Helen Saffert, Sister of the Living Word, died peacefully at Resurrection Life Center in Chicago, Ill. on April 5, 2002, after suffering with Alzheimer's disease for several years.
Born in Blue Earth, on May 20, 1918, she was the third of six children. Preceded in death be her parents Julia (Reinhart) and John Saffert, brother Leo, and sisters Edna and Marie. She is survived by her brother Stanley (and Donna) Saffert of Burnsville; and her sister Roselyn (and Lloyd) Haggbloom of Bonita Springs, Fla.; sister-in-law Marjorie (Leo) Saffert of New Ulm; many nieces and nephews and the members of her religious community. Helen would have celebrated her 84th birthday in May.
After graduating from high school, Helen entered the Sisters of Christian Charity on August 13, 1936. She made her first profession in 1939 and began her fifty-year career in education as a teacher and administrator. Her first missions were in Michigan at St. Mary Magdalen, Hazel Park and St. Elizabeth, Detroit and then in Illinois at St. Raphael and St. Gregory High School. In 1954 she was assigned to Gahlen High School in LeMars, Iowa, where she was superior, principal, and teacher until 1965. Helen then returned to the Motherhouse in Wilmette to become Directress of Novices, Dean of the College and teacher. After a one-year stint at Helene High School in Sioux City, Iowa she moved to her hometown of New Ulm, as principal of Cathedral High School. After five years in that position she chose to join the Sisters of the Living Word and served on the Leadership Team for one year. In 1976 she returned to Sioux City, Iowa and stayed for 18 years where she ministered as principal of St. Boniface School and eventually retired to do volunteer work.
Imprinted on the memory of the Community is Helen's ready, hearty laugh, a Saffert trait we are told. Her sisters will also remember her as a principled and passionate member who was committed and involved in decisions that affected her life. She was grounded in a deep love for God expressed in her life of generous service.

Cynthia Macklenburg, 56, of Echo and formerly of New Ulm, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at the Valley View Manor in Lamberton.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with burial in the Echo City Cemetery in Echo at 2 p.m. Monday. Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Sunday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm, and will continue for one hour prior to the time of the service at the church on Monday.
Cynthia is survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol and Charles Eckstein of Sleepy Eye, and Connie and Bill Smith of New Ulm; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Delbert and Janice Macklenburg, and David and Joan Macklenburg all of rural Echo; also by nine nephews, and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Daniel Macklenburg, on June 12, 1997.
Cynthia was born July 25, 1945, in New Ulm to Louis and Ann (Harms) Cordes. She attended St. Paul's Lutheran School and New Ulm Public School. On August 21, 1976, she married Daniel Macklenburg at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. After marriage they farmed in rural Echo until her husbands death in 1997. She then resided in various care faculties and had been a resident of the Valley View Manor in Lamberton since January of 2002. She was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Echo.

George M. McWilliams, 81, of Redwood Falls, died Friday, April 5, 2002 at Redwood Area Hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Redwood Falls, with burial in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Sunday with prayers at 6:30 p.m. at Nelson-Martin Funeral Service, Redwood Falls.
He is survived by his wife, Janet McWilliams of Redwood Falls; son Terry McWilliams of Prior Lake; daughter Colleen McWilliams Wier of Plymouth; and four grandchildren.
He was born Feb. 23, 1920 in Sleepy Eye to Frank and Clara (Prokosch) McWilliams. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Tina Muller, 99, of New Ulm, and formerly of Gibbon, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Augustana Lutheran Church in Gibbon, with burial in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Visitation will be 9 - 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Augustana Lutheran Church in Gibbon. Arrangements are with the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Gibbon.
She is survived by her daughter Deppy Johnson of Minnetonka; son, Dr. Jerome Muller of New Ulm; five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
She was born April 11, 1902, in Blooming Prairie, to Trond and Maren (Wangseng) Rye.

Fred Ankrum, 90, of Springfield, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at the Springfield Medical Center.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Springfield, with burial in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Springfield.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today and 7:30-9 a.m. Wednesday at Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield. Visitation continues one hour prior to services the church on Wednesday.
He is survived by his wife Hilda of Springfield; son Roger Ankrum of Luck, Wis.; daughter Diane Rode and Hammond, Wis.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Jack Ankrum of St. Paul; and sisters, Pearl Drake and Eva Broderich.
Fred Ankrum was born Oct. 11, 1911, to Roy and Amanda (Gannett) Ankrum.

Elizabeth (Liz) Tersteeg, 71, of Blomkest-Roseland, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at her home.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and 9:15-10:15 a.m. Saturday at the Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia.
She is survived by her husband Jack; daughters, Terri Tersteeg-Peterson, Kathi Weinzetl, Barb Frank, Patty Tersteeg, Marilyn Birkland and Kari Chase; son Joe Tersteeg; 12 grandchildren; and brothers, Henry Scheibel, and Dr. Robert Scheibel.
Elizabeth Tersteeg was born March 5, 1931, to Egwin and Bertha Scheibel in rural Bird Island.

Beatrice Omtvedt, 82, of Belview, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at the Parkview Home in Belview.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church in Belview, with a private family burial in Hendricks at a later date.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday at the church.
Arrangements are with the Redwood Valley Funeral Home in Redwood Falls.

Orval H. Fiemeyer, 81, of Ridgeway on German in New Ulm and formerly of Courtland, died Sunday, April 7, 2002, at the St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm.
There will be no visitation or reviewal. The Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm is handling the arrangements.
Orval is survived by his wife, Helen of New Ulm; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Lyle Zupan of Madison; a son, Allan "Butch" Fiemeyer of Courtland; grandsons and their wives, Brian and Sharilyn Zupan of Roy City, Texas, Brent and Sharla Zupan of Madison, and Bruce and Kim Zupan of Prior Lake; great-grandchildren, Timothy, Thomas and Tara Zupan of Madison and Taylor and Jordan Zupan of Prior Lake; brothers and sisters-in-law, Armin "Buddy" Fiemeyer, a resident of the Veterans Home in Minneapolis, Marvin and Katherine Fiemeyer of Pine River, and Duane "Duke" and Marjorie Fiemeyer of Courtland.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Orval was born Aug. 10, 1920, in Courtland Township, Nicollet County, to Armin and Stella (Ginkel) Fiemeyer. He married Helen Drexler on Aug. 30, 1941, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church Rectory in New Ulm. After marriage they lived in Courtland where Orval owned and operated the Fiemeyer Service Station for 43 years until his retirement. After retiring he worked part time at Supersweet in Courtland. They moved to Ridgeway on German in New Ulm in 1999. He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm, the Courtland Fire Department for 22 years, and was a member of the Courtland City Council for 18 years.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to the donors choice.

Robert J. 'Bob' Ludewig, 55, of Loveland, Colo., died Monday, April 8, 2002, at his home.
Mass of Christian burial is 1 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church in Loveland.
Burial will be in Peachtree City, Ga.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home in Loveland.
Memorials can be made to Hospice of Larimer County, Fort Collins, Colo.
He is survived by his wife, Donna M. Ludewig of Loveland; son, Keith Ludewig of Newnan, Ga.; daughter, Shanna Ludewig of Arlington, Tenn; two grandchildren; brothers, Leo Ludewig of Comfrey, Donald Ludewig of Sleepy Eye; sisters, Betty Doran of Everly, Iowa and Linda Braulick of New Ulm.
He was born Aug. 6, 1946, in Sleepy Eye to Vetalis and Emma (Treml) Ludewig.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.

Warren Martin Stellmacher, former host for KARE 11 Warren Martin Stellmacher, 70, of Plymouth, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, in Plymouth.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel, W. 50th Street and Highway 100.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday and one hour before the service.
Memorials are preferred to the Minneapolis Public Library.

Melvin 'Mel' William Krueger, 76, of Springfield, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Springfield with burial in the city cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today and 7:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday at Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield and continues one hour before the service at the church.
He is survived by his wife, Lenore Krueger of Springfield; son, James Krueger of Springfield; daughter, Jolene Schwartz of Springfield; three grandchildren; and a sister, Lucille Polzin of Windom.
He was born June 2, 1925, in Burnstown Township, Brown County, to William and Lilly (Stark) Krueger.

Raymond 'Ray' Duscher, 92, of Redwood Falls, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Wood Dale Nursing Home in Redwood Falls.
Mass of Christian burial is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Redwood Falls with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday and continues Saturday one hour prior to services at the church. There will be a parish prayer service Friday at 7 p.m. at the church. Sunset Funeral Home of Echo is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife Geraldine; children, Phyllis Hennen of Shakopee, Shirley Redmann of Redwood Falls, Warren Duscher of Wichita, Kansas, Donna Reding of Morgan, Steven Duscher of Appleton, Wis., and Thomas Duscher of Englewood, Colo.; 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Rosella Malecha of Redwood Falls, Norma Honzay of Olivia, William Duscher of Lucan, Maryann Donner of Spicer, James Duscher of Sleepy Eye, and Delores Hartwig of Mankato.
He was born Thursday, August 26, 1909, in Redwood Falls, Minnesota to William and Mary (Welter) Duscher.

Lloyd Dallmann, 82, of 1025 Center Street in New Ulm, died, Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Fairfax. Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the Fairfax Honor Guard.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the time of the service at the church on Saturday.
Lloyd is survived by his wife, Lilly Dallmann of New Ulm; daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Paul Guttum and Beverly and Neil Schmidt, all of New Ulm, Sandra and Bill Moorehead of Portland, Oregon, and Carol and Tom Sandman of Fort Collins, Colorado; a son and daughter-in-law, Galen and Kay Dallmann of New Ulm; eleven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; by seven nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, June Dallmann of Fairfax; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Roger and Joyce Wolling of Fairfax; and a brother-in-law, Clifford Fluck of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter, Linda Dallmann in 1953; a brother, Glenn Dallmann in 1996; and a sister-in-law, Orda Fluck.
Lloyd was born November 22, 1919, in Bandon Township, Renville County to Emil and Geline (Koester) Dallmann. He attended country school in Bandon Township, Renville County and later the St. John's Lutheran School in Fairfax. He enlisted in the United States Army serving during World War II. On September 14, 1945, he married Lilly Woldengen at the Franklin Zion Lutheran Parsonage in rural Franklin. After marriage they lived in Fairfax and he was a partner with a tiling company. They then moved to rural Fairfax where they farmed for nine years, and then he worked for the International Mineral and Chemical Company in rural Fairfax for 12 years.
In 1969 he started working for AMPI in New Ulm as a butter printer until he retired in 1984. He played Legion Baseball in Fairfax and enjoyed watching his grandchildren play baseball. He also enjoyed visiting with his family and friends. He had been a resident of the Oak Hills Living Center for five days.
He was a member of the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, a former member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Fairfax where he had served on various boards. He was also a member of the VFW in Fairfax.

Norma Omtvedt, 81, of Belview, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, in Belview.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church, Belview, with burial in Hansonville Cemetery, Hendricks.
Visitation is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the church.
Redwood Valley Funeral Home handled arrangements.
She is survived by her children, Mary Erickson of California, Marjorie Stutelberg of Willmar, Karen Donner of Clarkfield and Rolf Omtvedt of Belview; 25 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marjorie Fulton.
She was born Dec. 31, 1919, to Lewis and Marie Nelson in Hansonville Township, Lincoln County.

Curtis C. 'Curt' Brand, 60, of 905 North Washington Street in New Ulm died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm. Full military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm Veterans Organizations.
Visitation will be 3-9 p.m. Friday and 7:30-11 a.m. Saturday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. The St. Joseph's Catholic Aid Council will pray the rosary at 6:30 p.m., and there will be a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Curtis is survived by his wife, Judy Brand of New Ulm; a daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Lee McConnell of New Brighton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Phyllis and Gene Schmitz, Marlys Drill, and Joleen and Warren Jorgensen, all of New Ulm, LaDonna Kissner and Doris and Wesley Guemmer, all of St. Cloud, and Carol and Jim Krueggel of Winthrop; brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Myrtle Brand, David Brand, and Robert and Lucille Brand, all of New Ulm, Kenneth Brand of Glenview, Illinois, and Marvin Brand of St. Peter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Diane Carley; and by brothers, Lowell and Gerald Brand.
Curtis was born November 4, 1941, in New Ulm to Joseph and Sophia (Kuehn) Brand. He attended Catholic school in New Ulm and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1962. After graduation he served in the United States Army from January 1964 to January 1966. After his discharge he worked for Donahue Sanitation in New Ulm. He married Judy Gillick on July 3, 1970, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. Curt and Judy owned and operated Brand's Sanitation that they started together in 1975. Curtis was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, the St. Joseph's Catholic Aid Council, and the Seifert Bianchi American Legion Post 132 in New Ulm.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to New Ulm Area Catholic Schools.

Eliza Schultz, 93, of Worthington, formerly of Westbrook, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at the Crossroads Care Center, Worthington.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, Westbrook, with burial in the Westbrook Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday at Westbrook Funeral Home and Saturday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
