Harold C. Ralph Sr.

WALDOBORO - Harold C. Ralph Sr., 93, died Sept. 26, 2005 at his home in Waldoboro.

Mr. Ralph was born in Orff's Corner in Waldoboro on Jan. 5, 1912 and was the son of Ward M. Ralph Sr. and Marjorie Brown Ralph.

He left school at an early age to go to work in a grocery store in Winslows Mills to help support the family.

In 1929 he worked for W.G. Griffin Garage in Lynn, Mass. He returned to Waldoboro and worked for Roland A. Genthner delivering oil and later for the Waldoboro Garage Company.

In 1937, with help from Rhama Philbrook, he opened what is now Corner Exxon. He also started selling used cars and opened a Hudson dealership at this location in 1940. He became a subdealer for International Truck and Pontiac Cars.

In 1945 he purchased a building on Main Street and opened a Dodge and Plymouth dealership. He later moved it to its Route 1 location that houses the Chevrolet dealership that bears his name today.

In 1941 he purchased a pacing mare, Royal Lady II, from Walter Coombs and began a long career of not only owning race horses but also training and driving his own horses. His best horse over the years was Joe Rhap. He drove until the age of 73 and sold his last horse in August 2005.

He bought and sold 4,000 to 5,000 horses, many through the Pine Tree Sales Company that he owned in partnership with Clayton Smith.

In 1965 the New England Harness Writers Association honored him with the Distinguished Service Award. He twice has been honored by the Maine Harness Horseman Association with its Distinguished Service Award. He was presented the N.E. Harness Writers President's Award in 2000.

He was a lifetime member of King Solomon's Lodge #61, the United States Trotting Association and the Maine Harness Horseman's Association.

He was instrumental in building what is now the Sylvania plant and the former Waldoboro Locker. He also helped start Little League in Waldoboro.

He was predeceased by his wife Maude Ralph on March 4, 2005; two brothers, Willis and Ward Ralph; and two sons-in-law, Maynard Eugley and Richard Crabtree.

He is survived by his sons, Ronald E. Ralph and his wife Claire of Waldoboro, and Harold C. Ralph Jr. and his companion Alice Turner of Waldoboro; his daughters, Greta Crabtree and her companion David Sidelinger of Waldoboro, and Helen Eugley of Waldoboro; two brothers, Richard Ralph of Warren and Roy Ralph of Phippsburg; his sister Evelyn Miller of Waldoboro; five grandchildren, Rhonda Conway and her husband Rody of Waldoboro, R. Stephen Ralph and his wife Kelly of Union, Denise Gould and her husband George of Waldoboro, Harolyn York and her companion Jeffrey Evangelos of Friendship, and Lori Wills of Largo, Fla.; 10 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held Friday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home at 949 Main St. in Waldoboro. The Rev. Robert Dorr will officiate. Burial will follow in the Orff's Corner cemetery in Waldoboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice, c/o Northeast Health, 22 White St., Rockland, ME 04841.

Arrangements are with the Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Waldoboro.

John F. Fraser Sr.

SEARSPORT - Senior Chief John F. Fraser, 58, of Searsport and Northport, died Sept. 25, 2005, at a Belfast hospital. He was born April 2, 1947, in Belfast, the son of the late Kenneth W. and Annie (Hawley) Fraser.

He was raised in Searsport and graduated from Searsport District High School. He served in the National Guard for three years and then for more than 20 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring from Brunswick Naval Air Station in 1988. He served as Flight Deck Coordinator on the U.S.S. Eisenhower, a nuclear aircraft carrier. Most recently, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service at the Hampden Distribution Center until his retirement in 2003.

He and his wife, Gwendolyn, then moved to Northport. A very devoted father and grandfather known as "Papa Ike," he loved camping and driving his grandchildren around the campground in a golf cart. He enjoyed woodworking with his special friend, Jack Fraser, of Searsport, and working at the U.S. Post Office Distribution Center with his many friends, including Deborah Rideout of Crouseville. He was a member of the Mariners Masonic Lodge 68 AF&AM, Searsport, and the Anah Temple Shrine.

In addition to his wife, Gwendolyn (Carver) Fraser, of Northport, he is survived by three sons, John Fraser II of Paisley, Fla., Kenneth L. Fraser and his wife, Misty, of Gautier, Miss., and Lincoln T. Fraser and his wife, Joanna, of Shawmut; three grandchildren, Victoria Fraser, Alexander Fraser, and Skylar Fraser; three stepchildren, Jason Loring and his wife, Monica, of Searsmont, Elizabeth Beal and her husband, Nate, of Union, and Laurie Dodge and her husband, Ray, of Warren; their children, Stephanie and Travis Dodge, Jake Richardson, and Hunter and Brianna Loring; sister, Carol Hall and her husband, Daniel, of Searsport; brother, Thomas Fraser and his wife, Betty, of Stockton Springs; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

He was predeceased by his father, Kenneth W. Fraser, in 1974; mother, Annie H. Fraser, in 1993; brother, Kenneth Fraser Jr., in 1970; and sister, Brenda Fraser Littlefield, in 2002.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005, at the First Congregational Church of Searsport, with Rev. Arlin Larson officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Searsport.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Waldo County General Hospital Oncology Department or to the Waldo County Home Health and Hospice, 119 Northport Ave., Belfast, ME 04915. Arrangements are by Young Funeral Home, 31 West Main St., Searsport.

Carolyn D. Boynton

CAMDEN - Carolyn Dudley Boynton, 79, of Camden died suddenly on Sept. 26, 2005 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born on Jan. 3, 1926 in Kingfield and was the daughter of Angie and Lewellyn (Joe) Dudley. Carolyn graduated as valedictorian of her class from Kingfield High School in 1943. She received a bachelor of science degree in home economics from Farmington State Teacher's College in June of 1947.

She began her teaching career at Camden High School in 1947 and taught home economics there for three years prior to her marriage in June of 1950 to George E. Boynton Jr. of Camden. For 16 years, beginning in 1957, she taught evening sewing classes at Camden-Rockport High School. These classes were the forerunner of the adult education program in the Camden area. From 1970 to 1981 she went back to teaching home economics at Camden-Rockport High School. For 12 years after her retirement from Camden-Rockport High School she was a Chapter 1 education technician at Warren Primary School and Union Elementary School. In 1997 she became a tutor for the Literacy Volunteers of America and was a member of the Knox County Retired Teachers Association.

Carolyn was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She had a strong sense of family and passed on the importance of family values to her children. Her home was always a hub of activity. Her children and grandchildren and their friends were always welcome. Over the years, she hosted many family gatherings and celebrations in her home. Her kitchen was frequently a disaster because she was always whipping up a batch of cookies or cooking for a hungry crowd.

She was passionate about sewing. Her children and grandchildren have been gifted with quilts, dresses and Halloween costumes. She loved playing bridge with her pals, reading biographies, tending her flowers and walking along the ocean. She will always be remembered for her strong family values, a wicked sense of humor, a sense of adventure and enthusiasm for life.

She is survived by three sons, Alan and his wife Sandy of Eddington, Mark and his wife Alyce of Thomaston, and Paul of Camden; a daughter, Beth and her husband Douglas of Manchester, Vt.; six grandchildren, Todd and his wife Amy, Kerry, Abby, Ethan, Benjamin and Kelsea; two great-granddaughters, Cassidy and Emily; two nieces and two nephews; and a brother, Lucien and his wife Salli of Kingfield.

In celebration of Carolyn's life, the family will be at 4 Norwood Ave. in Camden on Sunday, Oct. 9. Visitors are welcome from 1 to 3 p.m. A private burial will be held at the family's discretion.

Everard J. Brierley

BELFAST - Everard "Pete" Brierley, 87, of Belfast, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, at a local health-care facility. born July 20, 1918, in Belfast, he was the son of G. Edward and Charlotte (Frost) Brierley.

Pete was an avid golfer and an excellent carpenter. He was an umpire for a semi-pro baseball league and for Little League teams in Belfast and Bowdoinham. He was an avid sports fan and loved to attend events that included his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed music, hunting and will be remembered as always singing or whistling.

He was predeceased by his wife, Annie Brierley; a brother, Edward; two sisters, Eleanor and Clarice; his first wife, Georgia Ellis Brierley; and a grandson, Barrett Catlin.

Pete is survived by a son, Peter Brierley and his wife, Maureen, of Texas; two daughters, Sandra Butler and her husband, Donald, of NJ, and Sharon Brassey-Brierley, of England; one stepdaughter, Janice Hawthorne and her husband, John, of Belfast; one stepson, Howard Larrabee and his wife, Lisa, of Texas; grandchildren, including Greg Brierley, Paris Brierley, Tobey Butler, Melanie Johnson, Deirdre Catlin, Shelagh Dorn, Peter Catlin, Scott Hawthorne, Alison Hawthorne, Lisa Hawthorne, Howard Larrabee III, Terrie Desnoyers, Brett Larrabee, Ashley Larrabee and Tyler Larrabee; 21 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Judy Warren.

Donations preferred to Waldo County Home Health Care and Hospice PO Box 772, Belfast, ME 04915. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, at Rackliffe Funeral Home, with Rev. Joel Krueger officiating.

Arrangements are with Rackliffe Funeral Home, 54 Church St., Belfast, ME.

Cleve M. Harvey

SEARSPORT - Cleve M. Harvey, 69, of Searsport, died Sept. 27, 2005, at a local health-care facility. He was born in Belfast on Oct. 7, 1935, the son of Cleve A. and Gladys Harvey.

Cleve worked as a woodsman for most of his life. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, fiddleheading and clamming. Cleve was known for helping anyone in need and always would bring home anyone who needed a place to stay. His family will always remember him for the way he treated people equally.

Cleve was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Agnes Perkins, of Frankfort; and a brother, Elmo Harvey, of Ohio.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Maralyn (Tozier) Harvey; six children, Linda Harvey and boyfriend, John Curtis, Melford Harvey and wife, Jo-lene, Laurie Engstrom and husband, Kirt, Brenda Clark and boyfriend, Timothy White, Belinda Smith and husband, Daniel, Amanda Whitcomb and husband, William; two sisters, Joyce Gross, of Stockton Springs, and Mavis Mills, of Ohio; one brother, Lloyd Harvey, of Ohio; 21 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Cleve is also survived by special friends, Kenneth Ward, Bo-Bo Littlefield, Jay Colcord, Bill Miller and Steve Grant; and many nieces and nephews, including three special nephews, Butch, Kenneth and Paul Beldon.

A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast, with Rev. Matt Shaw officiating. Interment followed at Greenlawn Cemetery, in Swanville.

Edythe L. Taylor

WALDOBORO - Edythe L. Taylor, 75, died Sept. 25, 2005 in Waldoboro, ending her 15-year battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

She was born on Aug. 19, 1930 in So. Weymouth, Mass. and was the daughter of Harold and Marion (West) Lincoln. She graduated from Abington High School in 1948, and later attended Louisiana State University before graduating from Fisher Business School in Boston in 1951.

After graduation, she worked for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Stock Exchange. In 1955 she moved to Syracuse, N.Y. where she worked for Proctor and Gamble. While in Syracuse, she married Roy Clifton Taylor on April 25, 1959. Following her marriage, she held a variety of secretarial positions with the United Methodist Church and the West Springfield, Mass. school system.

She was active at the University Methodist Church in Syracuse and the Church of the Atonement in Westfield, Mass. She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Canada, especially Prince Edward Island. She always loved the sights and sounds of the ocean and moved to Damariscotta in 1994.

She was predeceased by her husband in January 1990; and her brother Roy Alan Lincoln in May 1997.

She is survived by her only child, Kathleen Marie Taylor Jackson of Damariscotta; three grandchildren, Nathaniel Taylor Jackson of Goose Creek, S.C., and Matthew Taylor Jackson and Katherine Taylor Jackson of Newcastle; her aunts, Helen Margaret West Oddie Golder of West Bridgewater, Mass. and Lillian Frances Lyons West of Galena, Ill.; her sisters-in-law, Judith Diane Schuyler Lincoln of Camillus, N.Y. and Moira Higgins Taylor of South Lancaster, Mass.; and six nieces and nephews and many cousins.

A service will be held Sunday, Oct. 2 at 8 a.m. at the Pemaquid Lighthouse with the Revs. Ken Dale and Susan Winter co-officiating. Those unable to attend are invited to spend a moment at the nearest body of water remembering Edythe and enjoying a bowl of ice cream.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Second Congregational Church, Newcastle, ME 04553.

Arrangements are with the Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center at 612 Main St. in Damariscotta.

Claire J. Andrews

SEARSMONT - Claire J. Andrews, 91, of Searsmont, passed away Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005, at a local health-care facility. She was born in Massachusetts on Nov. 11, 1913, the daughter of Frank and Ottimia (Becker) Oberle.

Claire was an avid reader and enjoyed going to the Belfast Free Library. She worked as a secretary for a shipyard in Massachusetts before moving to Maine.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Eldon, and a brother. Claire is survived by a cousin, Gertrude Daneau, of Massachusetts; and friends, Barbara Stackpole, Susan Ricci, Mary Doolan, Donna Doolan and Lawrence Doolan and family, and Ruth and Edgar Thomas.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at the old Maine Veterans Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.

Louise Pauline Housel

CAMDEN - Louise Pauline Housel of Camden, formerly of Audubon, N.J., died Sept. 20, 2005 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

Miss Housel was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. She earned her bachelor's degree from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania in 1933 and started teaching high school in 1938. She was a resident of Audubon during her 39-year tenure at Audubon High School.

In 1967, she purchased property in Camden, Maine where she spent her summers until she retired in 1977 and made her home by the Penobscot Bay. That year the Audubon High School Le Souvenir Committee dedicated its annual yearbook to her in recognition of her achievements. She was also inducted into the Audubon High School Alumni Association, Ring of Honor. She taught Latin, French and German and was an advisor, mentor and friend to many of her students.

Miss Housel was the daughter of the late Henry J. and Louise Schneider Housel, sister of the late Frederick Housel Sr. and niece of the late Pauline Hutchings.

She is survived by her sister, Ruth Lutz and her husband Charles of South Royalton, Vt; her nephews, Frederick H. Housel Jr, and his wife Marie of Kaneohe, Hawaii and Theodore F.L. Housel and his wife Denise of Egg Harbor, N.J.; her great-nieces and nephews, Marissa, Frederick, William, Victoria Louise, Gabrielle, Caroline and Juliette; and a dear friend Lynda Larner of Camden.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, Sept. 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Henry Funeral Home at 152 West Atlantic Ave. in Audubon, N.J. A funeral service will be held on Friday, Sept. 30 at 11 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at 325 S. White House Pike in Audubon, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Burial will be in Harleigh cemetery in Camden City, N.J.

Local arrangements are with the Laite Funeral Home at 9 Mountain St. in Camden.

Stephen Kenneth Prior Sr.

BREMEN - Stephen Kenneth Prior Sr. died suddenly on Sept. 28, 2005 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

He was born in Bremen on April 16, 1946 and was the son of Kenneth and Gwendolyn Gross Prior. He was raised and educated in Bremen and went to college in New York. He returned to Bremen to lobster and clam; he then began his career as a full-time lobsterman until his death.

He was locally known as "The King" and "Animal." He had a knack of always making people laugh and could make people smile through the tough times.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association and loved hunting. He was the owner of the boat Lori A.

He will be greatly missed by his family.

He was predeceased by his mother Gwendolyn Hanna; his brother Frank Prior and his niece Lori Prior.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Brenda J. Prior of Bremen; his sons, Stephen K. Prior Jr. and John L. Prior of Bremen; his father Kenneth S. Prior of Bremen; his brother, Craig Prior and his wife Cindy of Bremen; his sisters, Diane Drinkwater and her husband Alan of Owls Head, and Tracy Crowell and her husband Gilbert of Jefferson; and his grandchildren, Dustin, Brittany, Garrett, Karaline and Max Prior of Bremen and Ethan Campbell of Bremen.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday, Oct. 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home at 949 Main St. in Waldoboro. A celebration of Stephen's life will be held Monday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Dorr officiating. A service of burial will follow at the Hillside cemetery in Bremen.

Arrangements are with the Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Waldoboro.
