James F. Radl
James F. Radl, Sun City Center, Fla., formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, in Sun City Center. A memorial service was held Monday, April 12, at Lewers Funeral Home in Ruskin, Fla.
James was born in Sleepy Eye and moved to Sun City Center after a transient engineering position with General Mills.
James is survived by his loving wife, Marlene Radl of Sun City Center, Fla.; sons, Richard and wife Sharon Radl of Little Falls and Brad and wife Terry Radl of Chardon, Ohio; daughter, Linda and husband Timothy Martin of Tampa, Fla.; sisters, Dorothy Carstens, Alice Ryan, Lorraine Mathiowetz, Ruth Schaefer and Joyce Jobe; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Lucille "Lucy" Simon
Lucille "Lucy" Simon, 71, New Ulm, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Monday, April 12, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm, with interment in New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Lucille Helen Goblirsch was born Oct. 6, 1932, in New Ulm, the daughter of Otto and Barbara (Fleck) Goblirsch. She graduated from New Ulm High School in 1951. Lucy married Wesley Simon on Aug. 5, 1952, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. After marriage, they farmed in Cottonwood Township, Brown County until 1967, when they moved to New Ulm. Lucy had worked at the Brown County Fair for 15 years. She enjoyed playing cards, canning, embroidery and old time music. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, New Ulm, the St. Mary's Catholic Aid Council and the Christian Mother's Society. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the donor's choice.
Lucy is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Mary and Raymond Lange of Morgan, Barbara Becker of New Ulm; sons and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Pamela Simon of Redwood Falls and Pat Simon of New Ulm; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Wesley Simon on June 12, 2003.

Ralph Thul
Ralph John Thul, 62, Sleepy Eye, died on Monday, April 12, 2004, at Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Friday, April 16 with interment in the church cemetery. Arrangements were with Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. Ralph John Thul was born July 25, 1941, in Richmond, the son of Al and Lorraine (Thoms) Thul. Ralph grew up on a farm by Eden Valley and Richmond and moved to Sleepy Eye where he attended St. Mary's School. On Oct. 14, 1968, Ralph married Geraldine Tiedeken in Comfrey. Ralph had several jobs in the area including working at Moorman Feeds, Woodrich Construction, Sanitary Dairy, Orchid Inn and Del Monte. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Alcoholic Anonymus for 11 years. He enjoyed gardening, riding his bike, walking Tippy and Max, watching the Twins and Vikings, spending time at the L& L and Schultz cafes and keeping in close contact with friends and relatives.
He is survived by his daughter, Sheila M. Thul of New Ulm; son, Scott and wife Lisa Thul of Morton; six grandchildren; mother, Lorraine Thul of Sleepy Eye; mother-in-law, Lillian Windschitl of Comfrey; sister-in-law, Jo Ellen Thul of Huntsville; sisters, Joan and husband Jerome Schimschock of Sleepy Eye, Phyllis and husband Gary Heinrich of Woodbury, Judy and husband Curtis Olson of Ham Lake, and Diane and husband Chuck Case of Sleepy Eye; brother-in-law, Casper and wife Linda Tiedeken of New Ulm; sister-in-law, Cheryl and husband John Kachelmeier of Silver Lake; several nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces. He was preceded in death by his father, Al Thul; daughter, Sandra; brother, Donald and niece.,Terri (Thul) Hill.

Robert J. "Bob" Appel
Robert "Bob" John Appel, 68, Sleepy Eye, died Friday, April 16, 2004, at Sleepy Eye Medical Center. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye on Tuesday, April 20, with interment in the church cemetery. Military rites were performed by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard. Arrangements were with Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. E-mail condolences may be sent to the family via www.sturmfh.com. The family prefers memorials given to the donors choice.
Robert John Appel was born July 27, 1935, in Buffalo, to Guido and Frieda (Kotten) Appel. Shortly after, the family moved to Sleepy Eye. Robert attended Sleepy Eye St. Mary's Grade and High Schools, graduating in 1953. He entered the United States Army in 1954, served in the Corps of Engineers as a heavy equipment operator and was discharged in 1956. Robert married Florence Faerber on Oct. 10, 1959, at St. Mary's Church in New Ulm. Bob worked at Roman Weiss Construction, Montgomery Ward in New Ulm and Hose Hardware. In 1972, Bob and his wife Florence started Captain Clean Services and continued until his retirement in 1997. Bob was a member of St. Mary's Church. He was also a member of Turner Hall in New Ulm and a member of the board of directors. He was a past member of the Servicemen's Club. Bob enjoyed carpentry and woodworking, golfing, hunting and fishing and playing sheephead, poker and other card games with very dear and cherished friends.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Appel of Sleepy Eye; son, Stephen and wife Karen Appel of New Ulm; grandchildren, Riley Matthew and Emily Elizabeth; brothers, Leon and wife Victoria Appel of Phoenix, Ariz., Duane Appel of Kallispell, Mont., sisters, Virginia and husband Bud Gedney of Bradford, Vt. and Darleen Carroll of Sleepy Eye. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Rebecca Elizabeth and his dear parents.

George S. Robertson
George S. Robertson, 80, Sleepy Eye, died Friday, April 16, 2004, as the result of an automobile accident in rural Sleepy Eye. Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 21, 4-7 p.m., at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Sturm Funeral Home, with interment at Hillside Cemetery in Minneapolis. E-mail condolences may be sent to the family via www.sturmfh.com.
George was born Nov. 29, 1923, in New Ulm, to Charles and Nellie (Hanson) Robertson. He grew up in Hanska and Hutchinson and graduated from Hutchinson High School. He attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, where he met his wife, Joyce Cook. In 1950, he moved to Mankato where he worked as a salesman for Janney, Semple Hill Company. He later founded his own successful wholesale toy company and resided in Mankato until 1973. In later years, he and his wife spent time in Portland Oregon, San Francisco. Calif. and Minneapolis. In 1989, they moved to the family farmhouse in rural Sleepy Eye and wintered in Mesa, Arizona. George was considered by most who knew him as the "consummate salesman." He was a big sports fan, loved to spend a day at the horse races and loved listening to the old "New Ulm style" polka music.
George is survived by his sons, Larry and wife Lynn Robertson of Bloomington and Bruce and wife Mary Robertson of Annandale, Va.; grandchildren, Will and Teddy of Bloomington; and many other friends and relatives.

Joyce Robertson
Joyce (Cook) Robertson, 76, Sleepy Eye, died Friday, April 16, 2004, as the result of an automobile accident near Sleepy Eye. Visitation is Wednesday, April 21, 4-7 p.m., at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. Prayer service is at 7 p.m. at the funeral home, with interment at Hillside Cemetery, Minneapolis. Joyce was born Aug. 10, 1927, in Minneapolis, the daughter of John and Viola (Tiden) Cook. She grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Patrick Henry High School. She graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, in 1949. Joyce married George Robertson on May 29, 1950. She spent most of her life as a homemaker, although was an active volunteer, substitute teacher and librarian. She loved traveling, gardening and was very interested in genealogy. Above all else, she loved spending time with her children and two precious grandchildren.
Joyce is survived by her sons, Larry and wife Lynn Robertson of Bloomington and Bruce and wife Mary Robertson of Annandale, Va.; grandchildren, Will and Teddy of Bloomington and many other friends and relatives. In addition to children and grandchildren, Joyce is survived by a sister, Bonnie Nordby of Bloomington and many long-term friends residing in Mankato.

Rose Mary Gulbrandson
Rose Mary (Sperl) Gulbrandson, 91, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Sleepy Eye Medica Center. Visitation will be at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye on Thursday, April 22, from 9 to 11 a.m. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church Thursday at 11 a.m., with interment in the church cemetery. Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. E-mail condolences may be sent to the family via www.sturmfh.com.
Rose Mary Gulbrandson was born Nov. 2, 1912, in Albin Township, Brown County, the daughter of Andrew P. and Catherine (Schieffert) Sperl. She attended District #28 in Albin Township. Rose worked as a nanny in West St. Paul for several years. On March 1, 1941, she married Omer Gulbrandson in St. Paul Park. The couple lived in Hanska and in 1945, Omer died. In 1947, she moved to Searles and later in 1955, Rose moved to Sleepy Eye. Rose worked at the Family Cafe and in 1965, she moved to New Ulm where she worked at Madsen Bakery. Rose retired in May of 1975. She enjoyed crocheting, baking, watching the Minnesota Twins, crossword puzzles, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Rose is survived by her children, James and wife Connie Gulbrandson of New Ulm, Carol and husband Don Fischer of Maple Grove and Florence and husband Ron Matzen of Brainerd; grandchildren, Paul Matzen and fiance Kathy Lubbers, Jon and wife Jennifer Matzen, Eric and wife Jennifer Gulbrandson, Derek and wife Carrie Fischer and Holly Fischer; seven great-grandchildren and two nieces. She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Hugo, Andrew, John, Ben, Bill, Leo, Carl and Leonard; and sisters, Florence Sperl, Lillian Strate and Elizabeth Biornebera.
