E. LEE COLLIER

Unadilla Township

E. Lee Collier, 62, of Unadilla Township died Feb. 9, 2005, at his home. He was born Nov. 27, 1942, in Detroit, the son of Eldon and Blanche ( Griffy) Collier.

Mr. Collier had lived in the area since 1968 and was an active member of North Lake United Methodist Church.

He graduated from Oakland Police Academy in 1966, and had 20 years as a Washtenaw County Sheriff's Deputy.

Mr. Collier served in the U.S. Air Force from March 1961 to March 1965.

On July 6, 1963, he married Sue Matteson in Pontiac and she survives. Also surviving are his mother of Chelsea; four children, Marcella (Mark) Pingaro of Texas, Michael (Candyce) Collier of Martin, Christopher (Rhondell) Collier and Erin (Jonathon) Soluk, both of Gregory; one brother-in-law, James Hazel of Berkley; and four grandchildren, Kathryn, Nicholas, Austin and Shelby.

He was preceded in death by his father and one sister, Alice Hazel.

A funeral was held Monday at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea. The Rev Alice Sheffield officiated. Burial was at North Lake cemetery in Dexter Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to North Lake United Methodist Church.

JOANNE J. HENES

Ann Arbor

Joanne J. Henes, 73, of Ann Arbor died Feb. 12, 2005, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was born Sept. 9, 1931, in Webster Township, the daughter of Harry and Helen (Wood) French.

She had live in Ann Arbor for the past 18 years and enjoyed bingo, gardening, cooking German sweet chocolate cakes, and her bird P.D.

Surviving are four children, Debbie (Larry) Jarae of Florida, Judy (Paul Elrod) Bailey of Milan, Dorene (Randy) Callaway of Texas and Paul Henes of Dexter; four grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Harris of Chelsea and May (Duane) Polland of Brighton; and one brother, Richard French of Chelsea.

She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Fred Henes; two brothers; and three sisters.

A funeral was held 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea. The Rev. Dena Cleaver-Bartholomew officiated. Burial followed at Oak Grove East cemetery in Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may be made to Huron Valley Humane Society.

MARK A. GRAMMATICO

Chelsea

Mark A. Grammatico, 48, of Chelsea died Feb. 8, 2005, at his home. He was born Aug. 23, 1956, in Ann Arbor, the son of Alfred and Dorothy (Hafner) Grammatico.

Mr. Grammatico had lived in the area all his life and worked for Master Keys Northern for several years.

Surviving are four children, Aaron Grammatico of Chelsea, Mark A. Grammatico Jr. of Kalamazoo, Jason Grammatico of Baldwin and Angel Grammatico of Ypsilanti; his brothers and sisters, Diane (Curmit) Gipson of Jackson, Shirley (Tony) Keezer of Chelsea, Alfred Jr. (Sandy) Grammatico of Pinckney, Loralynn (David) Cales of Florida and Francis Grammatico of Chelsea; one grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral was held Saturday at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea. The Rev. William Turner officiated. Burial followed at Mount Olivet cemetery in Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Angel Grammatico Educational Fund.

JOYCE M. EISEMAN

Chelsea

Joyce M. Eiseman, 74, of Chelsea died Feb. 12, 2005, at the Evangelical Home in Saline under the loving care of LeRoy and Dawn Schiller, Lucy Schiller, Norine Collins, and her best friend, Dorothy Hellner.

Ms. Eiseman was born Jan. 7, 1931, in Chelsea, the daughter of Paul and Olga (Alber) Eiseman.She lived in Chelsea all of her life. She was formerly a member of St. John's United Church of Christ at Rogers Corners.

Ms. Eiseman served as the Lima Town Hall manager at one time. She also managed the family farm on Scio Church Road.

She is survived by several cousins.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea. The Rev. Doris Sparks officiated. Burial followed at Mount Hope cemetery in Freedom Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan.

CLIFFORD BOYER

Dexter

Clifford Boyer, 96, of Dexter died Feb. 14, 2005.

Mr. Boyer worked on many farms in the Ann Arbor and Dexter area for 55 years. He also worked as a groundskeeper at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dexter for 29 years.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel in Dexter, with a funeral service at 1 p.m. The Rev. Brendan Walsh will officiate. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn cemetery in Dexter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dexter Senior Center, St. Joseph Church or Arbor Hospice.

HENRY O. KUEHLING JR.

Fowlerville

Henry O. Kuehling Jr., 64, of Fowlerville died Feb. 13, 2005.

Mr. Kuehling was a teacher at Dexter schools, retiring in 1998.

Surviving are his wife, Kay; two sons, David and Mark; two daughters, Kristine and Jennifer; seven grandchildren; two sisters; and one brother.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Place of Refuge Church in Fowlerville.

Arrangements were by Niblack Funeral Home in Fowlerville.

JOHN W. GILLESPIE

Chelsea

John W. Gillespie, 76, of Chelsea died unexpectedly Nov. 19, 2005, at Chelsea Community Hospital. He was born Feb. 9, 1929, in Flint the son of Clifton Clay and Carolyn N. (Dennington) Gillespie.

Mr. Gillespie had lived in the Chelsea and Dexter area since 1969, and was an entrepreneur and engineer. In 1963, with his brother Donald, he co-founded Jodon Engineering Associates and he was still involved with the business at the time of his death.

Mr. Gillespie was very active in Boy Scout Troop 477 of Dexter for 31 years, and had been assistant Scoutmaster and served as troop committee chairman.

He also was a veteran of World War II, serving the U.S. Army Air Force. He was an avid pilot and loved to fly. He was flying a "Swift" and was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association of Ann Arbor.

In addition, he loved spending time at Higgins Lake and windsurfing.

Mr. Gillespie was a proud graduate of Michigan State University, class of 1952. He was also a former member of the Dexter Township Planning Commission.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia E. (Griffith), whom he married Aug. 23, 1952, in Detroit. Also surviving are his son, Michael J. (Cindy) Gillespie of Chelsea; four grandchildren, Christina (Mark) Motsinger, Jessica Gillespie, Timothy Gillespie and Matthew A. Krakowiak; five great-grandchildren, Felecia, Matthew, Brittney, Cynthia and Samantha; three brothers Clifton Clay "Jack" (Lee) Gillespie of Three Rivers, George R. (Mary Lou) Gillespie of Chocktaw, Okla., and Donald E. Gillespie of Ann Arbor; and his sister, Mary Beth (Dennis) Wrubel of Canton.

Mr. Gillespie was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Timothy Clay Gillespie, in 1979; and a granddaughter, Shawna M. Krakowiak on Aug. 10, 2004.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Nov. 23 at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea. The Rev. Dale Grimm of Our Savior Lutheran Church will officiate.

Burial will be in the North Lake cemetery in Dexter Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to the John and Timothy Gillespie Memorial Fund, a Boy Scout summer camp fund for those boys who show an exceptional scouting spirit.

RICHARD A. "RICK" BENTLEY

Martin, Ky.

Formerly of Jackson

Richard A. "Rick" Bentley, 52, of Martin, Ky., formerly of Jackson, died Nov. 15, 2005, at his residence. He was born Oct. 16, 1953, in Jackson the son of Dorothy Jarrell Bentley of Martin, Ky., and the late Delmar Bentley.

Mr. Bentley was an office manager for Jim Hamer Lumber Co. in Water Gap, Ky.; a member of the Rising Son Ministries in Allen, Ky.; and a former member of The Kentucky Opry, The Full House Band and a member of The Traditions Band.

He is survived by his mother, Dorothy; one son, Richard Bryan Bentley of Lake Worth, Fla.; two brothers, Michael Bentley of Pikeville, Ky., and Larry Bentley of Sweetser, Ind.; and one grandchild, Lillian Bentley.

A funeral was held Nov. 19 at the Hall Funeral Chapel in Martin, Ky. Burial followed in the Davidson Memorial Gardens in Ivel, Ky.

HERMAN L. TANNER

Pinckney

Herman L. Tanner, 87, of Pinckney died at his home Nov. 9, 2005. He was born Aug. 5, 1918, the son of Leroy and Eva (Blackman) Tanner in Harrisburg, Ill.

Mr. Tanner married Margaret Smith, and she preceded him in death in October 1976.

Mr. Tanner enjoyed the art of photography, with fall being his favorite season. He also enjoyed computers, Boy Scouts and animals, especially horses and dogs.

He is survived by his children Nancy (Tim) Williams of Foresthill, Calif., Laurie (Jim) Godsey of Hampton, Va., and Pat (Alicia) Tanner of Dexter.

Also surviving are his five grandchildren, Casey Morrison, Nicole Godsey, Daniel Tanner, Cheyenne Tanner and Paige Tanner.

Mr. Tanner also was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Tanner, and his brothers and sisters.

A funeral was held Tuesday at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea. The Rev. Winfred French officiated. Burial was at St. Mary's cemetery in Pinckney.

Memorial contributions may be made to Great Lakes Hospice.

ARTHUR SCHERDT

Ann Arbor

Arthur Scherdt, 81, of Ann Arbor died Nov. 6, 2005. He was born Nov. 6, 1924, in Ann Arbor the son of Otto and Anna (Rosentreter) Scherdt.

Mr. Scherdt served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a union carpenter until his retirement in 1986.

Mr. Scherdt was a member or the Dexter American Legion and the Ann Arbor Moose Lodge 1253.

He is survived by his wife, Charlene; children, Arthur "Bud" Scherdt Jr., James Scherdt, Randy Scherdt, Judy (Dave) Pherson, Dennis (Marylee) Scherdt, Jeff Scherdt and Robert (Billie) Scherdt; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and two sisters, Virginia Danner and Betty (Bob) Schultz.

Mr. Scherdt was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Neil; son, Ronald; and daughter-in-law, Carol Scherdt.

A funeral was held Nov. 9 at Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel in Dexter. Cremation followed the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

ERMA (DETTLING) BERTKE FRERICHS

Lake Havasu, Ariz.

Formerly of Freedom Twp.

Erma Bertha (Dettling) Bertke Frerichs was born Feb. 8, 1915, in Freedom Township and died Oct. 24, 2005, at her home in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. She was the daughter of Otto and Laura (Schettler) Dettling.

After the age of 3, she was raised in Chelsea by her grandmother, Christina Barbara (Hinderer) Schettler, when her parents died. She was married to Roy Scott Bertke from 1934 to 1965 and to Carl Leonard Frerichs from 1973 10 1992. Both are now deceased.

Mrs. Frerichs graduated from Chelsea High School in 1932. She was employed by the Chelsea School District as secretary to the principal of South Elementary School and also the principal of Chelsea High School until moving to Tucson, Ariz., where she was employed by the Flowing Wells School District as manager of the high school bookstore.

Mrs. Frerichs lived in Chelsea until 1963, when she moved to Tucson, Ariz. She lived in Pine Top, Ariz., until 1983, when she moved to Lake Havasu City, Ariz., until her death.

She was a former member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Chelsea, Rincon Congregational Church in Tucson, Ariz., Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lakeside, Ariz., and most currently was a member of Our Saviour Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

Mrs. Frerichs enjoyed her many church activities and committees on which she served so faithfully. Her former and most current church families were very important to her. Her prayer life was very important to her and she touched many with the examples she set.

She enjoyed being able to attend family reunions in both Michigan and Nevada, and always looked forward to spending time with her family.

Mrs. Frerichs is survived by a son, David (Phyllis) Bertke of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Barbara (Carl) Byrum of Jackson and Marcia Westerbeke of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; and grandchildren Heather Bertke of Ann Arbor, Jeffrey Trolz of Jackson, Angela Trolz of Jackson, Terry (Tonya) Tolz of Lake City, Adriana (Brandon) Montoya of San Diego, Christina Westerbeke of Lake Havasu City, Scott Blonston of Charlotte, N.C., and Nancy (Mark) Goodman of Lakewood, Colo.

She is also survived by great-grandchildren Lauren Trolz and Nicholas Trolz of Lake City and Gabriel Goodman and Jordan Goodman of Lakewood, Colo., as well as many nieces and nephews of many generations spread from coast to coast.

She is also survived by stepsons Dean Frerichs of New York and Gary Frerichs of California, as well as several stepchildren.

She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.

A celebration of her life will be held Aug. 12, 2006, at St. John's United Church of Christ, 801 S. Mechanic St., in Jackson, and burial will be at Mount Hope cemetery in Freedom Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice; Our Saviour Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 3163 Maricopa Ave., Lake Havasu City, AZ; St. John's Memorial Fund, 801 S. Mechanic St., Jackson, MI; or Unitarian Universalist Church of Charlotte, 234 N. Sharon Amity Road, Charlotte, NC 28211.

Arrangements were entrusted to Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home & Crematory.
