VERLE B. HUTCHISON
CORINNA & STETSON Verle B. Hutchison, 68, died unexpectedly June 11, 2001. She was born December 25, 1932 at Montville the daughter of Howard and Lettie (Burnham) Peavey. Verle served as town clerk for the Town of Stetson, and was a member of the Stetson Union Church, and the church ladies aide. She was employed for over 10 years as executive secretary to the Chancellor of the University of Maine System, retiring in 1987. She was also a member of the Corinna American Legion Auxiliary. Verle moved to Corinna 4 years ago, and attended the Pleasant Street Christian Church.

She is survived by her husband, Richard "Hutch" Hutchison of Corinna; 2 daughters, Luanna and husband Neil Hansberger of Ruckersville, VA, Joyce and Judson Stockton of Manchester, NH; 3 brothers, Keith and wife Mary Peavey, Alexis Peavey, Sheldon and wife Barbara Peavey, all of Kingston, Mass; and a sister, Alice Ferriera of Plympton, Mass.; 8 grandchildren.

Friends may call from 5-8 P.M. Thursday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna. Funeral services will be held 2 P.M. Friday at Pleasant Street Christian Church, Corinna, with the Rev. Edward Jaworski officiating. Burial will be in Clark's Hill Cemetery, Stetson. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Pleasant Street Christian Church, 29 St. Albans Road, Corinna, ME 04928.

ROLAND L. ATWATER
DEXTER - Roland L. Atwater, 87, died June 13, 2001 at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital. He was born in Sangerville, June 10, 1914, son of Joseph and Eva (Sanborn) Atwater. He graduated from N.H. Fay High School in Dexter. One of 14 children, he learned the building trade from his father. He constructed houses and also worked at the Abbott Woolen Mill in Dexter. He established Acadia Street in Dexter and built most of the houses there. He and his brother-in-law, Omar Roberts, established Cable TV in Dexter making it the 2nd community in Maine to have the service. He loved gardening and was well known in the local area for his large garden.

He is survived by two daughters, Peggy and her husband James Robinson of Dover-Foxcroft and Patti Robinson of Dover Foxcroft; a brother and his wife Maurice and Jean Atwater of Florida; a sister and her husband, Julia and Omar Roberts of Corinna; five grandchildren, Jennifer Cleaves of Sangerville, James Robinson Jr. of Parkman, Mark Robinson of Dover-Foxcroft, Cheryl Robinson of New York, and Kevin Robinson of Dexter; several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 1 PM Wednesday June 20, at the Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Dexter. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Dexter. 924-6890

LALA J. MCGOWEN
DEXTER - Lala J. McGowen, 101, went to be with her Lord June 14, 2001 at a Dexter health care facility. She was born April 27, 1900, in Bancroft, daughter of George and Angeline (DeLong) McCormack. She graduated from Houlton High School class of 1919. She was a member of First Free Baptist Church in Dexter. She was predeceased by her husband Frank McGowen and a great grandson, Jason Ogden.

She is survived by and will be sadly missed by two sons, James Thornton McGowen of Pittsfield and Clive McGowen and his wife Lorraine of Troy; twodaughters, Vivian Russell and Joyce and her husband James Wintle all of Dexter; 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; 14 great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

There will be no public calling hours. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday June 19that the First Free Baptist Church in Dexter with Rev. Harold Wheeler officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Grove cemetery in Hartland. Refreshments will be served at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First Free Baptist Church, 130 Spring Street, Dexter, ME 04930. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Dexter. 924-6890

CYNTHIA MORGAN (LAW) BURGESS
GUILFORD - Cynthia Morgan (Law) Burgess, 72, passed away June 15, 2001 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Dover-Foxcroft, July 13, 1928, daughter of Fred and Florence (Pierce) Law. She attended Dover schools and graduated in 1946. She was predeceased by her best friend and soul mate, Irwin C. Burgess, whom she married in 1950. She drove a school bus for over 40 years. Many children rode her bus from their very first day of school all the way through to graduation. Cynthia was also an avid outdoorsman and snowmobiler. Her retirement years were spent peacefully and contentedly on her beloved hilltop in Guilford Center, tending the lawns and gardens that she loved so much. One of her favorite pastimes was watching her bluebirds return each spring and raise their families.

Cynthia is survived by her three children; two sons, Joel Burgess and his fiancé Christine White of Dover-Foxcroft, and Jason Burgess of Guilford; a daughter, who was also her best friend, Rhobe Moulton and her husband Timothy of Wales, Maine; three sisters, Annette Farrar of Pittsfield, Priscilla Cleaves of Ossineke, Michigan, and JoAnn Cole of Bangor; a brother and his wife Stephen J. and Elaine Law of Dover-Foxcroft; a sister-in-law, Avis Edes and her husband Edwin of Guilford; a brother-in-law, Glen Burgess of Dover-Foxcroft; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Martha Hamilton. Cynthia will be greatly missed by many good friends, not the least of which are the special friends and classmates who gave freely of their time and moral support throughout her illness.

In honoring her wishes, there will be no public funeral services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North American Bluebird Society, P.O. WINONA E. BURNHAM
GUILFORD, Winona E. Burnham, 77, died June 18, 2001 at a Dover-Foxcroft nursing home following a short illness. She was born January 31, 1924 in Abbot, daughter of Harry and Louise (Looke) Crabtree.

She is survived by 4 sisters and a brother; a son, Robert and his wife, Pamela Burnham of Virginia and their son Brian; several nieces and nephews.

At her request there will be no public services. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Guilford.

MARY J. REED
PARKMAN AND DEXTER, Mary J. Reed, 93, died June 20, 2001 at a Dexter health care facility. She was born Oct. 18, 1907 in Parkman, daughter of William E. and Nellie (Huff) Greeley. She was a member of the Cambridge Baptist Church. For many years Mary worked at Hardwood Products Co. in Guilford.

She was predeceased by a son Samuel Reed Jr. She is survived by; 2 sons: William E. Reed of Dexter and Douglas Reed of Westbrook; a daughter and her husband, Betty and Wayne Thompson of Guilford; ten grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM Monday June 25 at the Cambridge Baptist Church where friends may call from 1 until the time of the service. Rev. Harold Wheeler will be officiating. Burial will be in Pingree Center cemetery in Parkman.

RALPH C. HILTON
HARTLAND, Ralph C. Hilton, 92, died June 21, 2001 at a Pittsfield health care facility. He was born January 2, 1909 at Portland the son of Alfred and Mabel (Philbrook) Hilton. He graduated from Hartland Academy, Class of 1923 and worked for many years at the Hartland Tannery. He was well known for his artistic abilities, his love of, knowledge, and drawings of boxing, his chair caning skills, and his knowledge of history, especially that of World War II. Ralph was predeceased by his family, including his wife Molly, who died February 10, 1997.

He will be sadly missed by his friend and guardian, Raymond Murray, his wife Ethel and family.

Friends may call from 2-3 P.M. Sunday, June 24th, at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport. Private committal services will be at St. Albans Village cemetery with the Rev. Ronald Parker officiating.

THOMAS "TATTS TOMMY" BREITWEG
NEWPORT Thomas J. Breitweg, 82, died June 22, 2001 at his Elm Street residence. He was born June 10, 1919 at Pequannock, New Jersey the son of John and Florence (Deitrich) Breitweg. He attended Irvington High School and served two years in theCivilian Conservation Corps (C.C.C.) in Nevada. During World War II, Tommy served in the U. S. Navy as a torpedo man aboard the U.S.S. Meade. In 1944, he married the former Gloria Mileti. He started tattooing in New Jersey in 1939, moving to Newport with his family in 1964. He owned and operated tattoo parlors in Newport, Bangor, Brewer, and Waterville, working until April 2001. He was the first tattoo artist in Maine for many years and held license # 01 until his retirement due to failing health. At the time of his retirement, "Tatts Tommy" was the oldest practicing tattoo artist inthe United States. While operating his tattoo business, he also owned and operatedNewport Chrome Plating Company for many years; as well as Tommy's Gun Shop. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, many national tattooing associations and organizations, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #11191 of Newport.

In addition to his wife of Newport, he is survived by a son, Thomas Breitweg, Jr., also of Newport; 1 grandson, Jason Breitweg of Hamburg, Germany; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 6-8 P.M. Sunday and 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Monday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services will be held 10 A.M. Tuesday, June 26th, at the funeral home with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Burial will be in the family lot, Riverside Cemetery, Newport. Donations may be made in his memory to the Nokomis Regional High Scholarship Fund, c/o Guidance Department, 266 Williams Road, Newport, ME 04953. Envelopes will also beavailable at the funeral home.

STANLEY H. BOYLAN
NEWPORT & ARLINGTON, TEXAS Stanley Henry Boylan, 79, died June 22, 2001 at a Fort Worth, Texas hospital surrounded by family and friends. He was born December 31, 1921 at Newport, Maine the son of Frank and Glennie (Langley) Boylan. He graduated from Newport High School, Class of 1939, and served in the U. S. Army during World War II. Stanley owned and operated a lawn care business for the past 17 years in Arlington, Texas until his retirement. Prior to moving to Texas, he worked as an auto machinist at Darling's in Bangor, Maine. Stan never met a stranger. Family and friends will miss him dearly.

He was predeceased by his father, Frank Boylan; his mother, Glennie Langley Boylan; sister, Lucille Gregoire; and four infant children. He is survived by his children, Penny Boylan, Jeffrey and wife Cathy Boylan, Carol and husband Carey Pippen; grandchildren, Toby Boylan, Christopher Boylan and wife Lisa,Shawn Boylan, Cara Boylan, Tiffany Boylan, Hillary Boylan and Colby Pippen; and a great grandchild, Hayley Boylan, all of Arlington, Texas; a brother Lauris Boylan of Newport, Maine; 6 sisters, Muriel Boylan of Bangor, Maine, Linda Boylan, Karlene Boylan, Arlene Mullis, Jean Beem, and Lorraine Stone, all of Newport, Maine; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Wednesday at North Davis Church of Christ in Arlington, Texas. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Boylan, Toby Boylan, Carey Pippen, Shawn Boylan, Ed Kersen and Tony Hernandez. Friends may call from 7- 8 P.M. Friday, June 29th, at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport. A graveside service will be held 11 A.M. Saturday at the family lot, Riverside Cemetery, Newport, with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

AMY L. TELESZ
ROCKWOOD - Amy L. Telesz, 74, loving wife of Bruno J. Telesz, died June 23, 2001, at C.A. Dean Hospital. She was born Feb. 3, 1927, in Newark, N.J., the daughter of Fred and Alma Grohgan. She was a bookkeeper for 18 years. She lived on 18th Avenue in Newark, N.J., then moved to Parsippany, N.J. and later to Asbury Park, N.J., before moving to Rockwood in 1999.

She is survived by her husband, Bruno; two sons and their spouses, Mark and Isabelle Telesz of Rockwood, Brian and Susan Telesz of Parsippany, N.J.; two grandsons, Eric and Jared Telesz of Parsippany, N.J.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by one brother, Col. Frederick Grohgan, U.S. Army.

A time of visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at McCrory Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, June 28, 2001, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rockwood, with Fr. Ed Morin officiating. Arrangements by McCrory Funeral Home, Greenville.

Elena 'Dot' (Carter) Bird
CORINNA - ELENA "Dot" Bird, 91, the wife of the late Alton E. Bird, died June 22, 2001, at a Pittsfield hospital after a short illness. She was born March 14, 1910, in Etna, the daughter of John and Lena (Sylvester) Carter. She attended Etna schools and graduated from Newport High School. After attending Farmington Normal School for two years, she completed her education at the University of Maine in Orono, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in education. She first taught school in Farmington Falls, then in Dixmont, Etna, Exeter and Corinna, teaching primary grades. She was a member of the Maine Teachers Association, the National Education Association, the Corinna United Methodist Church, the Cleora Rebekah Lodge, the Amicus Club and the Corinna Literary Club. Dot will be remembered for her keen mind and wonderful sense of humor.

She was a beloved mother and grandmother and is survived by her daughter, Donna Boody and her husband, Philip of Bangor; a son-in-law, Richard Parlee of Newport; six grandchildren, Scott Parlee and his wife, Pam, Laurie Hadlock and her husband, Parker, Darcy Parlee, Rick Boody and his wife, Terra, Ronda Boody, Robyn Missbrenner and her husband, Mike; four great-grandchildren, Krystal Parlee, Ilka and Finn Hadlock and Noah Missbrenner; a sister, Gwen Harvey of Moodus, Conn.; two brothers, John Merrill Carter and his wife, Joyce of Portland, Paul Carter and his wife, Elcena of Kenington, Md. Dot was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara J. Parlee and two brothers, Frank and Dudley Carter.

Graveside funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Morse's Corner cemetery in Corinna, with the Rev. Diane Danielson officiating. NEWPORT - Arlene N. Merrill, 80, died June 26, 2001 at a Pittsfield hospital. She was born March 29, 1921 at Sangerville the daughter of George and Elsie (Grant) Hill. She graduated from Foxcroft Academy, Class of 1939, and was employed for many years at Eastland Woolen Mill in Corinna, retiring in 1982. In her early years, Arlene was an avid gardener. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by 2 sons, Gayland Merrill of Vero Beach, Florida, Richard Merrill and friend Maureen Adams of Hartland; 2 daughters, Sharon and husband Albert Richardson of Franklin, Indiana, Pam and husband Gregg Buckland of Detroit; a sister, Ruth Bell of Corinna; 5 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and special friends, Grace Lander and Vera Shaw.

RUTH L. MARKWICK
PALMYRA & KINGMAN, AZ - Ruth L. Markwick, 78, died July 2, 2001 at Desert Highlands Nursing Facility in Kingman, Arizona. She was born May 13, 1923 at Billings, Missouri the daughter of George and Parmelia (Mitchell) Gold. She was the last survivor of 13 children, and was also predeceased by her husband, Marvin K. Markwick of Palmyra, on October 3, 1999.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Cahill of Palmyra; and 3 grandchildren, Brenda Glidden-Merryman of Laconia, NH, Marvin Glidden-Merryman of Lewiston, and Bridget Glidden of Clinton.

Graveside committal services will be held at the convenience of the family with the Rev. Ronald Parker officiating. Burial will be in the Palmyra Village Cemetery. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Newport.
