Marjorie J. Olson
October 3, 1920 -- November 10, 2009

Marjorie J. Olson, age 89, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 in her home after a long illness. Marge was born on Sunday, October 3, 1920 in Balaton, Minnesota, the daughter of Albert and Alma (Johnson) Knudson.
Marge was united in marriage with Robert Olson on February 7, 1943 in Balaton. They moved to Mt. Pleasant in 1953. Marge was retired from the Mt. Pleasant Public Schools after serving for twenty eight years as a speech therapist and audiologist. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant. Marge was a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. She and Robert served with the Peace Corp, and she volunteered with Easter Seals. Marge was known for wearing hats, which she enjoyed very much.
A memorial service in celebration of Marges life will be held on Saturday, November 21 at 11a.m. from the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant with Pastor John Boley officiating. A luncheon for family and friends will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall at the church. Interment of the cremated remains will take place at a later date on the family farm in Minnesota. Memorial contributions in Marges memory have been suggested to the United Methodist Churchs Red Bird Mission in Beverly, Kentucky. Envelopes are available at the Helms Funeral Home and on the day of the memorial service at the church.
Survivors include Marges son, Greg and his wife Joanne of Coto De Caza, California; grandchildren: Cecily Olson, Nick and his wife Alissa Olson, and Ashley Olson. Marge was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 1998, her daughter Shelley in 1995, both parents, and a brother in 1982.

Richard O. Higgs, Sr.
February 5, 1930 -- November 6, 2009

Richard O. Higgs, Sr., age 79, of Rosebush, Michigan passed away on Friday, November 6, 2009 at his home. Interment of the cremated remains will be in the Great Lakes National cemetery in Holly, Michigan at a later date. He was born on February 5, 1930 in Flint, Michigan the son of Roy and Hazel Steele Higgs. Richard married Marie Nichols on February 6, 1948 at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. He was a veteran of the US Army. Richard is survived by five children, Judy Dean of Mt. Morris, Richard Jr. of Alabama, Betty Hedel of Washington, Sandra Domerese of Rosebush, and Roy Higgs of Flint. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Bonnie J. Giese
January 5, 1934 November 3, 2009

Bonnie Jean Giese, age 75, of Montcalm County, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at her home. Bonnie was born on Friday, January 5, 1934 in Lakeview, Michigan, the daughter of Arnold and Gladys (Dougherty) Thren. On February 4, 1956, she married Elmer Giese in Remus, Michigan.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Bonnies life will be held at a later date. Interment of the cremated remains will take place in Broomfield Township cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions in Bonnies memory may be made to St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Remus, or to the American Cancer Society for research in melanoma cancer. Envelopes are available at the Helms Funeral Home, 330 S. University Avenue, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan 48858.
Bonnie spent most of her life in the Remus area. She was the owner and operator of Forget-Me-Not Floral and Bridal shop for thirty years. She was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church. Bonnie enjoyed traveling and camping, and for five years, she and Elmer were campground hosts at the park in Watersmeet, Michigan. They enjoyed traveling across the United States and also in Europe when Elmer was in the service. Besides enjoying square dancing, Bonnie was a very active quilter. She quilted quilts for all of her family, and many friends. She was known to put the sewing machine and her quilting materials in their travel trailer before she put in clothing and food when they were leaving on a trip.
Bonnie is survived by her husband of fifty three years, Elmer, a daughter Heidi and Larry Hunt of Remus, and son Timothy Giese of Remus, and a daughter-in-law, Julie Giese; four grandchildren: Cheyenne, Cherlene, Justin, and Andy. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents.

Helen Pauline Mason Bailey
July 7, 1920 -- October 14, 2009

Helen P. Bailey, age 89 of Portage passed away on Wednesday October 14, 2009 at her home. Helen was born on July 7, 1920 in Farrell, PA, the daughter of Robert and Mabel Wood Mason.
A celebration of Helens life will be held at the Oshtemo United Methodist Church on Sunday, November 1, 2009 at 3:00 PM with Pastor Suzanne Kornowski and Rev. Brenda Deily of Heartland Hospice officiating. The family will greet friends immediately before and after the services at the church. Interment of her remains will take place in the Memorial Garden at the Gaylord United Methodist Church at a later date. Memorial contributions are suggested to Heartland Hospice 8075 Creekside Drive, Ste. 120, Portage, MI 49024. Envelopes will be available at the memorial service.
On May 30, 1942, Helen married Rev. Lester C. Bailey in western Pennsylvania. Rev. Lester and Helen served the West Michigan Conference of the United Methodist Church in Grand Rapids, Portage, Battle Creek, Ionia, Cassopolis, White Pigeon, Charlotte, and Coldwater. She was a gifted artist and worked as a school bus driver in many of those locations. Helen was a member of the Oshtemo United Methodist Church. She was a person with a gentle heart and kind soul who loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchild.
Helen is survived by her children and their spouses, Linnea and Paul Oswald of Portage, Mercia and David Foster of Mt. Pleasant, Charles and Shanna Bailey of Grand Rapids, and Celeste and David Flood of Mattawan; seven grandchildren; and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two sisters, Sara Williams and Marjorie Leipheimer.

Austin Michael Kirby
September 23, 2009

Austin Michael Kirby, infant son of Crystal Gurthrie and Marc Kirby of Weidman, Michigan, passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2009. Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. from the Central Michigan Christian Church in Mt. Pleasant. Visitation was from 12 2 p.m. at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to the needs of the family. Austin is survived by his parents; his brothers and sisters, Cassandra Jane Kirby, Bianca Ann Kirby, Helen I. Dean, Skye J. Dean, Darthenion R. Dean, and Devan Marc Kirby; his grandparents, Robert and Linda Kirby of Weidman, Terry and Gloria Gutherie of Mt. Pleasant, and Mary Sawade of Remus; great grandparents, Ida Patten of Weidman, Homer and Eleene Guthrie, and Bonnie Pelcher of Mt. Pleasant; and several aunts an uncles.

Malamatie Sarakatsanis
August 10, 1931 -- September 20, 2009

Malamatie Molly Sarakatsanis, age 78, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2009 surrounded by her loved ones at her daughters home near Mt. Pleasant. Malle was born on Monday, August 10, 1931 in Korfoula-Kestorins, Greece, the daughter of Seaphim Marks and Chrysoula Gersios.
Funeral services for Molly were on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 11:00 am from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Fr. Irenaeus Cox of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church officiating. Interment followed the services at Riverside cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. Friends greeted the family at Helms Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 pm with Trisagion Prayers at 4:00 pm. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Lung Association or to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. Envelopes are available at Helms Funeral Home.
Molly was a resident of Mt. Pleasant since 1950. She was a member of St. Demetrois Greek Orthodox Church in Saginaw. She owned and operated the One Minute Lunch Coffee Shop for many years. She loved to baby sit her grandchildren and great grandchild. She was noted for her cooking, helping others, and was a very modest and very caring person.
Molly is survived by her children, Thomas A. Sarakatsanis of Cape Canaveral, Florida and Anastasia (Mark) Bristley of Mt. Pleasant; three grandchildren, Holli, Stephanie, and Nicole Bristley; a great grandchild, Alexandra Malamatie; two brothers, Ike (Afrodite) Marks of Swartz Creek, MI and Milton (Yiota) Marks of Greece; three sisters, Efrocine Anastasiou of Chicago, Sandra (James) Tolas of Mt. Pleasant, and Eva (Bill) Mourtzouhos of Mt. Pleasant; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Dimitroula Marks; special niece and nephew, Sam and Katerina Marks; and a great niece, Rebecca Georgakis.

Idonea, Dony Hersee
December 7, 1909 - September 14, 2009

Idonea Lewis Hersee, age 99, passed away Monday, September 14, 2009 at Gratiot Medical Center in Alma. Funeral services for Mrs. Hersee will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 18 at the Helms Funeral Home with Reverend John Boley, First United Methodist Church, officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Helms Funeral Home. Burial will take place in Riverside cemetery. Friends are invited to join the family at the Comfort Inn for lunch and sharing memories following the funeral. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to one of the following: Art Reach of Mid Michigan, Veterans Memorial Library of Mt. Pleasant, Central Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross, The Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation, the First United Methodist Church or the charity of their choice.
Dony was born on December 7, 1909 in Owosso, Michigan, the fourth child of Sara Elizabeth Cooper Lewis and Fred Cyrus Lewis. She graduated from Owosso High School in 1928. Dony attended Central State Teachers College in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, where she was a member of the Warriner Literary Society. She graduated with a teaching certificate on June 22, 1931 and taught Home Economics in Berkley, Michigan. On June 30, 1934, she married William E. Hersee, M. D. in Flint, Michigan. In 1935, she moved to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan with husband, where she spent most of her adult life.
Dony was a loving, supportive wife, Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, Cousin and friend. She especially enjoyed celebrating holidays and reunions with family and friends. Her door was always open and her welcome warm. Higgins Lake held a special place in her heart where many evenings were spent enjoying playing cards and good conversation. In recent years she enjoyed playing bridge with her friends at Maplewood of Mt. Pleasant. Dony was an enthusiastic supporter of Art Reach of Mid Michigan and in April 2006 was recognized as an Art Treasure. She was an avid reader and supporter of the library, as well as the Red Cross and the Community Foundation. She was an honorary member of the Mt. Pleasant Federated Garden Club.
Idonea is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Dennis Olson of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan; grandson, Mark Olson of Traverse City, Michigan; her niece, Nancy (Charles) Van Deusen of Northville, Michigan; nephews, William Lewis of Little Rock, Arkansas; Robert (Barbara) Lewis of San Francisco, California; Terris (Eileen) Lewis of Madison, Alabama and many loving cousins, great nieces and nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, William in 1989; her parents; two brothers, Robert Lewis and James Lewis; and a sister, Isabelle (Wilson) Smith. Family and friends will sorely miss Donys generous spirit, loving heart and welcoming embrace.

Keith Duane Gibson
December 9, 1933 -- September 9, 2009

Keith Duane Gibson, age 75, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at The Laurels of Mt. Pleasant. As per Keiths wishes, cremation has taken place and burial of his cremated remains took place at Oaklawn cemetery in Stockbridge, Michigan. Keith was born on Saturday, December 9, 1933 in Stockbridge, the son of Floyd and Ruth M. Force Gibson.

Mikayla Aliyah-Renee Rodriguez
October 2, 2008 -- September 7, 2009

Mikayla Aliyah-Renee Rodriguez, age 11 months, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Monday, September 7, 2009 at University of Michigan Hospitals in Ann Arbor. Funeral services were held on Friday, September 18, 2009 at 11:00 am at the Potter's House Family Worship Center in Mt. Pleasant with Yolanda Morales officiating. Mikayla was born on Thursday, October 2, 2008 in Ann Arbor, the daughter of George Luis Rodriguez and Pernella Aelea Griffin. Interment took place in Riverside cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Ronald McDonald House, 1600 Washington Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48109. Mikayla is survived by her parents, George and Pernella Griffin Rodriguez of Mt. Pleasant; grandparents, Lydia Estelle Rodriguez of Bronx, NY and Arthur Thomas Griffin, Jr. of Detroit, MI; aunts, Carmine Wood and Yolanda Morales; and two uncles, Jose Juan Rodriguez, Jr. and Arthur Thomas Griffin, III.

Robert J. Machuta
November 15, 1941 -- September 4, 2009

Robert J. Machuta, 67, of Shepherd, passed away on Friday, September 4, 2009 at Central Michigan Community Hospital as a result of a motorcycle deer accident. Robert was born on November 15, 1941 in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Elton E. and Ruth Louise Malley Machuta.
A celebration of Roberts life was held on Wednesday, September 9, at 11:00 AM from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Brian LaMew of the Mt. Pleasant Community Church officiating. Interment took place at Riverside cemetery following the services. Military honors were conducted at the graveside by the V.F.W. Post 3033 and the American Legion Post 110 of Mt. Pleasant. The family greeted friends on Tuesday, September 8, at Helms Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. Memorial contributions are suggested to Midland Family Center. Envelopes are available at Helms Funeral Home.
Robert served in the US Army from 1959 until 1962. On August 10, 1974, he and Beverly Dean were married in Mt. Pleasant. Beverly passed away in March of 1998. Robert was a former member of the Moose, a lifetime member of the NRA, and attended Mt. Pleasant Community Church. He was a bus driver for the Shepherd Schools for 10 years and owned and operated Salt River Gun Shop for over twenty years before retiring. Robert and Carole Robinson began their relationship in 1999 as close friends. They enjoyed riding motorcycles, going to Florida in the winter, and taking two mile walks to see their best friends, Jim and Dora Cooper.
Robert is survived by his significant other, Carole Robinson of Mt. Pleasant; his children, Craig and Cindi Machuta of Mt. Pleasant, Randy and Shelly Robinson of Shepherd, Richard and Theresa Robinson of Milford, and Greg and Nancy Robinson of Coloma; his mother, Ruth Crane of Orange, CA; grandchildren, William Machuta, Chrissy, Ronald, Amanda, Randi, Michael, Michelanne Robinson, and Melissa and Matt Nelson; three brothers, Larry and Mary Brooks Machuta of Shepherd, Mike and Patricia Machuta of Mt. Pleasant, and Greg and Denise Machuta of Clare; and three sisters, Patricia and Ed Lindquist of Montana, Nancy Ann Machuta of Mt. Pleasant, and Dianne and Bill Stauffer of Allegan. He was preceded in death by his father, Elton E. Machuta in 1973 and his wife, Beverly in 1998.

Edward Joseph Rohen
July 8, 1951-- August 12, 2009

Edward Joseph Rohen, age 58, of Shepherd, passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at Central Michigan Community Hospital in Mt. Pleasant. Edward was born on Sunday, July 8, 1951 in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Orval and Mary Brian Rohen.
Funeral services for Edward were held on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 11 am at the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. John Boley of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Following cremation, burial took place in Forest Hill cemetery in Evart, Michigan. The family gathered with friends on Friday, August 14, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at Helms Funeral Home. Memorial contributions were suggested to the American Legion
Edward was a lifetime resident of the area and worked in Automotive Parts Sales with Mt. Pleasant Automotive for 20 years. He enjoyed working and tinkering with cars.
Ed was survived by his two children, Edward J. Rohen of Lansing and Amy Rohen of Myrtle Beach, SC. Also surviving were two grandchildren, Christopher Rohen and Allison Kline, his father, Orval, of Mt. Pleasant, three sisters: Judy (Troy) Perkins, Kay (John) Tuttle, and Linda Potter, all of Mt. Pleasant, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary in 2005, and a brother, William in 1956.

Douglas R. Sims
November 24, 1947 -- August 4, 2009

Douglas Ray Sims, age 61, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on August 4, 2009 in Gladwin County. Douglas was born on November 24, 1947 in Corpus Christi, Texas, the son of James and Johnnie Brown Sims.
A celebration of Douglass life was held on Friday, August 7, 2009 at 1:00 PM from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. John Boley of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment took place in Riverside cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. The family greeted friends on Thursday, August 6, at Helms Funeral Home from 4 to 8 pm. Memorial contributions are suggested to the family.
On January 23, 1970, Douglas married Christine Hankins at the Free Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant. He was a resident of the area since 1976. Douglas was employed as a roustabout with Muskegon Development since 1976. He was a very big hunter, enjoyed fishing, bowling, and especially was a friend to all.
Douglas is survived by his wife, Christine of Mt. Pleasant; three sons, James Sims of Mt. Pleasant, Douglas C. and Saundra Sims of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Steven Sims of Mt. Pleasant; eleven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; five brothers, Richard Brown of Cuero, TX, Ronald and Debbie Hill of Joaquin, LA, Caleb and Paula Harvey, Jr. of Center, TX, Mark and Sandra Harvey of Center, TX, and Rodney Harvey; two sisters, Deborah Jones of Center, TX and Laurajo Harvey Knox of Cuero, TX; many nieces and nephews; and a best friend, Doug DeLong. He was preceded in death by his parents; step mom, Tommie Sims; and two uncles.

Deloris M. Rhode
March 28, 1933 -- July 19, 2009

Deloris Mae Rhode, age 76, of Oil City, Michigan, passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2009 at her home. Deloris was born on Tuesday, March 28, 1933 in Isabella County, the daughter of Edward Albert and Mildred Mae (Holliday) Sawade. On August 30, 1952, she married Ferdinand Harry Rhode in Shepherd. Ferdinand preceded her in death on June 14, 1999.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Pastor Jeremy Screws of the Oil City Assembly of God Church officiating. Following the funeral service, interment took place in Kelly cemetery, Oil City, beside her husband. The family gathered with friends on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Oil City Assembly of God Church to assist cancer patients. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Deloris was a lifetime area resident. She was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing, making crafts, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of the Oil City Assembly of God Church and the TOPS Club.
Survivors include her children: Roberta Foster of Shepherd, Carol and Russ Zilska of Harrison, Edward Rhode of Coleman, Larry and Nikki Rhode, Ron Rhode, Randy Rhode, and Joe Rhode all of Shepherd. Eleven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren; two brothers: George (Debbie) Sawade of Midland, and Jim Chalmers of Shepherd; three sisters: Irene (Leon) Burr of Shepherd, Janet (Robert) Knapp of Midland, and Brenda (Albert) Knapp of Midland. Deloris also had too many adopted children and great grandchildren to number as she was known as Grandma Rhode of Oil City. Deloris was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law Connie and great grandchildren, Luiken and Connor.
