Alex Stephen Voorhis
August 24, 2005
Arundel

WELL-KNOWN SEA CAPTAIN DIES WITH HIS BOOTS ON.

Captain Alex S. Voorhis, 84, passed away peacefully at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford on Aug. 24th, 2005.

The Captain took ill on Sunday after a day of boating, fishing, and lobstering with some buddies on his deep sea fishing vessel, the Suzey V.

He was born on March 3, 1921 in Eastford, CT, the son of farmer Philip Sherman Voorhis, from Pennsylvania Dutch and English descent, and Anna D. Voorhis, a Hungarian immigrant who lived to be 96.

Alex was in the U.S. Army, stationed in the jungles of Panama during World War II.

He spent years working in a threadmill where he quickly became foreman due to his no-nonsense attitude and natural inclination to lead. He also worked as foreman at Aerofab.

In the 1960s he got the bug for the ocean and began to take fishing parties out of Perkins Cove Ogunquit. He also was a truck-driver for years and when boating became a priority, he hired drivers to drive his big-rigs while he took out fishing parties by day and spent time with his family each night.

In 1976 he had married Susannah Carr, and became father to Meghann in 1978 and Alec Van in 1981.

In the early 1980s, the Captain moved his mooring to the Landing Restaurant in Kennebunkport, where he kept several different party boats including the "Capt. Al" and the "Miss K'port". He planned to retire in the mid 1990s, but then proceeded to buy a pleasure fishing boat "La Bamba", on which he continued to take out small fishing charters, mostly groups of old friends. He continued this tradition with the purchase of a comparable and more hearty vessel, named the "Suzey V".
In the late 80s and early 90s, Alex owned and operated Arro Yachts, Inc., with his wife. He served as supervisor and negotiator while Sue handled the finances.
He was initiated to the Masons, which he greatly enjoyed.

In 1995 the couple sold their boat-building business and bought a resort in Ogunquit. Alex and his wife divorced amicably in 1997, but he continued with an interest in the resort, and remained very close with his ex-wife.

Each fall, Al would deer-hunt, spending 1 or 2 weeks in Connecticut, where he had a lifetime license, and also 1 or 2 weeks up at Moosehead Lake. Despite some health concerns, he said he felt no different as when he was 50 and even hunted this past fall, the same as ever.

He wanted to die with his boots on and that’s what he did. After a day of boating he knew his time was up. He held on long enough for his son and daughter to reach him and spend a couple of days by his side. Coincidentally, as soon as his children heard news of his failing on Monday, they each came by boat to rush to his side, as they were each on islands off of New England, at the time.

He passed on Wed. at 5:30pm while Sue was en route to see him. He knew she wanted to be there and maybe that was enough. His last clearly audible words were, "Get it over with!"

Capt. Al is survived by his ex-wife and soulmate, Susannah Voorhis, of Ogunquit and York, son Alec of Northhaven and Ogunquit, and daughter Meghann of Ogunquit and York. Two granddaughters, Hope Anna Watts, 5, and Grace Whitney Voorhis, 2. Also nephew Gary Voorhis, niece Gwynnith (Voorhis) Irizarry, nephews Ronald and Roger Nagy, ex-wife Marion, and son Robert.

Alex was predeceased by both of his parents, his sister Florence (Voorhis) Nagy, brother George Voorhis, and nephew Richie Nagy.

He was well-loved and well-respected. He was a good man. And he said that he had done all he had wanted to do in life. He will be deeply missed, but wanted no funeral and no tears. There will be no public service but only his immediate family will lay him to rest at sea, by scattering his ashes. Fulfilling the wishes of the captain who died with his boots on.
