March 19, 2001

Robert E. "Big Boy" Gears, Sr., 73 years of age from Worton, Maryland died on Sunday, March 19, 2001 at Magnolia Hall Nursing Home in Chestertown, MD.

Born in Worton, MD, he was the son of the late Leonard and Lillian [Buckhannon] Gears. He has been a life long resident of Worton. During his working career he worked for the Andelot Farm, Inc. of Worton for a period of over 40 years. He was a supervisor for most of his career there. He retired in 1982. He then went to work for himself as a waterman where he fished the Chesapeake Bay for a period spanning from 1982 - 1997.

Mr. Gears was an active member of the Maryland Waterman's Association. Mr. Gears love his work on the bay so much that he made his work his hobby. This included, fishing, crabbing and hunting.

Mr. Gears in proceeded in death by his wife Virginia who died in 1997. Surviving Mr. Gears is his son, Robert E. Gears, Jr. and his wife Irene of Worton, MD, a daughter Shirley McPherson of Conway, S.C. a brother, Judson Gears of Middletown, DE and 2 grandchildren. Services and Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Roger Dale Greenwood of Easton died on Monday, March 19, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton. He was 48.

Born in Easton on September 29, 1952, he was the son of the late Walter Lee and Dorothy Long Greenwood. In 1969, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he received his high school diploma before serving in Italy, Switzerland, and Germany. Following his release from active duty in 1973, he made his home in Queen Anne while he remained on inactive duty until 1977.

Upon returning, he began working for C. Albert Matthews, Inc. in Easton until 1988 when he started his own company, Greenwood's Heating & Air Conditioning. He ran the company until he was forced to retire in October 2000 due to health reasons. In his spare time, he became an avid golfer.

In addition to his wife, the former Michelle Ann Towers, whom he married in 1975, he is survived by four brothers, W. Richard Greenwood of Salisbury, Edward L. Greenwood of Chester, Robert L. Greenwood of Cordova, and Milton S. Greenwood of Centreville; and two sisters, Brenda J. Jump of Felton, DE and Bonnie K. Boyle of Queen Anne. Two brothers, Daniel W. Greenwood and Elmer D. Greenwood, are deceased.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Thursday, March 22, 2001 at 11:00 AM. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 7-9:00 PM. Burial will be in Ridgely cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1306, Easton, MD 21601.

Margaret Ida Rose, 74 years of age of Rock Hall, MD died on Sunday, March 19, 2001 at the residence of her granddaughter where she has resided for the past 6 years.

Born in Manhattan, NY, she was the daughter of the late Frederick J. and Emma Ogden. She spent, with the exception of the past 6 years in the Manhattan & Bronx areas of New York. She had been employed for many years for a production company where she worked as an assemblyperson. She retired in 1981.

Mrs. Rose came to Rock Hall to be with her granddaughter, Stacy Barry who took care of her for the past 6 years during declining health. Her husband, Eugene who died in 1989, precedes Mrs. Rose in Death.

A daughter, Carol Rose of Idaho, a sister, Evelyn Kosinski of Pennyann, NY, 3 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild, survives her.

A viewing will be held from 7-9 PM on Tuesday evening with a funeral service at 8 PM at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam and Newnam Funeral Home in Rock Hall, MD. Interment will be in Rose Hill Memorial cemetery, Bronx, New York.

March 18, 2001

Rita E. George of Queenstown died at Heartland House in Grasonville on March 18, 2001. She was 85.

Born on September 16, 1915 in Enfield, Connecticut, she was the daughter of the late Phillip and Amanda Beauchamp Grandchamp. She graduated from Chicopee High School in Chicopee, MA and then attended Bay Path College in Springfield, MA. She married Gerard Kendall George and together they raised their family in Plainville and Bristol, CO. Mrs. George worked for the public school system in Plainville at the Wheeler School, as a secretary to the principal. She spent seven years in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico with her husband, and when they retired in 1977, they moved to Newport, NH.

Mr. George predeceased her on January 1, 1993. Mrs. George is survived by two sons, Carroll George of Queenstown, MD and Robert C. George of Bakersfield, CA; a brother, Herman Grandchamp of Wilbraham, MA; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

All services will be private.

Robert A. Murray of Stevensville died at his home on Sunday, March 18, 2001. He was 52.

Born on February 26, 1949 in Greensburg, PA, he was the son of the late Robert L. and Esther R. Pallone Murray. He attended Annapolis High School, and then entered the United States Air Force. Mr. Murray was the owner of Hurricane Canvas for 25 years, and recently operated as Canvas Solutions, working out of Stevensville, Maryland.

Mr. Murray is survived by three sons, Robert C. Murray of Chester, Patrick L. Murray of Severna Park, and Jessie Rosquist of Annapolis; four daughters, Natalie Duty of Chester, Rachel Rosquist of Grasonville, Lara M. Murray of La Plata, CA and De’Anna R. Murray of Stevensville; his fiancée, Sherrie A. Morton of Stevensville; and three grandchildren.

Prayers will be said at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Chester, on Friday, March 23 at 10:00 AM. Family and friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Graveside services will be held at the Maryland Veteran’s cemetery, Hurlock.

Howard Franklin Russum, 79 years of age, of Chestertown, MD died on Sunday, March 18th, 2001 at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital in Chestertown, MD.

Born in Crumpton, MD he was the son of the late, Layton W. & Mamie [Holden] Russum. He spent all of his formative years in the Crumpton area. He entered the service of his country in the United States Air Force where he served for a period of 30 years. He was a recipient of several metals including the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sgt. After his discharge from the military he went to work for Dupont Corp. in Wilmington, De in the security department. He worked there from 1961 - 1976.

He has been an active member of his community belonging to the Millington V.F.W, the Centreville American Legion, and the Chestertown Moose and was also a Mason. In his spare time he had been an avid fisherman, crabber and hunter.

He is survived by a son Dean F. Russum of Disputanta, VA, a daughter Valerie Adams of Victoria, Australia, 5 brothers Ralph B. Russum, Wesley L. Russum both of Chestertown, MD Calvin Russum of Crumpton, MD, Charles E. Russum of Queenstown, MD, William A. Russum of Salisbury, MD, 2 sisters, Mary Dunning of Kenton, DE, Helen Barbosa of Chestertown, MD, 1 grandchild and 1 great grandchild.

Services will be held on Thursday, March 22, 2001 @ 11 a.m. from the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, MD. Interment will be in Crumpton cemetery. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, March 21 from 7 - 9 p.m.

March 17, 2001

James Edward Baxter of Millington, Md. died Saturday March 17th. 2001 in the Kent & Queen Anne’s Hospital, Chestertown, Md. of heart failure. He was 85.

Mr. Baxter was born in Kent County MD. the son of the late Edward And Mary Effie Kemp Baxter. Mr. Baxter retired from the Chrysler Corp. in Newark, De. In 1981 after 30yrs. Service.

Early in life Mr. Baxter was raised on the family farm and he continued to farm on his own for several years. He left the farm to work for Julian Leager in Millington, Md. and then went to work for the Chrysler Corp. building Tanks for the Armed Forces, he then went to their automobile plant where he remained until his retirement. Mr. Baxter loved the Baltimore Orioles and the Ravens and was an avid Nascar fan. For many years he enjoyed gardening and enjoyed traveling the roads of Kent & Queen Anne’s counties keeping an eye on all the local farms.

Mr. Baxter is preceded in death by his wife Maude Baxter in 1979, 2- daughters, Betty Carty and Ann Wallace. He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Pam O’Neal Lee and a brother Bobby Baxter. He is survived by 1- daughter, Helen O’Neal of Clayton, DE. And 1- Son James Edward Baxter Jr. of Millington, Md. 8- Grandchildren and 7- Great Grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday March 20th. At 2pm from the Fellows Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, Md. where friends and family may call 1hr. prior. Interment will be in the Sudlersville cemetery, Sudlersville, MD.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Kent Hospice foundation 103 Dixon Dr. Chestertown, Md. 21620

William Henry Wilson, a longtime resident of Fredericktown and Sunbury, OH, died on Saturday, March 17, 2001 at the William Hill Manor in Easton. He was 88.

Born in Cowdenbeath, Scotland on March 18, 1912, he was the son of the late William and Jane Turner Wilson. He emigrated from Scotland to Montreal, Canada where he graduated from Montreal High School in 1927. During WW II, he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

On December 24, 1942, he married the former Donna Marie Earnest of Mansfield, OH and they eventually made their home in the U.S. in 1945 in Fredericktown and then Sunbury, Ohio where he was a member of the Presbyterian Church. In 1950, Mr. Wilson became a U.S. citizen.

He worked for the State of Ohio as an accountant/claims inspector for the Bureau of Workmen's Compensation. He retired in 1977 after 17 years service. He was married 54 years before his wife died in 1996.

Mr. Wilson is survived by two sons, William L. Wilson of St. Michaels, MD and Edward B. Wilson of Begnins, Switzerland; a sister, Margaret Ellis of Welland, Ontario, Canada; and three grandchildren, Kristine L. Larrick, Joseph J. Wilson, and Edward L. Wilson. A son, Richard K. Wilson, is deceased.

Services and burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to a local chapter of the National Kidney Foundation.
