Paul Blazier
Iron Mountain--Paul W. Blazier, 57, of W8104 Old M-69, Randville, died Wednesday, October 30, 2002 at his home. Paul was born July 16, 1945 in Iron Mountain son of the late Norman and Kathryn (Cowling) Blazier. He graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1963. Paul enlisted in the U.S. Airforce and served in Vietnam. He spent most of his service time at Dyess Airforce Base in Texas and retired as a Master Sergeant after serving 23 years. Paul moved back to the area in 1981 and worked as a custodian for the Randville Community Center and as a cook at the Randville Bar and Grill. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Paul is survived by a son, James (Melissa) Blazier of Austin, TX; a daughter, Sharon (Nick) Terrill of Austin, TX; three brothers, Murrill (Betty) Blazier of Bryant Pond, Maine, Harold (Sherry) Blazier of Bellaire, MI and Samuel (Dianne) Blazier of Crystal Falls, MI; two sisters, Karen (Garrit) Hughes of Crystal Falls and Lillian (Duane) Perron of Iron Mountain; five grandchildren, Milady and William Blazier and Cassandra, Tracey and Laura Terrill; two aunts, Verona Olson and Viola Blazier both of Randville, and many nieces and nephews. Paul was preceded in death by one brother, Duane Blazier.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2002 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 3:00pm on Sunday at the funeral home. Deacon Bernard Kut of Guardian Angel Church in Crystal Falls, will officiate. Burial will be in Channing cemetery.
Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

Roland 'Pete' Peterson
IRON MOUNTAIN - Roland 'Pete' Peterson, 92, of 1820 Mary's Way, Kingsford, formerly of Iron Mountain, died Tuesday, Ocotber 29, 2002 at Evergreen Apartments. Roland was born April 16, 1910 in Crystal Falls, MI, son of the late Anders and Lenore (Chadbourne) Peterson.
Roland graduated from Alpha High School in 1927. He then attended Ferris Institute and Michigan Technological University. Roland married the former Viola Beck on October 10, 1940 in Iron River. She preceded him in death in 1997. They moved to the area in 1959, coming from Stambaugh, MI. Roland was an accounting supervisor for the M.A. Hanna Co. He retired on January 31, 1974 after 30 years of work.
Roland was a member of First Lutheran Church, former member of Iron River Masonic Lodge, past secretary of the Iron River Masonic Temple Association, former member of the Board of Governors for the Chippewa Club, former member of the Iron River Engineers Club, past secretary of First Lutheran Church Council, and former member of Pine Grove Country Club. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, and was an avid Packer fan.
Roland is survived by a son, David R. (Michelle) Peterson of Springfield, VA; a daughter Dr. Patti L. Peterson of Iron Mountain; four grandchildren, Kyra and Trisha Peterson and Patrick and Philip Holliday, and a great granddaughter, Annabelle Holliday. He was preceded in death by four brothers; Randolph, Vernon, Virgil, and Clyde Peterson.
Visitation will be on Friday, November 1, from 11am to 1 pm at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be at 1 pm at the funeral home. Rev. Peter Jonas will officiate. Burial will be in cemetery Park.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

Phillip Skibo
CRYSTAL FALLS - Phillip (Phil) M. Skibo, 76, of Crystal Falls, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Phil was preceded in death by his wife, Pat Skibo and his brother, Cashmire and Stanley Skibo.
He leaves five children, Dennis (Pam) Skibo, June (Tony) Aaroe, Jean (Rick) Kuszmar, Tricia (Gary) Cahee and Bucky (Sheila) Skibo; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dolores (Frank) Hoholek and Tillie Swanson; and a brother, Walter (Bea) Skibo.
Phillip will be remembered by his loved ones as a big man with a big heart and respected around the world for his expertise in tunnel and dam construction.
The essence of Phil was about a man with an undaunted caring and love of his children, a soft heart (he often offered his time and effort to help others and do so without recognition), a great sense of humor and an appreciation for the simple pleasures of life like nature, travel, golf, cribbage, friends and family. These characteristics and more will represent part of the legacy he left that lives on in his children and their children.
We love you Dad and will miss you dearly.
Private family graveside services will be held in the Evergreen cemetery following cremation.
The Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Rudolph Steiner
IRON MOUNTAIN - Rudolph J. Steiner, 89, a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at Freeman's Convalescent Home in Kingsford.
Rudy Sr. was born Feb. 26, 1913, in Iron Mountain. He married the former Julia Merhalski on June 30, 1934, in Florence, Wis. She preceded him in death in July 1988 after 54 years of marriage.
Rudy Sr. was a retired Ford plant employee and self-employed carpenter.
He is survived by three son, Gary (Nancy) Steiner, Ron (Jayne) Steiner and Rudy Jr. (Deborah) Steiner; a sister, Elizabeth Menza of Iron Mountain. Rudy was the proud grandfather of eight and great-grandfather of 15.
The family would like to thank Freeman's Convalescent Home for their kind and considerate care of Rudy.
Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. A rosary service will be at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. The women of St. Mary and St. Joseph Parish will lead the rosary. Private burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

James Johnson
IRON MOUNTAIN - James M. Johnson, 48, of 521 Lyman St., Kingsford, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at his home.
He was born Aug. 27, 1954, in Burlington, Wis., the son of Ronald and Barbara (DuFresne) Johnson.
Jim was raised in this area and attended Iron Mountain High School. He spent from 1984 until April of this year in the Chicago area where he worked in the restaurant business, and most recently, in the home refinance field.
Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and was a gourmet cook. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jessica Johnson in 1977.
He is survived by his son, James (Angela) Johnson of Kingsford; two daughters, Heather (Todd) Schoen of Kingsford and Amanda Johnson of Chicago; his father, Ronald (Lola) Johnson of Kingsford and his mother, Barbara (Lloyd) Tharp of Stephenson; brothers and sisters, Gene (Julie) Johnson of Stephenson, Cindy (Charles) Johnson of Norwich, Conn., Richard (Debbie) Goodreau of Norway, Daniel (Sue) Johnson of Iron Mountain, Darryl (Jen) Johnson of Iron Mountain and Douglas (Kris) Johnson of Kingsford; three grandchildren, Emily and Olivia Johnson and Lucus Schoen; many aunts, uncles, nieces and cousins.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. Pastor Lori Liverance will officiate.
Memorial services will be at noon Tuesday.
Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
A memorial will be established in his memory.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Ernest L. Swartout
IRON MOUNTAIN - Ernest Swartout, 81, of Iron Mountain, died Wednesday, October 23, 2002 at Hyland Nursing Home. He was born October 26, 1920 in Brainerd, MN, son of the late Wesley and Gina (Pederson) Swartout.
Ernie married Lillian Johnson on July 5, 1942 in Brainerd, MN. They celebrated their 60th anniversary this past summer.
Ernie served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during WWII in Germany. He worked as a welder and blacksmith for the Hanna Mining Co. for 32 years, starting in Minnesota. Ernie moved to Michigan in 1963 and retired in 1977 due to a disability.
He was a former member of the American Legion Uren-Cooper-Johnson Post #50, was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of Iron Mountain Lodge #388 F&AM; and the Scottish Rite of Duluth and Hibbing, Minn. He also was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and had served on the church council. In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and leather craft. He loved reading. For many years Ernie and Lillian could be seen walking from the northside downtown to Kresge's for coffee. Bad weather was never an excuse for missing their daily walk.
Ernest is survived by his wife Lillian, four sons; Jerold (Connie) Swartout of Iron Mountain, Dr. Dennis Swartout of Keene, N.H., Larry (Joan) Swartout of Breitung Twsp., and Ronald Swartout of Iron River. A brother Herbert (Irene) Swartout of Virginia, MN. Four sisters; Elvera Johnson of Brainerd, MN., Gudrun Johnson of Brainerd, MN., Della (George) Shanks of Brainerd, MN., and Pearl Miller of Brainerd, MN. A sister-in-law, Harriett Swartout of Brainerd, MN. 10 grandchildren; Rob (Brenda) Swartout, Danny (Paula) Swartout, Michelle (Tom) Murray, Brad (Sarah), Timmy, Jordan, and Emily Swartout, Tom, Alex, and Andrew Swartout. 6 great grandchildren; Parker, Saylor, and Nate Swartout, Eric Deyeart, Megan Murray, and Simon Swartout. He was preceded in death by a son Michael Swartout, a grandson Trevor Swartout, 2 brothers John and Earl Swartout, and a sister Marcella (Bert) Albertson.
Visitation will be on Saturday, October 26, from 9:30 to 11:30 am at the Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be at 11:30 am at the church. Pastor Lori Liverance will officiate. Burial will be at cemetery Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.
Pall Bearers will be his grandsons; Robert, Daniel, Tom, Alex, and Andrew Swartout, Tom Murray, and Eric Deyeart.

Paula Swor
IRON MOUNTAIN - Paula Jo Swor, 58, of Iron Mountain died Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
She was born March 21, 1944, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Jack and Helen (George) Swor. She graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1962.
Paula had been a resident of the area her entire life.
She was a member of St. Mary's Orthodox Church in Iron Mountain.
Her family was her love and joy.
Paula is survived by two sisters, Barbara Marinelli of Iron Mountain and Rose (Melvin) Jayne of Iron Mountain; three nephews, Michael Jayne of Virginia Beach, Va., Thomas (Jill) Jayne of Gwinn and Jeffrey (Connie) Jayne and their three children, Kellin, Taylor and Marlow, all of Iron Mountain; a special aunt, Josephine George of Iron Mountain, and many cousins.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Orthodox Church in Iron Mountain. Fr. Mark Hagan will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established at St. Mary's Orthodox Church in memory of Paula.
Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Jayne, Thomas Jayne, Dennis George, Duane George, David George and James Sovey.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

Sylvia Buenting
NIAGARA, Wis. - Sylvia V. Buenting, 96, of Niagara died Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at Maryhill Manor Nursing Home in Niagara.
She was born Jan. 13, 1906, in Belle Plaine, Wis., daughter of the late Walter and Mathilda (Kolberg) Vorpahl.
She married Rev. Peter Buenting on Oct. 4, 1927, at St. Martin Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine, where she was baptized and confirmed.
Along with her husband, Sylvia worked and served for 50 years in parishes in the Green Bay, Milwaukee, Fond du Lac and Appleton areas. Together they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 4, 1977. He preceded her in death in March of 1980.
Sylvia was a member of First Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain. She loved working in the churches, especially arranging the flowers.
She also enjoyed reading and traveling and being a caregiver.
Sylvia is survived by two sons, Rev. Harold (Patricia) Buenting of Toledo, Ohio, and Rev. Howard (Robert) Buenting of Shawano, Wis.; two daughters, Doloris Ruechel of Niagara, Wis., and Marilyn (Eugene) Becker of Niagara; 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Norman and Harvey Vorpahl; a sister, Loraine Vorpahl, and a son-in-law, Ralph Ruechel.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Rev. Peter Jonas and Rev. Howard Buenting will officiate.
Burial will be at Highland Memorial Park in Appleton, Wis. There will be a service at 3 p.m. at Highland Memorial Park in the chapel.
The family of Sylvia Buenting would like to thank the staff at Maryhill Manor for their love and care of their mother.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.
