John Robert Zeug, 36, Redwood Falls, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Redwood Area Hospital, Redwood Falls. Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 5, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Milroy. Rehkamp Funeral Home, Marshall, handled the arrangements.
John was born April 9, 1965, in Marshall, to Robert and Margie (DeMeyer) Zeug of Milroy. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Milroy. He attended Tracy Public Schools. John enjoyed tools and keeping them in order. He enjoyed being out on the farm and spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, taking walks and riding in the semi with his brothers. He also enjoyed going on outings with the residents at Lincoln House in Redwood Falls. John was employed on farms for several years until his health limited his ability. He resided at Unity House in Worthington, Gleasoners in Bird Island, Patricia Duffy Apartments in Marshall and Lincoln House in Redwood Falls until the time of his death.
John is survived by his parents, Robert and Marge Zeug of Milroy, sisters, Patty and husband John Rosenhammer of Sleepy Eye, Kate and husband Todd Palmer of Lino Lakes, Diane and husband Darren Storkamp of Savage, and Theresa of Brookings, S.D.; brothers, Kevin of Walnut Grove, Greg and wife DiVenna of Marshall, and Allan, Mike and Jim all of Walnut Grove; nieces and nephews, Joseph, Laura, MaryGrace, Rebecca and John Rosenhammer, Brenten and Trevor Zeug, and Christopher Palmer; grandmothers, Mary Audell Zeug of Sartell and Margaret DeMeyer of Minnesota. John was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Joseph B. Zeug and Julius DeMeyer and uncle James G. DeMeyer.

Gene G. Forstner, 75, rural New Ulm, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at his home. Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 15, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, New Ulm, with interment in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the New Ulm Veterans Organizations. MN Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to New Ulm School District 88 or to the donors choice.
Gene was born Aug. 2, 1926, in New Ulm, to Frank and Veronica (Boettger) Forstner. He attended New Ulm Public Schools and was a 1943 graduate of New Ulm High School. He served in the United States Navy from 1944-1946 on a destroyer in the Pacific Theatre. Gene married Evelyn Kral on Sept. 6, 1949, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. After marriage, they farmed in Lake Hanska Township, Brown County for 45 years, until retiring in 1994. They continued to live on the farm. Gene served on the New Ulm School District 88 School Board from 1966 to 1978, and then was appointed again in 1994, and he served until the present time. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, where he served as an usher for many years. He was a past member of the Sioux Valley Hospital Board of Directors, a member of the New Ulm Hub Club, a past member and president of the Sigel Creamery, a past member of the Sigel School District 75 School Board, and was a past player-manager of the Searles and Hanska amateur baseball teams. He enjoyed baseball and serving his community.
Gene is survived by his wife, Evelyn Forstner of rural New Ulm; mother, Veronica Forstner of New Ulm; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Steve Kohlhepp of Maple Grove, Margaret "Marggi" and Randy Thordson of rural Hanska, and Marlys and Gerard Davis of Beaverton, Ore.; sons and daughters-in-law, Dave and Carrie Forstner of rural New Ulm, Steven and Franke Forstner of Prior Lake, Richard and Michelle Forstner of Afton, and Kevin and Jodi Forstner of New Ulm; 23 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lois and Luverne Fischer of rural Sleepy Eye, and Connie and Charles Reichensperger of St. Cloud; brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Donna Forstner of rural Gibbon, Myron and Shirley Forstner, and Rollie and Arlis Forstner, all of rural New Ulm. Gene was preceded in death by his father, Frank Forstner; and by a daughter, Monica Forstner in infancy.

Alvin J. Helget, 83, of Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at the Franklin Health Care Center in Franklin. Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Alvin was born Jan. 29, 1918, in Sleepy Eye, to Otto and Clara (Haala) Helget. He attended country school in Stark Township, Brown County. On June 3, 1940, he married Leona Fischer at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. After marriage, they farmed in Albin Township, Brown County, and he was still currently farming there until his death. After the death of his wife, Leona, Alvin moved to Countryside Retirement Community in Sleepy Eye. He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Sleepy Eye Knights of Columbus Council #3134, the Sleepy Eye Eagles Club #3428, and had served on the Stark Baseball Board for many years.
Alvin is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Kathleen Helget and Darrel and Vivian Helget, all of St. James; Gerald and Dorothy Helget of Sleepy Eye, Marlin and Carol Helget of New Ulm, Duane and Ruth Helget of St. James, Dale Helget of Rochester, and Lorin and Denise Helget of Sleepy Eye; 41 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Sylvester and Helen Helget of Sleepy Eye, Victor and Valeria Helget of New Ulm, and Delmar and Agnes Helget of Sleepy Eye; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ervin and Marian Fischer of Sleepy Eye; and a sister-in-law, Arnolda Fischer of Sleepy Eye. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leona Helget on Nov. 25, 1998; his parents, Otto and Clara Helget; grandchildren, Shannon Helget, Craig Helget and Janelle Helget; a brother and a sister, both in infancy; a brother and sister-in-law, Wendelin and Veronica "Fronie" Helget; a brother-in-law, Willard Fischer; and a sister-in-law, Caroline Helget.
Casket bearers were Alvin's grandsons, Brad Helget, Randy Helget, Jeremy Helget, Kyle Helget, Cole Helget and Larry Helget. The lector was his granddaughter, Nancy Remmert. Father Edward Ardolf celebrated the Mass.

Raymond Otto Roiger, 82, St. Michael, formerly of Springfield, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at the Monticello-Big Lake Nursing Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Oct. 26, 11:30 a.m., at The Church of St. Michael in St. Michael, with interment in St. Raphael Cemetery in Springfield on Friday, Oct. 26, at 4:30 p.m. Visitation will take place at the Peterson Chapel St. Michael-Albertville Funeral Home Thursday, Oct. 25, 4-8 p.m. A combined Knights of Columbus and parish prayer service will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Raymond was born Nov. 18, 1918, the son of Joseph and Katherine "Kate" Sturm Roiger, in Bashaw Township, Brown County. On May 14, 1940, Raymond was joined in holy marriage to Loretta Hillesheim at St. Mary's Church, Sleepy Eye. The couple were blessed with six children. Raymond farmed for several years in Bashaw Township. He worked for ten years at Botsford Lumber Company in Currie. He also was employed for ten years at Taits Super Valu in Hopkins, and later, part-time at Vern's Grocery Store in St. Michael. Raymond was a member of The Church of St. Michael and belonged to the Knights of Columbus Council #4174.
Raymond is survived by his wife, Loretta J. Roiger of St. Benedict's Senior Community in Monticello; children, James Roiger of Monticello, Ark.; Linus and wife Mary Roiger of Randolph; Janice and husband Dwight Beltrand of Rogers; Joleen Randall of Spokane, Wash.; Gary Roiger of Antioch, Ill.; and Wayne Roiger of Golden Valley; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Angeline and husband Wilbert Haala of New Ulm; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Otto, Arthur and LeRoy Roiger.
Casket bearers are Brian Roiger, Dan Roiger, John Randall, Randy Fales, Jim Arbogast, Marty Dertinger and Ben Harris.

Eugene "Gene" M. Fromm, 61, Sunnyvale, Calif., formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at his home. Funeral services were held Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis. Sturm Funeral Home of Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements.
Eugene was born March 15, 1940, in Sleepy Eye, the son of John and Agnes (Neid) Fromm. He attended rural School District 60 and graduated from St. Mary's High School in Sleepy Eye, in 1958. Gene was a 20-year veteran of the United States Air Force, which included two tours of duty in Vietnam. He served his last duty and the pentagon, retiring in May of 1979 as a Senior Master Sergeant. Gene earned a masters degree at the University of Maryland. He was vice-president of human resources at Golden Bay Federal Credit Union in Sunnyvale, Calif. at the time of his death. Gene loved to travel. He traveled to all 50 states, plus many countries throughout the world. He enjoyed collecting koalas, researching family history and visiting family and friends.
Gene is survived by his mother, Agnes Fromm of Sleepy Eye; brothers, Ervin and wife Dignora of Sioux Falls, S.D., Ed and wife Kathy of Sleepy Eye, David and wife Janis of Eagle Lake, Cletus and wife Dawn of Owatonna, Michael and wife Gail of Claremont, Mark and wife Rolene of Eagle Lake, and Joel and wife Lois of New Ulm; sisters, Rose of Sleepy Eye, Doris and husband Leo Csukker of Fairfax, and Carol and husband Michael Whitney of Mankato; sister-in-law, Rosie Fromm of Sleepy Eye; many uncles and aunts and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, John in 1964; sister, Joanne in 1972; brother, Jerome in 1991; and sister-in-law, Judy in 1971.

Howard Ernest Gluth, 80, Morgan, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at his home, following a battle with cancer. Funeral services were held on Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Morgan, with interment in Morgan City Cemetery. Nelson-Martin Funeral Service of Redwood Falls handled the arrangements.
Howard, the son of Ernest and Margaret (Heckler) Gluth, was born Jan. 7, 1921 on the family farm in Eden Township, Brown County. He grew up in Eden Township and received his education from District #57 County School. On Dec. 15, 1943, Howard was united in marriage with Deloris Viola Rose at the United Methodist Parsonage in Morgan. Howard was raised on the family farm where he also farmed, raising grain and livestock, until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees. Howard enjoyed farming, gardening, refinishing furniture, going to auctions, and spending time with his family.
Howard is survived by his wife, Deloris Gluth of Morgan; children, Bob and wife Sue Gluth of New Ulm, and Jeanne and husband John Dallenbach of Morgan; grandchildren, Beth and husband Tim Chadderdon of LeCenter, Jenifer and husband Troy Kalis of Baxter, Rick and wife Melissa Dallenbach of Morgan, Joel and wife Jill Dallenbach of Owatonna, Shawana and husband Chad Kohls of Danube, Shannon and husband Ray Bartlett of Willmar and Kelly Dallenbach of Marshall; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Hannah and Emily Chadderdon, Logan, Kalis, Drew and Dain Dallenbach, Jaden and Julia Dallenbach, Amanda, Amber and Jay Kohls, and Kaleb Bartlett; brother and sisters, Mary and husband Glen Leopold of Sanborn, Margaret Johnson of Tracy, Norma Gluth of Olivia, Denis and wife Eunice Gluth of Morgan, and Diane Hostettler of Minneapolis; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bob and wife Bernice Rose of Morgan and Marie Gluth of Post Falls, Idaho; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, June; brother, Virgil; sister-in-law, Arlene; and brothers-in-law, Don and Clyde.

Janette E. Goblirsch, 69, New Ulm, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at her home. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Janette was born April 1, 1932, in Albin Township, Brown County, the daughter of Albert and Elizabeth (Soukup) Goblirsch. She grew up in Sleepy Eye, and graduated from Sleepy Eye Public High School in 1950. Janette moved to St. Paul with her twin sister, where they worked for three years. They moved to Chicago and New York, before returning to Sleepy Eye, where they lived on the farm with their parents until 1989. Janette has lived in New Ulm since the fall of 1994. She enjoyed reading and doing research at the library.
Janette is survived by her twin sister, Jane Goblirsch of Fairfax; sisters, Mariann Treml of Comfrey, Angela and husband Robert Augustin of Comfrey, and Beatrice Goblirsch of Japan; brothers, Clarence Goblirsch of Comfrey, Sylvan Goblirsch of Comfrey, and Stanley and wife Joyce Goblirsch of Modesto, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters in infancy, Armella and Thecla; sister-in-law, Verna Goblirsch; brother-in-law, Ben Treml; nieces, Thecla Treml and Diane Augustin; nephews, Christopher Goblirsch, Neil Treml, Richard Goblirsch and Grett Goblirsch.

Raymond F. Wenninger, 73, Lafayette, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester. Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Lafayette, with interment in the church cemetery.
Raymond Frank Wenninger, the son of Frank and Sophie (Ubl) Wenninger, was born July 21, 1928 in Nicollet County, where he grew up on the family farm and attended country school. He was united in marriage to Marcella Hillesheim on Sept. 14, 1949, at Holy Trinity in New Ulm. Together they farmed in Sibley County, near Lafayette, for the remainder of his life. Raymond was a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, a former member of the church board, a former member of the Lafayette Lions Club and a board member of the Lafayette Farmer's Coop for 21 years.
Raymond is survived by his wife Marcella Wenninger of Lafayette, daughters and sons-in-law, Bernette and Ernie Puncochar of Maple Lake, Bonita and Don Brandel of Shakopee, Jane and Tom Beranek of New Ulm, Brenda and Doug Berens of Prior Lake, and Joleen and Craig Wilson of Lafayette; sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn and Kathy Wenninger of Lafayette, Leslie Wenninger and special friend Jami Ellingson, Leon and Teresa Wenninger of New Ulm, Kevin and Barb Wenninger of Winthrop, and John Wenninger and his fiance Paula Thunander of Lafayette; 25 grandchildren; sisters, Loretta and husband Harry Stueber of St. Paul, and Darlene and husband James Schmidt of New Ulm; brothers, Melvin and wife Mary Ann Wenninger of Sauk Center, and Leonard Wenninger of Tracy; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Irene Schlumpberger of New Ulm, Erwin and Elaine Hillesheim of New Ulm, Bernice and Henry Holm of Gibbon, Leo and Margaret Hillesheim of New Ulm, Lester and Cathy Hillesheim of New Ulm, Gladys and Kenneth Salfer of Wabasso; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Vernon.

Abby Lynn Windschitl, 10, Comfrey, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at her home. Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Springfield, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Abby was born April 8, 1991, in Springfield, to Michael and Debra (Helget) Windschitl. She was a student at Springfield School, attending the 4th grade, and was currently being home schooled. Abby enjoyed watching TV, Sesame Street and Barney. She liked being with her schoolmates and her friends and family. Abby was receiving physical therapy from the New Ulm Medical Center and speech and occupational therapy through the Springfield School system at her home. She was a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church.
Abby is survived by her parents, Mike and Debbie Windschitl of Comfrey; sister, Kate Windschitl of Comfrey; grandparents, Jerome and Rita Windschitl of Comfrey and Ken and Sally Helget of Springfield; aunts and uncles, Joe and Deb Windschitl of Sleepy Eye, Pat and Colleen Windschitl of Springfield, Roseanne and John Kaseforth of Springfield, Diane and Jeff Kretsch of Springfield, Julie and Mike Hayden of Springfield, Tammy and Corey Schewe of Sleepy Eye, Scott Helget of Springfield, and Paula and Randy Sturm of Sanborn.

Phyllis Florence Heinen, 67, Springfield, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Springfield Medical Center. Funeral services were held Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Springfield, with interment in Springfield City Cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Phyllis was born Feb. 24, 1934, in Tracy, to Victor and Florence (Harnack) Rasmussen. The family moved to Springfield, where Phyllis graduated from high school in 1952. On July 4, 1953, Phyllis married Raymond A. Heinen in Brookings, S.D. They returned to live in Springfield, where they opened and operated the 4 Seasons Drive Inn and Store from 1969 until the early 1980s. Phyllis was a long time member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was involved with many of the church activities. She belonged to a card club, a church circle and helped out many times at St. John Lutheran Home. Phyllis enjoyed working at the store, bowling, her birthday club, reading, being with her grandchildren and dearly loved to cook.
Phyllis is survived by her children, Michael and wife Julie Heinen of Nicollet, Kathy and husband Douglas Price of Eagan, Beth and husband Sam Domeier of Sleepy Eye, and David and wife Pam Heinen of Springfield; step-children, Raymond L. and wife Arlette Heinen of Yankton, S.D., Lawrence Heinen, Brenda and husband Sheldon Bratsch of Hutchinson; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; mother, Florence Rasmussen of Rapid City, SD; sisters, Carol and husband Jerry Osteraas of Bloomington, Anita and husband Darold Ashton of Apple Valley, Lucille and husband Hans Misvaer of Bloomington, Marian and husband Jim Johnson of Sartell, Susan and husband Rick Hogan of Golden. She was preceded in death by her father, Victor Rasmussen; and husband, Raymond Heinen in 1999.

Ella Antonia Junker, 85, Redwood Falls, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Wood Dale Nursing Home in Redwood Falls. Funeral services were held Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Arrangements were handled by Sturm Funeral Home.
Ella was born Sept. 3, 1916, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Henry R. and Amelia (Zettler) Evers. Ella moved with her family and grew up near Comfrey. She helped on the family farm until she married Henry "Hank" Junker on Oct. 12, 1938, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Comfrey. The couple lived and farmed in the Comfrey, Lamberton and Clements areas prior to moving to Sleepy Eye. They lived and farmed near Sleepy Eye from 1957 until 1978, when they moved into Sleepy Eye. Ella worked seasonally for many years at Del Monte, the last five years full time, and retired in 1982. Hank and Ella moved to the nursing home in Redwood Falls in 1997. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. Ella enjoyed gardening, canning, visiting family, fishing, and playing cards.
Ella is survived by her son, Eugene and wife Rosemary Junker of Redwood Falls; daughter, Judith and husband Dennis Senst of Jeffers; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; sister, Anne and husband Harry Pidde of Nevis; and brother, Roy and wife Violet Evers of Lamberton. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry in 1998; and great-grandson, Jake Whitaker.

Theresa Nachreiner, 97, Springfield, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield. Funeral services were held Friday at St. Raphael's Catholic Church with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Theresa was born Aug. 19, 1904, in Mulligan Township, Brown County, to Barthol and Theresa (Remiger) Mathiowetz. She attended country school, after with work at the family farm. On April 26, 1937, she married Hugo Nachreiner at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth. Following marriage, the couple lived in Burnstown Township and after Hugo's death in 1980, Theresa moved into Springfield in 1986 and became a resident of St. John Lutheran Home in 1990. Theresa was a long-term member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church and St. Anne's C.C.W. She enjoyed going to Brownsville, Texas with her husband each winter for nearly 30 years. She especially enjoyed fishing and spending time with her grandchildren.
Theresa is survived by her son, Denis and wife Dorothy Nachreiner of Springfield; daughters, LaMay and husband Richard Drexler of Redwood Falls and Irene and husband Clarence Weiss of Comfrey; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Marie C. Cook of Sleepy Eye; brothers, Ethelbert and wife Agnes Mathiowetz of Sleepy Eye, Anton and wife Phyllis Mathiowetz of St. Cloud, and Art and wife Winifred Mathiowetz of Comfrey; sisters-in-law, Ruth, Rose, Mary, Ida, Lucille and Agnes Mathiowetz, and Arlene Ebilsisor. Theresa was preceded in death by her parents; husband Hugo; son, Eugene in infancy; brothers, Raymond, Wendelin, Ambrose, Alfred, Joseph, Leo and Leonard Mathiowetz and two brothers in infancy; sister-in-law, Sarah Mathiowetz; and brother-in-law, Wilfred (Dutch) Cook.
Casket bearers were Wayne Cook, Allen Drexler, Dana Nachreiner, Bob Mathiowetz, Ron Mathiowetz and Chuck Mathiowetz.

Christine Marie Wandersee, 85, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Thursday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Christine was born Dec. 16, 1916 in Dunlop, Iowa, the daughter of Christian P. and Sarah Viola (Pachen) Hansen. she moved with her family to a farm near Evan and attended grade school in Evan. Christine graduated in 1936 from Sleepy Eye Public High School. After graduation, she helped her family and also worked on other family's farms. Christine married Floyd Tews in June of 1941 at the bride's home in Evan. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye, where Christine worked seasonally at Pietrus Foods and Del Monte. Floyd preceded her in death in May of 1959. Christine remained in Sleepy Eye and worked at the Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital. She married Herbert F. Wandersee on Sept. 25, 1965, in Sleepy Eye. Herbert preceded her in death in January of 1974. Christine moved to Countryside Retirement Community in January of this year. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, the Ladies Aid and the Sleepy Eye VFW Auxiliary. She also was a member of the Swinging Grandma's Square Dance Group and she was a 4-H leader when her children were young. Christine enjoyed flowers, gardening, square dancing, traveling, ceramics and painting. She especially enjoyed taking her grandchildren fishing and spending time with family and friends.
Christine is survived by her children, Jim Tews of Round Rock, Tex., Judy Risen of Onalaska, Wisc., Mickey and husband Steve Meyer of Springfield, Eileen Wandersee of Wyoming, Rita Tews of Honolulu, Hawaii; step-children, Wally and wife Charlotte Wandersee of Bloomington, Shirley and husband Lester "Skip" Schmidt of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Jean Pipes of Springfield; step son-in-law, Larry Keyes of Tucson, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren; 19 step-grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Floyd Tews; husband, Herbert Wandersee; sisters, Lillian Ziese and Susan Keehn; son-in-law, Lynn Wandersee; granddaughter, Renee Risen; step-daughter, Lois Keyes; and step-granddaughter, Michelle.

John M. Bauer, age 86 of Sleepy Eye, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002 at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye. Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7 at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye and continues from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. There will be a K.C. and C.O.F. rosary at 4 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m., both at the funeral home on Thursday. Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. Interment will be in Veteran's Memorial Garden in Home Cemetery with full military honors.
John is survived by his wife, Hazel Bauer of Sleepy Eye; son, Mike Bauer of Sleepy Eye; daughters, Kathy and husband Glen Turbes of Willmar, Mary Jo and husband Dale Evers of Sleepy Eye; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Louise Bauer of New Ulm, Carol Bartles of Crosby, Helen Radde of Watertown and Jeanne and husband Hooch Hansen of Sleepy Eye; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alfred and George; granddaughter, Mary Marie Bauer; sisters-in-law, Carla Bauer, June Mock and Pearl Lindeman; brothers-in-law, Elmer Bartles, Fred W. Radde, Joe Mock and Martin Lindeman.
John was born August 8, 1915 in New Ulm, the son of John and Mary (Guldan) Bauer. He graduated from New Ulm Public School. He married Hazel Picker on Oct. 26, 1938 at St. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church in Glencoe. He owned and operated Sleepy Eye Greenhouse for 41 years until his retirement in 1990. He was an avid bowler and musician. John was a member of the Sleepy Eye Drum and Bugle Corps for 21 years, New Ulm German Band, Schell's Hobo Band and New Ulm Greenhouse Boys Band. He served in the United States Army during WWII and was stationed in Hawaii. He blew taps for 395 military services with the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, 3rd and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters, and a life-long member of VFW Post 800 and American Legion Post 7. He was also a member of the Sleepy Eye Lions Club and Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Casket bearers were Matt Evers, Jeremy Brown, Joe Jensen, Rafa Martinez, Steve Hansen and Tom Hansen.
