Frank Higgins Sr.

SANFORD - Frank E. Higgins Sr., of Sanford died Feb. 21, 2004 at the Goodall Hospital in Sanford.

He was born in Kennebunkport, eldest son of Everett C. and Mary (McLaughlin) Higgins. During his life he was very active within the community and some of his special accomplishments include: president of Kennebunkport Senior High School, class of 1931, founded Arundel Cabinet Works in 1948 that designed, manufactured and installed commercial and domestic interior. The company became incorporated in 1951. He facilitated the planning and building of the Kennebunkport Consolidated School.

In 1952, he relocated Arundel Cabinet Works Inc. to Wells from Kennebunkport. While a resident of Wells, his desire to be involved within the community continued. He served on the Town Budget Commission and Wells Budget Board. He was chairman of the Wells Library Founding Committee, chairman of the New Wells Town Hall Building Committee, chairman of the town of Wells Medical Building Committee and chairman of the Maine State Grange Growth and Executive Committee. He was the first president and founder of the Wells Chamber of Commerce in 1959 and the first president of the Lions Club of Wells.

He was also past master of Master Arundel Grange of Kennebunkport, past Master York Pomona Grange, past youth director Maine State Grange and past chairman and secretary of Maine State Grange Executive Committee. He held the chairman position of the Fourth of July Parade Committee.

He moved to Sanford in 1967. He soon became active as chairman of Sanford Airport Advisory Committee. He served as a member of the Sanford Town Club, chairman of the York County Democratic Committee as well as the Town Budget Committee. He founded Pinebrook Pony Racing Track and served as director of the U.S. Pony Trotting Association. He was owner of Pinebrook Rabbit Processing. He was a former president of the Sanford Rotary Club, chairman of the Transportation Committee and member of the Town - Waste - Recycling Committee.

In 1990, he moved north to Bingham. Once again, he volunteered and served as chairman of the committee for updating and expanding the sewer system of the town of Bingham. He was past president of the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce and the upper Kennebec Valley Trails. He was past vice president of Kennebec Valley Tourism Council, member and past president of Baker Mountain Ski Club, Bingham Lions Club, and Bingham Budget Committee. As an outdoor enthusiast, he was a member of the Federal Scenic Highway Committee Route 201.

He lived a rich and full life. He touched many with his dedicated service and welcomed the opportunity to serve within the communities he called home.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Sally (Sherman) Higgins; children George M. and his wife Anita, Frank Jr. and his wife Pamela, Constance J.H. and her husband John Glenn, Karen Cote and companion Wayne Brickett, Charles Hussey and Michael Higgins; grandchildren John III, Geofry, Matthew, Joshua and Kate Glenn, Kimberly Guerrette, Melissa and Nicholas Higgins, Cyndi and Jeffrey Taylor, Stephanie Riley, Shannon Cote and Danielle Hussey; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews; and two sisters, Mary Bowler and Louise Lowell.

He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers, Ralph, Clifford and Kenneth and his sister, Blanche, Ruth, and Doris; and his first wife, Patricia (Duggan) Higgins.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale. Burial will be later at Arundel cemetery in Kennebunkport.

Elwood Whittemore, 88

ELIOT - Elwood A. "Gus" Whittemore, 88, of River Road in Eliot, died on Feb. 17, 2004 at Varney Crossing in North Berwick after a period of failing health.

Born in Woodsville, N.H. on May 10, 1915, he was a son of Elwood Agustus and Anne (Ducharm) Whittemore. He was a graduate of Eliot High School and furthered his education at Lowell Tech in Lowell, Mass.

He met and in 1936 married his wife of nearly 65 years, the late Margaret (Laycock) Whittemore. They made their home for a number of years in Massachusetts, residing in Lawrence, Newton and Maynard, near his employment, and in 1951 they returned to Eliot where they raised their family.

He was employed as a textile chemist for many years, as a color specialist. He also consulted in the industry for many years following his retirement.

He and his wife were a very active couple enjoying dancing every Saturday night at the Rockingham Ball Room or Spring Hill. He enjoyed a number of sports, golf, swimming, tennis, biking and bowling.

An avid gardener he enjoyed tending to his large vegetable and flower gardens especially his rhododendrons, as well as the many types of fruit he grew, including raspberries, and blueberries.

He will be missed by those who knew and loved him including two daughters, Ann Tamburri of Kittery, and Patricia and her husband William Shapleigh of Eliot; one brother Paul and his wife Hannah Whittemore of Tucson, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Patricia Hodkinson, Theresa Allen, Marybeth Pallante, Ann Shisler and William Shapleigh Jr.; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were private.

Donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Alberta Wentworth, 97

WELLS - Alberta M. Wentworth, 97, a resident of Wells Highlands, Wells died the evening of Feb. 21, 2004 at her granddaughter's home in Wells after a brief illness.

She was born in Ashland, N.H. on Sept. 28, 1906, a daughter of Harry Mudgett and Anna Marie (Shaw) Porter. She graduated from Arlington High School in Arlington, Mass. and attended Harvard College in Cambridge, Mass. During the summer time, she worked at the Recreational Program, also coaching basketball at the Middle School in Arlington for several years. Later she ran the Citywide Physical

Education Program in Malden and Somerville area for several years. She also went to Sargent College to get her degree in physical education.

In the early 1940s she moved to Wells and ran the Grocery Store on Route 1 (where the police station is now located) for several years. She started the nursery school along with the Wentworth Cabins that she owned and operated for seven years. She worked for the Portland Press Herald as reporter and photographer for many years.

In 1959, she was elected to become the town clerk of Wells where she served from 1959 to 1978. She also served as selectman for the town of Wells for several terms, and served in the State Legislature for the town of Wells for several years. She served both offices concurrently for several years, and quoted that "After a long day in Augusta, she will climb into her light blue Olds Omega to make the 98-mile trip to Wells to attend selectman's meetings - and manage to smile through the entire affair." In her own words saying "I try to do the best for everybody." She also served on the Library Board of Trustees of Wells. She volunteered for the Chamber of Commerce of Wells for several years.

She was a member of the Zonta, Organization of Women's Legislature, and Order of the Eastern Star of Wells where she was the past matron for several years and a long-time member of the Congregational Church of Wells.

She enjoyed and loved politics.

She was predeceased by her husband Paul J. Wentworth, her brother Charles Newton Porter and her grandson Daniel Wentworth.

She is survived by one son John Paul Wentworth of York; one daughter Nancy F. Beauregard of Berwick; one granddaughter Melissa W. Tracy whom she lived with of Wells; and three great-grandchildren, Alberta Marie Tracy, William Tracy and Catheryn Tracy, all of Wells.

Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Friday at the Congregational Church of Wells, Post Road, Wells with the Rev. Herbert Henry officiating.

Interment will be in Ocean View cemetery in the spring.

Pricie Webb, 75

KITTERY - Pricie Nathaniel Webb, 75, of Martin Road in Kittery died on Feb. 17, 2004 at York Hospital following a period of failing health.

Born in Greensboro, Ala. on Dec. 5, 1928, he was a son of Francis and Isadore Webb. He graduated from Parker High School in Birmingham, Ala. in 1946 and went on to further his education at the University of Michigan.

He served his country as a member of the United States Air Force retiring as a Sr. Master Sgt. after 27-1/2 years. During his career he held various fire chief positions in Germany, Japan, and Johnston Island. His last tour in the military was as fire chief at Pease Air Force Base, where upon his retirement he served as deputy chief for 18 months. He was appointed fire chief at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1978 enjoying nearly 17 years as chief. He completed numerous fire-fighting training courses including Fire Protection Engineering at Oklahoma A&M University. He had been an instructor at the Air Force Firefighting Technical School.

He was the recipient of six Incentive Awards from 1988-1995, the Shipyard Commander's Commendation, Secretary of the Navy award for 40 years of service to the United States Navy and the U.S Government, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal and Civilian Unit Citation.

He was a past member of the International Fire Chief's Association and the National Fire Protection Association. He volunteered at the Salvation Army in Portsmouth, N.H.

His first love however, was his family. He leaves behind his loving wife of nearly 44 years Leola (Thomas) Webb; three sons, Ronal A. Webb of Atlanta, Ga., Michael T. Webb of Kittery, and Maurice K. Webb of Atlanta, Ga.; and one brother Francis L. Webb of Colorado Springs, Colo.

A funeral service was held Monday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery, with the Rev. Dr. Hillson officiating.

William Phimister, 92

MOODY - William Phimister, 92, of Moody died Feb. 16, 2004 at York Hospital.

He was born Feb. 3, 1912 in White Plains, N.Y., a son of John and Elizabeth (Masson) Phimister.

He was a World War II Army veteran. He devoted his career to law enforcement having been a police officer, Westchester county under sheriff, and a prison warden. He retired from law enforcement in New York State 32 years ago. He then settled in Moody, 27 years ago where he and his family had vacationed for years.

He enjoyed golfing and gardening, both vegetable and especially flowers. He also belonged to the Solomon's Masonic Lodge in New York.

He is survived by his dear wife Ruth of 62 years; three daughters, Ruth Ann Phimister, Elizabeth Ellen Smith, and Evelyn Jean Phimister; and three grandchildren.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made in William's name to York Hospital, Attention: Friend Raising, 15 Hospital Dr., York, ME 03909.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Florence Allen, 71

BERWICK - Florence C. Allen, 71, a resident of Old Pine Hill Road, Berwick died March 4, 2004 at the Wentworth Douglas Hospital in Dover after a long illness.

She was born in Limerick on April 7, 1932, a daughter of Dennis and Emily (Richards) Aspinall and attended Limerick High School.

She was employed by the Limerick Mills for several years. She was a homemaker most of her life.

She enjoyed crafts, bingo and going camping with her husband at the Apple Valley Campground for many years. She also enjoyed spending time with family and her grandchildren along with her adopted grandchildren James, Jenny and Raymond.

She was predeceased by her parents, a brother Alfred Aspinall and a sister Janet Wadleigh.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years Robert M. Allen of Berwick; three daughters, Judy Donnelly of Highland, N.Y., Donna Coffin and her husband Wade and Nancy Leary and her husband Jim all of Berwick; two brothers, Sam Aspinall of South Portland, and Gerald Aspinall of Limington; one sister, Anne Thompson of North Branford, Conn.; six grandchildren, Jason Coffin, Ryan Coffin, Amanda Donnelly, Kate Moulton, Dylan Leary and Andy Leary; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held Tuesday at the Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, Berwick, with the Rev. Mark Rideout officiating.

Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick.

Henry Hanscom, 78

KENNEBUNK - Henry L. Hanscom Sr. passed away at his home March 5, 2004.

He was born April 8, 1925, the son of Bertram and Helen (Jewel) Hanscom. He grew up in Kennebunk, and became a master carpenter whose work has been featured in Architectural Digest. After being discharged from the Navy, where he served on the Iowa, he married Thelma Cousens, and they had two children, a son, Henry Jr., and a daughter, Pamela. Both children survive him. His wife Thelma died unexpectedly in 1971.

He remarried in 1977 to Elaine (Stewart) Nedeau, a widow, and he rebuilt the home they shared until his death. Together, they traveled the world and found that life could re-begin at 50.

He leaves nine grandchildren, and became the beloved grandfather of Ethan and Erik Nedeau.

There were graveside services Tuesday, officiated by Jim Stewart of Owasso. Okla. at the Evergreen Cemetery, where his ashes were placed at his first wife's gravesite.

Robert LeBarge, 67

SANFORD - Robert Frank LeBarge, 67, of Lebannon Street, Sanford, died March 3, 2004 after a long illness at the Greenwood Center in Sanford.

He was born on July 26, 1936 in Alfred, a son of Frank and Myrna (Weeks) LeBarge. After graduating from high school he became a stone mason. He was especially proud of the stonework that he did at the Franciscan Monastery in Kennebunk Lower Village.

He enjoyed fishing in his youth. He never lost his fascination with the ocean and he enjoyed reading sea novels.

He is survived by his wife Marjorie; three daughters, Amber Lebarge, Bonnie Callahan, and Gayle Morrissette; two sons, Daniel Morissette and Raymond Morrissette; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Frances Taylor, 84

KENNEBUNK - Frances W. Taylor, 84, of Lower Village, died March 4, 2004 at home after a brief illness.

She was born in Kittery, Jan. 20, 1920, to William H. and Grace B. (Tufts) Wood. After graduating from Traip Academy in 1936, she attended Stoneleigh College in Rye, N.H. Later she studied business management at University of Maine, Portland, and in 1969 and 1970 commuted to Auburn for many courses to train as a property assessor.

In 1939 she married Robert J. Taylor in Kittery and shortly thereafter they moved to Goose Rocks Beach. After their divorce, she moved to Kennebunk where she has lived for more than 50 years.

During most of her adult life she was an accomplished seamstress, usually self-employed, and for a while also did alterations for clothing shops in Portland and Lewiston. When her children were nearly grown, she began working at Keuffel and Esser and continued there for about 20 years. In the 1960s she was the treasurer of the local plant's employee credit union.

As a hard-core liberal Democrat, she was very active in both local and state party campaigns even in her 80s. She usually volunteered behind the scenes, but at least once served as chairman of the Democratic Town Committee, and another time was a delegate to the state convention.

She also served on the Kennebunk Budget Board, on the school board, and volunteered in the assessor's office. She was an avid reader of politics and history and enjoyed knitting and sewing.

She is survived by one daughter, Karen of Longmont, Colo.; one son, Wayne of Waterloo, Iowa; one granddaughter, Joa Taylor of Minneapolis, Minn.; one sister, Christine Plumer of Exeter, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was cremated, and services will be held later this year.

Donations in her memory can be made to an animal shelter or a historical society.

Robert Morrison, 69

KENNEBUNK - Bob Morrison, 69, an 18-year resident of Kennebunk Beach died on Dec. 18, 2003. He died at home with family by his side after fighting a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was a Medford, Mass. firefighter for 31 years and had a lifetime dream to live on the ocean. His dream became a reality when together with his wife Rita they moved to Beach Avenue on Kennebunk Beach. After retirement, he worked at the Arundel Golf Course where he was fortunate to spend time with President and Mrs. Bush and other golf celebrities. After working at the Arundel, he became manager of Narragansett By the Sea. It was at the Narragansett where he made many special friends. At the time of his death, he and his wife lived at Cheshire Meadows in Kennebunk.

His favorite pastimes include his daily walks along the beach, golfing and spending time with his family and friends. He found spiritual comfort in attending daily Mass at the Monastery and will be remembered by his friendly smile, passion for life, and desire to help others.

Loving husband of 49 years to Rita Ann (Vinagro) Morrison; cherished father of Donna M. Donohoe and her husband Michael of Georgetown, Michael R. Morrison and his wife Kristen of Nashua, N.H., Gregory Morrison and his wife Maureen of Mendota Heights, Minn. and the late Bobby Morrison; proud Papa of Bailey and Cullen Donohoe, Lindsay and Taylor Morrison, Connor, Murphy, Morgan and Tate Morrison; devoted brother of John Morrison of Watertown, Marie Watson of Billerica, and Margaret Healy of Medford. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He will remain in our hearts forever never to be forgotten.
