Braydon Lee Portner of Coal Valley, Ill., was delivered stillborn
at 21 weeks at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island, Ill.
He was the son of Lonnie and Jodi (Willmes) Portner of Coal Valley, formerly of
Metropolis, Ill. There will be no public service held. Trimble Funeral Rome, Coal Valley, is
handling the arrangements.
Braydon's survivors include his parents and brother, Bradley Portner of Coal Valley; maternal grandparents, Loren and Julia Willmes of Metropolis; and paternal grandparents, Dave and Darlene Portner of New Ulm.

Rita M. Schultz, 80, of Springfield, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at St. John's Lutheran Home, Springfied.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Springfield, with burial in St, Raphael's Catholic Cemetery, Springfield
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield. There will be a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, and a CCW Rosary at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church
She is survived by sons, Douglas and wife Mary Ann Schultz of Gurnee, Ill., Michael and wife Clare Schultz of Cottage Grove, Daniel and wife Lorri Schultz of Radcliffe, KY; six grandchildren, and a sister, Catherine and husband Jack Crain of Morton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Melvin Schultz in 1978, and sisters, Marie Gatzka and Celestine Holtermann.
She was born Oct. 26, 1920 in Springfield to Frank and Kate (Cassidy) Gatzka. She attended and graduated from Springfield High School in 1938, after which she worked in Chicago and Minneapolis, before marrying Melvin Schultz at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield on Oct.2, 1963. They made their home in Springfield, where Rita raised her family until Melvin's death in 1978, after which she volunteered many years as school secretary at St Raphael's School. Rita was a lifetime member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church, and served as parish council secretary for a number of years.

Pearl K. Pankratz, 96, of Springfield, died on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Springfield, with burial in Springfield City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield and continuing one hour prior to church service Wednesday.
She is survived by sons, Roy Pankratz of Springfield, Clifford and Rosie Pankratz of Springfield, Andrew and Janice Pankratz of Bloomington and David and Vicki Pankratz of Shoreview; daughters, Elise and Russell Norcutt of Lompoc, Calif., Irene and LuVerne Poitter of New Ulm and Marlene and Roger Barnes of Mankato; 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Doris Dorsett; a son and daughter in infancy; three brothers; and three sisters.
She was born on Sept. 25, 1904, to Emil and Bertha (Redman) Gramse in Albany. She moved with her parents to St. Paul when she was 8 years old, attending school there and later graduating from Globe Business College in St. Paul. She worked as a secretary at R.J. Dunn Company until she married Leo Pankratz on June 27, 1925 in St. Paul. The couple lived near Springfield where Pearl helped on the fur farm. Pearl entered St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield in 1999. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Springfield.

Hillard A. Dehning, 73, of rural Henderson, died on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at his home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Arlington, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Kolden-Fenske Funeral Home in Arlington, with a prayer service at 8 p.m., and continuing one hour prior to the service at the church.
He is survived by special friend, Lucille Mathowich of Springfield; daughters, Barbara and Ellerd Mathwig of Henderson, Linda and David Perkins of Littleton, Colo., and Christie Dehning of Duluth; son, jeffrey Dehning of Henderson; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothea and Gene Ernst of Watsonville, Calif., Evelyn Heuer of Waconia, and Evangeline and Harold Bade of Arlington; and sisters-in-law, Catherine Lepel of Eagan and Ruth Johnson of Alexandria.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; brother, Clarence; and sisters, Alice Rolf, Irene Dehning and Adeline Karg.
Hillard was born on Jan. 13, 1928, to Henry and Emma (Brelje) Dehning in Helen Township, rural Glencoe. After attending St. John's Parochial School in Helen Township for eight years, he started farming in the late 1940s in Jessenland Township, Sibley County. He married Elaine Lepel on April 27, 1941, in Plato. He was a member of National Farmers Association, American Guernsey Cattle Club and the Minnesota Guernsey Association.

Helen Christensen, 80, of Redwood Falls and formerly of Wabasso, died on Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Redwood Falls Area Hospital.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Wabasso, with burial at 1:30 p.m. in the Redwood Falls Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday with a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. at Nelson-Martin Funeral Home in Redwood Falls, continuing for one hour prior to the Mass Wednesday.
She is survived by sons, Thomas J. and Sandy Christensen of Las Vegas, N.V., and Robert and Donna Christensen of Lucan; daughters, Mary Kay and Nick Welu of Wabasso and Sue Ann Christensen of Las Vegas, Nev.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and brother, Alan McCorquodale of Morton.
She was preceded in death by her husband; brother, James McCorquodale; and sister, Kathleen Robinson.
She was born on Oct. 19, 1920, to Allen David and Rose (Yonietz) McCorquodale in Redwood County. She lived in Delhi until 1932 when she moved to Morton where she graduated from Morton High School. She married Julius R. Christensen in Morton on Nov. 18, 1941. The couple lived and farmed north of Wabasso until 1951 and then west of Wabasso until 1976 when they partially retired from farming and moved to Wabasso. She continued to live in Wabasso after her husband's death until 1998 when she moved to Redwood Falls. She was a past member of the St. Anne's Catholic Church in Wabasso, a current member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Redwood Falls. She was a former member of the Wabasso Progress Club. She also volunteered at Wabasso Public Library.

Doris Kleinsmith, 94, of Clarendon Hills, Ill., formerly of New Ulm, died Sept. 3, 2001, at her home.
Services were held in Illinois with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Firle Funeral Home of New Ulm handled the arrangements.
She is survived by one son, Gary Kleinsmith: 101 Lake Hinsdale Drive (No. 411) Willow Brook, Illinois 60527-2234.
Her husband Ray died in 1979.

Roman Zwach, 87, of Wabasso, formerly of Milroy, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, in Redwood Area Hospital.
Mass of Christian burial is 10:30 a.m.. Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Milroy with burial in the church cemetery with military rites by Milroy American Legion Post 274.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday and continues Friday, one hour prior to services at the St. Michael's Catholic Church in Milroy. A parish prayer service is at 7 p.m. Thursday followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary in the church.
The Sunset Funeral Home of Echo is handling arrangements.

Darlene Thorson, 62, of Butterfield, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at her home.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in rural Odin with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Thursday at Bjerum Funeral Home in Mountain Lake.
She is survived by her husband, Milo Thorson of Butterfield; daughters, Jacqueline Freitag and her partner, Leroy Fischer of Litchfield, and Wanda Fischer and her husband, Larry of Grove City; two grandsons; sister, Donna Dommer of Aroma Park, Ill.; brother, Darnell Stage and his wife Bonnie of Tower; sisters-in-law, Audrey Stage of Grand Rapids, and Lucille Stage of Sleepy Eye; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Brian Lepsey; sister, DeLores Weise; and brothers, Harold Stage and Victor Stage.
She was born Dec. 8, 1938, to Herman and Emma (Dehne) Stage in Cobden. She received her education in Cobden. On Feb. 26, 1971, she married Milo Thorson in Brookings, S.D. They lived in the Butterfield area. She helped her husband at his service station until it closed, and then she worked at several area businesses. She was a member of the VFW Legion Auxiliary.

Ronald A. Rich, 56, of New Prague, died Sept. 15, 2001, at Queen of Peace Hospital in New Prague.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pax Christi Catholic Church, Eden Prairie.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Bruzek Funeral Home, New Prague, and continues 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
He is survived by wife, Mary Pat Devney-Rich; children, Jeffrey and wife Jodi Rich of Buffalo, Jason Rich of Montgomery, Jennifer Rich of St. Peter, Holly A. Holets of savage, Nason and wife Katherine Holets of Lonsdale, Dan Holets of Denver, Katie Holets of Minneapolis; father, James Rich of New Ulm; father-in-law, Kenneth Devney of Mankato; brother and sister-n-law, Myron and Rosemarie Rich of New Ulm; sister, Patricia Suydam of Cuba, Ill.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son, Andrew at birth; mother, Edith Rich in 1998; and his first wife, Donna in July 1995.
He was born May 20, 1945, in Northwood, N.D., to James and Edith (Nygaard) Rich. He married Donna Nelson on April 8, 1967 in Butterfield. He married Mary Pat Devney on May 3, 1997.
He lived with his family in Hope, Jamestown and Cooperstown, N.D. In 1958, his family moved to Sleepy Eye and to New Ulm in 1962. He graduated from Sleepy Eye High School in 1963. He worked for General Trading Company in New Ulm from 1967-70 and Green Giant/Senca. He operated Ron's Handy Home Service and also R&H Builders. He moved to Montgomery and then to New Prague.

Hedwig Seifert, 105, formerly of 421 S. State S. in New Ulm died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001 at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye.
Mass of Christian burial is 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation is 5-6 p.m. Friday at Divine Providence Community Chapel in Sleepy Eye. There will be a combined society rosary starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday which will be followed by a parish prayer service at St. Mary's Catholic Church, in New Ulm.
Visitation continues at 10 a.m. until time of service on Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, in New Ulm.
Arrangements are handled by Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.
He is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. James R. and Jane Seifert of New Ulm, Dr. Richard and Carmen Seifert of Fargo, N. D.; daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Bernard Reichel of Santa Monica, Calif.; sister, Mrs. Bernice Manderfeld of Springfield; sister-in-law, Mrs. Myra Dempsey, of New Ulm; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond Henle, on April 4, 1921; her second husband, Dr. Otto J. Seifert, on Feb. 19, 1964; sons, Joseph Seifert on Jan. 9, 1929, and Captain Otto J. Seifert, Jr. on May 13, 1943; daughters, Muriel Seifert, on Jan. 22, 1994 and Dorothy Savchuck on Oct. 22, 1998, her parents; brothers, Ben, Alois, and Rudolph Marti; and sisters, Sister Rudolphis Marti and Linda (Mrs. Roy) Gordier.
She was born on June 14, 1896, in West Newton Township, Nicollet County, to Rudolph and Mary (Huelskamp) Marti. She attended Holy Trinity Grade School in New Ulm, Good Counsel Academy in Mankato, and St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing in Chicago. On May 5, 1920, she married Raymond Henle at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm. After his death, she married Dr. Otto J. Seifert on May 15, 1922 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm, St. Mary's Catholic Aid Society, St. Monica's Society, American Legion Auxiliary, the Gold Star Mothers, a Gray Lady for the American Red Cross for 25 years, a charter member of the Loretto Hospital Auxiliary, chairperson of the first coffee shop at Loretto Hospital, Catholic Daughters of America, the New Ulm Medical Center Auxiliary, Junior Pioneers, Turner Hall, Brown County Historical Society, and the Senior Citizens of New Ulm. She had been a resident of the Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye since 1994.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the St. Mary's Parish, Way of the Cross, Brown County Historical Society, New Ulm Area Catholic Schools or Father Alexander Berghold Memorial.

Irene Stoppelmann, 93, of Belle Plaine, died on Monday, Sept. 17, 2001 at The Lutheran Home, Belle Plaine.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John Lutheran Church, Belle Plaine with burial at Oakwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the church Thursday.
She is survived by her sister, Elsie of Belle Plaine; sister-in-law, Anna of Belle Plaine; 5 nieces; 2 nephews; great and great great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers, Frank, Fred, and Walter; sisters-in-law, Alice and Marion Stoppelmann, and nephew, Howard Stoppelmann.
She was born Oct. 18,1907 in Blakeley Township, Scott County to William and Emma (Domke) Stoppelmann. She worked at The Lutheran Home as a cook for 18 years and worked several summers for Green Giant. She was a life-long member of St. John Lutheran Church.

Elda M. Kassuelke, 84, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at St Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Mankato. Services are 2 p.m. Thursday in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation are 4-7 p.m. today at Mankato Mortuary and one hour before services at the church on Thursday.
Memorials may be given to Immanuel- St. Joseph's Hospice.
She is survived by sons, Gregory Kassuelke and his fiancee Janice Koehler of Bay Port, Douglas Kassuelke and his wife Sally of North Mankato; daughter, Janice Jordan and her husband, John of Kasota; seven grandchildren; brother, Raymond, Kuester of New Ulm; nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Steven; a brother and two sisters.
She was born Oct. 7, 1916, to Albert and Alvina (Becker) Kuester in Courtland. She married Leander F. Kassuelke on June 27, 1940, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. She worked at Mid-Tex, the Burton Hotel and Ben Franklin in Mankato. She was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Mankato.

Mass of Christian burial is 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Milroy with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday and continues Friday one hour prior to services at the church. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Thursday in the church followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary.
Military rites will be conducted by the Milroy American Legion Post 274.

He is survived by son, Larry of Walnut Grove; daughter, Aisleen Benda and her husband Jim of St. Louis Park; grandchildren, Joel and Joshua; sisters Emma VanKuelen of Marshall and Carol Kesteloot and her husband Vic of Marshall; brothers, Harry Zwach and his wife Louise of Marshall, Paul Zwach and his wife Bernice of Tracy, and Robert Zwach and his wife Doris of Milroy.
He was preceded in death by his wife Rita on June 25, 1993; brothers, Joe, John, and Henry; and sisters, Elsie Schloegel and Rose Fischer.
He was born April 4, 1914 in Gales Township, Redwood County, Minnesota to Joseph and Barbara (Hammerschmidt) Zwach. He graduated from Milroy High School in 1932. He attended the University of Minnesota, St. Paul Campus, before returning home to farm. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II. On Nov. 20, 1946, he married Rita Logue in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tracy. They farmed until retiring in 1985 and moving to Milroy. He entered the Wabasso Health Care Center in 1996. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Milroy, where he served on the building committee. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Milroy American Legion. He was mayor of Milroy.
