Calvin Herbert Dean
Calvin Herbert Dean, 78 of Mechanicsville, Maryland died, Sunday, January 7, 2001 at his residence. Born in Laurel Grove, Maryland on March 27, 1922 son of the late Luther Franklin Dean, Sr. and Lillian Grace Jones Dean.
He was the husband of Dorothy Virginia Weddle Dean, he is survived by one daughter Judy Dean Wood of Hollywood, Maryland a son Raynor Calvin Dean of Dunkirk, Maryland a brother Luther Franklin Dean, Jr, of Hollywood, Maryland, two grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren also survive him.
Mr. Dean served in the United States Army from February 1943 to November 1945 during this time he received the ATO Medal, EAMETO Medal, Good Conduct and World War II Victory Medal, he went to work for the Public Works Department as a Maintenance Scheduler at the Patuxent Naval Air Station. Mr. Dean was a life long resident of St. Mary’s County, he attended Mt. Zion United Methodist Church all his life, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite 32nd Degree and United Methodist Men, NARFE.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, January 11, 2001 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Rd., Charlotte Hall, MD with prayers recited at 7 p.m. followed by a Masonic Memorial Service conducted by the Thomas J. Shryrock Lodge # 223 A.F. & A.M. of Hollywood, MD A Funeral Service will be held Friday, January 12, 2001 at 1; 00 p.m. in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Laurel Grove with Reverend Phillip Ayers and Reverend Ralph Barrett officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers for Mr. Dean will be K. Wayne Dean, Larry Dean, Kevin Dean, Bradley Dean, Jerry Dean and Dale Dean. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1060, Mechanicsville, MD 20659 and/or Hospice of St. Mary’s, Inc., P.O. Box 625, Leonardtown, MD 20650

Robert Andrew Mowrer
Robert Andrew Mowrer, 37, Piney Point, Maryland, died on Wednesday, January 3, 2001 at his residence.
Born on March 28, 1963 in San Diego, California, he was the son of David Earl Mowrer, Sr. and Nancy Lorraine Groff Mowrer of Jacksonville, Florida. Mr. Mowrer moved to this area in 1967.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a daughter; Amanda Renee Mowrer of Nicoma Park, Oklahoma, two brothers; David E. Mowrer, Jr., of St. Inigoes, Maryland And James K. Mowrer of Lexington Park, Maryland, and paternal grandfather; Earl A. Mowrer of Mountville, Pennsylvania.
Family and friends were received on Monday, January 8, 2001 from 9; 00 to 11; 00 a.m. in the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, Maryland where a Funeral Service was conducted at 11; 00 a.m. with Reverend Joseph L. Hoopengardner officiating. Interment was private.

Janet Ruth Funk
Janet Ruth Funk, 79, of California, Maryland, died on Wednesday, January 3, 2001 at Bayside Nursing Center, Lexington Park, Maryland.
Born February 13, 1921 in Sugar Grove, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Claude and Linnie May Simmons Eckard. Ms. Funk moved from Florida and has lived in this area since 1990. She worked in Shenandoah Hospital in Woodstock, Virginia for eight years in Food Service and also was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary in Strasburg, Virginia. Her favorite flower was a yellow rose.
Ms. Funk is survived by a daughter; Shirley Ann Mason of Winchester, Virginia, a son; Donald Byers of California, Maryland, a sister; Dorothy Arrowood of Sebring, Florida, a brother; Raymond Eckard of LeBelle, Florida, eight grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren. She is predeceased by a daughter; Kay Francis Miller and a brother; Richard Eckard.
Family and friends will be received on Saturday, January 6, 2001 from 3 – 6 p.m. at The Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, Maryland 20650. There will also be visitation for family and friends on Sunday, January 7, 2001 from 1 – 2 p.m. at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, Virginia where a Funeral Service will be conducted at 2; 00 p.m. Interment will be following at Panorama Memorial Garden, Front Royal, Virginia.
Serving as Pallbearers will be G. Scott Mason, Michael Todd Mason, Sr., Christopher Lee Mason, Delbert D. Byers, Michael L. Byers, and Robert L. Byers.

Gail Irvine Wood
Gail Irvine Wood, 62, of California, MD died Saturday, December 30, 2000 at her home in Wildewood.
Born on September 17, 1938 in Neptune, NJ, she is the daughter of Ethelyn Virginia Irvine of Freehold, NJ and the late Kenneth C. Irvine. Ms. Wood attended Freehold High School and went on to Arizona State University at Tempe, AZ, where she earned a degree in education. During her 26 year teaching career, she educated 4th and 5th graders in Oakville, Greenview Knolls and Lexington Park Elementary School. She enjoyed traveling, stamping up and other crafts. She also enjoyed showing her Australian Cattle Dog, Torri, throughout the East Coast. Ms. Wood was a member of the Australian Cattle Dog Club of America and Therapy Dogs International. She was also a member of the Reformed Church of Freehold, Freehold, NJ.
She is survived by her mother, Virginia Irvine of Freehold, NJ, one son, Randall Jay Wood, of California, MD, one sister, Karen I. Campbell, of Howell, NJ, a granddaughter, Jessica Lyn wood, of California, MD and two nephews, Ian and Keith Campbell, of Howell, NJ.. Friends may call on Thursday, January 4, 2001 from 5-8 p.m. at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 5, 2001 at 10; 00 a.m. at Patuxent Presbyterian Church, 23421 Kingston Creek Road, California, MD. Interment will follow at Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, MD.
Pallbearers for Ms. Wood will be Pat Donovan, Jerry Olmstead, Russell Campbell, Ian Campbell, Bayly Smith and Bill Miedzinski.

David Charles Usilton
David Charles Usilton, 83, of Leonardtown, Maryland, died on Tuesday, January 02, 2001 at his residence.
Born on August 31, 1917 in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Thomas B. Usilton, Sr. and Agnes G. West Usilton. Mr. Usilton was an Optician.
Mr. Usilton is survived by his wife; Kathleen Shannonhouse Usilton of Leonardtown, MD, four daughters; Patricia A. Bowes of Tall Timbers, Maryland, Susan E. Gateau of Mechanicsville, Maryland, Nancy R. VanDerWende of Leonardtown, Maryland, and Dana K. Vallandingham of California, Maryland, a son; D. Michael Usilton of Worton, Maryland, eighteen grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sisters, Rosalinda M. Usilton and Bernadine Anderson and two brothers; Thomas B. Usilton, Jr. and William Kenneth Usilton, Jr.
Family and friends will be received on Friday, January 5, 2001 from 5 – 8 p.m. in The Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, Maryland 20650 with prayers recited at 5; 30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 6, 2001 at 12; 00 p.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 22800 Washington Street, Leonardtown, Maryland. Interment will follow in St. Paul’s United Methodist cemetery, Leonardtown, Maryland.

Mary R. "Ma Ma Jean" Miller
Mary R. "Ma Ma Jean" Miller, 87, of Solomons, Maryland, died on Sunday, December 31, 2000 at Health Care Center in Ashbury Solomons.
Born on February 6, 1913. Ms. Miller is survived by a daughter; Betty Millison of Solomons, Maryland, a granddaughter; Linda O’Connell and a great grandson; Chuckie O’Connell, both of Port Republic, Maryland, three sisters; Maude Moore of Alexandria, Virginia, Grace McCormick of California, Maryland, and Catherine Lantz of Hancock, Maryland.
Family will be received on Thursday, January 4, 2001 from 8 – 9 a.m. and friends from 9 – 11 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 22375 Three Notch Rd., Lexington Park, Maryland where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11; 00 a.m. Reverend Thomas Gude will be the celebrant. Interment will be celebrated at the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, P.O. Box 6, Lexington Park, Maryland and/or charity of choice.

Richard "Dick" Rorabacher
Richard "Dick" Rorabacher, 68, of California, Maryland, died on Saturday, December 30, 2000 at his residence.
Born on August 29, 1932 in Wayne, Michigan, he was the son of the late Floyd and Leneva Josephine White Rorabacher. Mr. Rorabacher was an Auto Body Repair Technician for Aldridge Ford in Lexington Park, Maryland for thirty years and retired in 1999. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1954 until 1957.He was a member of the American Legion Post 255 in Ridge, Maryland. His hobbies included fishing, crabbing, painting. He also was a Nascar Fan, Sprint cars, building and racing cars.
Mr. Rorabacher is survived by his wife; Mary Virginia Kalb Rorabacher, a daughter; Mary K. Rorabacher of California, Maryland, a son; Richard L. Rorabacher of Valley Lee, Maryland, four grandchildren.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, January 4, 2001 from 5 – 8 p.m. at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, Maryland 20650 with American Legion prayers recited at 7; 00 p.m. with a Memorial Service following. Chaplin Joe Dobson will be officiating. Interment will be private.

Mary B. Povlic
Mary B. Povlic, 87, of California, MD, died on Saturday, December 30, 2000 in Fort Washington, Maryland.
Born June 29, 1913 in Export, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Andrej and Maria Milich Drnjevich.
She was the wife of the late Nicholas Povlic, whom she married on June 2, 1946 in Export, Pennsylvania he preceded her in death in 1995. She is survived by one daughter Leila Grimsley of Lexington Park, MD and her husband David Grimsley.
Mrs. Povlic is survived by one sister, Kathryn Parsons of Fort Washington, MD, two brothers, Louis Drnjevich and Andrew Drnjevich both of Export, PA one granddaughter Gina Fiorentino. She was preceded in death by Albert Drnjevich, Mildred Kunczewski and Diane Moffitt.
Mrs. Povlic was a cosmetologist. She was the manager of several salons in Pittsburgh, PA from 1933 to 1940 and became owner/manager of her own beauty shop in Export, PA from 1940 to 1946 she moved to St. Mary’s County from Quonset Point Naval Air Station, RI in 1955. From 1957 to 1962 she was the Manager of the Navy Exchange Beauty Shop, then owner/manager of Mary’s Beauty Nook in her home in California, MD from 1963 to 1980. Mrs. Povlic attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, was a volunteer for the Red Cross at the Patuxent River Naval Hospital for 30 years, and received the Clara Barton Volunteer Award. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve she was the treasurer for many years and then became an Honorary Member. Mrs. Povlic loved traveling and bowling.
A Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at 7; 00 p.m. in the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD. Interment will be in Grandview cemetery in Export, PA.

Robert Carroll Dyson, 78, Army Veteran, Businessman
Robert Carroll Dyson, 78, of Lexington Park, MD, died on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC.
Born on January 17, 1926 in Pearson, MD, he was the son of the late Oden Miles Dyson and Margaret Watts Dyson. Mr. Dyson served his country in the US Army. He was a self- employed automobile mechanic.
Carroll Dyson was the long-time operator of Dyson's Service Center in Great Mills and was a fixture in the local business community until he retired about ten years ago. His gas station and towing business served many customers, friends and family from the intersection of Rt. 5 and Great Mills Road with his tow truck staying busy around the clock, pulling cars and trucks out of ditches and removing the remains of bent and bruised hulks after highway crashes.
A jovial and good humored country gentleman, Carroll Dyson typified the hard working generation which is quietly slipping away into history.
He is survived by his wife, Sharen Lee Willis Dyson of Lexington Park, MD, 16 children, Carolyn Jane Geyer-Joyce of New Hamburg, NY, Robert Paul Dyson of Arvada, CO, Joanne Marie O’Neil of San Pedro, CA, Amy Jeanette Dyson of Key West, FL, Dorothy Andrea Dyson of California, MD, William Richard Blazer, Thomas Mitchell Blazer, Michelle Laurel Marble, Jennifer Lynn Sivak, George Martin Owens and Mark Edward Owens all of Lexington Park, MD, Robin Lynn Schultz of Allentown, PA, John Scott Blazer of Great Mills, MD, Julie Ann Blazer of Tampa, FL and Constance Fay Walden of Bradenton, Fl, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, one brother, William Dyson of Valley Lee, MD. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Louise Dyson-Shields, two sisters, Margaret Clarke, Edith Thompson, and five brothers, John Dyson, Martin Dyson, James Dyson, Edward Dyson and Brent Dyson.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 23, 2004 from 4; 00 p.m. until 8; 00 p.m. at Holy Face Catholic Church, Great Mills, MD. Prayers will be recited at 7; 00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 24, 2004 at 10; 00 a.m. at Holy Face Catholic Church. The Reverend Kevin O’Reilly will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Thompson, Chris Thompson, Danny O’Connor, Lee Dyson, Edward Dyson, Bruce Sivak, Donald Goddard and Shane Marble.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lexington Park Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 339, Lexington Park, MD 20653 or the St. Mary’s Friendly Fund, 21943 Point Lookout Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650.

Mildred Merle “Millie” Russell, 76
Mildred Merle “Millie” Russell, 76, of California, MD died on Thursday, May 20, 2004 at the St. Mary’s Hospital, Leonardtown, MD.
Born on September 3, 1927 in Ceredo, WV, she was the daughter of the late David and Coller Pelfrey McCoy.
Millie moved to St. Mary’s County in 1946 from Ceredo, WV. She worked as a District Manager for 35 years at the JF Theater and the Lowe Theater in Lexington Park, MD, the Park Rexall Drugs in Lexington Park, MD and she was also a Hostess for the Mattingley Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD for the past 6 years. She spent her free time reading the bible, nurturing her green thumb in gardening, making pillows by hand and doing ceramics. She enjoyed celebrating the holidays with family and passed on many traditions to her children.
She is survived by her children, Rosalind “Becky” Burgess of Randolph, VT, Alice L. Rubic of Wilkes Barre, PA, Patricia Meier of Prince Frederick, MD, Donald L. Russell and David R. Russell, Sr. both of California, MD, 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a son, James B. Russell, Jr., one sister and three brothers.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 23, 2004 from 3; 00 until 6; 30 pm at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD. Prayers will be recited at 6; 00 pm. A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 24, 2004 at 10; 00 am in the Brinsfield Funeral Home Chapel. The Reverend F. Paul Liersemann will officiate. Interment will follow in the Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, MD.

Grace Martha Taylor Dean, 95
Grace Martha Taylor Dean, 95, of Hollywood, MD, died on Thursday, May 20, 2004 at her residence in Hollywood.
Born on December 5, 1908 in California, MD, she was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Beth Sheba Jones Taylor and the wife of Sterling Wilson Dean, whom she married on July 12, 1931 at the Hollywood United Methodist Church and who preceded her in death in 1993.
Mrs. Dean was a member of the Hollywood United Methodist Church for over 70 years where she had served as Communion Steward and was a member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service. She was a life long resident of St. Mary’s County and was a homemaker who enjoyed volunteer work, serving 30 years with the Child Health Center clinic which was held at the Hollywood Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, and spending time with friends and family, and was famous for her Fried Chicken and Stuffed Ham. She loved her time with family and friends, especially with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by sons James S. Dean, Alan G. Dean and Rodney F. Dean. of Lexington Park, MD, Donald W. Dean of Fairfax Station, VA, and daughter Barbara D. Trible of Hollywood, MD, 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by one brother, Webster Jones Taylor of Westminster, MD.
She was preceded in death by 2 grandchildren, brothers Orem Jones Taylor, Thomas Chester Taylor, John Mervin Taylor, Dudley Winfield Taylor, Edgar Francis Taylor, Byron Walters Taylor, James Marshall Taylor and sisters Laura Eunice Wise, Myrtle Ruth Dare, Leona Madeline Relkin and Gertrude Elizabeth Mullinix.
The family will receive friends today, Friday, May 21, 2004 at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. in Leonardtown, MD from 5; 00 p.m. to 8; 00 p.m. Prayers will be held at 7; 00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 11; 00 a.m., Saturday, May 22, 2004 at the Hollywood United Methodist Church. The Reverend Sheldon Reese officiating. Interment will follow in the Joy Chapel cemetery in Hollywood.
Serving as pallbearers will be Rick Dean, Danny Dean, Nick Yeitrakis, Craig Cavalier, Randy Raley and Danny Adams. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Cheryl Fever, Debra Raley and J.B. Roth.
