Robert Kelly

Robert H. Kelly, age 83, of Cedarville, Michigan, passed away at Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace, Michigan early Saturday morning, November 16, 2002.

Bob was born in Pickford, Michigan on April 28, 1919. He was a lifelong resident of the Eastern Upper Peninsula, living in the Sault Ste. Marie and Stalwart before settling near Prentiss Bay in Cedarville in 1952. He was employed for a time for I.L. Whitehead Company building roads. He worked at the Limestone Quarry in Cedarville for nearly 30 years, retiring as a track foreman in 1984. From 1961 to 1974, he owned and operated Prentiss Bay Service, on M-134, a gas station/grocery store and excavating business.

Bob served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II in Italy and North Africa. He was a member of Les Cheneaux Sportsman's Club and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty J. (Crawford) whom he married December 15, 1945 in Sault Ste. Marie; four sons: Richard (Dana) Flynn of Hessel, Mich., Colin (Barbara) Kelly of Drummond Island and Mattawan, Mich., Michael (Diane) Kelly of Drummond Island, Mich. and Jake (Fay) Kelly of St. Ignace, Mich.; one daughter, Sandy (Allen) Tellinghuisen of Platts Mouth, Nebraska; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert H. Kelly and Barbara (Pierce) Kelly Ames; a daughter, Connie K. Kelly in 1992; a great-granddaughter Samantha Jane in 1997; brothers, Orville Kelly and Lloyd Kelly; and a sister, Etta House.

Services will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 19 at Reamer Funeral Home in Pickford with Reverend Robert and Imogene Schrader officiating. Friends may call from 5 p.m. until the time of service. Interment will be in Oaklawn Chapel Gardens cemetery.

Daryl McGill

Daryl C. McGill passed away at War Memorial Hospital on November 15, 2002.

He was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on May 10, 1937. Daryl was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved the outdoors and was an avid member of the N.R.A.

Mr. McGill is survived by his three sons: James (Shannon) McGill and Darin M. McGill of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. and Roger McGill of Fairbanks, Alaska; daughters Sharyl (Wally) Savenkoff of Cheboygan, Mich., Caryl (Dan) Densmore of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. and Debbie (Dan) Maleport of Sugar Island, Mich.; his brother Duane (Eleanor) McGill and his sister DeAnn (Harry) Lounds both of Sault Ste. Marie. Mr. McGill's grandchildren include: Mandy and Erin McGill, and Kyle and Jessica Maleport. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Daryl is preceded in death by his wives, Thelma, in July of 1992; and Kathleen in September of 2002.

Visitation for Mr. McGill will be held at Hovie Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 19 from 3-5 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 20 at Hovie Funeral Home with Pastor Kent Kramer officiating. Entombment will take place at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens.

Robert Juda Sr.

Robert "Bob" W. Juda, Sr., age 60, of Riverside Drive of Pickford, Michigan entered eternal peace with his Lord on Friday morning, November 15, 2002 at his home with loving family by his side after a battle with cancer.

He was born to the late Walter and Marjorie (Mordecki) Juda on March 29, 1942 in Detroit, Mich. He was raised in the Detroit area until 1961, when he enlisted in the United States Air Force. After his basic training he was transferred to North Concord Radar Base in St. Johnsbury, Vermont where he joined hands in marriage to Doris (Jo) V. Ash on April 27, 1963. He retired in 1982 from the Air Force, choosing to reside in Pickford. At the time of his passing, he was employed with Kinross Township. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and, most of all, being with his family.

He is survived by his loving wife, Doris (Jo) of Pickford, Mich.; children: Robert Jr. (Kristie) Juda of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Monica (Lee) Touchton of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Patti (Curtis) Crawford of Kinross, Mich.; grandchildren: A.J. and Chris Touchton and Dereck and Justin Juda; a sister, Betty (Robert) Klosowski of Stuart, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Also surviving is Bob's best friend, Maggie, who was always by his side. Even when times were tough, she was there.

His family wishes to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers during his illness -- especially his co-workers and Chippewa County Hospice.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 18 from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Ross Funeral Home in Pickford, Mich. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 19 at 11 a.m. at the Ross Funeral Home with Reverend Wendell Ash officiating. His final resting place will be at the Lakeside cemetery in Kinross, Mich. Full Military Honors will follow the committal service.

His family invites everyone for a Funeral Luncheon at the Kinross Township Hall.

Memorials may be made to Chippewa County Hospice.

Ross Funeral Home of Pickford, Mich. assisted the family with the arrangements.

Roy Wagner

Roy Weldon Wagner, 79, of 1311 Pinecrest Dr., Reidsville, N.C., and former Sault resident, died on Wednesday, January 8, 2003 at Annie Penn Hospital.

A native of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., he was the son of the late Roy and Elva Smart Wagner and had lived in Reidsville for the past 57 years. He was an accountant with J. Michael Fargis & Associates (formerly Strand, Skees & Jones) and for many years was the bookkeeper for the Rockingham Theater.

Roy was a U.S. Army veteran of W.W.II, serving in Germany with the Rainbow Division, a member of the Reidsville Lion's Club, the American Legion, a past chairman of the Rockingham Co. Ambulance Board, worked with Meals on Wheels and was very active in the Republican Party.

He was an active and faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday School, was an ordained Elder and Deacon and a former Youth Fellowship Leader.

Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Christina Menzies Wager; brothers, Elmond Wagner and Gerald Wagner.

Surviving are daughters, Peggy W. Hearp and husband, Wyatt of Columbus, Ga., Patricia W. Holcomb and husband, Ernie, of Reidsville, N.C., and Lyn W. Hux and husband, Dr. Steve Hux, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; brothers: Bill Wagner of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., and Kenneth Wagner of Waterford, Mich.; sisters: Donna W. Trujillo of Roswell, N.M., Elva Mae W. Fahr of Prudenville, Mich., Gala W. Perry of Duarte, Calif., Carol W. Waldo of Sylvan Lake, Mich., and Nancy W. Taylor of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; grandchildren: Chris Hearp, Jenna H. Sanders, Mary Holcomb, Matthew Hux and Anna Hux; and great-granddaughter, Noell Sanders.

The family saw friends during the evening on Friday, January 10th, at Citty Funeral Home as well as other times at their residence. A memorial service was conducted on Saturday, January 11th at the First Presbyterian Church.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rockingham Co., P.O. Box 281, Wentworth, N.C. 27375 or to the First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Main St., Reidsville, N.C. 27320.

Pearl Fornnarino

Pearl Benson Fornnarino, 86, a long-term resident of Belpre, Ohio, passed away on January 12, 2003 at the Camden Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, W.V. Most recently, the Fornnarinos resided in Lady Lake, Fla.

She was born March 15, 1916 in Dafter, Michigan, a daughter of the late John Edward and Ella Jane Arnott Benson. Pearl was one of the original founders of the Riverview Credit Union, Belpre, Ohio, where she was managing director from 1968-1984. She attended Northlake Presbyterian Church in Lady Lake, Fla., enjoyed her family and friends, and enjoyed reading.

She is survived by her five children and their spouses: George and Carolyn Fornnarino of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Karen and James Mark Linder of Green Valley, Ariz., Cheryl and Richard Reeder of Belpre, Ohio, Linda and G. Latham Myers of Onego, W.V., and Gary and Joni Fornnarino of Heath, Ohio; one brother, Dan Benson of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; seven grandchildren: Gina and Sam Gallo of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Lisa and Brad Staver of Englewood, Colo., Mark and Sharda Fornnarino of Denver, Colo., Kristen and Leslie Fornnarino of Heath, Ohio, Shannon Reeder of Eugene, Ore., and Cydney Moora of Denver, Colo.; and two great-grandchildren, Mia and Anna Gallo of Highlands Ranch, Colo.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George M. Fornnarino in March 2002, and seven brothers and sisters.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Tatman Funeral Home in Belpre, Ohio with the Pastor Donald Whiteman officiating. Interment will be at the Florida National cemetery in Bushnell, Fla. Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 608 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Donations may be made to the National Stroke Association, 9707 East Easter Lane, Englewood, CO 80112.

Julie Vassar

Julie Marie Vassar, age 48, of S. Park Avenue in Cedarville, Michigan passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 14, 2003, at her home surrounded by her loving family after a short illness.

Julie was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on January 27, 1954 and was a lifelong resident of the Cedarville area. She worked as an Administrative Assistant in the Sault for the Sault Tribe and for the Inter-Tribal Council at the Lambert Center in St. Ignace, Michigan. She has also worked for JFB Manufacturing in St. Ignace.

She was a member of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians, the Title 9 Parents Committee and the Hessel Pow-Wow Committee. Julie enjoyed sewing, native crafts and volunteering for many tribal functions.

Julie is survived by her soul mate, Edward J. Cook; two sons: Matthew James Vassar and Brent Anthony Vassar, both living at home; her mother, Margaret Vassar of Cedarville; her brother, Arthur J. Causley of Hessel, Michigan; her sister, Rita A. Vassar of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; two great nieces, Maeci and Maddison Vassar and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, Eugene Vassar, on July 29, 1966 and her sister-in-law, Kathleen Causley, on July 12, 2002.

Traditional services will begin on Wednesday, January 15th at 5 p.m. at the Hessel Tribal Center and continue until Friday, January 17th at 10 a.m. when the Pipe Carriers Traditional Service will begin.

Burial will be in the Italian cemetery in Clark Township in the Spring. Memorials may be left to the family.

The Reamer Funeral Home of Pickford, Michigan is handling the arrangements.

Liedel, Alfred

Liedel, Alfred, born October 24, 1924, passed away at Tendercare Nursing Home, on January 15, 2003. Arrangements will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home.

Eudene MacDonald

Eudene MacDonald, 89 of St. Ignace died Saturday March 29 at 5:05 a.m. at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie following a short illness.

She was born in St. Ignace, Apr. 15, 1913. Her parents were Edmund and Rose (Allen) Cousineau. She graduated from LaSalle High School in 1932 and on Sept. 21, 1934, she married Leslie MacDonald. He died Jan. 5, 1971.

She was very active in the United Methodist Church, taught Sunday school for many years and was active in the United Methodist Women group. She also worked at Winkelmans and the Red Owl store.

She is survived by a daughter, Ann (Dan) Scizak of Rapid River; a sister, Margaret Hill of Lambertville, Mich.; grandchildren Leslie Scizak and Mandi and Mark Dubord; great-grandchildren Sidney and Gavin Scizak and Brandon and Austin Dubord and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, James Cousineau in 1970 and a sister, Hazel Brown in 1995.

Friends may call at the United Methodist Church in St. Ignace on Monday, March 31 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., where services will be held at 3 p.m. with Rev. James Balfour officiating.

Burial will be in Gros Cap cemetery later in the spring.

Dodson Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Gerald Eveleigh

Gerald Wayne "Jerry" Eveleigh, 48, of Traverse City and Cadillac, died Friday, March 28, 2003, at Munson Medical Center.

Born March 7, 1955 in Mason, he was the son of Robert V and Edna E. (Williams) Eveleigh.

Jerry grew up in Lansing and lived most of his life in the Detroit area. He relocated to the Traverse City / Cadillac area in 1998. Jerry enjoyed the Northern Michigan outdoor life style. He also enjoyed family and easily made friends wherever he traveled.

Survivors include his mother Edna; his sister Patricia (Dennis) Heikkinen of Stephenson; brothers Frederick (Linda) Eveleigh of Rudyard, Robert (Mary) Eveleigh of Charlevoix, Randall Eveleigh of Berkley, Calif., Steven (Cindy) Eveleigh of Traverse City; and 8 nieces and 2 nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Visitation will be at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Monday, March 31 from 5 to 8 pm.

Services will be at the funeral home on Tuesday April 1 at 11am with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Gary Hogue will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the Gerald Eveleigh memorial fund.

Ida Lockhart

Ida Beatrice (Weston) Lockhart, 90, of Pickford, Mich. passed away on March 28, 2003 at Mackinac County Long Term Care Facility in St. Ignace, Mich. She was born on December 1, 1912 in Chicago, Ill. to Lewis Grenier and Olga Weston.

Beatrice took in laundry for many years for the Les Cheneaux Island community and cared for children that needed a mom for a short time. She was a formal member of the Bethel Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school. She belonged to the Blairville Homemaker Club. He enjoyed crocheting, sewing, and visiting and laughing with friends and family.

Beatrice is survived by two daughters: Marilyn McCready of Cheboygan, Mich. and Marjean (Verne) Izzard of Pickford, Mich.; six grandchildren: Carl (Cathy) McCready of Cheboygan, Mich., Christine McCready of Mackinac Island, Mich., Cory (Barb) McCready of Alabaster, Ala., Duane Izzard of Pickford, Mich., Susie (Bill) Colosky of Pickford, Mich., and Patti Jo (Robin) Williams of Elmira, Mich.; 13 great-grandchildren: Carl (Julie), Caryn, Carrie, Chalista and Alexandria McCready, Timothy (Jessica), Michele, and Bryan Williams, Darin, Brad, and Curtis Bawks, Amber and Stacey Colosky; two great-great-grandchildren: Alex McCready and Krystale Williams; one sister, Udel Griffin of Bay City, Mich.; two sisters-in-law: Etta (Al) Laponsie of Rochester Hills, Mich. and Edna (Charles) Grenier of Cheboygan, Mich.

Beatrice was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Lockhart, on February, 14, 1980; three grandchildren: Nancy, Candy and William Izzard; five brothers: Achille, Bernard, and Charles Grenier and Ernest and Kenneth Sherlund; four sisters: Cecelia Grenier, Eulene, Vida, and Agnes Sherlund.

Visitation will be Monday, March 31 from 4-8 p.m. at the Reamer Funeral Home in Pickford, Mich.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday, April 1 at 11 a.m. at Reamer Funeral Home with Reverend Lynn Chappell officiating. Burial will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens in Bruce Township, Mich.

Memorials may be left to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.

Arrangements are being handled by the Reamer Funeral Home of Pickford, Mich.

NELSON, DIANNE

NELSON, DIANNE, 64, of Newberry, passed away on Friday, March 28, 2003 at Marquette General Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home of Sault Ste. Marie.

Kenneth Ruby

Kenneth L. Ruby, 74, of Lakefield Township, died Monday evening, June 9, 2003 at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette.

Born September 29, 1928 in Detroit, son of the late Lyle and Pearl (Mooney) Ruby, Ken move to the Newberry area at the age of 18 and had been a resident since. From 1963 to 1976, Ken owned and operated Newberry Collision and later continued his employment as a metal finisher at Teske-Rapp Motor Company (later Newberry Motors) until his retirement in 1990. Ken was an active member of the F.O.E. John T. Bouchard Aerie #3701 of Newberry where he served as president for four years and was also the Great Lakes Regional President from 1994-1995. He also served as the bingo chairman for 15 years and was a member of the Michigan Eagles Family Recreation Center. Ken's hobbies and interests also included hunting, fishing, woodworking and was a Little League Baseball coach for several years.

Besides his parents, Ken is preceded in death by his son, Roger D. Ruby, and sister, Louise Mills. Survivors include his loving wife, the former Reva Mills of Lakefield Township, whom he married on September 4, 1948 in Newberry; his children: Kenneth (Jan) of Shepherd, Calvin (Pam) and Sharon (William) Abram all of Newberry; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry with Pastor Audrey Dunlap officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Home cemetery in Newberry. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 11th from 4-7 p.m. with an Eagle's memorial service conducted by the members of the club at 6 p.m.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family.
