Age 43, passed away Friday, January 28, 2005. He was born May 17, 1961 in Wishek, ND, the son of the late Michael and Eva (Schwartzenberger) Schmitt. Survivors include- his loving wife, Mary Ann (Mullens) Schmitt; two sons, Michael and Daniel Schmitt; stepson, Charles Yeary II; stepdaughter, Candice Dailey; three grandchildren; six brothers; eight sisters; and several nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones. The funeral mass will be 11-00 A.M. Tuesday, February 1 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, 910 Austin Drive, Saline with Fr. Roger Prokop as celebrant. Burial will follow in Highland cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the family would be greatly appreciated. Envelopes are available at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel where the family will receive friends 7-9 P.M. Monday.

Schock, Virginia C.

Age 82, passed away Thursday, December 9, 2004. She was born February 19, 1922 in Detroit, Michigan. Survivors include- five daughters, Patti Simpson, Joyce (Richard) Kingsbury, Barbara (William) Krueger, Diana (Richard) Marsh and Vicki (John) Church; four sons, Clyde (Barbara), Dennis (Colleen) Jeff (Beckki) and Alan (Lisa) Schock; 25 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter C. Schock and five children, Woody, Rick, Peter, Bonnie and Nancy Schock. The funeral service will be 1-30 P.M. Monday, December 13 at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel with Pastor Gordon Moore officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6-9 P.M. Saturday and 2-4 & 6-9 P.M. Sunday.

Smith, Sharon E.

Age 50, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2005 at her home following an extended illness. She was born June 2, 1954 in Detroit, the daughter of Peter L. and Cora L. (Murray) Hughes. Survivors include- one son, Chris (Angela Stingley) and six grandchildren, Janee, Christopher, Kristen, Terrell, Ajhane and Khyre. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Lawrence P. Hughes, her husband, James Jenkins and one son, Leon Smith Jr. The funeral service will be 11-00 A.M. Friday, March 18 at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Knollwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6-9 P.M. Thursday.

Age 80, passed away Friday, December 17, 2004 following a short illness. She was born July 16, 1924 in Munith, MI, the daughter of Harold and Ruth (Hirth) Ford. She was a graduate of Michigan State Normal College (EMU). On September 2, 1945, she married Charles W. Smith and he preceded her in death August 4, 1986. She was a teacher with the Ypsilanti Public Schools for many years. Virginia was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Saline; United Methodist Women; ADK Sorority; the LEO Group; Widows Group; and the WARSP. Survivors include - four sons, William of Lake Oswego, OR, Douglas (Bonnie) of Littleton, CO, Donald (Julie) of Lake Oswego, OR and John (Debbie) Smith of DeWitt, MI; three daughters, Carolyn Smith of Saline, MI, Nancy (LeRoy) Capper of Cumberland MD and Debra Carbaugh of Chicopee, MA; 18 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; three sisters, Kathleen Wanroy of Billings, MT, Joan (Art) Gibbs of Coldwater, MI and Bethel (Richard) Grosshans of Mason, MI; brother-in-law, Raymond (Dorothy) Smith; sister-in-law, Malvina (Louis) Smith McCreight of Rolling Hills Estates, CA; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves special friends “The Erickson Girls.” There will be a memorial service 11 -00 A.M. Friday, January 21, 2005 at the First United Methodist of Saline with Pastor Jim Tuttle and Rev. Marsha Wooley co-officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Saline or the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the church where the family will receive friends after 10 -00 A.M. Friday, January 21, 2005.

Stevens, John D.
Ann Arbor, MI

John D. Stevens of Ann Arbor died Thursday, March 10, 2005 at Arbor Hospice Residence. He retired in 1997 after 30 years teaching journalism and communication at the University of Michigan. From 1984 to 1987, he was chair of the Department of Communication. He also taught at the Universities of Oregon and Wisconsin and guest lectured at many other universities. He was 71. His teaching and research focused on the First Amendment and the history of American media. He was the author of five books and more than sixty journal articles, many of which traced the struggle of Americans to speak out for social justice or to dissent against the force of popular public opinion in times of national crisis. Stevens also wrote about how the media sometimes unfairly characterized African Americans or other minorities. His scholarly work is widely cited. A former newspaper reporter and editor, Stevens began his career at the Terre Haute, IN Star and later worked on the Indianapolis Star. He was employed as a public relations man by the Armstrong Cork Company in Lancaster, PA and by Washington State University in Pullman, WA. He was also a free-lance writer for magazines and for a time edited his own magazine. He held various offices in the Society of Professional Journalists and was a former head of the History Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Stevens spent a year in New York City as a Freedom Forum Fellow in 1988-1989. He also had been a Fellow one summer at the East-West Center in Hawaii. He was a widely known teacher and scholar and was active for many years in the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. He presented dozens of scholarly papers at the annual meetings of other associations, such as the American Popular Culture Association. The Midwest Division of AEJMC named an annual prize for outstanding student scholarship in his honor in 1997. For years Stevens was active in Ann Arbor community theater as an actor or in roles behind the stage. He and his wife traveled widely over the years. He earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism and political science from Indiana University in 1955. His master’s was from Washington State and his Ph.D from the University of Wisconsin. Born and educated in Lafayette, IN, he was the only child of James and Lucille Stevens. Both are deceased. He is survived by his widow, Gwen Stevens of Ann Arbor and his daughter, Victoria Keinert of Ames, Iowa and her family and his son, Jeffrey Stevens of Ann Arbor and his family. He also is survived by his stepchildren, Phil, Glen, Jim and Linda, and their families. He is survived by a total of nine grandchildren and step grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held from 12-2 P.M. Saturday, March 19, 2005 at the Michigan League – Hussey Room, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either the Diabetes Research Fund, U of M Medical Development, 301 E. Liberty, Ste. 400, Ann Arbor, MI 48104 or Arbor Hospice Residence, 2366 Oak Valley, Ann Arbor, MI 48103. Arrangements by STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel.

Swidan, Mizied Habeeb “Mitch”
Ypsilanti, MI

Age 73, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at his residence, surrounded by his family and friends. He was born December 1, 1931 in El-Husn, Jordan, the son of Habeeb Abdulla and Hajar Saleem Swidan. He came to the United States in 1956. On July 31, 1961, he married Mary Lou Danahar and she survives. Mr. Swidan owned and operated Cleopatra Hair Fashion in Ypsilanti for 25 years. He then owned several other businesses. He cherished his family and family outings and enjoyed barbecuing for family and friends. In addition to his loving wife of 43 years, survivors include- two sons, Kareem (Linda) and Akrum (Judi) Swidan, both of Ypsilanti; three grandchildren, Danielle, Ryan and Kyle; one sister, Hind (Kamal); three brothers, Zawad (Muna), Jacob (Carla) and Zedan (Amal) Swidan; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Zied, Talab, Mishrif, Issa and Zaid. The funeral mass will be 11-00 A.M. Friday, March 18 at St. Michael’s Church, 585 N. Mill Street, Plymouth, MI. Burial will follow in Union-Udell cemetery. The family will greet friends at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel 2-4 & 6-9 P.M. Thursday.

Sykes, Paul T.
Belleville, MI

Age 75, passed away Thursday, December 23, 2004 following an extended illness. He was born December 22, 1929 in Tennessee. The funeral service will be 3-00 P.M. Sunday, December 26 at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel. Cremation will follow. Contributions may be made to the family. Envelopes are available at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 1-00 P.M. until time of service Sunday.

Tomford, Glenn Ernest
Ypsilanti, MI

Age 70, passed away Thursday, February 10, 2005 at home. He was born August 24, 1934 in Ypsilanti, the son of Ernest and Frieda (Schemn) Tomford. On January 28, 1956, he married Shirley Duede in Ypsilanti and she survives. Glenn was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and worked for Ford Motor Company as a welder for 18 years. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish and camp with his family and friends. He also coached little league baseball. In addition to his loving wife of 48 years, survivors include- one daughter, Kelly Lawrence of Ypsilanti; two sons, Glenn (Kathy) Tomford and Jeff, both of Ypsilanti; five grandchildren, Eric, Matthew, Aaron, Chloe and Callie; one sister, Lorraine Butler of Ypsilanti; and a special lifelong friend who was like a brother, Richard Henry of Detroit; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters. The funeral service will be 2-00 P.M. Monday, February 14 at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel with Pastor Jonathan Bomgren officiating. Burial will follow in Highland cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6 2-4 & 6-9 P.M. Sunday.

Tooles, Charlotte M.
Ypsilanti, MI

Age 54, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2005. She was born October 23, 1950 in Ypsilanti, the daughter of Charles and Etta (Knox) Franklin. She was a 1969 graduate of Ypsilanti High School. On July 16, 1977, she married Leon Tooles and he survives. Charlotte was a devoted member of Messias Temple Church. Other survivors include - her mother, Etta Franklin of Whitmore Lake; one son, Shaun Jenkins of Las Vegas, NV; three sisters, Teresa (Derrick) Thomas of Atlanta, GA, Kim Franklin of Ann Arbor and Dale (Earl) Smith of Whitmore Lake; one brother, Charles Franklin of Ann Arbor; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles and one sister, Carol Ann Sanders. The funeral service will be 11 -00 A.M. Friday, January 14 at Messias Temple Church, 200 Harriet with Elder Harry Grayson officiating. Burial will follow in United Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel 6-9 P.M. Thursday with the family hour from 7-8 P.M. There will also be visitation at the church from 10 A.M. until time of service Friday.

Turner, Wanda

Age 39, passed away Saturday, January 15, 2005 at home. She was born December 6, 1965 in Detroit, the daughter of George and Ida Jackson. Wanda worked for Planned Parenthood in Ann Arbor. She is survived by- her husband, Anthony; two daughters, Carmen and Anika; one son, Anthony; her mother, Ida Jackson; three brothers, Rev. Dwayne Henderson, Kenneth Jackson and Chris Jackson; two sisters, Shirley Ervin and Mattie Johnson; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her father and one sister, Annie Lee White. The funeral service will be 11-00 A.M. Friday, January 21 at New Testament Baptist Church, 1230 W. MI Avenue with Rev. Freddie Banks officiating. Burial will follow in United Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 6-9 P.M. Thursday at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel where the family hour will be from 7-8 P.M.

VanBuren, Gerald J.
Ypsilanti, MI

Age 72, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2005 in Cocoa Beach, FL. He was born August 15, 1932 in Detroit, the son of Frank and Marguerite (Eissile) VanBuren. On September 24, 1960, he married Dolores A. Kramer and she survives. Other survivors include- five children, Joseph, Michael (Jacqui) and Theresa VanBuren, all of Ypsilanti, Laura (Michael) Hunt of Lake City, MI and William VanBuren of Ypsilanti; six grandchildren; and one sister, Judith (Robert) Adkinson of St. Clair Shores, MI. He was preceded in death by one brother, Franklin. The funeral mass will be 11-00 A.M. Wednesday, March 16 at Transfiguration Catholic Church, 1301 S. Harris, Ypsilanti with Rev. Fr. David Franco O.S.F.S. as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. John cemetery. The family will receive friends at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel 6-9 P.M. Tuesday.

Age 80, died peacefully Sunday, November 14, 2004 at Superior Woods. He was born May 20, 1924 in Ypsilanti, the son of George N. and Helen (Watson) Waterbury. On May 27, 1949 he married Betty Renton and she preceded him in death February 1, 1999. Mr. Waterbury was employed by General Motors Willow Run plant for over 30 years, retiring in 1985. Survivors include two sons, Gary (Judy) Dapprich of Belleville and Rick (Mary) Dapprich of Clinton; six grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; one sister, Edna White of Dundee; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Bevier and Donna Mae Anderson. The funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 17 at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Arborcrest Memorial Park. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home where the family will receive friends 4-8 P.M. Tuesday and 12 noon until time of service Wednesday.

Age 81, passed away Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at Oakwood Heritage Hospital. She was born November 23, 1923 in Ypsilanti, the daughter of Francis and Faith (Whitman) Lennox. On January 2, 1942, she married Nelson Waterbury and he preceded her in death February 9, 1988. Ruth was a member of Ypsilanti Baptist Temple. Survivors include- two sons, Wayne (Maryann) Waterbury and Dennis Waterbury; one daughter, Sherry (Kenneth) Hunroe; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. The funeral service will be 11-00 A.M. Saturday, February 26 at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Arborcrest Memorial Park, Ann Arbor. Contributions may be made to the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. Envelopes are available at the funeral home where the family will receive friends 2-4 & 6-9 P.M. Friday.
