Raymond Frisell Montague
Raymond F. Montague, 82, Two Harbors, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Two Harbors on September 4, 1917 to Mary (Cyr) and Albert J. Montague. In 1929 his family moved to Larsmont. He attended school at the Larsmont school house and Two Harbors and later worked in the CC Camps. On December 31, 1941 he married Mae Carlson. He served in the Army air Corp from 1941 until November, 1945, serving in England, Iceland and Germany.

After his honorable discharge, he and Mae moved back to Two Harbors. He worked for the DM&IR until Black Friday, 1963 and at Husky Hydraulics until his retirement in 1980.

Ray loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He spent many days at the cabin on Lax Lake, feeding the ducks and fishing for his elusive bass. His friends said he was the cribbage champion of the world.

He was preceded in death by a son, Michael, his parents, a sister, Betty Didrickson, and a brother Robert.

Ray is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mae, two daughters, Kathleen (Roger) Saamanen, and Joan Gelineau, both of Two Harbors, grandchildren Cassandra (Kevin) Beardsley, Michelle (Matthew) Carlson, Nathaniel (Renee Lackore) Saamanen, Larissa Saamanen, Aaron (Missy Baumgartner) Gelineau, Adam and Lee Gelineau; great-grandchildren Autumn and Zane Carlson and Logan Gelineau; extended family Bruce and Gayle Pierce and family; a sister, Joyce Muellerleile; several nieces and nephews; and many special friends.

Ray was a member of the American Legion, VFW and Disabled Veterans of America.

Services were held December 13 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors, with burial at Lakeview Cemetery.

Donald Roy Grant
Donald Roy Grant, 82, Beldenville, Wis., died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at United Hospital in St. Paul.

He was born October 31, 1917 in Kinross, Iowa, the son of Roy and Nora (Back) Grant. He attended schools near Kinross. He married Evelyn Leona Utley on March 14, 1940. They lived in Southern Minnesota where they farmed until 1958. They then moved to Silver Bay where he was employed by the Reserve Mining Company, retiring in 1978. After retiring, they moved to Poplar, Wis. Evelyn died in 1988. For the past four years he has resided in Beldenville. He enjoyed farming, fishing and outdoors.

He is survived by three daughters: Geraldine (Bob) Sando of Silver Bay, Clarissa (Robert) Stern of Eden Prairie and Tammy (Chris) Larson of Red Wing; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother, Gail Grant of Delevan, Minn; and two sisters, Mildred (Ole) Fuchs of Pine Island and Carol (Chuck) Lidtke of Waterloo, Ia.; daughter-in-law, JoDee (John) Larson of Minong, Wis.; and son-in-law, Arnie Lillback of Finland, along with many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife in 1988, one daughter, Wanda Lillback, one son, Jerry Grant, and one granddaughter, Sheila Lillback.

Memorial services were held December 15. Burial will be in Crystal Bay Cemetery in Finland.

Dennis W. Christianson
Dennis W. Christianson, 67, Two Harbors, went to be with the Lord on December 12, 1999. He was an outdoorsman, retired Reserve Mining employee, member of the Steelworkers Union, musician and craftsman.

He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Marie; sons, David, Robert (Colleen), Michael (Renee); daughter Diane (Christianson) Knaffla; grandchildren, Eric, Kristi, Jacob, Ben, Luke, Jamie and Aaron; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Christianson; brother-in-law, Ted Jacobson; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in the spring, when the tree frogs sing.

Kenneth W. McKnight
Kenneth William McKnight, 81, Bruce, S.D., passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2001, in Sioux Falls, S.D.

He was born February 28, 1920 to Ella (Reuter) and Loyal McKnight, in Bruce, S. D. He grew up in the Bruce area where he graduated from high school. He then began studies at South Dakota State in Brookings and was in State’s ROTC program.

In May of 1942, he married Margaret Vavrek in Washington D.C. Kenneth served overseas in the Army and was honorably discharged in September of 1945 with the rank of Captain. The couple made their home in Brookings where he completed his education. He then began his career in mining, which took the couple to Hibbing, Fairmont, Babbit and Silver Bay. Kenneth retired from the Reserve Mining Company after 30 years in 1981.

He was preceded in death by wife Margaret in 1987, his parents and son Timothy.

He is survived by his children Michael (Nancy), Sioux Falls, Carol (Ron) Balt, Duluth, Judy (Daryl) Strandien, Seattle, Wash., Jeanne McKnight, Seattle, Wash.; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were held April 2, 2001, at Silver Bay Cemetery. Local arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Conrad Hendershot
Conrad Hendershot, 62, Duluth, died Friday, March 30, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.

He was born Feb. 3, 1939, in Woodside Township, Otter Tail County, to Howard and Ina (Wright) Hendershot. He was a longtime Duluth resident. He was a former employee of Duluth Lighthouse for the Blind.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers Byard and Donald.

He is survived by brothers Vernon of Two Harbors, and Loris (Betty) of Sussex, N.J.; sister Maxine (Edwin) Dettwiler of Two Harbors; sister-in-law Ethylene Hendershot of Enid, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Service was Tuesday in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, with internment in Wrightsville Cemetery, Bertha, Minn. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Mildred Mae Bigelow
Mildred Mae Bigelow, 90, died in Lakeland, Fla. on May 15, 2002.

Mildred was born March 1, 1912, the daughter of Otto and Iva Bromley in Kasson. Mildred lived for many years in Two Harbors before moving to Lakeland, Fla. to live with her daughter.

Mildred is survived by one son, Ronald and wife, Ruth Bigelow, Two Harbors; one daughter, Kay Kromschroeder, Lakeland, Fla.; one brother, Cecil and wife, Marge Bromley, Faribault; one sister-in-law, Hermina Bromley, Austin, Texas; five grandchildren, Richard and Lori Bigelow, Randy Bigelow, Diane Marritt, Donna Gaume, Scott and Jamie Kromschroeder; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward Bigelow; one brother and sister-in-law, Lloyd and Sue Bromley; one brother Glenn Bromley; and one sister and brother-in-law, Gladys and Glenn Nelson.

Graveside services were May 29, 2002, at Riverside Cemetery with Reverend Victor Jortack officiating.

Henry Angfeldt Lovold
Henry Angfeldt Lovold - “Papa Bear”, Englewood, Colo., died at home May 25, 2002, after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Beaver Bay on Nov. 11, 1913.

He is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Garrision and Karen Nurmi of Beaver Bay; a brother, George E. Lovold, Annandale; his son, Dennis Lovold and daughter, Beth Lovold, both of Englewood, Colo.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Donations in his memory can be made to the Visiting Nurses Association Hospice at Home Program, 390 Grant Street, Denver, Colo. 80203.

John Lorne Aske
John Lorne Aske, born July 18, 1934, in Two Harbors, died July 18, 2002, in Meritcare Hospital, Fargo, N.D. of cancer

His parents were Frank and Martha Aske of Two Harbors. He resided in Segog until 1963, attended Two Harbors schools and worked for the DM&IR.

He married Gloria Ailie in 1962. They moved to Alaska in 1963 where John was a bartender, oil company wholesale distributor and industrial arts teacher. They also resided in Washington state, Oregon and Guam before returning to Minnesota in 1995. At the time of his death he was residing in New York Mills.

John and his wife traveled extensively over the years; he enjoyed fishing and woodcarving and was active in community government, service organizations and social groups. He was a Moose member for over 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Walter of Two Harbors; and sister Elaine Cooper of Florida.

He is survived by wife, Gloria of New York Mills; sister-in-law, Cynthia Ailie of Huntington Beach, Calif.; two nephews, John and Frank Cooper; one niece, Rosemary; cousins, and a large circle of friends.

John was cremated and his ashes will be sent to Alaska for final disposition.

Brenda Mae Hull
Brenda M. Hull, 38, Two Harbors, died Friday, March 28, 2003, at Lake View Memorial Hospital after a 2 1/2 year battle with heart disease.

She was born Oct. 27, 1964, to James and Marie (Hill) Carlson in Lake View Memorial Hospital in Two Harbors.

She graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1983. Through the years she worked at several Two Harbors area restaurants and resorts, the Two Harbors Federal Credit Union, the Postal Encoding Center in Duluth and United Health Care in Duluth. For the past five years she was employed at Earthwood Inn in Two Harbors.

Brenda loved spending time with friends and family, especially her sons. She enjoyed music, traveling, playing bingo and foosball, camping, family vacations, Nascar races and collecting anything related to dolphins or Tweety Bird.

She is survived by her sons, Jared and Jake Hull of Two Harbors; parents, Marie and Jim Carlson of Two Harbors; sisters, Sandi (Ron Ryan) Carlson, Julaine Lee of Two Harbors and Ann (Mike) Welsh of Duluth and Naples, Fla.; brother, Lauri “Larry” (Kathy) Carlson of Two Harbors; special friend Aaron Salakka of Two Harbors; former husband Tony Hull of Lake of the Woods; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Brenda and her sons had a loving and treasured relationship. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Services were held on Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Earl D. “Hort” Johnson
Earl “Hort” Johnson, 85, formerly of Two Harbors, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, in the Minnesota Veteran’s Home in Silver Bay.

He was born Oct. 30, 1917, to Charles “Carl” and Inga “Susan” (Sallness) Johnson in Two Harbors, where he grew up and graduated from high school. He attended Duluth State Teachers College and then graduated from the University of Minnesota in Mortuary Science. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army. He was employed as a mortician in the Twin Cities and later in California and retired to Mesa, Ariz. In 1993 he moved to the Veteran’s Home in Silver Bay.

Hort is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sally; and sisters, Jeanette Simola, Irene Nault and Evelyn Dinneen.

He is survived by a son, Daniel (Jeanne) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; brothers Parnell Johnson of Two Harbors and Clarence “Booksa” (Mary) Johnson of Two Harbors; a sister, Margaret “Dolly” Oling of Two Harbors; and a grandson, Scott (Jill) Johnson.

No local services will be held, burial will be in Arizona. Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer’s Association, 4550 W. 77th St., Suite 200, Edina, MN 55435. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Eileen Mary Walter
Eileen Mary Walter, nee Riley, our beloved mother, grandmother and friend died March 31, 2003.

She was born in Knife River on April 5, 1923, and moved to Detroit, Mich., when she was 18. She was an executive secretary of personnel and hiring at General Motors. She married Edward O. Walter on July 3, 1948, and together they had seven children.

Eileen was a devout Catholic who deeply loved God, her children and grandchildren. She had a compassionate heart, an open mind and always found time to listen. She was a poet at heart, a gentle mother, a graceful friend. Eileen also enjoyed bowling and bingo.

She is survived by six of her children, Ed “Buzz” (Patty), Bill (Sheila), Brian, Barry, Kathleen and Sheila; and nine grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 50 years, Edward Sr.; and son, Timothy Joseph.

Those desiring may make contributions to the American Heart Association, Memorial Tribute Program, Dept. 77-3968, Chicago, IL 60678-3968 or the American Cancer Society, 1755 Abbey Road, East Lansing, MI 48823 in memory of Eileen.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, April 4, 1 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 3815 S. Cedar, Lansing. The Rite of Commital will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Lansing.
