Pine River

Violet Rice, age 91, of Pine River, passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008, at Whispering Pines Good Samaritan Center, Pine River. She was born Nov. 22, 1916, in Sherburn, Minn., to Louis and Nina Weseman.
She is survived by her children, Donna Eveland (Duane) of Backus, Harold Rice (Marsha) of Pine River, Helen Duncan of Howard Lake; daughter-in-law, Jan Rice of Barnesville; sisters, Viola Bradford of Auburn, Calif., Lauretta Krahmer (Roy) of Sherburn; 14 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin; sons, Bill and Tom; son-in-law, Gilbert Duncan; great-granddaughter, Molly Rice; three brothers; and one sister.

Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Kline Funeral Home, Pine River, with burial at the Mildred Cemetery, Backus.

Arrangements were with Kline Funeral Home, Pine River.

Kenneth W. Schuster

Pine River

Kenneth W. Schuster, 89, of Pine River, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008 at the Whispering Pines Good Samaritan Home in Pine River. He was born May 2, 1918, in Kentland, Ind., to William and Mary (Datzman) Schuster. The family moved to the Pine River area in 1919. He served in the Army from 1941-1945 in the European theater. Ken was a charter member of the American Legion #612. He married Doris Helm on June 17, 1950. They made Pine River their home. During this time Ken owned Ken's Super Market (23 years). He was a partner in Johnson Lumber (two years) and owned Coast to Coast (10 years). Ken was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, serving as an usher and council member. He was involved with the chamber of commerce and the city council. After retirement Ken and Doris spent 12 winters in Arizona until that was no longer an option.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William. He is survived by his wife, Doris, of 57 years; daughters, JoAnn (Duane) Hoefs of Pequot Lakes and Janice (Jim) Terwilliger of Pillager; son, Thomas of Brainerd; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sister, Donna (Derald) Watson of Brainerd; brothers, Arthur of Pine River and Raymond of Hastings; two sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

Services were 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pine River with Father Bruce Engen officiating. Burial followed at Pine Ridge Cemetery, Pine River. Visitation was Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. at Kline Funeral Home, Pine River, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements were with Kline Funeral Home, Pine River.

William Victor LeFebvre

Pine River

William Victor LeFebvre, 81, of Pine River, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, at Good Samaritan Home in Pine River.
He was born on Nov. 27, 1926, in Elk River, Minn., to Joseph and Melvina (Collette) LeFebvre. Bill was an avid hunter. He enjoyed shooting trap, bowling, snowmobiling and, most importantly, spending time with his family.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alveda and Donald; sisters, Marian Jacobs, Agnes Hopkins and Lillian "Ding" Gmach; and granddaughter, Elly Rose Lundrigan.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elaine; daughters, Renee' (Tom) Walters of Pine River, Cheryl (Ted) Lundrigan of Pine River, Pam (Mark) Wolf of Aberdeen, S.D., Colette (Ben) Macbeth of Warren, Pa., and Camille (Brian) Johnsen of Sauk Rapids; sons, Brad (Violet) of Pine River, and Todd (Barb) of Lompoc, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Duane (Faye) of California and Kenton (Harriet) of Elk River; sisters, Frances Leger of Duluth, and Joan LeFebvre of Minneapolis.

A memorial Mass for Bill was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2008, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pine River. Arrangements were with the Kline Funeral Home, Pine River.

Ardyth M. "Ardie" Muenchow

Backus

Ardyth M. "Ardie" Muenchow, age 71, of Backus. Ardie was a Christian who lived in Minnesota all of her life (10/27/36-2/1/08), including Minneapolis, Hibbing, St. Paul, Shakopee and Backus (Sanborn Lake). Ardie was a people person. She was employed in several caring positions throughout the years, including St. Paul's Jehovah Lutheran Church, the Shakopee Chamber of Commerce, Shakopee schools, Scott County Community Action Agency, and the Bloomington Minnesota Masonic Home. Ardie was extremely skilled in needlework, crafting and quilting fields. She willingly and generously shared her knowledge to all who surrounded her, of whom there were many.
A celebration of her loving life will be at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Hackensack on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour preceding the service and lunch following the service. Inurnment services will be held at a later date at Crystal Lake Cemetery, Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Minnie Glaesman.

She is survived by her husband, George; sons, Eric (Shakopee), Kurt (Shakopee), Todd and Tari (Monticello); a daughter, Kristen and Darrin Burdine (Veseli); four grandchildren; a brother, Robert and Joni Glaesman (Willmar); sisters, Ruth Doughty (Madison, Wis.), Karen and Charles Steele (Apple Valley).

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Arrangements are with Kline Funeral Home, Pine River.

Mary Louise DeMesy

Crosslake

Mary Louise DeMesy, 72, died Jan. 31, 2008. The world lost one of its most amazing women.
Born in Browns Valley, Minn., on Oct. 26, 1935, she was a most loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Mary leaves behind her wonderful husband, Duane "Hap"; her sons, Guy and Scott (Rita); daughter, Linda; grandchildren, Jaime, Jeff and Julia; mother-in-law, Mary; along with the hundreds of cousins, friends and family who cherish her so much.

Mary is preceded by her parents, Emil and Pauline Hedrick; brother, John; and father-in-law, Norman.

Mary was a registered nurse of 35 years at the VA Hospital of Minneapolis. Mary and Hap shared 51 beautiful years filled with joy, love, happiness and success. They traveled all over the world and have many great memories of Mary's fulfilled life she spent with all who knew her. She will be forever missed. We love you.

Memorial Mass will be Friday, Feb. 8, at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 13900 Biscayne Ave. W., Rosemount. Memorials preferred to Heartland Hospice. Private interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Charles Tessmann

Fifty Lakes

Charles Tessmann, age 80, formerly of Fifty Lakes, died Feb. 2, 2008, at Methodist Hospital in Minneapolis. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Crosslake with Father Mike Patullo officiating. Friends may visit at the church during the hour prior to Mass. Interment will be at Pine Ridge Cemetery in Emily.
Charles will be deeply missed by Deloris, his wife of 58 years; his daughters, Pam (Murray) Feldman, of St. Louis Park, and Diane (David) Schnelly, of Tampa, Fla.; his grandsons, Joel and Dan Feldman and Ben (Ally) Schnelly; and his great-grandson, Patrick Schnelly. His parents and a brother, Bob, preceded Chuck in death.

Services entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel of Crosslake.

Paul Wolf

Breezy Point

Paul Wolf, age 68, Breezy Point, longtime resident of Lakeville, made his transition Jan. 22, 2008.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Florence Wolf; granddaughter, Shawntay Davis; and his sister, Donna Stromberg.

Paul is survived by his wife, Edna (Armstrong); sons, Kevin (Karen) Wolf, Witchita Falls, Texas, and longtime residents of Breezy Point, Kelly Wolf, Paul (Lindsay Morrison) Wolf, Bloomington, Minn.; daughter, Jennie Davis, Laporte; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Paul will be deeply missed by family and many friends. A celebration of his life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 16 at Cremation of Minnesota in Edina. Memorials in lieu of flowers.

Daniel Olson

Pine River

Daniel David Olson, 69, of Pine River, passed away on Feb. 3, 2008, at his home. Arrangements are pending with Kline Funeral Home in Pine River.

Norman Hugo Sjoblad

Cloquet

Norman Hugo Sjoblad, 89, of Cloquet, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital. He was born in 1918 on the family farm in Esko. Norman was the youngest surviving child of 11 children and the only son born to Hugo and Sophia Sjoblad. He was a 1936 graduate of Lincoln High School in Esko and married Helen Marie Polley on Oct. 2, 1941.
Norman was employed in the accounting department of Northwest Paper/Potlatch and retired after 43 years of service. He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Cloquet, was an avid hunter and fisherman and served as the Thomson Township clerk for several years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 sisters.

Norman is survived by his wife, Helen of Pine River; his four children, David (Barbara) Sjoblad of Pequot Lakes, Susan (Dick) Mans of Fort Myers, Fla., Steve (Beth) Sjoblad of Edina and Mark (Cheryl) Sjoblad of Champlin; eight grandchildren, Ryan (Amy) Sjoblad, Jon (Bethany) Sjoblad, Melodie (Peter) Fox, Troy Trettel, Jon Trettel, Amy (Steve) LaBarre, Corey Sjoblad and Tucker Sjoblad; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Tuesday, Feb. 12 in the Fireside Room of Northland Funeral Home. Memorial Mass was at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Cloquet. Spring interment will be in New Calvary Cemetery, Cloquet.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Foundation, c/o Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet, MN 55720.

June Lach

Backus

June Lach, 86, Backus, died Sunday, March 3, 2008, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Pequot Lakes. Interment will follow at the Minnesota Veterans Cemetery near Camp Ripley. The relatives will receive friends from 11 a.m. 'til the time of services at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Pequot Lakes.
She is survived by four sons and one daughter; Royce Parker of Edina, Ron (Jeanette) Parker of Champlin, Robert (Pat) Parker of Tempe, Ariz., Joyce Parker of Torrence, Cal., Leon (Donna) Parker of Bowling Green, Ken.; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Peter, one sister and one brother.

She was born on April 5, 1921 in Minot, North Dakota, daughter of the late Benjamin and Lottie Taylor. She moved to Minneapolis. She was united in marriage to Peter Lach. She raised her five children in Minneapolis. She worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Minneapolis until her retirement. She moved to Backus then spent part of the year in Westpoint, Wash. She enjoyed drawing, painting, volunteering clown and Santa. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

Roy Schafer

Crosslake

Roy G. Schafer, 88, of Crosslake, died peacefully in his sleep early Thursday morning, Feb. 28, 2008. Services for Roy were at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at Crosslake Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark Anderson officiating. Friends gathered one hour prior to services at the church.
Roy was born Aug. 9, 1919, in Altura, Minn., the son of Herman and Elsie (Bittner) Schafer. He grew up and attended school in the Altura area. After his schooling he helped on the family farm and drove Rochester city bus at night. It was on his bus route he met and eventually married Lillian Lindquist on May 29, 1953, in Kasson, Minn. Roy and Lillian were able to share more than 54 years of marriage together. After their marriage he went to work for Kepp Company installing underground cable in the upper Midwest. In his spare time he continued to work the farm near Utica, Minn. Roy was very proud to be a member of the 49ers Operating Engineers Union.

After retiring, Roy and Lillian moved to Crosslake and bought a home on the lake to spend the remainder of his years enjoying his favorite hobby, fishing. He was very active in Crosslake as president of the Game and Fish Club, serving as president of the local food shelf, working on the Planning and Zoning Commission, and serving on the Crosslake Lutheran Church council. Roy also took great pride in his garden, always saying, "If you can't eat it, don't plant it."

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Elsie; daughter, Linda; son, Loren; grandchildren, Preston, Logan and Sierra Schafer; sisters, Beatrice McDougal, Evelyn Andring and Beulah Campa.

Roy will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Lillian; children, Allen Schafer of Crosslake, Marlin (Mary Ellen) Schafer of Mosinee, Minn., and Lila Schafer of Vadnais Heights, Minn.; grandchildren, Jessica (Nate) Drexler, Tessa Schafer and Preston Ryder; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, McKenzie and Abigail Drexler; sisters, Violet Balk and Inez (Alton) Loppnow; and brothers, Orrin and Marvin (Jeanette) Schafer.

Robert "Bob" William Nelson Sr.

Hackensack

Robert "Bob" William Nelson Sr., age 81, of Hackensack, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008.
He was born March 27, 1926, in Litchfield, Minn. He lived in Cosmos and Litchfield. He graduated from Litchfield High School in 1944. After high school he served in the Army during World War II. He graduated from St. Cloud Teacher's College in 1950, where he also played basketball. On July 9, 1950, he married Eleanor Macklin in Litchfield. He taught and coached in Byron, Gaylord, Crosby-Ironton, and Inver Grove Heights. He retired in 1980, and moved to live permanently at the cabin that he built on Portage Lake, in Hackensack.

He enjoyed many years of hunting, fishing, wild ricing, maple syruping, wood working, and following his son Bob's basketball teams. Trips to Canada fishing, especially one with his children and grandchildren, pheasant hunting with his friends, and two trips to China with Ellie were highlights in recent years.

Bob was the only son of Bill and Hilda Nelson. He was husband to Ellie, and dad to Terry, Bob (Betsy), Marybeth (Keith), Becky (Randy), and Eric. He was grandpa to Isaac, Owen, Adam (Carrie), Britt, Molly (Erik), Ellie, Levi and Ben, and great-grandpa to Trey and Ty. He was brother-in-law to Phoebe (Randy) Vosbeck, Mary Jones, John Macklin, and Judy Macklin and "Uncle Bob" to many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters-in-law, B.J. Macklin and Jean (Gail) Johnson; and brothers-in-law, Ken Jones and Bill (Becky) Macklin.

He will be remembered as a generous, giving person who always had time for others. Everyone he met he wanted to know where they were from, what they did, and "do you know so-and-so," making connections with all. He spent time helping at Union Congregational Church and building homes for Habitat for Humanity.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 7, at the Union Congregational Church in Hackensack. The Rev. Michael Small will officiate. Memorial donations may go to a basketball scholarship or the Hackensack Area Hospice House. Arrangements with Kline Funeral Home, Pine River.
