Laila Dehetre
1999-07-02

Laila Emilia Dehetre, 55, died Tuesday at her home in Gray.

Mrs. Dehetre had worked for Cole Farms for eight years, after working for Health-Tex.

She was a member of the Bible Believing Baptist Church, as well as the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Donald Andrew Dehetre, of Gray; two sons, Donald A. II and Michael M., both of Gray; one brother, Donald D. Aho, of Summerdale, Ala.; and four sisters, Nancy L. Curtis, of Owls Head, Arlene McFarland, of Oakland, Mary A. Brennan, of Yarmouth, and Linda A. Bulger, of Waterford, Conn.

Burial will be in Gray Village Cemetery, with the Rev. Darwin Vail officiating. Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home.

Marjory Delano-Sproul
1999-11-11

Marjory Delano-Sproul, 65, of Wiscasset, died Thursday, November 4 at Midcoast Hospital Brunswick after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Boothbay Harbor on January 19, 1934, she was the daughter of Arthur and Florence (Mathews) Delano.

She attended Wiscasset High School, the class of 1952.

Mrs. Sproul was very happy being a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, spending time with her family, particularly her grandchildren.

She was the oldest of 16 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her sons, Perry and Gerald Sproul of Wiscasset, Kevin Sproul of Winn, Kenneth Sproul of Wiscasset; daughters, Theresa Mullins, Cheryl Thayer, Donna Appleton and Pam Lear, all of Wiscasset; and 16 grandchildren.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the care of Kincer Funeral Home, 14 South Pleasant Street in Richmond.

Leo Edward Dennison, 67
2000-06-02

Leo Edward Dennison, 67, died May 29 at the Veterans Administration hospital in Togus.

Mr. Dennison was born in Portland, a son of Edward Emery and Lavanthia Cressy Emmons Dennison. He served in the Army during the Korean War, and received the Occupation and National Defense medals.

He was a merchant mariner and house painter, and had retired from the Portland Press Herald. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a communicant of St. Gregory's Church.

He is survived by his wife, Charlene Madore Dennison, of Gray; his mother, of Portland; three brothers, Edward, of Lisbon Falls, John, of Coventry, CT, and Richard, of Portland; three sisters, Elizabeth McDonough, of Westbrook, Roberta MacDonald, of Windham, and Gail Gray, of Bath.

Burial will be private, after a funeral Mass at St. Gregory's.

Ada DePass
2000-05-18

Ada DePass of Boothbay Harbor, died Thursday, May 11 at St. Andrews Gregory Wing after a brief illness.

Born in Cologne, Panama, she lived in St. Croix and Manhattan before making her home in Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. DePass was an avid gardener and a fabulous cook. She was a gifted musician playing organ and piano, and continued her musical studies throughout most of her life.

Mrs. DePass led a life of selfless service to her church, community and friends. She served as organist for Our Lady Queen of Peace Church and in the elected capacity of Secretary to the Parish Council for many years. She was predeceased by her husband.

Survivors include three cousins, Bernice White, Arvilla Evans and Nadine Watson, all of Manhattan, and many friends of all ages.

A prayer vigil was held on Saturday, May 13 and Sunday, May 14 at the Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, May 15 at the Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace, with Rev. Royal Parent officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay. Services by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Winifred G. Diggins
2000-01-20

Winifred G. (Auburn) Diggins, 100, died on Saturday, January 15 at the Gregory Wing Nursing Home at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Born on February 26, 1899 in the Borough of the Bronx in New York City, she was the eldest of five daughters of John and Florence (Curley) Auburn. As a young woman, Mrs. Diggins was a professional model and a dancer on the RKO Circuit. She later worked as a secretary with a Wall Street firm where she met her future husband, Raymond A. Diggins.

After their marriage on December 27, 1923, they lived for a short period in Miami, Florida. During the mid-twenties they settled in the Roslindale-West Roxbury section of Boston, Mass. Here she was active with church and civic functions. In the early 1960s they relocated to Framingham, Mass.

She is predeceased by her husband Raymond Diggins on December 26, 1964 after 41 years of marriage. She continued to be heavily involved in Framingham civic affairs and led many programs and activities at both the Raymond J. Callihan Senior Center and Framingham's Golden Age Club. She was often quoted as saying "There's nothing 'Golden' about it, I call it the Folden Age Club."

In the early 1970s Mrs. Diggins was selected to chair Framingham's Council on Aging and held that post for nearly a decade.

In 1985 she moved to Boothbay Harbor and in May of 1997 was awarded the Boston Post Cane as the oldest citizen of Boothbay Harbor. For the past eight years she was a resident of Gregory Wing. She was also the oldest communicant of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. Diggins was always known for her quick wit, if you asked her how old she was, she would answer with a twinkle in her eye -- "I'm as old as God."

Survivors include a daughter, Jane Diggins Harnedy of Machiasport; granddaughters, Susan J. Blackwell of Dunstable, Mass., and Sandra L. Carr of Westerville, Ohio; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

A wake was held on January 17 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. A funeral mass was celebrated for her on January 18 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Interment will be at St. Stephen's cemetery in Framingham, Mass.

H. Winfield Dodge

H. Winfield Dodge

H. Winfield "Winn" Dodge, 94, formerly of Bath and longtime former resident of East Boothbay, died Friday, November 24 at the Freeport Nursing Home, where he had been a resident the past six months.

Born in Boothbay, the son of Martin P. and Charlotte Morrison Poor Dodge, he graduated from East Boothbay High School.

He served in the Coast Guard during the latter part of the prohibition era.

In 1932 he enrolled in a correspondence course in Show Card Writing and Design from the Menhenitt Co. of Toronto, and worked on sign painting, boat lettering and gold leaf work.

On May 29, 1937, he married Melva Bullock of Augusta, living at Ocean Point for the first two summers. At the time of his marriage, he was a lobsterman working out of Linekin Bay.

Mr. Dodge was a deputy sheriff of Lincoln County for several years. He worked at local shipyards and was head foreman of painting for 25 years for Hodgdon Brothers and Goudy and Stevens when they merged to build ten mine sweepers for the Navy, and when they built the Sea Star, a 109-foot steel yacht, and the America, a 104-foot replica of the America winner of the America's Cup in 1851.

Mr. and Mrs. Dodge operated "The Little Anchor" lobster shop on Ocean Point Road.

A former harbor master for the town of Boothbay and a selectman for nine years, he served as chairman for two years.

He was a member of the Boothbay Region Historical Society, the Dodge Family Association of America, the Bath United Methodist Church, and the Bath Area Senior Citizens Club, where he enjoyed playing pocket billiards. He was a former member of the Knights of Pythias of Boothbay Harbor, the East Boothbay Methodist Church and was Past Master of the Bay View Lodge of Masons of Boothbay, and the Crescent Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star of East Boothbay.

After retiring in 1970, he and his wife wintered in Florida and Georgia before moving to Bath.

His wife died November 18, 1999.

Surviving are three daughters, Joyce Cantell of Bath, Sharon Riley of Lake Ridge, Va., and Gail Marzhuff of Hillsborough, N.C.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Bayview Lodge held a prayer service on Monday, November 27 at the David E. Desmond Funeral Home in Bath where a funeral service was held Tuesday, November 28. Rev. Russell Peppe officiated. Burial followewd in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Mabelle C. Dodge

Mabelle C. Dodge Mabelle Coffin (Connors) Dodge, 86, of East Boothbay, died Monday, May 22 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born October 6, 1913 at Machiasport, she was one of 15 children of Alonzo Anthony Connors and Mina Faustina (Gray) Connors. Mrs. Dodge's father was a lighthouse keeper serving on Petit Manan, Two Bush and Ram islands. When she was 12 years old, her father settled the family in Boothbay Harbor where she attended schools; still spending summers on Ram Island Light.

In 1931 she married Alfred S. Dodge Jr. of East Boothbay, and moved there to raise a family. They met in the summer of 1930 while Alfred (Duna) was working with his father to build the famous stone house of Rev. John Wilson on Fisherman's Island. In carrying the stone from Ocean Point to the island, the route was through the narrow strait between Ram and Fisherman's islands which allowed Duna and Mabelle to meet. Her husband died in 1972. Mrs. Dodge kept a home in East Boothbay for nearly 70 years where she was a loving wife and mother and active member of the community. Her main interests were the East Boothbay Methodist Church and its support organizations. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Arthur I. and Elizabeth Locke Dodge of Harpswell; sons, Alfred S. Dodge III and William S. Dodge of East Boothbay; and a grandson, Andrew Ian Dodge of Harpswell. She is also survived by the widow of her son, Albert, who predeceased her, Maryls Jacobson Dodge of Wakefield, Mass.; and her brothers, Russell Connors of Thomaston and Jack Connors of Taylor, Texas; and many nieces and nephews; and family members of East Boothbay Methodist Church.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, May 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 26 at the East Boothbay Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Arrangements are being made by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. In lieu of flowers, mourners may make a donation to the East Boothbay Methodist Church in her memory.

Kenneth S. Dodge
1999-01-07

Kenneth S. Dodge, 91, of Boothbay, died Wednesday, December 30 at his home in Boothbay.

Born July 24, 1907 in Boothbay, he was the son of Millard and Viola Wylie Dodge. He attended Boothbay schools and was a graduate of Lincoln Academy in 1925.

He owned and operated M.F. Dodge and Sons Lumber Mill in Boothbay.

Mr. Dodge was a member of the Boothbay Volunteer Fire Department, Past Patron and Life Member of Crescent Chapter #54, Order of Eastern Star in East Boothbay, and Past Master and Life Member of Bayview Lodge #196 in East Boothbay. His service in Masons began on December 6, 1928. He was treasurer for 30 years and was raised to the level of Master Mason. In December of 1998 an awards ceremony was held at his home in Boothbay in recognition of his 70 years of service. He received a clock mounted on a wood timber that had been retrieved from the last of the four masted schooners of the world: the Hesper and Luther Little of Wiscasset.

He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing in the earlier years with his brothers. He and his wife enjoyed traveling, which they did extensively, both here and abroad over the past 40 years. He was an avid reader and was able to enjoy that practice right up until the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Edith Dodge of Boothbay; a niece, Joan Dodge-Kerr of Sawyers Island; two grand nieces, Stephanie Bacon of Chestnut Hill, Mass. and Joanie Rioux of Boothbay; and a grand nephew, Stephen Sewall of Portland.

Visiting hours were held Sunday, January 3 with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Boothbay Region Land Trust. Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Kenneth Dodge

A memorial service for Kenneth Dodge, who died on December 30, 1998, will be held at the East Boothbay Methodist Church on Saturday, April 24 at 3 p.m.

Dorothea Dodge
1999-09-30

Dorothea Dodge, 89, a summer resident of Squirrel Island from 1954 to 1980, died Wednesday, September 22 in Andover, Minnesota.

She was born February 1, 1910 in Lisbon, Ohio. She graduated from the University of Southern California in 1932.

Mrs. Dodge's teaching career spanned thirty years in both public and private schools. She was a reading specialist in Maumee, Ohio and taught second grade at Lincoln School in Lakewood, Ohio. She also taught first grade at Gordon School in Providence, R.I. before returning to Lincoln School as a remedial and developmental reading teacher until her retirement in 1973.

Mrs. Dodge also taught in the American School of Paris, France from 1963-64.

She is survived by her husband, Guy Howard Dodge, and daughter Dorothea Lynn Neuman, who both reside in the greater Minneapolis, Minnesota area.

Funeral services were held at the Pioneer cemetery in Chanhassan, Minnesota on September 25. Arrangements were by the Methven-Taylor Funeral Home, St. Anoka, Minnesota.
