Fr. Gerald Hillesheim, 60, of Fairfax, formerly of Minneota, died March 14, 2003, at Methodist Hospital in Rochester.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 21, 2003, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, with Bishop John C. Nienstedt officiating. Burial will be at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs Cemetery in Leavenworth.
Visitation will be 3 - 8 p.m. Thursday at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth, and 8 a.m. - 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. There will be a 4 p.m. Rosary and a 7 p.m. prayer service, both Thursday the the Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth.
Gerald Arthur Hillesheim, the son of Raymond and Odelia (Huiras) Hillesheim was born June 10, 1942, in Sleepy Eye. He was baptized by Father Michael, and grew up on the family farm in Leavenworth Township. He attended country school District No.12, and Japanese Martyrs School until the eighth grade. Gerald became a student at Nazareth Hall in St. Paul, attending school there for six years, before moving to St. Paul Seminary to complete the last six years of his education.
He was ordained to Subdeaconate on March 11, 1967, at the Basilica of St. Mary's in Minneapolis, and ordained to the Deaconate on June 3, 1967, at the Cathedral in St. Paul. Father Gerald was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Alphonse J. Schladweiler at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm on March 9, 1968. His First Solemn Mass was held on March 10, 1968, at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth. He became assistant priest at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted, serving there for 13 years, after which he became pastor at St. George Catholic Church in St. George, and taught at Cathedral High School in New Ulm.
Father Gerald became pastor at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Minneota, St. Cyril's and St Methodius Catholic Church in Taunton, and St. Eloi Catholic Church in Ghent, serving those parishes until moving to Fairfax in June 2002. Father Hillesheim was pastor at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Fairfax, St. Willibrord's Catholic Church in Gibbon, and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Franklin, serving those parishes until his death.
Father Gerald's greatest love was his priesthood, being able to serve God's people. He was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan, holding season tickets for more than 30 years. He enjoyed fishing, especially at Lake of the Woods, hunting deer, family gatherings and taking pictures of the family, watching all sports, watching movies, playing board games, canning and cooking, especially making homemade soup, and being with people. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Knights of Columbus. Father Hillesheim had a great sensitivity to the grade and high school students and always had a positive attitude, and a smile for everyone.
Survivors include his mother Odelia Hillesheim of Springfield; sisters, Marion and husband Dwight McKenzie of Princeton, Barbara and husband Richard Filzen of New Ulm, and Bernadette and husband Thomas Kachelmeier of Sleepy Eye; brothers, Leonard "Lenny" Hillesheim of Sleepy Eye, and Daniel Hillesheim and Anthony Hillesheim of Springfield; 13 nieces and nephews; and 9 great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Raymond; a brother, Marvin; and a great-niece, Savannah Wroolie.

Gerald Dale Ockwig, 60, of rural Clements, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at St. John Lutheran in Springfield.
Services are 11 a.m., Saturday, March 22, at Redwood Valley Funeral Home in Redwood Falls. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Renville.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m., Friday at the funeral home and one hour before the services.

John Pfaender, 91, of St. Paul, died Sunday, March 16, 2003, at his home.
Memorial service will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2003, at Messiah Episcopal Church, (1631 Ford Pkwy.) in St. Paul.
John was born in New Ulm, on Oct. 30, 1911, to Albert and Marie Pfaender. He was a lifetime Minnesotan, having attended New Ulm High School and the University of Minnesota, graduating from the St. Paul College of Law (now William Mitchell) in 1939.
In 1943, he became Deputy Insurance Commissioner for the State of Minnesota, and it marked the beginning of a 54-year career in the insurance business.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1944, and served in the Quartermaster Corps at Camp Lee, Va., until 1946. After returning home, John started his private sector experience at the Anchor Casualty Company. In the early 1950s, John and several associates formed the Anchor Insurance Agency. He continued working there in several capacities, including president of the company for 10 years. In 1979, John started his own business, John Pfaender & Associates, an insurance consulting firm. He worked there for 18 years until his retirement in 1997.
He was a charter member and past president of the Minnesota CPCU, the professional organization for property casualty professionals.
In 1991, he was awarded the Minnesota Bar Association's Senior Certificate for having practiced law in Minnesota for 50 years.
John was an active member of many civic organizations, including president of St. Paul Goodwill Industries. He also served on the Boards of the Friends of the St. Paul Public Library, the Ramsey County Historical Society, the St. Paul Winter Carnival and the downtown St. Paul Rotary Club.
He was also a member of Town and Country Club, the Pool and Yacht Club and the Sigma Chi Fraternity at the University of Minnesota.
John was an avid historian. He authored two books, "The History of the Minnesota CPCU" and "The History of the Town and Country Club." He was also very interested and active in Civil War history because his grandfather, William Pfaender, was a colonel during the Civil War, the Commandant at Fort Ridgely and a President Lincoln elector.
John was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years Marian Orr Pfaender.
He is survived by one son, Jay A. Pfaender; his daughter-in-law Barbara; two grandchildren, Julie and Jack; his sister, Marion Pfaender Downs; and numerous friends and family.
John will always be remembered for his kindness and his gentlemanly manners.
Memorials are preferred to the Friends of the St. Paul Public Library or to the donor's choice.

Melvin A. Rekedal, 97, of Redwood Falls, died Sunday, March 16, 2003, at Wood Dale Nursing home in Redwood Falls.
Services are 1 p.m., Saturday, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls with burial in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is noon until time of service at the church.
Arrangements are handled by Nelson-Martin Funeral Service in Redwood Falls.
He is survived by sisters, Helma Hansvick of Belview, Ella Rekedal of Belview, Jeanelle Beskin of Baton Rouge, La.; brother, Harold Rekedal of Vesta.
He was born Sept. 29, 1905, in Granite Rock Township, Redwood County to Simon and Hilda (Dahl) Rekedal.

Larry Schmidtke, 61, of rural Trimont, died on Saturday evening, March 15, 2003, at Fairmont Medical Center-Mayo Health System in Fairmont.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, March 20, 2003, at the Waverly Lutheran Church in rural Trimont, with Rev. Nancy Linn officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 4 - 7 p.m. today at the Kramer Family Funeral Home in Trimont, and one hour prior to the services at the Church on Thursday.
Larry Ewald Schmidtke was born on Jan. 16, 1942, to Ewald and Alice (Westphal) Schmidtke on the home farm in Manyaska Township, Martin County. He was baptized and later confirmed at the Evangelical Church in Ceylon. He attended Ceylon High School. Larry drove truck over the years for Monterey Rendering, Blue Earth Rendering and most recently for Persson Grain Company of Trimont.
On March 27, 1975, he was united in marriage to Lois A. Wieneke at Waverly Lutheran Church in rural Trimont. After their marriage they lived on a farm in Galena and Waverly Township. Larry was a member of Waverly Lutheran Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed interacting with his children and was involved with his son Troy's Racing Team on the Fairmont and Jackson circuits. Larry enjoyed hunting and playing cards. He enjoyed his hobby farm and tinkering with everything on his farm.
Larry is survived by his wife Lois of rural Trimont; son Craig (C.J.) Schmidtke and his wife Marcia of New Ulm, and Troy Schmidtke and special friend Becky Flohrs of Trimont; daughter, Melissa Birr and her husband Steve of Mapleton, and Tanya Schmidtke and special friend Shannon of Trimont; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; mother and step father, Alice and Raymond Scheff of Ceylon; three sisters, Jean Vincent and her husband Delos of Faribault, Sandy Michels and her husband Allan of Chippewa Falls, Wis., and Jane Gordon of Lancaster, Calif.; sister-in-law her husband to Arlene Steen and her husband Ron of Englewood, Colo.; brothers-in-law, Jerome Wieneke and his wife Carol, and Frank Wieneke and his wife Deb, both of Adrian, Elmer Wieneke and his wife Judy, Jake Wieneke and his wife Theresa, Herman Wieneke and his wife Eileen, Ray Wieneke and his wife Shirley, and Carl Wieneke and his wife Roberta, all of Lismore, and Harold Wieneke and his wife Rhonda of Orlwein, Iowa; several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his father Ewald C. Schmidtke; and father- and mother-in-law Edward and Rose Wieneke; and other relatives.

Elmer Dyre, 77, of Culpeper, Virginia died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.
Funeral service is 11 a.m., Friday at the Fullerton Funeral Home in Mason City, Iowa, with burial in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.
Visitation will be 9 - 11 a.m., Friday at the Fullerton Funeral Home in Mason City. The Minnesota Valley Funeral Home is handling the local arrangements.
Elmer is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Barry and Susan Dyre of New Ulm, Steve Dyre of Mason City, Iowa, Tom and Georgia Dyre of Culpeper, Virginia, Mark and Linda Dyre of New Brighton; a sister, Iva Scarrow of Minneapolis; and a brother, Vi Dyre of Mason City, Iowa. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents.
Elmer was born July 12, 1925, in Mason City, Iowa, o Richard and Mary (Combs) Dyre. Elmer had a life-long interest in aviation. He was a pilot, and also worked as a flight instructor and managing several airports during his career. Elmer was vice president of State Bond & Mortgage Company in New Ulm in the 1960s. He was a life long member of the Masons.

Myron L. Havemeier, 67 of Gaylord, formerly of Fairfax, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, in rural Fairfax.
Services will be Friday, March 21, at 2 p.m., at the Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Fairfax. Interment will be in the Bethel Cemetery in Cairo Township, Renville County. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the funeral chapel on Friday.
Myron is survived by his wife, Shirley Havemeier of Gaylord; a daughter, Meta Millhone of St. Peter; sons, Michael Havemeier of Zimmerman, Ken Havemeier of Spearfish, S.D. and Kevin Havemeier of Lakeville, and four grandchildren
Myron Louis Havemeier was born May 22,1935, in New Sweden. He was the son on Herbert and Hazel (Martin) Havemeier.

Alice M. Wedge, 87, of St. James, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at her home.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2003 at St. James Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, St. James.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday and 7:30-10 a.m. Saturday at the Sturm Funeral Home, St. James.
She is survived by two daughters, Peggy Zender and Dianne Tetzloff, both of St. James; eight grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Mary Hintgen, Minora Wedge and Elaine Olsen.
She was born May 13, 1915 to George and Josephine (Barrett) Hintgen in St. James.

Harvey J. Marquardt, 83, of 715 South German Street in New Ulm died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11a.m., Monday, March 24, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm. Full graveside military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm veterans organizations.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Sunday and 7:3-10:30a.m., Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Harvey is survived by his wife, Dorothy Marquardt of New Ulm; daughter and son-in-law, Jane Downs of New Ulm and Dick Downs of St. James; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and June Marquardt of New Ulm, Steven and Lynn Marquardt of Eveleth, Paul and Caron Marquardt of Sartell; twelve grandchildren; five great-granddaughters; and a sister, Augusta Helwig of Hastings.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Allan Marquardt; a stillborn daughter; sisters, Violet Drusch, Alice Drusch, Mildred Polta, an infant sister Agnes; and a brother Orval Marquardt.
Harvey was born March 31, 1919, in Ridgley Township, Nicollet County to Edward and Phoebe (Lane) Marquardt. He married Dorothy Kahle on January 31, 1939, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. Harvey served in the Minnesota National Guard from 1937 to 1940. He served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1945 on the USS Eagle. He worked as a mechanic at various garages in the New Ulm area, as an ambulance driver for Martinka Ambulance Service and drove a bus for the New Ulm City Bus Service. Harvey retired in 1982.
He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic CHurch in New Ulm and the Seifert-Bianchi American Legion Post 132 in New Ulm.
Harvey enjoyed fishing, bingo, card playing, sports and telling jokes. Harvey's greatest joys in life were his grandchildren and family.

Rozina Vogl, 94, of New Ulm, Minnesota, and formerly of Dodge Center, Minnesota died, Tuesday evening, March 18, 2003 at New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.
Rozina was born July 23, 1908, the daughter of Johann and Rozalia (Kaipel) Knittel in Hungary. Rozina was united in marriage to Josef Vogl on November 6, 1932 in Yugoslavia. Rozina resided in the Milwaukee area for almost 30 years. She moved to Dodge Center in 1980, and moved to New Ulm in 2001. As a homemaker she enjoyed gardening and flowers.
Rozina is survived by one son, Johann and wife, Saimi Vogl, New Ulm, Minnesota; six nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Josef Vogl; infant son; 1 brother and 2 sisters.
Friends and family may call from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2003, at the Czaplewski Family Funeral Home in Dodge Center, Minnesota and one hour before the service at the church in New Ulm. The funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2003, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Reverend Robert D. Hines officiating. Interment will be in New Ulm City Cemetery.

Lucille R. Witt, age 84 of Winthrop, MN, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2003, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.
Funeral services will be Monday, March 24, 2003, at 11 a.m. Due to construction at First Lutheran Church, the funeral will be held at Peace Lutheran Church in Winthrop. Interment will be in the Winthrop Cemetery.
Visitation will be Sunday from 5 - 8 p.m. and Monday from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m., at the Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Winthrop. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the time of services at the church on Monday.
Lucille Ruth (Meffert) Witt was born January 5, 1919, in Arlington, MN. She was the daughter of Herman and Emma (Rischmiller) Meffert. Lucille graduated from Arlington Schools.
Lucille married Reuben Herman Witt on November 21, 1941, at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Arlington. The couple shared 57 years of marriage.
Lucille and Reuben farmed in Bismarck Twp., Sibley Co., for over 20 years, before moving into Winthrop. Lucille worked at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center as a nurses' aide and she also held employment at Green Giant in Winthrop and Glencoe. She also assisted her husband when he served as an assessor. When Lucille needed assistance with her daily care she became a resident at the Lafayette Good Samaritan Assisted Living in May of 2001.
In the past, Lucille was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Arlington, where she served as church organist. When residing in Bismarck Twp, she was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. After moving into Winthrop, she became a member of First Lutheran Church. She was active, in the past with the WELCA and she always sent birthday cards to the elderly members of the church. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, working crossword puzzles and loved growing flowers. Lucille proudly served as a Red Cross Blood Bank volunteer for 26 years.
Lucille was preceded in death by her: parents; husband, Reuben, on April 22, 1999; brothers, Alvin, William and Elmer Meffert; brothers-in-law, Melvin, William and Marvin Witt, Walter Stresemann and Vern Zimmerman; sisters-in-law, Meta Stresemann, Thusnelda Witt, Alice Witt, Mildred Meffert and Tillie Meffert.
Lucille is survived by her: son, Dale Witt and his wife, Mickey of New Ulm; daughter, Sharon Gardner and her husband, Jim of Albert Lea; four grandchildren, Robert Witt and his wife, Joy of Detroit Lakes, Lori Loomis and her husband, Mike of Hutchinson, Charles Witt and his wife, Tracey of Maple Grove and Mark Gardner of Coon Rapids; two great-grandchildren, Rachel Loomis and Tara Loomis; sister, Frieda Kosinski of Huntington Beach, CA; brother, Raymond Meffert of Arlington, MN and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Elaine Holten, 75, of Mankato, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at the Hillcrest Healthcare Center in Mankato.
Services are 3 p.m. Sunday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mankato and also 1 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is from 1:30-3 p.m. Sunday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mankato. Schmucker Funeral Service of New Ulm is handling arrangements.
She is survived by son Ben of Nicollet; sisters Marie Kuhlmann of Charter Oak, Iowa, Marceling Forbord of Benson; Shirley Christenson of Menomonie, Wisc., Karen Greene of Minnetonka; and brothers Herbert Greene of Edwardsburg, Mich., Kenneth of Tavares, Fla., Wayne Greene of Bristol, Ind., Walter of Glenwood, Loren Greene of Trot, Texas, Larry Greene of Annandale.
She was born on March 19, 1928, in Charter Oak, Iowa, to Herbert and Esther Greene.

Larry Eitel, 59, of Brownton, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at Glencoe Regional Health Services.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday, March 24, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Stewart, with burial in Round Grove Lakeside Cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Hughes Funeral Home, Stewart, and Monday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
He is survived by his wife, Susanne Eitel of Brownton; a daughter Shari Miller of Hutchinson; two grandchildren; his mother, Bernice of Stewart; a brother Jim of Stewart; and sisters Marjorie Streich of Stewart and Kathleen Klitzke of Aitkin.
He was born May 29, 1943 in Glencoe, to Albert and Bernice (Mueller) Eitel. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
