Lawrence A. Farmer
1998-06-18

Lawrence Albert Farmer, 85, died on Saturday, June 13 at the Gregory Wing nursing home in Boothbay Harbor after a long illness. He was a resident of the nursing home for the past nine years.

Born in East Boothbay in 1912, he was the son of Harry and Carrie Baker Farmer, and attended Boothbay Region schools and Gould Academy.

Mr. Farmer worked in the family trucking and taxi business, then at Goudy and Stevens shipyard. He bought a school bus and transported students from East Boothbay to Boothbay Harbor High School. He worked in several local shipyards as a sheet metal worker and as a cabinetmaker, at Bells Garage as an auto mechanic, and at Bath Iron Works. He owned Farm-er's Market in East Boothbay (now East Boothbay General Store).

In 1933, he and Gwendolyn Giles were married in Boothbay Harbor. They have been nearly inseparable for 65 years.

Mr. Farmer enlisted in the Navy in 1944. He trained in Gulfport, Mississippi, and served as an instructor at the Packard Marine engine plant in Detroit.

He was a member of the Masons, and the Order of the Eastern Star, and served as selectman for the Town of Boothbay. Carpentry, boating, hunting, camping and traveling were among his hobbies. He bought, renovated and sold several houses in East Boothbay.

Mr. Farmer was predeceased by four brothers, Roy, Raymond, Winthrop and Thurlow.

Survivors include his wife, Gwendolyn of Boothbay Harbor; a son, Winthrop; two granddaughters, Marcia Lewis and Heather Farmer; and a great-granddaughter, Gabrielle Lewis, all of Limerick. He had numerous nieces and nephews.

He and his wife raised the late Muriel Giles McKown, her niece. He was like a grandfather to Muriel's children, Penny and John.

A memorial service will be held at the East Boothbay Methodist Church on Sunday, July 5, at 2 p.m.

Marcie C. Farmer
1998-08-27

Marcie Clough Farmer, 46, of Hamilton, Ohio died peacefully Friday, August 14 after bravely battling cancer for the past three years.

Born in 1951 in Washington, D.C., she was the third daughter of Martha C.A. Clough of Exeter, N.H., and the late Karl E. Clough.

In 1969 Mrs. Farmer graduated from Lincoln Sudbury Regional High School in Sudbury, Mass. She was a graduate of Western College in Oxford, Ohio in 1973 with a degree in history and education.

Her professional career spanned twenty-four years as Assistant to the Dean of the Graduate School of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She held the position of secretary of the Graduate Council for several years and was considered the official historian for the Graduate School; she served on the Alumni Board of Western College and the Board of Kumler Chapel where a memorial service was held Monday, August 17. She received numerous awards for volunteer service to her community, including the prestigious Kentucky Colonel Award.

Having spent summers growing up in East Boothbay at her grandmother's home at Paradise Point, this region was her favorite vacation place with her family over the years. She worked for Jim Wilmot and Franklyn Lenthall at the Boothbay Playhouse for several years.

Survivors include her husband, Russ Farmer, and step-children, Jonathan, Jenny and Meredith. In addition, she leaves behind her mother, Martha Clough; three sisters, Rosalie Clough of Atlanta, Ga., Susan Clough of Boothbay Harbor, and Valerie Sandford of Denver, Colo.; one brother, Ted Clough of Amelia Island, Fla.

Contributions may be sent to the Western College Alumni Association, c/o Jacqueline Wallace, 325 Patterson Avenue, Oxford, Ohio 45056 and will be used for an endowment in her memory.

Carl W. Farnum
1999-07-29

Carl W. Farnum, 72, of Alna, died Thursday, July 22 at his residence.

Born in Wilton on March 10, 1927, he was the son of Carl W. and Hattie (Raimey) Farnum. He graduated from Wilton Academy and served in the United States Navy during World War II. On July 2, 1948 he married Morna Huff.

Mr. Farnum attended Farmington Teacher's College, now known as the University of Maine at Farmington. He taught in the public school system for 37 years, 37 of those years in the Wiscasset school system retiring in 1991. For several years, he coached baseball and basketball in Wiscasset. Before Wiscasset, he taught in Phillips, Wells, and Errol, New Hampshire.

Mr. Farnham was an avid sports fan who was especially fond of the Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Lions. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Morna H. Farnum of Alna; three daughters, Carla Clancy and her husband Thomas Jr. of Randolph, Kathy Goode and her husband Larry of Hudson, and Kelly Farnum and her fiancee Dale Rogers of Canaan; one son, Carl R. Farnum and his wife Joyce of Huber Heights, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his infant son, Curt Melvin, and one sister, Joyce Hale.

A funeral service was held on Monday, July 26 at the Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home with Rev. Floyd Carter officiating. Burial followed in Alna cemetery in Alna.

Leona Mae Farnum
1998-02-26

NORWAY - Mrs. Leona Mae Farnum, 60, died Sunday, February 22,1998 at the Norway Rehabilitation and Living Center. She was a resident of Locke Mills and formerly of Bryant Pond for many years,

She was born in South Woodstock on on April 3, 1937, the daughter of Gayden and Bernice (Rackliff) Davis. She attended South Woodstock Schools. She worked for the Penley Corporation and Ecco / Tibbets.

She was married in South Woodstock on Oct. 2, 1955 to the late Cecil E. Farnum who died Nov. 28, 1988.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Gene (Bernice `Bunny') Pratt of Oxford, Mrs. Arthur (Candy) Desorcey of Hadley Falls, MA; one brother, Thomas Davis of Yarmouth; two sisters, Edith Deegan of South Paris and Ethel Davis of South Woodstock and three grandchildren.

Please join the family of Leona Farnum in a remembrance of her life at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, at the home of her daughter, Bunny Pratt, 18 Pine Lane, Oxford. Call 539-4145 for directions

Funeral services will be held at the family's convenience. Interment will be in the spring in the Lakeside cemetery in Bryant Pond. Those who desire may contribute to the Make A Wish Foundation of Maine, 87 Elm St., Suite 206, Camden, ME, 04843 in her memory. Arrangements are under the direction of the Meader and Son Funeral Home, Norway.

Frances B. Farnum
1999-02-25

SOUTH PARIS - Frances B. Farnum, 92, died Friday, February 19, 1999 at the Market Square Health Care Center after suffering a stroke on February 6. She was formerly of Sudbury Square, Bethel.

Born in Waterford on December 29, 1906, she was the youngest daughter of the late Dana and Inez (Stuart) Berry.

She attended East Waterford school. In 1918 the family moved to Gorham, NH. She was a graduate of Gorham High School, followed by a year of postgraduate studies.

She married Homer S. Farnum of Bryant Pond on May 1, 1926. He predeceased her in 1983. To this union were born two daughters, Ramona L. Grover and Mary Stuart Hadley.

A member of the Bryant Pond Universalist Church, she was also a life member of Jefferson Chapter #89 Order of the Eastern Star where she held numerous offices, including that of treasurer for over 35 years. She was also a Past Worthy Matron, Past Grand Representative to the State of Kentucky, and Past International Grand Representative.

Mrs. Farnum enjoyed traveling and had traveled to England, Scotland, and Wales, as well as visiting most of the United States including California, Arizona, Washington state, Alaska, and Hawaii. Other trips led her to the maritime providences of Canada many times.

Surviving are two daughters, Ramona, and her husband, Richard, Grover of Mason Township and Mary Stuart Hadley of Norway; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two nieces. A sister, Norma Ross, predeceased her.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 22, at the Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock. Interment will be in the spring at the Lakeside Cemetery, Bryant Pond.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Jefferson Chapter #89 OES, c/o Eleanor Tracy, P.O. Box 444, So. Paris, ME 04281.

Mr. Roger W. Farnum
1999-08-26

CANTON - Roger W. Farnum, 95, a resident of Victorian Villa for the last several years, and a former resident of East Milton, died Wednesday evening, August 18, 1999.

Mr. Farnum was born in East Milton on November 22, 1903, the son of the late Enos and Mary (Childs) Farnum, and attended Milton schools.

Primarily a woodsman for many years, he enjoyed his association with the Rumford Point Animal Farm, where he was employed for several years.

Mr. Farnum married the former H. Ethel McKinney, who predeceased him in 1995.

Mr. Farnum called himself Farnum the Poet, and many of his writings were published in the Rumford Falls Times over the years. At one time he was very active in the Rumford Senior Citizens organization.

Mr. Farnum is survived by a son: Hartley Farnum, of Aurora, CO; several nieces and nephews, among them K. J. Farnum, of Bryant Pond; as well as several great nieces and nephews, including Wendall Farnum, of South Rumford, whom Mr. Farnum considered a grandson.

Funeral services were held at the Andrews Funeral Home, South. Woodstock, Friday, August 20 with Interment in the Greenleaf Cemetery, East Milton.

Jeanette Libby Farnum
1999-10-08

Jeanette Libby Farnum, 92, died Saturday at a Lewiston hospital. She was born in Gray, the daughter of Herbert C. and Frances Thayer Libby. She was educated in Gray and Auburn schools, graduating from Edward Little High School. She married H. Wilbur Farnum in 1931 and lived in New Gloucester all her married life.

Mrs. Farnum worked for Pine Tree Telephone Company for five years, and operated her own beauty parlor. She was a 50-year member and Past Matron of the Golden Sheaf Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, First Congregational Church of New Gloucester, Congregational Church Ladies Circle and a member of the Gray Senior Citizens.

Her husband died previously.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Elaine Joy, of New Gloucester; two grandsons, Gregory and Timothy Joy, both of New Gloucester; one granddaughter, Benita Deschaine, of Bangor; 6 great-grandchildren and 1 great, great-grandchild.

A funeral was held Tuesday at the First Congregational Church of New Gloucester. Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home, Gray. Memorial donations may be made to:New Gloucester Rescue, P.O. Box 82, New Gloucester, ME 04260.

Harriet A. Farrington
1999-03-04

NORWAY -Harriet A. Farrington, 87, of Norway, formerly of Bryant Pond, died Wednesday evening, February 24, at the Norway Rehabilitation and Living Center.

Mrs. Farrington was born in Woodstock, June 10, 1911, the daughter of the late Leslie E. and Edith (Cushman) Abbott, attended the Woodstock schools, and graduated from the Maine School of Commerce in 1931.

On July 2, 1932, she married Robert N. Farrington, who survives her. Mrs. Farrington was a seamstress, played the piano, and enjoyed oil painting, and flower gardening. Besides her husband of 66 years, she is survived by a daughter, Roberta Harlow, of Waterford; a son, Alan Farrington, of South Paris; a sister, Elsie Bennett, also of South Paris; three granddaughters, two grandsons, two great grandchildren, and two nephews.

Funeral services were held at the Andrews Funeral Home, S. Woodstock, on Saturday. Interment will be in the Wayside Cemetery, Bryant Pond, in the spring. Friends who wish may make memorial donations to Androscoggin Home Health, 15 Strawberry Ave., Lewiston, ME 04240.

Robert N. Farrington
1999-08-12

NORWAY - Robert N. Farrington, 88, of Town & Country Trailer Park, Norway, died at his home Thursday morning, August 5, 1999.

Mr. Farrington was born in Woodstock on August 25, 1910, the son of the late James P. and Tena (Lindley) Farrington, and had been as resident of that community until establishing his residence in Norway in 1981.

He graduated from Woodstock High School in 1931, and the following year married the former Harriet Abbott, on July 2, 1932.

Mr. Farrington was a veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater of Operations as a Platoon Sergeant with the 245th Combat Engineers.

A bookkeeper by profession, he was associated with the former Stowell Silk Spool Company in Bryant Pond in that capacity, retiring as office manager in 1970, after 38 years of service.

Mr. Farrington was a former member of Franklin Grange in Bryant Pond, served as a member of the Woodstock school committee, and was a charter member of the first organized Woodstock Fire Department. He was one of thelast surviving members of the Woodstock Athletic Club of the 1930s, playing baseball as a center fielder in the old Pine Tree League.

Mr. Farrington is survived by a daughter, Roberta Harlow, of Waterford; a son, Alan Farrington, of South Paris; three granddaughters; two grandsons; two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Farrington was pre-deceased by two sisters, Rena Lindley Farrington, and Edith May Farrington, and a brother, Arthur John Farrington.

Funeral services were held at the Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock, Sunday afternoon. Interment was in the Lakeside Cemetery, Bryant Pond.
