Raymond Squire, 83

ACTON - Raymond H. Squire, 83, of Acton died Jan. 19, 2003 at the Greenwood Center in Sanford.

He was born on Jan. 8, 1920 in Spencer, Mass., the son of Edmund and Louise Squire. He is a 1938 graduation of Needham High School of Massachusetts and a 1942 graduate of Middlebury College in Vermont.

Following his education he served in the Aleutian Islands with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Upon his return to the states he sold fine men's apparel for many years.

He was former president of the Wells Chamber of Commerce, a charter member of the Wells Rotary Club, and very active in civic affairs in both Wells and Acton. He was an active musician and antique connoisseur. In the summer months you might find him as a tour bus guide in Kennebunkport, or playing drums for the Milton Mills Music Masters. He was also an active member of the North Parish Congregational Church of Sanford where he served as a past trustee.

Surviving is his wife Virginia (Barrett) Squire of Acton; four stepchildren, Janice Fulmer of Sanford, Richard Davies of Hallowell, William Davies of York and Thomas Davies of Hollis, N.H.; and five step-grandchildren, Sara, Laura and Steven Fulmer, and Jonathan and Elizabeth Davies.

A funeral service was held Friday at the North Parish Congregational Church of Sanford.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Waban Child Development Center, c/o Waban Projects, 5 Dunaway Dr., Sanford, ME 04073.

George Young, 84

KENNEBUNK - George F. Young, 84, a resident of Gendron Lane, Kennebunk died Jan. 26, 2003 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford. He was the husband of Barbara Anne (Shea) Young.

He was born in Lynn, Mass., June 25, 1925, a son Michael and Alice (Baldwin) Young. He graduated from Lynn English High School, Northeastern University and received his master in business administration from the University of Massachusetts. He was employed at the General Electric Company in Lynn, Mass., Somersworth, N.H. and South Portland, Maine. From 1933-1980 his career with General Electric was in sales and management.

He moved to the Kennebunks in 1980 where he became a member of the Webhannet Golf Club at Kennebunk Beach. He enjoyed a good game of golf and the outdoors.

He is survived by his wife Barbara S. Young of Kennebunk; one brother, Gerald A. Young of Titusville, Fla.; one sister, Barbara Marchesseault of South Windsor, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St. Kennebunk with the Rev. Laurent LaPlante officiating. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Somersworth, N.H. later in the spring.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice in Mr. Young's memory.

Marjorie Campbell, 92

WELLS - Marjorie Darling Fitch Campbell, 92, retired teacher, librarian and philanthropist, died on Jan. 8, 2003 at her home in Wells after a brief illness.

She was born April 10, 1910 in Lynn, Mass., daughter of late Frank Ernest and Martha Ann (Darling) Fitch.

She married late C. Fred P. Campbell in 1940. She was a graduate of Haverhill High School (1927) and obtained a bachelor of science degree from Bridgewater State College (1931) before continuing her education with postgraduate studies at Columbia University, Boston University, and Simmons College with course work directed toward teaching the mentally disabled and the study of library science. She taught school in Haverhill and Southbridge, Mass., from 1931 to 1954. Her leadership qualities led her to the presidency of the Teachers Association (1950-52). In 1954 she made a career move to serve as the librarian of Tantasqua Regional High School in Sturbridge, Mass. until 1968. During those years she founded the Massachusetts School Library Association, chaired the M.S.L. Steering Committee, was a member of the Joint Committee New England School Development Council, N.E. Library Association and of the MA Instructional Materials Planning Group.

Her contributions to the field of education were noted in the fifth Edition of "Who's Who of American Women." She and her husband also managed a

land development company, Shephard Hills Inc. in Sturbridge, Mass. from 1946 to 1971. After her retirement, she and her husband moved to Wells

(1971) where she was involved with the planning of the Wells Public Library and later on elected to the board of directors. She also served on the

Executive Board of the Southern Maine Library District Council as well as the Maine Library Trustees Association. She was a member of the Ogunquit Women's Club, a dedicated community servant, a skilled artist and a great friend.

Before her passing, she wanted all to know that she had "had a good life!" She will be greatly missed by family members, friends and associates.

A graveside memorial will be held in the spring 2003 in East Derry, N.H.

Theodore Johns, 57

WELLS - Theodore R. "Ted" "Butch" Johns, 57, of 75 Elmere Rd. died unexpectedly Jan. 5, 2003 at his residence.

He was born on Nov. 6, 1945 in Belfast, Maine, the son of Theodore R. and Helena (Riley) Johns and was a 1964 graduate of York High School.

He had been an iron worker for Local 496 for 20 years. From 1988 until 1990 he was employed as an electrician's helper at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

In 1991 he began college and received an associate degree in accounting from Hesser College in 1993. He continued his studies and graduated from New Hampshire College in 1995 with a bachelor of science in accounting.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Sanford. He enjoyed antiquing and collecting banks and was a member of the Still Bank Collector Club of America.

Survivors include his wife whom he married in 1974, Lucille (LeBlanc) Johns; two sons, Brian Raymond Johns of Wells and a son from a previous marriage, Theodore R. Libby of Naples, Fla.; two daughters, Amy Katherine Theriault and Rebecca Elizabeth Johns both of Wells; his parents, Theodore R. and Helena M. Johns of Wells; four brothers, Kenneth John and his wife, Jean of York, Philip Johns of Wells, Stephen Johns of Kittery and Thomas Johns and his wife, Diane of So. Berwick; his mother-in-law, Juliette LeBlanc of Wells; two grandchildren, Emily Theresa Theriault and Michael Joshua Libby; one nephew and two nieces.

The family will conduct private services.

Warren Thurber, 87

WELLS - Warren Erving Thurber, 87, a resident of Roger Bradgon Road, Wells, formerly of Westboro, Mass., died Dec. 27, 2002 at his home after a brief illness.

He was born in Westboro, Mass. on Aug. 26, 1915, a son of L. Edgar and Susie H. (Aitkins) Thurber and attended Westboro Public Schools.

He was a World War II veteran and served in the US. Army.

He was employed by the Department of Public Works for the town of Hudson, Mass. and also worked for town of Westboro, Mass., as chief plant operator.

He was predeceased by a son, Ronald Payne and three brothers, William, Herbert and John Thurber and a sister Alice Johnson.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Billie Ann (Lamont) Thurber of Wells; one daughter, Darlene McLaughin of Marlboro and two step-daughters, Donna Johnson of Moody and Meredith Johnson of Hudson, Mass.; one sister, Louise Adams of New Hampshire; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Tuesday at the Rand-Harper Funeral Home, Westboro, Mass.

Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery, Westboro, MA.

Arnold Jones, 91

KENNEBUNK - Arnold Jones, 91, of Kennebunk, current resident of Kennebunk Nursing Center, died peacefully in his sleep the morning of Dec. 30, 2002. He was born Oct. 8, 1911 in Winchester, Mass., the son of J. Howard and Blanche (Howard) Jones. He was a graduate of Phillips Andover Academy, Yale University, and Boston University Law School class of 1937.

He practiced law in the Boston area several years after graduating. He entered the United States Army during World War II. He was employed by the Atomic Energy Commission and Sandia Corporation of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He spent his later years in the Kennebunkport area researching titles for a local attorney.

He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor B. Jones, a son Alan B. Jones, a daughter Anne Bancroft Kerr and his beloved sister Mildred J. Castner.

Surviving are four sons, Arnold J. Jones (Jerry) of Kennebunk, Dana H. Jones of Stafford, Va., Peter E. Bancroft of Baltimore, Md., Mark R. Bancroft of Virginia Beach, Va.; one daughter, Judith Bancroft Wallace of Amherst, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A private family service will be held in the spring. Arrangements are by Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford, ME 04005.

Richard Hayes, 71

NORTH BERWICK - Richard Hayes of North Berwick died in Dover, N.H. on Jan. 3, 2003.

He graduated from North Berwick High School in 1951. He had been employed at Tilcon of Maine, as a truck driver until 1995 when he retired.

He is survived by his dearest companion Jacquelyn Barry. At his request, there will not be visiting hours or a funeral. There will be a graveside service in the spring at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, North Berwick.

Friends who wish may contribute to North Berwick Rescue Squad, PO Box 324, North Berwick, ME 03906.

Arrangements are by the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.

Roger Annis, 95

WELLS - Roger Lee Annis, 95, of Flintlock Village, died Jan. 4, 2003 at York Hospital.

At his request, there will be no visiting hours or funeral. A graveside service will be held in the Hillside Cemetery, North Berwick, in the spring.

Arrangements are by the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.

Carlton Boston, 77

NORTH BERWICK - Carlton R. "Joe" Boston, 77, of Elm Street, passed away Jan. 6, 2003 at home following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Derry, N.H., on May 16, 1925, a son of Harland and Pearl (Thompson) Boston. He was raised in South Berwick and attended Berwick Academy.

He was a U.S. Navy Seabees veteran of World War II, serving with the 132nd Advanced Base Construction Depot in Hawaii, Guam and Satpan.

He lived in North Berwick, where he served as a town selectman and fire chief. He was a member of the Yorkshire Lodge No. 179 AF&AM and a Past Master of the Beaver Dam Grange. He helped establish the North Berwick Little League and was a coach for many years.

He worked for Hussey Seating Company in North Berwick for 46 years, retiring as sales estimator in 1978.

He was a family man and dearly loved his children and grandchildren. He simply enjoyed spending time with them and found family gatherings most enjoyable. Interests he shared with family and friends included hunting, fishing, camping and snowmobiling. If there was ever a helping hand needed, he was always there.

During retirement, his winters were spent with his wife and friends at his home in Zephyrhills, Fla.

He was the beloved husband of 55 years to Kathleen (Corson) Boston. He was the loving father of two daughters, Carol Doiron and her husband Robert, Nancy Durocher and husband Larry, two sons, Robert Boston and wife Patricia and Jay Boston and wife Priscille, all of North Berwick; eight beloved grandchildren, Scott Durocher of Dover, N.H., Stacey Durocher and wife Nichole of Wells, Andrea Palmer and husband Travis of Sanford, Matthew Doiron, Nicholas Boston, Cory Boston, Danielle Boston and Kayla Boston, all of North Berwick; two great-grandsons; one brother, David Boston of Lebanon; one sister, Maxine Caron of North Berwick; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers Oliver, Howard, Gene and Walter Boston, all of North Berwick.

A funeral service was held Wednesday at the Bethel Christian Church, North Berwick, with Rev. Robert G. Cole Sr., officiating. Spring Interment in Hillside Cemetery, North Berwick.

Family flowers only. Friends who wish may contribute to Wentworth Homecare and Hospice, 113 New Rochester Rd., Suite 4, Dover, N.H. 03820.

Arrangements are by the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.

Barbara DeMallie, 91

KENNEBUNK - Barbara (Cooke) DeMallie, 91, of Kennebunk, died Jan. 3, 2003, following a brief illness.

Born in Lowell, Mass., on March 11, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Bertha (Runels) Cooke. She attended elementary and high school in Lowell and was a graduate of Simmons College, Boston.

She was an administrative secretary in the accounting department of the Saco / Lowell Corp. in Lowell. For many years, she and her former husband ran a hardware store in Westwood, Mass. After her retirement, she lived at Goose Rocks Beach for more than 30 years and was the assistant treasurer of the South Congregational Church in Kennebunkport for many years.

She was a member, along with many friends, of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church Needlepointers. She was also a member of the Women's Association of the South Congregational Church, the Good Cheer Club and the Embroiderers' Guild of America.

She is survived by two cousins, Jane Charlton and Miriam Runels DeMallie; one sister-in-law, Dorothy R. Cooke Reed; seven nieces and nephews, Bertha H. Safford, Martha J. Hanner, Wendy Cooke Taylor, Charles E. Cooke III, Richard T. Cooke, Ann Cooke Leggat, and William M. Cooke; and many grandnieces and nephews.

Two brothers, Charles E. Cooke Jr. and Henry M. Cooke, and a sister, Eunice C. Safford, predeceased her. She was blessed with many wonderful friends.

A celebration of her life will be held in the spring.

Mary Etheridge, 90

KENNEBUNK - Mary A. (Murphy) Etheridge, 90, a former resident of Pine Bluff, Cat Mousam Road, Kennebunk died Jan. 1, 2003 at the Lake Region General Hospital in Laconia, N.H. after a brief illness.

She was born in Milton, Mass. on June 19, 1912, a daughter of Edward T. and Margaret (Gibbons) Murphy. She attended Milton, Mass. schools and graduated from Milton High School the class of 1930.

She was a bookkeeper for more than 10 years at The Meadows Restaurant in Framingham, Mass., which was owned by Vaughan Monroe. She also worked at the Sydney Hill Country Club in Chestnut Hill, Mass. until 1969. She was a member of the Christ Church Women's Circle and a communicant of St. Martha Church both of Kennebunk.

Two brothers, Edward and Vincent Murphy and a sister Marguerite Burwell predeceased her.

She is survived by her son Leonard Etheridge of Acworth, Ga.; three daughters, Mrs. David (Barbara) Kemp of Lakeland, Fla., Mrs. Richard (Marcia) Carter of Kennebunk and Mrs. William (Virginia) Littlefield of Gilford, N.H. whom she lived with and a sister Lillian Sullivan of Mattapan, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

There were no calling hours.

A Funeral Mass was held Friday at St. Martha Church, Portland Road, Kennebunk, with Rev. Laurent Laplante officiating. Burial was in United Cemetery, Margaree Valley, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
