Thomas Vail

KENNEBUNK - Thomas E. Vail died August 29, at his Kennebunk home in the company of his loving family following a brief illness. He was born in Burlington, Vt. on March 9, 1919 the son of H. Jackson Vail and Hallie (Brownell) Vail.

He graduated from Falmouth High School, the class of '38 where he met the woman with whom he would later share 61 years of devoted marriage, the former Elizabeth (Betty) Stuart. He was a standout athlete in high school and college, regarded as one of the best basketball players in the state. He attended Gorham Normal School for three years before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941. He was commissioned as an officer and became a bombardier on B-17s. He flew 50 missions out of North Africa, bombing targets in North Africa, Italy, Sicily and Sardinia. He returned to the states in 1943 as a decorated combat veteran, married his high school sweetheart and completed his final year at Gorham earning a BS degree in education. In later years, he went on to earn his master's degree in education from the same institution.

He moved with his family to Kennebunk in 1946 where he began a 30-year career as a teacher, coach, and school administrator in the Kennebunk and then Scarborough school systems. Many in the area still remember him as their coach of the high school girls' basketball or boys' baseball and basketball teams. He taught industrial arts in Kennebunk High School and he was also the driver ed teacher for many of the area's young drivers. He was the first principal of the Kennebunk Junior High School and later served as the principal of the Scarborough Junior High before retiring in 1975. For the next 10 years he worked at the Kennebunk Nursing Home where he made many friends and enriched the lives of the residents with his caring and thoughtful presence.

He served on the Kennebunk School Board and maintained a strong commitment to both education and athletics in the town's schools. He was a driving force in the town to build and enhance the Veteran's Memorial Field complex. This passion was driven by his respect for the young men of Kennebunk who had given their lives in the service of this country and his love for sports.

The term "citizen soldier" clearly applies to him. He was devoted to his country. He not only served with distinction during World War II but continued to serve as an officer in the Maine National Guard, retiring as captain with more than 20 years service in 1979. He proudly marched in the Memorial Day Parade in Kennebunk for many years.

He was an athlete throughout his life, he took a great deal of pride in maintaining his own physical fitness and being able to compete in athletics. He played tennis well into his 85th year, playing the game weekly with a group of close friends. He participated in the Maine Senior Games several times, winning gold medals in tennis.

He had a great appreciation and love for the outdoors and he passed on this interest to his children and grandchildren. Whether it was hunting, fishing, bird watching or just simply enjoying the outdoor experience, he loved to share his knowledge and encourage their curiosity and enjoyment.

He and his three brothers, Jack, Bob and Ted were remarkably close friends and very devoted to each other and their families. All four brothers were educators and successful coaches in Maine and northern New England. Perhaps most notable was the fact that all four brothers served in World War II, and survived to become part of what has become known as the "Greatest Generation." The Vail brothers traveled to Washington, D.C. this year for the dedication ceremony of the World War II Memorial, a remarkable trip by this Band of Brothers in which the family will always take pride.

He was a member of the Casco Lodge A.F.&A.M., Retired Officers Association of Maine, Webber-Lefebvre Post 74 American Legion, National Retired Teachers Association, The Sportsman's Alliance of Maine and the National Rifle Association. He was a 50-year member of the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church of Kennebunk.

Additionally, he is survived by his brothers, Jackson B. Vail of Cumberland Center, Robert B. Vail of Auburn, and H. Theodore Vail of Falmouth as well as his very special sister-in-law, Barbara Post of Portland.

The funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, 114 Main St., Kennebunk. Interment will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kennebunk High School Athletics, 89 Fletcher St., Kennebunk, ME 04043 for the purpose of maintenance and care of Veterans Memorial Field in his memory.
