Agnes Kotnik, 77, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at The Resurrection Catholic Church in Eveleth. Monsignor Aleksander Suchan will be the celebrant. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the Mass Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Eveleth Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Agnes (Bicking) Kotnik, 77, of Virginia, formerly of Zim and Eveleth, died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 12, 1927, to Stefan and Mary (Kotchevar) Prelesnik in Eveleth. She married Raymond Bicking on Nov. 24, 1945, in Virginia. Following marriage, the couple made their home in Zim. Raymond died on Aug. 16, 1981. Agnes married Frank Kotnik on Sept. 14, 1984, in Eveleth. Frank died on Sept. 5, 2000. She worked for the ISD No. 710 for 10 years as a warehouse secretary. She was a member of the Resurrection Catholic Church and the Yoki-Bergman Post No. 220 Auxiliary.

She is survived by her two daughters, Barbara (John) Rautanen of Gilbert, Diane (Michael) Barkela of Big Lake; three sons, David (Pamela) Bicking of Aurora, Colo., Roger (Linda) Bicking of Aurora, Colo., Robert (Connie) Bicking of Eveleth; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild; sister, Olga Bohar; brother, Anton Cesarek; cousin, John Cesarek; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; sister, Margaret Venne; brothers, Steve Prelesnik, Frank Cesarek, and Joseph Cesarek.

Carl M. 'Milt' Nelson
Carl M. 'Milt' Nelson, 96, SERVICES: Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church in Ely, with the Rev. John C. Bonk officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be in the Ely Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

Carl M. “Milt” Nelson, 96, of Ely, died Sunday, July 11, 2004, at his daughter’s home in Cook.

Sister Mary AdNives
Sister Mary AdNives, 91, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be 9 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gilbert with Monsignor Aleksander Suchan as celebrant. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Gilbert Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

Sister Mary AdNives, 91, of Lemont, Ill., formerly of Gilbert, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at Mount Assisi Convent in Lemont.

Ann L. Marolt was born on Aug. 25, 1913, in Gilbert, to Matt and Frances (Perme) Marolt and grew up there.

She entered the religious Order of Sisters of St. Francis of Christ the King on Oct. 4, 1931, at the Provincial Mother House at Mt. Assisi in Lemont, Ill. She received her B.S. degree in education from DePaul University in Chicago and her Master’s Degree at Joliet, Ill. She also did graduate work at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Penn.

Ann took the religious name of Sister Mary AdNives, which translates into Our Lady of the Snows. Her religious milestones include her 50th year as a nun on July 4, 1982, her 60th year on June 28, 1992, and her 70th year in 2002.

Ann, during her years as a nun, was a teacher and principal. She worked at various locations during her career, including: St. Nicholas School in Pittsburgh, St. Christine School in Euclid, Ohio, St. Paul School in Cleveland, Ohio, St. Joseph The Worker in Gary, Ind., St. Cyril and Methodius School in Sheboygan, Wis. Her last duties included comptroller and office clerk at Mt. Assisi Academy in Lemont.

She is survived by five brothers, Tony (Frances) Marolt, Lawrence (LaVerne) Marolt, Paul Marolt, and Edward Marolt, all of Gilbert, and Rudy (Gloria) Marolt of Virginia; four sisters, Frances Kovatovich and Mary Marolt, both of Gilbert, Angela (Jim) Meados of Cold Spring, Minn., and Theresa (Joe) Wargo of Lyndhurst, Ohio; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and six brothers, Matt, Jr., John, Joe, Louis, Jacob and Frank.

Philip H. Petrell
Philip H. Petrell, 76, SERVICES: A Celebration of Life will be held 2 p.m. today at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson, Wis. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Arthritis Foundation.

Philip H. Petrell, 76, of Hudson, Wis., and formerly of Embarrass, Minn., and Show Low, Ariz., died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, in his residence.

He was born July 14, 1928, to Henry J. and Siiri (Levander) Petrell in Chicago, Ill. He served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict as a member of the Strategic Air Command. Philip married the former Donna Graham on Nov. 2, 1963, in Grand Forks, N.D. A Hudson resident since 2001, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He enjoyed traveling to national parks throughout the country and was also an avid woodworker, gardener, and outdoorsman.

Philip is lovingly survived by his wife, Donna; daughter, Janet (Daniel Welch) Petrell, of Hudson; stepdaughters, Royann (Sylvain Alee) Petrell of Vancouver, B.C., and Christine (James) Petrell-Kallevig of Cleveland, Ohio; grandchildren, Melanie (Petrell) Sokoloski, Annette Petrell, David and Paul Kallevig; and two great-grandchildren, Dakota Sokoloski and Kelly Petrell; two sisters, Milma Naeseth of Madison, Wis., and Olivia Kissin of Spokane, Wash.; and two brothers, Wilfred (Ursula) Petrell and Edgar Petrell, both of Embarrass; and many nieces and nephews residing throughout the country.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepson, Graham; sisters, Ruth Petrell, Martha Kaupp, Helen McElderry and a brother, Roy.

Arlo Edgar Asleson
Arlo Edgar Asleson, 73, SERVICES: Funeral Mass 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Aurora, with the Rev. David Forsman as celebrant. Visitation 4-6 p.m. Sunday with recitation of the rosary at 5:40 p.m. in the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora and will continue Monday one hour prior to Mass at the church. Military honors will be accorded by the Aurora/Hoyt Lakes Color Guard, with burial to follow in Forest Hill Cemetery in Aurora.

Arlo Edgar Asleson, 73, of Aurora died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, at his residence.

He was born April 27, 1931, in Greenbush, Minn., to Asle and Nedline (Buley) Asleson. He attended school in Greenbush and later served the country as an Army veteran in the Korean Conflict. On Nov. 27, 1954, he married Irene VanDeHey in Baudette, Minn. That same year they moved to Aurora and Arlo worked for Reserve Mining Co. in Babbitt as a service truck driver. He retired from there in 1984 due to health reasons.

He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Aurora American Legion Post 241 of Aurora.

Survivors include his wife, Irene; daughters, Bonnie Asleson of Aurora and Dulcey (Richard) Khelah of Jacksonville, Fla.; brothers, Albert (Lois) of Embarrass and Oscar of Randolph, Minn.; sisters, Beatrice Haaby of Fargo, Clara Ziska of Roseau, Velma Klinger of Roseau and Minnie Frost of Molalla, Ore.; grandchildren, Samuel, Nadia, Jenna and one expected grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Gladys; and brothers in infancy.

Mary M. Pazzelli
Mary M. Pazzelli, 85, SERVICES: Funeral at 11 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church in Virginia. The Rev. Don Stauty will officiate. Visitation for one hour before the service. Burial in Calvary Cemetery in Virginia. Arrangements by Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Mary M. Pazzelli, 85, of Virginia died Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at St. Michael’s Health and Rehab Center in Virginia.

She was born Sept. 25, 1919, in Brandon, Minn., the oldest of six children of William and Hannah (Silvola) Matson. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Virginia and attended Virginia Junior College, where she received her associate of arts degree. She was trained and worked as a lab technician at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago, Ill. She was a U.S. Navy WAVE veteran, serving during World War II at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Washington, D.C. After the war she returned to Virginia, where she worked at the Lenont-Peterson Clinic for many years. She married Bruno Pazzelli on Aug. 13, 1949, in Virginia. She was very active in church functions at Trinity Lutheran.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Bruno; four daughters, Mary (Mark) Barclay of Chaska, Minn., Rita Pazzelli of Silver Spring, Md., Roberta Pazzelli of Woodbury, Minn., and Paul (Paula) Marks of Waite Park, Minn.; two sons, Joseph (Linda) Pazzelli of New Florence, Mo., and Brian (Cathy) Pazzelli of Virginia; seven grandchildren, Kella, Corey, Jodie, John, Antonio, Marco and Luke; and one sister, Ellen Davis of St. Louis, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings, David, Richard “Dick,’’ Olga and John.

Robert R. Ostman
Robert R. Ostman, 79, SERVICES: Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. Elmer Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home and continue for one hour prior to the service Monday. Burial will be in the West Pike Cemetery in Pike Township.

Robert R. Ostman, 79, of Kinross, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at the Virginia Convalescent Center.

He was born Sept. 9, 1925, to Toivo and Saimi (Nurmi) Ostman in Evanston, Ill. His family moved from Evanston to a small farm in Kinross. He attended Mountain Iron schools, graduating in 1943. He was a graduate of Virginia Junior College. He served with the U.S. Air Force from 1949 to 1953, specializing as a high-speed code operator. He married Beatrice Lillian (Maki) Haynes on Aug. 14, 1953. He was a 57-year member of the Mountain Iron Yoki-Bergman VFW Post No. 220, Mesabi Wireless, Quarter Century Wireless Association, and the American Radio Relay League, and the Suomi-Sera r.y. — Finland Society. He was an avid sports fan, a longtime bowler, and was the secretary of the Merchant’s League for many years. His pastimes also included reading, gardening, and wine making and taking good, hot saunas. He worked for several mining companies, retiring from LTV in 1987, after 34 years as an electronic repairman.

Survivors include seven children, Naomi Zettel of Eveleth, Nancy (Terry) Martinson of Buhl, Richard (Susan) Ostman of Alango, Velma Ostman of Mountain Iron, Rebecca (Tim) Johnson of Corning, N.Y., Arthur (Kelly Downs) Ostman of Mountain Iron, and Ronald (Ellen) Ostman of Mountain Iron; 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice, on Jan. 24, 1998; and by his parents.

Leigh M. Oelrich
Leigh M. Oelrich, 83, SERVICES: Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Grace Lutheran Church in Ely, with the Rev. William Fossum officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be in Argo Cemetery, Babbitt. Arrangements are by the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

Leigh M. Oelrich, 83, of Babbitt, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, as a result of an automobile accident in Virginia.

He was born June 11, 1921, in St. Cloud, Minn., to George and Hazel (Orren) Oelrich, and was raised in Guthrie, Minn., and attended school in Bemidji. Leigh was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a longtime Ely and Babbitt area resident and had been an electric shovel operator for Reserve Mining Co.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Babbitt; one son, Curt Oelrich of Pinehurst, Idaho; three daughters, Sharon (Steve) Bateman of Escanaba, Mich., Doreen Flynn of Ely, and Tammy (John) Schubert of Wallace, Idaho; six grandchildren, Jeremy Bateman, Chris Bateman, Jennifer (Jesse) Brunner, Shannon Schubert, Eric Schubert, and Rachel Schubert; one brother, Bob (Marlene) Oelrich of Hoyt Lakes; one sister, Donna Sheppard of Duluth; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Eino E. Suomi

Eino E. Suomi, 91, lifelong resident of Palo, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, in the White Community Nursing Home in Aurora.

He was born June 20, 1913, in Palo, to Herman and Mary (Witkala) Suomi. Eino served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the service, he lived on his 40 acres in Palo and spent a lot of his time in the woods.

He is survived by nieces; great-nieces and great-nephews; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Jean, Lillian, and Vienna; and brothers, Walter and Arvid.

Merwin ‘Bud’ Gustafson
Merwin ‘Bud’ Gustafson, 80, SERVICES: Celebration of Life Service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Military honors will be accorded by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard.

Merwin James "Bud" Gustafson, 80, of Cloquet, died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, in Community Memorial Hospital, Cloquet.

He was born Nov. 30, 1923, in Hibbing, to Frank and Golden (Boucher) Gustafson. Bud was a graduate of Hibbing High School. He was a World War II Coast Guard Veteran, having served on a destroyer escort from 1943-1947. Bud worked at Potlatch Paper Co. in Cloquet for 32 years. He was a life member of the Cloquet VFW, the Cooties and the Potlatch Quarter Century Club. In addition to spending time with his family, he enjoyed stamp collecting, flower-gardening, fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his daughters, Cheryl (Douglas) Leno, and Joy Gustafson, both of Cloquet; sons, Kerry (Julie), Jim (Heidi), Kirk, Kevin (Muriel) and Jay, all of Cloquet; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Frank (Fran) Gustafson, and Charles (LaVon) Gustafson; sister, Delores Flynn; and nephew, Dennis Flynn.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Audrey, on March 11, 2004; and his brother-in-law, Jim Flynn.

Clayton A. Johnson
Clayton A. Johnson, 80, SERVICES: Private family services will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to SMDC East Range Hospice or to the donors choice. Arrangements are by the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

Clayton A. Johnson, 80, of Gilbert, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, at his home.

He was born Nov. 18, 1923, in Hibbing, to Dalbert and Mabel (Mahood) Johnson, and grew up there. He attended the Hibbing schools. Clayton had been a lifelong Iron Range resident. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, European Theater of operations, during World War II as a radio operator/gunner on B-17 bombers, attaining the rank of tech sergeant. He re-enlisted during the Korean War and served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He was employed by Erie Mining Co. in Hoyt Lakes as a security officer from 1955 until his retirement in 1983. He was also employed by Lundgren Motors of Eveleth as a driver. Clayton was the happiest when he was driving on road trips and camping at White Face. He loved fishing, nature, and animals. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and drove people for the American Red Cross.

He is survived by three daughters, Sharyn, Susan, and Janis, and their husbands, Bruce, Roger, and Mark; one brother, Robert Mahood of Washington state; and a very special friend, Shirley A. Olson.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mary Rose Shaffer
Mary Rose Shaffer, 74, SERVICES: Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Services Chapel in Chisholm, with the Rev. Jon Wild of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and continue for one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.

Mary Rose Shaffer, 74, of Hibbing, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at her residence.

She was born April 8, 1930, in Terrebonne, Minn., to Albert and Alice (Hubert) Gagner. She attended school in Mentor, Minn., and lived in Buhl from 1952 until moving to Chisholm in 1971, and had been a Hibbing resident since 1990. She was united in marriage on Dec. 11, 1971, in Chisholm, to Roger P. Shaffer. She worked as a nurses aide at Leisure Hills Health Center in Hibbing and then retired in 1996 from the former Buchanan Nursing Home in Chisholm. She was a loving wife, mother, and was devoted to her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Roger P.; children, Greg Violette of Las Vegas, Nev., Rodney (Maryanne) Violette of Lake Vermilion-Cook, Daniel (LuAnn) Violette of Dark Lake-Britt, Thomas (Linda) Violette of Granite Falls, Wash., Colleen Violette of Coon Rapids, Minn.; grandchildren, Amanda Mary Violette, Briana Marie Hicke, Bradley Michael Hicke, Michael Keith Violette, Luc Taylor Violette, Magdalynn Ann Kayfes, Jeffrey Dennis Kayfes; brothers, Melvin (Mary) Gagner of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Pete (Mary) Gagner of Edmonds, Wash., Donald (Merle) Gagner of Maple Lake, Minn.; sisters, Ida Anderson of Moorhead, Minn., Betty (Stanley) Ackerson of Detroit Lakes, Minn., Lucy (Ronnie) Fitzgerald of Sabin, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Florence Gagner, and Ann Gagner, both of Seattle, Wash.; 56 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Lloyd, Hilarie, and Mike Ganger.
