Carl F. Dean

SEARSMONT - Carl F. Dean, 69, of Searsmont, passed away Sept. 13, 2005, at home with his family at his side after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Dec. 5, 1935, in Camden, the son of James H. and Florence M. (St. Clair) Dean.

Carl was a member of the Class of 1955 at Camden High School. He served in the Navy during the Korean War and spent many years in the Merchant Marines. He was a member of the U.A. Local 321 and 716 Plumbers and Pipefitters.

Carl was also a proud member of the King David Masonic Lodge. His many joys in life included boating, camping, fishing, gardening, hunting with his favorite buddies, Woody and Terry, and spending time with friends and family reminiscing about the good ol' days of growing up in Maine as a boy. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Carl was predeceased by his parents; two sisters, Pricilla Alley and Shirley Ball; a brother, Norman "Buddy" Dean; and a grandson, Gabriel C. T. Wood.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sally (Crockett) Dean, of Searsmont; three daughters, Georgia Dean, of Searsmont, Peggy Wood, of Lincoln, and her husband, Richard "Woody," and Laurie Sanders and her husband, Doug of Goodyear, Arizona; two sons, Richard Brickett and his wife, Kim, of Alfred, and Michael Brickett, of Fridley, MN; eight grandchildren, Sabra Dean, Candra Leckman, Rachael Wood, Diana and Amy Brickett, Benjamin, Lauren and Samuel Brickett; one great grandchild, Kaleb Bouchard; several nieces and nephews; and his loving and faithful companions, his dog, Honey and cat, Miss Min.

A Masonic service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, at the Rockport Masonic Hall, Main Street, Rockport, followed by a gathering of family and friends. Donations may be sent to Waldo County Hospice, PO Box 407, Belfast, ME 04915.

Arrangements are under the care of Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast.

Maurice W. Smith

CAMDEN - Maurice W. Smith, 93, formerly of Rockland, died Sept. 18, 2005 at his granddaughter's home after a long illness.

He was born on Swans Island on June 13, 1912 and was the son of George and Nellie Lunt Smith. After moving to Rockland at an early age he was educated in local schools.

During the early years of his career, he apprenticed aboard coastal steam ships and ultimately earned a fireman and oil steam operator's license.

He married Harriett Scott in Rockland on Nov. 18, 1939.

For many years, he lobstered out of Spruce Head and Rockland and off Dix Island, which he owned. He continued fishing until he was 74.

He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and often visited Florida and Alaska. He regularly recounted stories of old times and often said that when he and his wife were first married, they rented a whole house in Thomaston for $5 a month and had a hard time paying that.

He was a member of the Rockland Lodge of Elks, No. 1008.

He was predeceased by his wife in 1998.

He is survived by one daughter, Judith Erskine and her husband Glendon of Camden; his brother Wendell Smith of Lincolnville; a granddaughter, Debbie Murgita and her husband Brian; a grandson, Scott Erskine and his wife Cathy; three great-grandchildren, Sierra Pettee, Calen Erskine and Noah Erskine; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be private with Interment at Ocean View cemetery in South Thomaston.

Arrangements are with the Burpee, Carpenter and Hutchins Funeral Home at 110 Limerock St. in Rockland.

Elaine E. Steeves

ROCKLAND - Elaine E. Steeves, 60, died Sept. 16, 2005 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center after a brief battle with cancer.

She was born in Rockland on Feb. 13, 1945 and was the daughter of Ernest S. Sr. and Eunice Thompson Gamage. Having lost her mother at an early age, Elaine assumed a role of mother figure for her siblings.

In 1980 she began training at Central Beauty School in Augusta, graduating in 1981.

She worked five years at Sisters Two in Rockland and since that time owned and operated Hair Dynamics. She formed lasting relationships with many of her clientele. She was a loyal person and friend.

On July 8, 1989 she married Leslie A. "Porker" Steeves in Rockland.

The well-being of her children and grandchildren was of utmost importance to her. Her family said she was hardworking, frugal and always lending a hand -- the true persona of a traditional Mainer. They also noted that her strength and concern for others was evident until the very end. Her husband fondly remembered that he often called her his "little peach blossom," meaning that she was hard on the outside, but soft in the middle. All those who knew Elaine will miss her greatly.

She faithfully attended and was very involved in her church, Calvary Tabernacle in Rockland.

Other than her husband "Porker," she is survived by her father Ernest S. Gamage Sr., both of Rockland; one son, Dale T. Adkins and his wife Michelle of Cushing; one daughter, Renee E. Adkins of Warren; two brothers, Norman E. Gamage Sr. and his wife Virginia of Owls Head, and Ernest S. Gamage Jr. and his companion Heidi Kliewer of Rockland; four sisters, Sharon L. Preston of Rockland, Ruth F. Scott and her companion Darrell Hemenway of Belmont, Gladys V. Hutchinson and her husband Gene of Vinalhaven, and Eunice J. Alfano and her husband William of Union; nine grandchildren, Nicholas, Tyler, Kayla, Brenna, Jacob, Brett, Lexi, Brooke and Sierra; many brothers- and sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, Sept. 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Burpee, Carpenter and Hutchins Funeral Home at 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Bartram Dilks will officiate. Interment will follow at Achorn cemetery on Old County Road in Rockland.

Herbert G. Vencel

LIBERTY - Herbert G. Vencel, 70, of Ridgefield, CT and Liberty, passed away after a brief illness Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005, at St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor. He was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, the son of the late Stephen and Grace (Lucas) Vencel.

Herb was raised in Wisconsin and joined the United States Air Force in 1953. He was a pilot with the Air Force for 11 years, which included four years of service in Japan. He was also with American Airlines for 29 years, retiring as a captain in 1995. Herb was an avid hunter, fisherman and a member of the American Airlines Grey Eagles. He was also an active lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

Herb is survived by his wife of 47 years, Nancy (Prescott) Vencel, born in Presque Isle; four children, Marilyn Vencel and husband, David Leard of Litchfield, CT, Katherine Edwards of Commack, NY, Cynthia Nofi and husband, Mark of Roswell, Ga., and Michael C. Vencel and wife, Heidi of Milford, CT; three siblings, Cecelia Lukasik, Stephen Vencel and Janet Stevenson; and six grandchildren, Michael Leard, Melanie Leard, Amy Leard, Michael Smith, Matthew Nofi and Thomas Nofi.

Friends are invited to call at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave, in Belfast, 6-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, Court Street, Belfast. Interment will follow at Hunt Memorial Cemetery, Liberty.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make memorial donations may do so to St. Joseph Hospital, 360 Broadway, Bangor, ME 04401.

Andrea Louise Sinclair

BELFAST - Andrea Louise Sinclair, 34, of Belfast, died peacefully at Maine Medical Center, in Portland, on Sept. 16, 2005. She was born in Belfast on Dec. 1, 1970, the daughter of Priscilla and Andrew Sinclair.

Andrea attended Crosby High School and Belfast Area High School. She graduated in 1990 from Lemon Bay High School, Englewood, Fla. Andrea attended Pine Tree Camp summers for 28 years. For the past three years she attended Belfast Industries.

Andrea was predeceased by her father. Andrea is survived by her mother, Priscilla Sinclair, of Belfast; two brothers, Timothy S. Hall, of Islesboro, and Joseph Hall, of Brewer; two sisters, Kimberly Coad, of Belfast, and Pamela Hall, of Gray; several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles; and her special pets, Moxie and Fred.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave, Belfast.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Group Home Foundation, Belfast Industries, PO Box 227, Belfast, ME 04915; or to the Pine Tree Society, 149 Front Street, Bath, ME 04530.

Hazel E. Hatch Nash

WALDOBORO - Hazel E. Hatch Nash, 94, of Waldoboro died Sept. 17, 2005 at Fieldcrest Manor in Waldoboro.

She was born in Woolwich on Aug. 1, 1911 and was the daughter of the late Arthur H. and Mary A. (Cuthbertson) Hatch. Hazel was one of five children: Herbert Hatch, Herman Hatch, George "Archie" Hatch and Alice Gross.

She attended Morse High School in Bath and was a graduate of Waldoboro High School.

She married Maynard Nash of Waldoboro on Feb. 28, 1931.

While raising her family, she braided rugs at home for a Portland company. She later worked at the Waldoboro Button Factory and the Medomak Canning Company, and retired from GTE Sylvania.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, cooking, reading and spending time with her family. For many years she knit mittens, caps and boot socks and donated them to local schools and the police department's annual drive. A strong, independent lady, she lived alone in the family home after her husband's death until she was 91.

In addition to her husband of 43 years, who died Dec. 2, 1974, she was predeceased by three brothers and a sister.

She is survived by three sons and their wives, Maynard and Carol Nash, Ronald and Donna Nash, and William and Phyllis Nash all of Waldoboro; 16 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

There will be a private graveside service at the family's convenience. Interment will be in the Brookside cemetery in Waldoboro.

Arrangements are with the Coast of Maine Cremation and Funeral Service in Waldoboro.

Ada M. McKinney

BREWER - Ada McKinney, 75, formally of Union and Lincolnville, died Sept. 13, 2005 at a Brewer healthcare facility. Born, Oct. 12, 1929 in Augusta, Me she was the daughter of Jesse and Marion (Carson) Harvey.

Ada loved to cook. She enjoyed helping her husband, Clarence with the animals on their farm. She was a member of the Lincolnville Grange and the Pentecostal Church of Belfast.

Ada was predeceased by her husband Clarence R. McKinney Sr. in 1988 and both her parents.

Survivors include her 2 sons; Edgar P. Clark Jr. and his wife Tina of Vassalboro, ME and Clarence R. McKinney Jr. of Florida, 3 brothers; Frank Harvey and his wife Erika of Belfast, Harold Harvey and his wife Lillian of Skowhegan, and Ernie Harvey and his wife Bea of Hartland, 3 grandchildren; Jeremy Robishaw, Jessie Clark, and Dylan Clark, 7 great-grandchildren; Myranda Robishaw, Shawn Kingsbury, Jayred Robishaw, Josiah Kingsbury, Michael Michaud, Alexiandria Robishaw, and Jassy Robishaw, many nieces and nephews including a special niece; Marion Buckley of Swanville.

Josephine Ann Calder

JEFFERSON - Josephine Ann Calder, 55, died Sept. 19, 2005 at her home in Jefferson after a brief illness.

She was born Sept. 24, 1949 in Portland and was the daughter of Peter and Jane Kilbride Price.

She will be remembered as a loving, caring and giving person.

She is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, Robert O. Calder of Jefferson; her son, Robert O. Calder II of South Portland; her daughter, Christa C. Calder of Auburn; her parents, Peter and Jane Price of Jefferson; and her brothers, Bernard Price of Amherst, Mass. and Peter Price II of Freeport.

At Josephine's request there will be no services.

Arrangements are with the Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Waldoboro.

Virginia A. Ausplund

ROCKLAND - Virginia A. Ausplund, 81, died quietly on Sept. 16, 2005 at the Knox Center for Long-Term Care.

She was born in Rockland on Dec. 26, 1923 and was the daughter of Herman H. and Edna Johnson Graves. She was educated in St. George schools.

In May, 1955 she married Albert C. Ausplund, and they made their home in Rockland. She was a homemaker whose hobbies included crocheting and doing crossword puzzles.

She was predeceased by her husband Albert Ausplund last November.

She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Marion and Arthur Johnson Sr.; a special niece, Cindy Norton and her husband Bob all of Rockland; her wonderful friend Karen Richards and her husband Steve; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She also leaves her many caregivers at the Knox Center for Long-Term Care and Kno-Wal-Lin Home Hospice, who gave her great comfort during her long battle with cancer.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, Sept. 29 at 10 a.m. at the Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery on Mount Vernon Road in Augusta.

Arrangements are with the Burpee, Carpenter and Hutchins Funeral Home at 110 Limerock St. in Rockland.

Priscilla Rose Ulmer

UNION - Priscilla Rose Ulmer, 74, died Sept. 20, 2005 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

She was born April 22, 1931 in Rockland and was the daughter of William and Marion Thayer Young. She grew up in Rockland and attended local schools. She was employed by Sylvania from 1964 until her retirement in 1989 after 24 years of service.

She loved gardening and tole painting and will be remembered for the beautiful quilts she made.

She was predeceased by her sister Hilda Massey in 1986; her son Warren Ulmer in 2001; and her brother Fredrick Young in 2003.

She is survived by her daughters, Lorraine Spady, Kathleen Larrabee and Susan Ulmer, all of Union; her sisters, Marjorie Googins of Rochester, N.H. and Marion Doughty of Rockland; her brothers, Linwood Young of Rockland, Raymond Young of Thomaston and Robert Young of Rockland; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. at the Roseacre Farm Family cemetery at 397 Sidelinger Road in Union.

Arrangements are with the Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Waldoboro.
