He graduated from Quincy High School with the class of 1932. Following high school he studied business at Penn State, Mont Alto campus.

Mr. Jones served in the Army Air Corp during World War II, as a court reporter in the European Theater and was a member of the Man of War Air Group Squadron in England.

He and his wife, the late Bette Lucille (Verdier) Jones, were married July 5, 1945. They lived at the Fairview Avenue residence for over 50 years. Mrs. Jones died March 18, 2005.

Mr. Jones worked for a number of years as a manager of Hess Planning Mill, Waynesboro, Pa. In later years, he worked in sales for Hess manufacturing in Mont Alto, Pa. He retired in 1985.

He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Waynesboro, Pa. While living in Frederick, he attended Life and Liberty Church. He was a member of B.P.O.E. Lodge 731, Waynesboro, Pa., B.P.O.E. Lodge 684, Francis Scott Key American Legion Post 11, and John R. Webb VFW Post 3285, all of Fredrick.

He is survived by one daughter, Melissa Wills and husband, Steven, of Frederick; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by one sister, Vivian Jones.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Pa., with the Rev. Dr. A. Robert Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Mont Alto cemetery, Mont Alto, Pa., with military honors conducted by the Honor Guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, Chambersburg, Pa.

There will be no public viewing. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 100 S. Church St., Waynesboro, PA 17268.
