Bertha Douglas

Bertha Douglas 87 of Flint and formerly of Port Huron, passed away Thursday, May 24, 2007 in Genesys Hospital, Grand Blanc. She was born to George and Flora Yager on November 20, 1919 in Port Huron.

Bertha was a bus driver for the Carsonville-Port Sanilac Schools in the 1970s. She loved doll making and china painting.

She is survived by her five children, Geri Krohn of Leander, TX, Virginia (Jerry) Carpenter of Genessee, Sandra (Bill) Mollon of Tracy, CA, Colin (Melinda) Douglas Jr. of Woodway, TX, and Julia Douglas of Flint; seventeen grandchildren; six great grandchildren; her sister, Mildred Porrett of Port Huron; several nieces & nephews, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, Robert Walker and Colin Douglas Sr., one son, and four siblings.

Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Smith Family Funeral Home-South, 1230 Seventh St. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2007 in the funeral home followed by burial in Caswell cemetery.

Special thanks goes to Dr. Dipinio, Dr. K. Reddy, staff & physicians at Genesys Hospital, and TLC staffing nurses, Tracy Kehoe, Barb Baker, and Cindy Johnson.

She will be loved forever and missed for the rest of our lives.

Frances Young

Frances M. Mathews Murray Young, age 59 of Port Huron died Friday, May 11, 2007 in the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center after a short illness. She was born April 12, 1948 in Port Huron and was a life long resident. Frances enjoyed playing Bingo, and especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her 6 children, Donald R. (Lita) Murray Jr. of Lexington, Robert G. Murray of Lexington, Pamela K. (Tom) Green of Clyde, Annie M. Murray of Burtchville, Steven R. (Angie) Young of Port Huron, and Dawn M. (Kim) Augustson of Port Huron, 17 grandchildren, 5 brothers, Ken (Eunice) Mathews, James Ervin Mathews Jr., Gary Mathews, Jesse Mathews, and Dennis (Pam) Mathews, a sister, Joanne Mathews, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Annie Mathews, a sister, Donna Mathews, and a grandson, Michael Ray Bowser. There will be a funeral service held at 11 AM Wednesday in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North, 1525 Hancock Street with The Rev. Matt McPhillips of Court Street Baptist Church officiating. A graveside committal service will follow in Mt. Pleasant cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society.

Alvin Moore

Alvin W. 'Sonny' Moore, 71 of Wales Twp., passed away Monday, May 21, 2007 in Autumnwood of Deckerville following a long illness. He was born to Alvin and Dorothy Moore on April 18, 1935 in Port Huron and attended Marysville High School. He joined the U.S. Air Force and received his high school diploma in Trenton, NJ while in the service. He served in Vietnam and retired from the Air Force in 1974 after 20 years. He later worked many years for Acheson Industries.

Sonny was known as 'Mr. Fix-it' as his hobby was fixing anything. He spent quality time with his children, his grandchildren, and other family members. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and hunting. He especially loved to go to the hunting camp with his family and friends.

Sonny married Marilene Kippen on February 20, 1956 in Orange, TX. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marilene A. Moore; his two sons, William Todd (Susan) Moore of New London, WI and Brian (Deanna) Moore of Clio; eight grandchildren, Naomi (Joseph) Brickey, Rick (Erika Campbell) Gray, Negaunee Gray, Cassie (Adam) Wilson, Mikel Moore, Christina Moore, Carissa Moore, & Harrison Hunter Moore; five great grandchildren, Jerome, Mandy, Dakotha, Issabelle, & Elijah; two special great grandchildren, Joseph and Gabriel; one sister, Carolyn Basnaw of Port Huron; and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Bonnie Gray, a sister, Mary Kikendahl, and his in-laws, Adrian and Irene Kippen.

A service in Sonny's memory will take place at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 26, 2007 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. Elder Eldon Preston I and Priest Eldon Preston II will officiate and the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council will provide military honors. Visitation will be 1 - hours prior to the service.

Contributions may be made in Sonny's memory to Fargo Community of Christ Church.

Helen Schwitzke

Helen Schwitzke, 85 of Delray Beach, FL and formerly of Port Huron, passed away Monday, May 21, 2007 in Hospice by the Sea, Boca Raton, FL.

She was born to Stanley and Mary Rogos on October 15, 1921 in Croswell, attended the Croswell schools, and graduated from Memphis High School. After her marriage to Donald W. Schwitzke on Nov. 16, 1946, Helen worked for the American Red Cross. She and Donald adopted two children, Cynthia, born January 11, 1958, and David, born January 11, 1961. She then attended nursing school, became a registered nurse, and worked at Mercy Hospital until her retirement.

Helen was a long-time, active member of St. Mary Catholic Church before moving to Florida. She frequently took communion to and visited with the parish shut-ins. She enjoyed gardening and playing cards with her friends.

She is survived by her husband, Donald W. Schwitzke and her son, David (Melissa) Schwitzke, both of Delray Beach, FL, her sister, Josephine Brzozowski of Redford, and several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Cynthia Schwitzke, her parents, her five brothers, Walter, Baby Stanley, Tony, John, & Alex Rogos, and a niece, Alicia Rogos.

The funeral mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2007 in St. Mary Catholic Church. The Rev. Fr. Simeon Iber will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope cemetery. Visitation will be in the church one hour prior to the mass.

Contributions may be made in Helen's memory to St. Mary Catholic Church or Hospice by the Sea, Boca Raton. Smith Family Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Deanna Loehnis

Deanna Loehnis, 65, died Wednesday, May 16, 2007 in the University of Michigan Hospital following a short illness.

She was born July 3, 1941 in Mt. Clemens. She has lived here for the past 30 years.

Deanna was a devoted and loving wife who loved spending time with her family and watching her grandchildren play sports. She loved working in the garden and on jig-saw puzzles.

Deanna is survived by her husband, Edward Loehnis of Avoca; daughter, Suzanne (Bob) Donaldson of Kimball; grandchildren, Brianne and Shane; sisters, Helen (Ray) DeCosta, Joyce (Cyril) Voit and Bonnie (Rex) Fredline and brothers, Alvin (Adeline) Martin and Daryl (Margie) Martin.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. The Rev. Richard George of Blue Water Free Methodost Church will officiate.

Visiting hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday (5/17) at the funeral home.

Martha Bernard

Martha Rose (Netter) Bernard, 91, passed to her heavenly home surrounded by her family on June 23, 2007. She was born in Port Huron, Michigan on August 2, 1915 to William and Elizabeth Netter. She is the youngest of seven children, Agnes Reckker, Cecil Netter, Ethel Powers, Delton Netter, William Bernard Netter, and Beatrice Frumveller, and is survived by William Bernard. She graduated from St. Stephen High School in 1934.

Martha and Floyd Anthony Bernard were married at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Port Huron, where both were life-long members, on January 2, 1943. Floyd was City Editor and Editorial Page Editor at the Port Huron Times Herald before retiring, and entered his heavenly home on February 1, 1994.

They are both survived by their 4 children and their families: Barbara Bernard Butler (son-in-law Jack passed February 20, 2005) of Ann Arbor; Anne Marie (Michael) Davich of Haslett; Ruth (James) Galloway of Ann Arbor; Joe (Kathy) Bernard of Marysville; 5 grandchildren and their families: Andrea (William) Schroeder; David (Emily) Davich; Julia Bernard (fiancé Timothy Tyrrell); Steven Davich; Holly Bernard (fiancé Matthew Thibert); great-grandchild, Ella Rose Tyrrell and baby boy Schroeder not yet born.

The two centers of Martha's life were family and faith. Her devotion and pride in her immediate and extended family was sensed across the generations. Their home always had an open door, a comfortable living room to visit in, and a bed for out-of-town guests. She was a life-long member of St. Joseph's Parish, and an active member of the Christian Mothers for decades. Her many rosaries were in daily use, some of which were made by Floyd.

Martha had worked at Chrysler's and at Mercy Hospital; Martha also served for many years as a volunteer at Mercy Hospital.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. Stephen C. Reckker, Pastor of St. Clement Parish, Romeo will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Visiting hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home and 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening.

Memorials may be sent in her name to St. Johns Hospice, St. Joseph's Parish or to the Mercy Hospital Foundation.

James Temple

James L. Temple, 72 of Port Huron, passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2005 in his residence following a long illness. He was born to James and Marie Temple on December 14, 1932 in Port Huron, attended the Port Huron schools, and graduated from Port Huron High School in January of 1952 as Class President. On May 25, 1957 he married Roberta A. Nofs.

Jim was employed at Farmer Jack's for 27 years retiring in 1994. He loved tennis, hockey, and years ago was a hockey coach in the Port Huron Minor Hockey Association for Thompson Cain Meats in the squirt division.

Jim especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Roberta A. Temple; his four children, Leroy J. (Pam) Temple and his children, Adam and Trevor Temple all of Columbus, OH, Dennis James (Rhonda Smith) Temple of Port Huron, Gary A. (Tina) Temple and his children, Danielle, Christopher, & Ryan Temple all of Port Huron, and Karen M. (Ron) Morris and their children, Ashley & Ronald Morris, all of Tucson, AZ; three step grandchildren, Shae Adams of Columbus, OH and Jessica & Kyle Fead of Port Huron; his sister Betty (Bill) Parker of Port Huron; and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Harriet Thomas.

Cremation has taken place. A service in Jim's memory will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 13, 2005 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. Contributions may be made in his memory to St. John's Hospice or the Port Huron Silver Stick Hockey Tournament Scholarship Fund.

Mary Lou Harris

Mary Lou Harris, 51 of Port Huron, passed away Friday, August 5, 2005 in Port Huron Hospital. She was born on June 28, 1954 in Port Huron, graduated from Port Huron High School, and then graduated from St. Clair County Community College.

Mary Lou's nursing career included 17 years at Port Huron Hospital where she was currently an LPNII on 6 east and previously at Mercy Hospital. She continued working to receive her RN degree and volunteered for Heartlink and the American Heart Association.

She enjoyed decorating cakes, drawing, and spending time with her family.

Mary Lou was a superb mom and grandma having raised two fine sons and was especially fond of her two grandsons and spent many happy hours playing with them.

She is survived by her two sons, Jeffrey A. (Toni) Harris Jr. of Clyde and Jamie M. Harris of Port Huron and her two grandsons Noah & Cameron Harris. She was an awesome sister & friend to and will always be remembered by her sisters & brother, Darlene (Terry) Weir of Lakeport, Valerie (Whip) Lycklama of Burlington, Ont., Clifford 'Jim' Radatz of St. Clair, and Kimberley L. Radatz of Port Huron; several nieces & nephews including a special nephew, Timothy Radatz; and several great nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Rita Radatz and a nephew, Scott Weir.

The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 9, 2005 in Smith Family Funeral Home-South, 1230 Seventh St. Pastor Stanley Liechty of Colonial Woods Missionary Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Woodland cemetery. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Monday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Tuesday beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Contributions may be made to Mary Lou's family.

Irene Bleau

Irene Eleanor Bleau, age 92, died Saturday, October 6, 2007 in Maewood Nursing & Rehab.

She was born January 2, 1915 in Port Huron to the late John and Regina (Ganhs) Lewandowski.

Irene married George J. Bleau on October 24, 1936 in Port Huron. He preceded her in death on March 27, 1996.

She was a past employee of Ullenbruch's Flower and Gifts for over 40 years. Irene was a member of St. Mary's Church and enjoyed reading and playing cards. She especially loved her great-granddaughters.

She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn (William) Cluney of Fort Gratiot; granddaughters, Cheryl (Michael) Berels of Fort Gratiot and Sheila (Raymond) Randall of Marysville; and great-granddaughters, Katie and Christina Berels and Emma Ray Randall.

Cremation will take place. Inurnment will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Memorials in memory of Irene, may be given to St. Mary's Capital Campaign.

Robert Vining

Robert E. Vining, 81 of Port Huron, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes in his residence on Monday, October 08, 2007. He was born to Donovan and Iva Vining on July 24, 1926 in Detroit and grew up in the Marlette area.

Bob served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and on February 22, 1947, he married Betty Fogal. Years ago he worked as a policeman in the Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti area before graduating from Detroit Barber College. He was a barber for many years in Port Huron and also worked as a photographer specializing in wedding photography. He and his wife owned and operated the Baskin Robbins ice cream franchise on Stone Street for nearly 20 years. His hobbies included deer hunting, bow fishing, gardening, and lately, bee keeping.

Bob is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty L. Vining; two daughters, Sue Ann (Gary) Pace of Rochester and Debbie Ann (Bruce) Macomber of Port Huron; six grandchildren, Nathan (Ami Lehman) Pace and Tambreth (Doug Fredricks) Pace, both of Rochester, Amie (Josh Holley) Aaron of Port Huron, Jamie (Dave) Connell of Avoca, and Lindsay Aaron & Robert Aaron, both of Port Huron; three great grandchildren, Ethan Robert & Lillian Michelle Lehman-Pace, and Lotus Marie Aaron; a sister, Dorris (Lee) Galloway of Snover; a brother, Ronald (Leona) Vining of Richmond, MI; and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Heather Aaron.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. The funeral service will be on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home with visitation one hour prior. The St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council will provide military honors.

Bob's grandchildren will serve as his pallbearers. Contributions may be made in his memory to his family.

Douglas Treadgold

Douglas Webb Treadgold, age 72, of Port Huron, died Sunday, September 23, 2007 in Port Huron Hospital after a long illness. He was born October 22, 1934 in Port Huron and lived here most of his life.

He was a graduate of Port Huron High School. Doug was a member of Port Huron Yacht Club where he was known as "Uncle Doug". He enjoyed racing his yacht, Motivator, and had raced in numerous Port Huron to Mackinac sailboat races. He also had a great passion for teaching children to sail. He served in the U.S. Navy. He owned Treadgold Custom Building, and built many custom homes in the Port Huron area. He was also an avid antique tool collector.

He is survived by his sister, Victoria "Vickie" Bowers of Marysville; a niece, Lisa (Bill) Shagene of Fort Gratiot; two nephews, Douglas (Karyl) Bowers of Marysville, and John (Betty) Bowers of North Street; 11 great-nieces and nephews; 4 grandnieces and nephews; cousins; Mike (Joyce) French of Torrance, California, Allen (Fran) French of St. Clair, and Pam (Rob) Carson of Fort Gratiot; dear friends, Matt and Laura Troy of Port Huron, Terry Troy of Port Huron; and his special girls, Michelle and Melanie Troy of Port Huron. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. George Douglas Treadgold and Ernestine Webb Treadgold.

A celebration of Uncle Doug's life will be held at Port Huron Yacht Club, 1 p.m. November 24, 2007 for family and friends. Casual attire is preferred.

Memorials may be made to the Port Huron Yacht Club's youth sailing program.

Scott Tipa

Scott M. Tipa, 53 of Ypsilanti, passed away Saturday, August 18, 2007 in University of Michigan Hospital following an extended illness. He was born to George and Elaine Tipa on April 22, 1954 in Port Huron, graduated from Port Huron High School in 1972 where he played football, and graduated from University of Michigan in 1976 with a degree in business administration. He and his wife, Dianne, were married Dec. 17, 1988.

Scott first worked for Mueller Brass Co. in Port Huron and then in Washington State. He worked 14 years for Comshare, Inc. in Ann Arbor and most recently worked for NSK Corp. in Ann Arbor. He was a member of the National Assoc. of Credit Managers having earned his Certified Credit Executive title.

Scott enjoyed golf, softball, pheasant & deer hunting, and camping. He was a huge U. of M. football fan and was a member of the U. of M. Alumni Assoc. He also belonged to various Elks lodges, Fort Gratiot #374 F & AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Detroit and the Moslem Shriners of Detroit.

He is survived by his wife, Dianne M. Tipa; two children, Nathan Looze and Kelsey Tipa, both of Ypsilanti; his mother, Elaine E. Tipa of Port Huron; two sisters, Denise L. (Ronald) Corby of North Street and Bonny R. (Bryan) Wolff of Kimball; two uncles, Michael (Helen) Tipa of Alexandria, VA and Daniel (Laura) Tipa of Marysville; and four nieces & nephews, Brandon & Korene Corby and Britney & Garrett Wolff. He was preceded in death by his father, George Tipa and a sister, Marianne Tipa.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007 in Smith Family Funeral Home-South, 1230 Seventh St. from 2-4 & 6-8. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home with visitation one hour prior t o the service. Pastor Robert Trask will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakeside cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Nathan Looze, Brandon & Ron Corby, and Bryan & Garrett Wolff. Contributions may be made in Scott's memory to American Heart Association or Blue Water Area Humane Society.

Harvey Stewart

Harvey Bernard Stewart, 49, of Port Huron passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 19, 2007 in Port Huron Township.

He was born August 6, 1958 in Port Huron to Maggie Dell Stewart, and the late Walter Brown. Harvey was a graduate of Port Huron Central. Upon completion, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served 6 years from 1976 to 1982. He also spent many years volunteering at the Port Huron Armory.

Harvey is survived by his mother; Maggie Dell Stewart; a daughter, Janae Christine Robinson; 5 brothers, Warren, David, Mark, Carlos, and Douglas (Lathis) Stewart, all of Port Huron; and 3 sisters, Christine Norman, Shirley Moore of Port Huron, and Darlene (Robert) Reardon of Clinton Twp.; along with 15 nieces and nephews. Harvey was preceded in death by his father, Walter Brown, and a sister Talene Stewart.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 26 at the Great Commission Church, 2524 Vanness Street, Port Huron with The Rev. Allen White officiating. Burial will follow in Great Lakes National cemetery in Holly, Michigan. Smith Family Funeral Home - North is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Spring

Helen E. Spring, 91 of Fort Gratiot, passed away Sunday, August 26, 2007 in Regency on the Lake. She was born to Morris and Amanda Temple on April 10, 1916 in Croswell, attended the Croswell schools, graduated from Croswell High School, and received her teacher's certificate from Central State Teacher's College. (now CMU)

On June 19, 1943, Helen married George W. Spring in Croswell. She taught 26 years in the Port Huron Area School District retiring in 1976. She was a longtime member of Hillside Wesleyan Church where she taught Sunday School for nearly 30 years. She enjoyed knitting and doing needle point.

Helen is survived by her husband of 64 years, George W. Spring; her son, Jack F. (Judith) Spring of Fenton; two grandchildren, Rev. Thad M. (Jerilynn) Spring of Marysville, and Heidi (Rev. Dennis) Cook of Port Huron; four grandchildren, Levi & Jacob Spring, and Mackenzie & Morgan Cook; and her nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Temple, and her sister, Wilma McQueen.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 29, 2007 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The funeral service will be on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in Hillside Wesleyan Church with visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. Retired Wesleyan pastor, Rev. William Kinnan, will officiate. Burial will follow in Croswell cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Helen's memory to Hillside Wesleyan Church.
