HALLOWELL

Theresa A. Davis – age 75 of Second St., died Wednesday, February 19, 2003 at MaineGeneral Medical Center – Augusta Campus. She was born in Augusta on June 20, 1927 a daughter of August and Jeannette (Coulombe) Valliere.

Mrs. Davis had been employed by Hallowell Shoe Company for many years.

She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a former member of the Sacred Heart Ladies Guild.

Mrs. Davis was pre-deceased by her husband, Harold S. Davis in 1992, two sisters, Ruth Valliere and Margaret Valliere and a grandson, Douglas Timms.

She is survived by two sons, Bobby Davis of Farmingdale and Mark Davis and his wife Celine of West Gardiner; four daughters, Linda Ellsworth of Waldoboro, Kathrine Campbellton and her husband Frank of Augusta, Susanne LaRue and her husband Conrad of West Gardiner and Jeannette Stackpole and her husband Ken of West Gardiner; six sisters, Rita Rodrick of Augusta, Beatrice Charrier of Hallowell, Doris Pridham of Augusta, Irene Whittier of Augusta, Pauline Dickson of Hallowell and Patricia Knox of Augusta; 7 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit today from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hallowell. Burial and committal prayers will be 11 AM on Wednesday in the Fr. Leonard Leclair Memorial Chapel at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Dr., Augusta.

Those who desire may make donations to Alzheimer’s Care Center, 154 Dresden Ave., Gardiner, ME 04353.

FARMINGDALE

Frederick K. Day, Jr. - age 74, of Easy Street, died Friday, February 21, 2003 at his home following a long illness. He was born in Skowhegan, Maine on June 18, 1928 the son of Frederick K. and Christine (Pooler) Day.

A graduate of Skowhegan High School in 1946, Fred attended the Maine Maritime Academy, graduating in 1949. He later served in the Navy for over three years.

He was the supervisor of Systems Operations when he retired in 1990, having worked for Central Maine Power Company for over 40 years.

Fred was a member of the Kora Temple Shrine in Lewiston for twenty-five years, playing the musette in The Oriental Band. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #2 in Augusta for more than twenty years.

An avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching all sports, but especially the Boston Red Sox. Fred also was an outstanding cribbage player, like his father before him.

He was predeceased by his father and mother.

Fred is survived by his loving wife, Lydia Day of Farmingdale; his son, Lawrence Day of Enid, OK; his grandson, Jordan Day of Enid, OK; his sister, Elizabeth Gooch, of Norridgewock, ME; two step-sons, Terrance Pierce, of Aurora, CO and Todd Pierce of Gorham, ME; a step-daughter, Merlene Williamson, of Coopers Mills, ME; three sisters-in-law, Mary McCabe of Clifton Park, NY, Beverly Weeks and Dorothy Weeks both of Winslow, ME; a brother-in-law, George Bowden, of Whitefield, ME; several step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit Monday, February 24th from 5-7 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta where a funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10 AM. Burial and committal will follow in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Bertrand Joseph Dube – age 80 of Greenleaf St., died Thursday, February 20, 2003 at his home peacefully while sleeping following a short battle with cancer.

He was born March 26, 1922 in St. Francis, Maine to Elude and Olive (Beaulieu) Dube. He lived a long, happy and interesting life. He learned the value of hard work at a young age. He worked in the Civil Conservation Camps for 2 years and then joined the Marines in 1941.

After 6 months of training at Paris Island and Camp Lejeune, he served with the 1st Division in World War II in action at Guadalcanal, Palau Island Group and Cape Gloucester, New Britain for 35 months. While at Camp Lejeune he met the love of his life, Doris Krebsbach, and after the war they were married. Together they settled in Augusta and had 6 children. To support his family he worked different jobs, baking, trucking for oil companies, along with other odd jobs while working at Statler Tissue where he worked for 40 years until retiring in 1987.

He loved to cook and bake. He would make cakes for family and friends for whatever the occasion might be. He was truly a master at his baking and decorating wedding cakes. He also loved to work in his gardens and share his produce. He would work from dawn to dusk as if there were no tomorrow. He could often be seen shoveling the neighbors out in the winter, mowing their lawns, painting their homes or cutting trees, whatever needed to be done he would do it. He loved to help people, it truly made him happy.

Bert will be very deeply missed by the many lives he has touched and especially by his family, his wife of 56 years, Doris, his sons Lee Dube of Truckee, CA and Rick Dube, his wife Dianna and their 3 children, Shawn, Nick and Alison of Fairfield, a daughter Joanne Bernard, her husband Austin and their 4 sons, Corey, Eric, Alan, and Aaron of Augusta; a brother, Romeo Dube and his wife Mary of Augusta; a sister, Jeannette Lord of Waterville; along with a great-grandchild, many dear in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins and all the people who had the pleasure to have met him.

He is predeceased by three sons, Donald, Kim and David Dube; his parents; two brothers, Larry and Joseph Dube and a sister, Bernadette “Bunny” Hamel.

Visiting hours are 2-4 & 7-9 PM Tuesday, February 25th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 12:00 noon at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, St. Andrew’s St., Augusta. Burial and committal prayers will follow in the Fr. Leonard Leclair Memorial Chapel at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Dr., Augusta.

Those who desire may make donations in Bert’s memory to the charity of your choice.

AUGUSTA

Ruth M. Gaghagen – age 75, of Glenridge Drive and formerly a resident of Portland, South Portland and Lewiston, died February 11, 2003 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Glenridge Drive after a brief illness. She was born in Lewiston, Maine on February 22, 1927 the daughter of James W. Murphy and Rachel (Wood) Murphy.

Ruth was a graduate of Lewiston High School and Bates College. She later served in the U.S. Army during peacetime.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a teacher in the Lewiston school system for many years.

Her husband, James W. Gaghagen, preceded her in death.

Surviving is a sister, Rachel M. Ferguson of Stamford, CT.; two nephews, Michael and Shawn Ferguson and a niece, Susan Broccoli, all of Connecticut; as well as several aunts and cousins.

Visiting hours are 4-6 PM Friday, Feb. 14th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 AM Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hallowell. Spring burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Lewiston.

WINTHROP

Kevin W. Karges – infant son of Richard R. “Rick” Karges and Megan L. (Rhode) Karges, died unexpectedly Monday, February 3, 2003 at Maine Medical Center, Portland. He was born in Augusta on January 29, 2003.

Besides his parents of Winthrop, he is survived by a half-brother, Matthew Karges of New York, NY; a half-sister Julie Konrad of South Euclid, Ohio; paternal grandparents, Alvin & Marjorie Karges of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; maternal grandparents Robert & Bernice Rhode of Shaker Heights, Ohio; and an uncle, Robert Rhode II of Shaker Heights, Ohio.

A private Memorial Service is planned for a later date.

AUGUSTA

Gerard C. “Tarzan” Lagueux – age 88 of Washington St., died Wednesday, February 26, 2003 at Maine Veterans Home, Augusta, following a long illness. He was born in St. Benoit, Canada on November 1, 1914 a son of Joseph and Clementine (Crete) Lagueux.

Mr. Lagueux was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II and taking part in 6 major campaigns.

He was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

Mr. Lagueux had been employed by E.E. Taylor Shoe Co. for 25 years and previously worked for Bates Mfg., Edwards Division and Gardiner Shoe Co.

Gerard was passionate about everything he laid his heart and hands on. During his lifetime, Gerard established a profound interest in carpentry, hunting, fishing and most of all, gardening. Anyone who knew him knew the pride he took in his raspberry plants.

Gerard is fondly remembered for his passion for music, which was clearly demonstrated by his singing and dancing. His infamous “My Little Gal,” a song he took away from one of many war songs, has touched the hearts of all who heard it.

Most noteworthy of all, perhaps, was Gerard’s deep affection for and devotion to his family. Gerard, better known as “Papa” to his daughters and sons-in-law, and “Pepere” to his grandchildren, was a family man by all definitions of the word.

Mr. Lagueux was pre-deceased by 12 sisters and 2 brothers.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lucienne (Patenaude) Lagueux of Augusta; two daughters, Doris Allen and her husband Fenrick of Chelsea and Jeanne LaMarche and her husband Robert of Augusta; 4 grandchildren, David and Daniel Allen and Thomas and Lisa LaMarche and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours are 2-4 & 6-8 PM Sunday, March 2nd at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, March 3rd at 11 AM at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Northern Ave., Augusta.

Burial will be in the spring in the family lot in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Augustine Church Restoration Fund, One Kendall Street, Augusta, ME 04330.

NORTH MONMOUTH

Joseph A. A. Lapierre – age 78 of Back St., and formerly of Augusta, died Wednesday, February 19, 2003 at his home following a long illness. He was born in Canada on March 24, 1924 a son of Aimie L. and Demerise (Faucher) Lapierre.

Mr. Lapierre served in the Navy, Air Force, Army, Army National Guard and the Coast Guard before working for General Motors and the State of Michigan.

He was a member of the North Monmouth American Legion Post, the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Lapierre was pre-deceased by three brothers, Donald, Henry and Aime Lapierre and a sister, Lorraine Dostie.

He is survived by two sons, Gilbert Lapierre and his wife Donna of North Monmouth and David Lapierre and his wife Melanie of Belgrade; three daughters, Diane Raby and her husband Michael of Port Charlotte, FL, Linda Veilleux and her husband William of Augusta and Paula Fortin and her husband Timothy of Augusta; a brother, Leo Lapierre of Gardiner; 15 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours or funeral service. Committal prayers and burial will be held at 11 AM on Monday, March 3rd in the Chapel at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Kathryn Leona Sheehy LaVerdiere – age 92, of Newland Avenue, died Feb. 26. 2003 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge Drive after a long illness.

She was born in Rumford, Maine on March 22, 1910 the daughter of Dr. Edward A. and Mabel (Hescock) LaVerdiere.

Mrs. LaVerdiere graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in Portland and Misericardia School of Nursing in New York City. She was a Registered Nurse and was very proud of her profession, having worked several years at Thayer Hospital in Waterville.

She married Anthony J. LaVerdiere on May 1st 1933. He died on Oct. 15, 1991. She enjoyed fishing, going to the coast with her husband, knitting and crocheting. Her other interests were her garden, flowers, mysteries (reading and T.V.), and all sports except basball. Kathryn also had several canaries named “Dickie”.

For many years she was involved with her husband in the operation of the LaVerdiere Drug Stores in Maine.

Mrs. LaVerdiere was a communicant of St. Andrews Catholic Church and a member of St. Andrews Women’s Club.

What was most important to her was her Religion and her Irish heritage. She was very protective of her family. She was always known as “Kay” and always wanted to be called “Meme” by her grandchildren, not Grammy.

Besides her husband, Kay was predeceased by a daughter, Joan K. Damren, on April 8, 1971, two sons, Edward A. LaVerdiere on Oct. 26, 1974 and Robert G. LaVerdiere on Nov. 19, 1988, two brothers, Rev. Edward A. Sheehy and Dr. Maurice J. Sheehy; and a sister, Margaret McCourt.

Survivors include four grandchildren: Dana M. Damren and his wife Janet of Augusta, Brenda Rowe and her significant other William Baker of Augusta, Sheila Damren of Columbus, Ohio, and Lorna Damren of Portland; eight great-grandchildren, a great-great grandson and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may visit 2-4 and 7-9 P.M Sunday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9 AM Monday at St. Andrews Catholic Church, St. Andrews Street, Augusta. Spring Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Manchester.

AUGUSTA

Flora M. “Jeanette” Michaud – age 90, of Lafayette Street, passed away on February 13, 2003 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center at Gray Birch Drive after a year long battle with ovarian cancer. She was born in Augusta, Maine on October 12, 1912. Her parents were Louis and Louise (Caret) Veilleux. She was brought up by her aunt, Marion Caret Genest Laliberte on 43 Court Street during her childhood.

Mrs. Michaud lived in Augusta, Waterville, Winslow and Lewiston during her lifetime. She worked at the Augusta cotton mill, Hathaway Shirt Factory in Waterville, waitressed for many restaurants in the area. During the last 11 years of employment, she worked at the former Augusta General Hospital as a housekeeper.

Mrs. Michaud was educated at the former Smith School; St. Augustine’s Parochial School; convent in Sherbrook, Canada for 8 yrs.; and finished at the old Lewiston High School.

Survivors include her daughter, Gayle L. Michaud and fiancé Don Merrifield of Augusta; two sons: Gabriel Poulin, Jr. of New Britain, CT and Kurt Savasuk and his wife Sharon, of Clinton, ME: four grandchildren, Lee Poulin of New Britain, CT, Rene Poulin of New York, David Savasuk; and Tanya LaCroix and husband; as well as two great-granddaughters.

Mrs. Michaud was predeceased by a daughter, Joan Poulin; son, Theodore Poulin (both at 4 years old of pneumonia); and a brother, Wilfred Veilleux (who died at 18 months of spinal meningitis). Also predeceased by her husbands: Gabriel Poulin, Sr. of Augusta and Connecticut; Joseph Savasuk of Winslow; and Alcide (Ray) Michaud of Augusta and originally from Fort Kent.

She was such an adventurous spirit. She sometimes drove for miles in the rain with the windshield wipers not operating, and even one time with no brakes to see the boxing matches throughout the State. She even entertained the neighbors at Togus Stream when she would take the canoe down the stream singing “Indian Love Call”. She was blessed with an “operatic voice” just like her mother Louise and grandmother Caret (Cliche).

Flora loved crossword puzzles, reading, knitting, tatting, interest in boxing matches in the 1930’s and 40’s; going to see the Red Sox during the 1940’s (and even got to meet baseball legends Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio); and riding with her daughter everywhere in the State. Most of all, she will be missed immensely by her daughter, Gayle, who sums it best “My mother was not just a mother. Through all the good times and the bad, she was my best friend - we were just like sisters.”

Visiting hours are 2-4 & 7-9 PM Sunday Feb. 16th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, Maine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 AM Monday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Spring burial will in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Road, Augusta.
