Willis 'Bill" Trible, 82, of St.Peter, formerly of New Ulm, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at the St. Peter Health Care Center.
Memorial services were held Tuesday at Mankato Mortuary Chapel, Mankato, with Rev. Pamela Serdar of Centenary United Methodist Church officiating. Interment at Glenwood Cemetery, Mankato. Arrangements are with Mankato Mortuary.
Mr. Trible was born Aug. 29, 1921, in Quinter, Kan., to George H. and Irene (Sprenger) Trible. He graduated from Quinter High School in 1939. He was in the U.S. Army during World War II, from September of 1942 to October of 1945. He served in the Aleutians, Rome-Arno, Rhineland and Central Europe.
Willis was united in marriage to Eunice E. Bonnell of Feb. 3, 1949, in Winfield, Kan. He began working for J.C. Penny Co. in his teens and continued working with them until 1966. He was a buyer for Pamida Discount Stores from 1966 until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of VFW in Denver, Colo. He enjoyed gardening and stamp collecting.
Willis is survived by his wife Eunice Trible; one son, Larry Trible of Shorewood; four daughters and their husbands, Pat and Dave Lohman of Forest City, Iowa, Jenny and Al Loquasto of Rosemount, Kathy and Lou Albrant of Anchorage, Alaska, and Carol and Brad Wellner of St. Peter; grandchildren, Shana, Rachel and Andrew Trible, Jason Lohman, DeAnn McClanahan, Kristin Mikes, Kelly Walston, Sarah Loquasto, Stacy and Bryan Wellner, and Cody and Brittney Wellner; honorary granddaughter Kyla Murphy; great-grandchildren, Wade and Austin Lohman, and Ashlynn Yokom; two brothers; three sisters; nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister; and two brothers.

Marian Johnson, 60, formerly of Lafayette, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at the state-owned group home in Warsaw.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 31, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm, with burial in the First Lutheran Cemetery in Lafayette. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the time of the service at the funeral home on Friday.
Marian is survived by her half-sister Rosalie Gasow of Glencoe; and half-brother Wallace Johnson of Lafayette.
Marian Johnson was born on July 4, 1943, in Lafayette to August C. & Maude (Hayes) Johnson.

Hulda Weber, 87, of Waukon, Wis., and formerly of New Ulm, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon.
Services are 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 30, at St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Eizten, Minn., with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 11 a.m. to noon Thursday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon and continues 1-2 p.m., Thursday at the church.
She is survived by brother, Robert Ring of New Ulm.
She was born July 19, 1916, in New Ulm, to William and Amanda (Berg) Ring.

Robert Miller, 82, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at his home.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, in the chapel of Lauferswieler-Sievers Funeral Home in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and 11 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church with Rev. Laurence Bruns officiating at the Mass of Christian burial. Burial will be in Corpus Christi Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 1856. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today at the funeral home, where there will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a vigil at 7 p.m.
Surviving is his wife Marie (Furth), formerly of New Ulm; sons, Randolph Miller and his wife Tresia of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Shadric Smith and his wife Debbie of Fort Dodge, Iowa; daughters, Theresa Schmitz of Cambridge, Mass., and Roberta Kutz and her husband Terry of Chemult, Ore; grandchildren, Tristan and Colby Smith, Jim and Leroy Kutz, and Caroline Chang; step-granddaughter Melissa McCrady and her husband Matt; great-grandson Matthew; and sister Mary Boyum of Rochester.
Robert was preceded in death by a son, Anthony; and two brothers, John and William.

Howard Heller, 90, of 1425 North Minnesota Street in New Ulm, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at the Lake City Hospital in Lake City.
Funeral Service will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 4, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Tuesday.
Minnesota Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Howard is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Norman Goodman of Rochester, Catherine and Marvin White of Mazeppa; seven grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Florella and James Helling of Mankato; sisters-in-law, Delores Heller of Mankato, and Mabel Heller of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Luella on December 25, 2001; sisters, Lily Winter, Lenora Voigt, and Mildred Macik; brothers, Eddie, Russell, Roy, Lloyd, Hjalmar, and Rueben Heller.
Howard was born on January 20, 1913, at Plaza, North Dakota, to Richard and Mary (Jacobson) Heller. On March 3, 1940, he married Luella C. Mueller. Howard worked at Kato Engineering from the early 1940s until retiring in 1973. He loved sports, attending all sporting events of the three New Ulm high schools. He and Luella enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling to various states including Branson, Missouri. He spent most of his time with his family and his terrier dog, Peppy. He was a member of the Gluck-N-Spiel Club, Kato Engineering Credit Union, and the local union of Kato Engineering.

Darwin 'Axel' Isaacson, 79, of Winthrop, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center.
Funeral services are 11.a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 4, at the First Lutheran Church in Lafayette with burial in the church cemetery at a later date.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m., today, and continues 7:30-8 a.m., Tuesday, at the Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Winthrop and one hour before services at the church.
He s survived by wife Lauretta Isaacson of Winthrop; son, Gary Isaacson of Winthrop; daughters, Donna Wendlandt of Litchfield, Ann Gieseke of New Ulm, Jan Larson of Gibbon; 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and brothers, Delmer Isaacson of Winthrop and Donald Isaacson of Missouri.
Darwin Henry "Axel" Isaacson was born July 18, 1924, in Lafayette Township, Nicollet County, Minn., to Henry and Hulda (Gustafson) Isaacson.

Ilse Bartels, 86, of New Ulm died Monday, November 3, 2003 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm with burial in the Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation will be from 1 - 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Ilse is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Renate and Henry "Hap" Raabe of New Ulm, Edna and Michael Haedike of Belle Plaine; son and daughter-in-law, Rudolf, Jr. and Rose Ann Bartels of Prior Lake; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rudolf Bartels, Sr. on March 6, 1981; two sisters; and two brothers.
She was born on Dec. 12, 1916, in Salder, Germany to Robert and Clara (Topp) Koechy. She married Rudolf Bartels on Jan. 27, 1939, in Hettensen, Germany. After marriage they lived in Hettensen, Germany. In 1956 they moved to New Ulm. She worked in the kitchen at Martin Luther College in New Ulm and later became head cook. She was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm.

Louis 'Louie' Dummer, 60, of 2526 South Bridge Street in New Ulm, died Sunday, November 2, 2003 at the St. Louis Park Plaza in St. Louis Park.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Thursday, November 6, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Louie is survived by his wife, Rosemary "Rosie" Dummer of New Ulm; daughters and son-in-law, Ila Dummer of St. Louis Park, Brenda and Jamie DeLeo of Eagan; son and daughter-in-law, Loren and Shannon Dummer of Waconia; grandchildren, Zack and Mollie Dummer, and MacKenzie DeLeo; sisters and brother-in-law, Rosanne Dummer, Luci and Paul Heuton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Willie and Mavis Dummer, James Dummer, Joel and Anna Dummer, Myron Dummer, Allan and Barb Dummer; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gerald and Arlene Hodapp, Lyle and Louise Hodapp; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister-in-law, Cheryl Dummer.
He was born on November 16, 1942, in New Ulm to Herbert and Rosella (Liebl) Dummer. He attended grade school in St. George and graduated from Fairfax High School. He married Rosemary Hodapp on October 17, 1964 in Mankato. He worked for the Community Co-op of Essig for 30 years in L.P. Gas, installing and repairing furnaces, air conditioners and corn dryers. He was also the "Blind Man" for Treat's (Formerly Keans) Home Center in New Ulm, installing all window treatments. Louie enjoyed making many woodworking projects and playing drums and the harmonica with the Cletus Goblirsch Band and the Northside Dutchmen as well as many other bands over the years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm, and a member of the Seifert-Bianchi American Legion Post 312 in New Ulm.
The family prefers memorials be given to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.

Monica Hahn, 73, of Marshall and formerly of Madelia, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at her home.
Services are 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 5, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Madelia,
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Pilgrim Funeral Home, Madelia with a rosary recited at 4:45 p.m. and a prayer service at 5 p.m. Visitation continues one hour prior to services at the church Wednesday.
She is survived by daughters, Julie Straub of Eden Prairie, Annie Landsteiner of Chisago City, Vikki Hahn and Mary Baldwin, both of Marshall, and Sue Hahn of Tempe, AZ; sons, Frank of New Ulm, James, Bill, and John, all of Madelia, and Joe of Blackduck; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren,

Magdalene "Mag" Marti, 84, of 905 15th South St., New Ulm, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at her daughter's home in New Ulm.
Funeral service will be 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 6, at Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm. Private burial will be in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm.
Magdalene Marie Bianchi, the daughter of Carrie (Eibner) and Joseph Bianchi, was born Dec. 1, 1918, in New Ulm. She attended parochial schools, graduating from Holy Trinity High School in 1936. Mag married Wilbur "Bibs" Marti May 31, 1941, in New Ulm. While her husband served in the military, Mag helped the war effort working in Seattle, Wash. During this time in her life, her only brother, Willibald "Bill" Bianchi received the Congressional Medal of Honor Feb. 3, 1942, and died in 1945. After her husband's discharge from the military, the couple returned to New Ulm. Mag managed the cafeteria at Kraft Foods for many years. Following her retirement in 1984, Mag continued to make her home in New Ulm. She enjoyed bowling, swimming, and was an avid bridge player. She was a member of the Turner Ladies, Junior Pioneers, an Oak Hills Living Center volunteer and auxiliary member. She was also a 20-year Meals on Wheels volunteer.
Survivors include her daughters, Mary Borstad and her husband Donald of Ramstein, Germany, Carolyn Smith of Scottsdale, AZ, Jean Wenk and her husband Dave of New Ulm, Sue Portner and her husband Ed of Forest City, IA; sons, Steve Marti and his wife Joni of Plymouth, Joe Marti and his wife Bianca of Albuquerque, NM, Mike Marti and his wife Lori of North Mankato; ten grandchildren, Steve Borstad, Carrie Gay, Jason, Patrick, and Matthew Wenk, Jordan Marti, Laura and James Marti, Tiffany Nielsen-Tschritter and Tammy Nielsen; two great-grandchildren, Shelby Gay and Riley Nielsen-Tschritter; three sisters, Jo McGraw of Seattle, WA, Jermayne McKethen of Billings, MT, Mary Louise Torpey of Phoenix, AZ; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents and brother, Mag was preceded in death by her husband in 1976, and granddaughter, Christina Matthews.

Victor H. Marti, 88, of Springfield, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died on Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, with Father Todd Petersen officiating. Interment will be at the Marti Family Cemetery, rural Sleepy Eye.
Visitation will be 4:30 8 p.m. Thursday and 7:30-10 a.m. Friday at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. There will be a parish prayer service at 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. E-mail condolences may be sent at www.sturmfh.com
Victor was born on Aug. 8, 1915, in Milford Township, Brown County, the son of Frank and Minnie (Hager) Marti. He grew up and attended country school in Milford Township. Victor married Gertrude Hauser on Oct. 30, 1940, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. After marriage they moved to Belgrade, where he farmed and drove truck for a year. Victor and Gertrude returned to the family farm where Victor farmed and worked as a diesel mechanic until his retirement.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Victor enjoyed deer hunting, fishing in Canada, snowmobiling, coffee in Essig, tractor pulls, spending time with family and walks in the woods.
He is survived by his wife Gertude Marti of Sleepy Eye; 13 children, Monica and Norm Warwick of Sleepy Eye, Janet Jenniges of Finlayson, Frank Marti of New Ulm, Karen and Dennis Deopere of Cambria, Diane and George Hemmeter of East Bethel, Ron and Marlene Marti of New Ulm, Anita and John Hemmeter of Finlayson, Steve Marti of Sleepy Eye, Paul and LuAnn Marti of New Ulm, Mary and Mark Haller of River Falls, Wis., Bob and Kathy Marti of Sleepy Eye, Julie and Dick Sindelir of Morton, and Beverly and Dan Kadlec of Lafayette; 38 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Helen and George Lendt of New Ulm; and sister-in-law, Eleanor Marti of New Ulm.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Edwin; sister, Elinor Hauert; son-in-law, Mathias Jenniges; daughter-in-law, Karen Marti; grandchildren, Gregg Marti and Brenda Jean Marti.

Bernard A. "Bernie" Whetston, 78, of Shorewood, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003 at Methodist Hospital St. Louis Park.
Memorial Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday Nov. 6, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church of Deephaven, Wayzata.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia.
Bernard is survived by his wife Carol; children and spouses, Richard and Joan Whetston of Shorewood, Gloria and Richard Bromley of Mound, Daralee Kreft and special friend Joe Joseph of California, Diane Morrison and special friend Bruce Davis, Dorothy and Jeff Kolden of Osseo; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Gertrude and Royce Holzerland of Stewartville, and Margaret Latcham of Willmar; brothers and sisters-in-law, Vincent and Raeann Whetston of Maple Grove, James and Jo Whetston of North Carolina, Francis and Sandy Whetston of Lake Lillian; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Delores Holden of California, Jeanette and Laddie Carda of New Ulm, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
Bernard was preceded in death by his first wife Virginia; parents, William and Mary Laura Whetston, a sister, Charlotte Christiansen, and brothers-in-law Orval Mack and Jack Holden.
He was born Oct. 15, 1925, in Bird Island, the son of William and Mary Laura (O'Connor) Whetston. On August 20, 1947, he married Virginia Karl in Mankato. She passed away in 1997. On June 22, 1996, he married Carol M. Mack Kreft in Chaska.

James S. Rich, 88, of 1319 North Jefferson Street in New Ulm, MN, died November 2, 2003, at St Johns Lutheran Home in Springfield, MN.
Services will be in the Chapel at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm at 10 a.m., Wednesday, November 5. Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Jamestown, N.D. at 2 p.m., November 6.
The Minnesota Valley Funeral Home is making the arrangements.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Nov, 4, from 5-7 p.m. and one hour prior to the service.
James is survived by a daughter, Patricia Suydam of Cuba, IL; son and daughter-in-law, Myron and Rosemarie Rich of New Ulm and daughter-in-law, Mary Pat Denvey-Rich of New Prague; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; brother, Eugene Rich of Madison, WI; and brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Helen Rich of North Bend, OR.
James was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edith; sister, Arlene Mary Knian; son, Ronald Rich; daughter-in-law, Donna Rich; a grandchild, Andrew Rich; and sister-in-law, Joann Rich.
James was born March 15, 1915, in New Rockford, N.D., to Daniel and Clara Rich. He graduated from Hope High School in Hope, ND in 1934. He married Edith Nygaard on August 17, 1936 in Hope, N.D. After their marriage, they moved to Jamestown, N.D., in 1937. In 1946 they moved to Cooperstown, N.D. and then to Sleepy Eye, MN in 1957. They have lived in New Ulm since 1962 and he worked for Current's Meat Market and Berens Rodenberg & O'Connor Law Office.
James was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
James enjoyed flying, archery and woodworking.
The family requests Memorials go to either the St John's Lutheran Church Building Fund or to the Oak Hills Living Center Auxiliary.

Alice Albertson, 85, of Maple Grove, formerly of Springfield, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at the Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at St. John Lutheran Church in Springfield, with Pastor Carl Seamon officiating. Interment will be at the Springfield City Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:30 - 8 p.m. today and 7:30 - 9 a.m. Thursday at Sturm Funeral Home, 407 N. Jackson, Springfield.
Alice was born Jan. 6, 1918, in Waverly Township, Martin County, the daughter of John C. and Hannah (Nelson) Helvig. She grew up on a farm in Waverly Twp. near Fairmont, and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1936 and the University of Minnesota in 1940. Alice taught school in Lansing, Iowa, and Stoughton, Wis., before her marriage to Edwin Albertson on June 14, 1942. Following their marriage they taught in Monona, Iowa, before moving to Springfield in 1947. Alice taught English, speech and drama during her teaching career, and following retirement, was very active in the Brown County Retired Educators Association.
She was baptized, confirmed and married at the Waverly Lutheran Church. Alice was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Springfield, where she was very active and also enjoyed sharing her Christian experiences and insights with many church groups and organizations throughout the state. She enjoyed reading, writing, raising flowers, cards, golf, sharing her bits of wisdom and her daily walk. Alice especially loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her extended family.
Survivors include her son Douglas and wife Linda of Apple Valley; daughter Janet Stolba of Plymouth; grandchildren, Nicholas Albertson, Dr. Sonia Marie and husband Ryan Sather, Kristin Ann and husband Tim Hayes, Rebecca Lynn Albertson, Ross and wife Amy Albertson, Mitchell and wife Stacy Stolba, and Adam Stolba; great grandchildren, Lauren, Matthew and Rachel Sather, Lydia, Gus and Arlo Hayes, and Hannah and Hunter Stolba; brothers, Robert and wife Esther Helvig of Grand Rapids, and Bruce and wife Evelyn Helvig of Fairmont; and aunt, Lucille Helvig of Fairmont. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Edwin in May of 2003; and children, Patricia Ann and Gary Lee.

Walter Franke - Former New Ulm area contractor Walter Franke, 105, died Saturday Nov. 1, 2003, at Marshalltown. Franke lived in three centuries and would have reached 106 years Dec. 17.
For the past 10 years he has been a resident in nursing homes in Marshall County and State Center, Iowa. On Sept. 28, he was recognized as the oldest living resident in Marshalltown as part of that city's 150th anniversary observance.
Franke specialized in carpentry in the rural New Ulm-Essig area and built a number of homes in New Ulm. He was an accomplished cabinet and furniture maker.
He was born in Mulligan Township on Dec. 17, 1897, to Carl and Bertha (Wilkins) Franke, soon thereafter moving to Oklahoma with his family. Carl was born in Germany and Bertha in Illinois.
Franke's mother died when he was three, and his father remarried. He was sent to Sleepy Eye to live with a brother, Albert. As a young man he operated a carpentry shop in Essig. He married Emma (Havemeier) Schapekahm Oct. 12, 1935, moving to 23rd North Street, where he developed a small fruit and hobby farm. He continued construction work and built many barns and farm buildings in the area.
He was the last survivor of his family, preceded in death by 16 brothers and sisters.
Survivors also include Joan Wegner and son-in-law Larry Wegner of Marshalltown; stepdaughters, Helen (Harold) Kuester, Marion (Alton) Melzer and Dorothy (Herb) Schaper, all of New Ulm.
He is also survived by grandchildren Jodi and Jason Wegner of Marshalltown and stepgrandchildren Steven and Randy Melzer and Blake Schaper, all of New Ulm; Lance Kuester of Arvada, Colo..; Blair Schaper of Milwaukee and Brad Schaper of Onalaska, Wis.. plus nieces and nephews in different states.
Also surviving are stepgreat- grandchildren Heather (Tanar) Haala, Fairfax; Heath Melzer, Silverdale, Wash..; Naci Melzer, Phoenix; Jada (Kevin) Inman, Boise, ID.; Rachel Kuester, Minneapolis; and Roddy and Rylee Melzer and Connor Schaper, New Ulm; and Aaron Schaper, Onalaska, Wis.; stepgreat-great-grandchildren include Brittany and Ty Haala of Fairfax, Timothy Melzer of Silverdale, WA.; and Brenna Inman of Boise, ID.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife in 1971; daughter Shirley; stepson Delmar Schapekahm of Selby, S.D. in 1985, and stepgreat-grandchildren, Natti Eve Melzer and Lauren Schaper.
Walter was a member of St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church while in New Ulm and St. John Lutheran Church in State Center. Walter moved to Marshalltown in 1972 to live with his daughter and son-in-law Joan and Larry Wegner.
Walter is remembered for his wit and wisdom, his knowledge of scripture, his enormous capacity for work and his favorite words, "I suppose." Right up to his death he comprehended present day events as his memory still ranged from recent events to the distant past.
He was a loving dad and grandpa and will be missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service and private burial will be held later.
