Marguerite M. Nuorala
Marguerite M. Nuorala, 76, SERVICES: A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Woodland Presbyterian Church in Babbitt. The Rev. Anna E. Williamson will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Argo Cemetery in Babbitt. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Woodland Presbyterian Church, Central Boulevard and Acacia, Babbitt, Minn., 55706. Arrangements are by the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

Marguerite M. Nuorala, 76, of Babbitt, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

She was born March 21, 1928, in Brookston, Minn., to Thomas and Margaret (Etienne) Flynn and grew up there. She was a graduate of the Brookston High School.

Marguerite married Sulo J. Nuorala on Feb. 18, 1946, in Duluth. They had lived in Duluth and Bovey before becoming Babbitt residents in August of 1956.

She worked at the Babbitt Drug for 18 years. She was a charter member of the Woodland Presbyterian Church of Babbitt; Presbyterian Women; past member of the Rebekah Lodge of Babbitt; and an active supporter of the Babbitt Library.

Marguerite is survived by her husband, Sulo of Babbitt; three daughters, Patricia (Steven John) Alander of Duluth, Annette (Charles) Corlett III of Proctor, and Rebecca (David) House of Yuma, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Christopher Syrjanen, Adrianne Syrjanen, Edward Kessler, Adam Kessler, Jeffrey Kessler, Michelle House, and Andrew Alander; five great-grandchildren, Corbon Kessler, Kaitlyn Kessler, Brooke Syrjanen-Pohl, Stephanie Syrjanen-Pohl, and William Syrjanen-Pohl; one sister, Gertrude Houle of Duluth; three brothers, James (Verna) Flynn of Esko, Thomas (Diane) Flynn of Winona, and Russell Flynn of Twig; one sister-in-law, Florence Dailey of Hermantown; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and five brothers, Charles “Ole” Flynn, George Flynn, Philip “Mickey” Flynn, Albert “Jack” Flynn, and Patrick Flynn.

Nellie R. Castagneri
Nellie R. Castagneri, 91, SERVICES: Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rupp Funeral Home and Cremation Service Chapel in Chisholm. The Rev. John R. Koppel of Chisholm Assembly of God Church will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Chisholm Cemetery.

Nellie R. Castagneri, 91, of Chisholm, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, in Heritage Manor Health Care Center in Chisholm.

She was born March 12, 1913, in Colusa, Ill., to Charles and Lola (Heigh) Lofton. She had been a Chisholm resident since 1934 and was united in marriage on May 27, 1937, to Frank R. Castagneri.

Nellie is survived by her children, Rosalind (Buzz) Lindstrom of Chisholm, Dennis (and friend, Shirley Duden) Castagneri of Blaine, Minn., Andrea (Dan) Boone of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Rhonda (Russell) Cornelius of Chisholm; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank R., on June 12, 1998; and by two brothers and a sister.

Hilda Elma Johnson
Hilda Elma Johnson, 85, SERVICES: Funeral 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church in Virginia, with the Rev. Nathan Sager officiating. Inurnment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia. Memorials are preferred and may be directed to East Range Hospice. Services provided by Bauman-Cron, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Virginia. Hilda Elma Johnson, 85, of Virginia died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, in her residence.

She was born April 2, 1919, in Embarrass to Sam and Ida Marie (Lintula) Heikkila, and was a 1937 graduate of Embarrass High School. She married Wilho Johnson on Nov. 22, 1941, and lived in Embarrass prior to moving to Virginia in 1942. She was employed by the Troy laundry for 25 years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of Gesthsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church and its Mary Circle, the Virginia Senior Citizens and Women to Women. She loved to volunteer her time with the Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency, enjoyed taking walks, and enjoyed her time spent at the family cabin on Lake Vermilion.

Hilda is survived by her children, Marie (Tom) Maki of Eveleth and Royal (Debra) Johnson of Wayne, Ill.; a sister, Mabel Harju, of Aurora; grandchildren, Dani, Marisa, Kipp (Nadine), Brett (Jennifer), Kraig, Jared and Logan Johnson, and David, James (Rachelle), Kevin, Mark and Thomas Jr. Maki; great-grandchildren, Naomi, Alexis and Drew Maki and Devyn, Myranda, Landry and Kaylin Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wilho, in 1972; grandson, Daniel Maki; and brothers and sisters, Lydia Hietala, Gertrude Huttula, Helen Tuominen, Viola Toivonen and John, Reino and Roy Heikkila.

Toivo V. Kyllonen
Toivo V. Kyllonen, 84, SERVICES: Funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia, with the Rev. Robert Simensen officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be in Rauha Cemetery, Palo.

Toivo V. Kyllonen, 84, of Lakeland died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 29, 1920, to Victor and Elli (Peterson) Kyllonen in Alango. He grew up in Alango and attended school in Markham. He married Martha Kamunen on April 15, 1950, in Virginia. Following marriage the couple lived in Palo and moved to Lakeland in 1953. He worked for Erie Mining until retiring in 1975. He loved the outdoors and visiting with friends.

Surviving are his wife, Martha; two sons, Gary (Doris) Kyllonen of Dassel and Ervin (Debbie) Kyllonen of Bloomington; three grandchildren, Justin, Katie and Garrett; and a brother, Eugene (Ellen) Kyllonen, of Ely.

Mary Rosamond Hyde
Mary Rosamond Hyde, 85, SERVICES: Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Prospect Baptist Cemetery, Niangua, Mo. The Rev. Charles Buck will officiate. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday in King’s Way United Methodist Church, Springfield, Mo. There will be no formal visitation but friends may call at the Day Funeral Home in Marshfield, Mo., at their convenience. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to King’s Way United Methodist Church and left at the funeral home.

Mary Rosamond (Sally) Hyde, 85, departed this life on Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, in her home in Springfield, Mo.

She was born Dec. 22, 1918, in Niangua, Mo., to Martin Luther and Maggie Lee (Alexander) Day. She was united in marriage to William A. Hyde on Nov. 21, 1942, and to this union, three children were born. Together they shared 61.5 years, before Bill’s passing on Aug. 4, 2004.

Mary graduated from Southwest Missouri Teacher’s College, majoring in music and English. She was a member of King’s Way United Methodist Church and attended as long as her health allowed.

We will miss her presence daily, her smiling eyes and face. But God took her to heaven, a far more lovely place.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Rosalind (Bob) Wallace of Sacramento, Calif.; her sons, Bruce E. (Dory) Hyde, M.D., of St. Paul, and Allen (Linda) Hyde of Layton, Utah; six grandchildren, Allegra, Anne, Brock, Chloe, Garrett and Jordan; and a host of relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; and her parents, Luther and Maggie Day.

Ward A. Chosa
Ward A. Chosa, 44, SERVICES: Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Nett Lake Baptist Church. The Rev. Kevin Lasley and the Rev. Wally Olson will officiate. Visitation will be at 4 p.m. today at the church. Burial will be in the Nett Lake Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.

Ward A. Chosa, 44, formerly of northeastern Minnesota, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Thief River Falls, Minn.

He is survived by his fiancée, Carolyn Meyers of Portland, Ore.; mother, Susan (Thomas J. Konczak) Sullivan of Duluth; one brother, Allan “Bobby” (Charlotte Rollings) Chosa of Thief River Falls, Minn.; one step-brother, Thomas Chosa Jr.; one sister, Clara Anne Chosa of Cook; a step-sister, Judy Chosa of Ely; and special caregiver, Diana Nelson of Thief River Falls, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Chosa.

A. Elaine Jacobson, 76, of Virginia died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at the Fairview University Medical Center in Minneapolis.

She was born Feb. 26, 1928, in Eveleth to Clinton Lowell and Agnes (Crellin) Roberts and was a lifelong resident of Virginia. She graduated from high school in 1945 and from Virginia Junior College in 1947. She married John “Jack” Jacobson on Sept. 12, 1947. They made their home in Virginia and built their home in Midway, where they resided for 44 years.

She worked for the Virginia Daily Enterprise when the name was changed to the Mesabi Daily News. Later, she was employed at Ketola’s Inc. as a credit manager for 25 years. Her family was her primary interest and she also enjoyed cooking, handwork and curling. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Virginia and was active in maintaining long friendships throughout her life.

Elaine is survived by her three sons, Jeffrey (Maureen) Jacobson of Plano, Texas, Glenn (Patty Stahl) Jacobson of Virginia and Jon (Darlys) Jacobson of Virginia; six grandchildren, Tawnie (Tyler) Langenfeld, Jillian Jacobson, Tanner (Mona) Jacobson, Lindsey Jacobson, Marc Mellum and Brent (Lisa) Mellum; two great-grandchildren, Morgan Mellum and Cody Jacobson; brother, Clint (Barbara) Roberts of Monrovia, Calif.; and nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack; and a nephew, Brad.

Jon Anthony Maistrovich
Jon Anthony Maistrovich, 82, SERVICES: Memorial service at 7 p.m. Thursday at Gideon Pond Chapel, 9901 Penn Ave. S., Bloomington.

John Anthony Maistrovich, 82, of Bloomington, Minn., was born July 13, 1922, to Anton and Mary (Nosan) Maistrovich, Croatian and Slovenian immigrants, in the Virginia home built by his father. His mother died when he was 5, and he was raised in Virginia by his father and six siblings. He graduated from the University of Minnesota, where he also pursued his MA degree and PhD equivalent, specialist in education, and resided in Bloomington with his family. He enjoyed a long teaching career in the Minneapolis Public Schools and is characterized by his diverse pursuits and avid interests. He was a World War II veteran, model, world traveler, gardener, gourmet cook, wood sculptor, bridge and book club member and supporter of the creative arts.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Guinevere; two sons, Mark (Jan) and Todd; two grandsons, Jesse and Luke; sister, Mary Kishel Larsen; brother, Ladislow Frank Maistrovich; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Julia Anderson, Angela Flaherty and Margaret Lassila; and brother, Louis Maistrovich.

Norman A. Rankila
Norman A. Rankila, 67, SERVICES: Visitation will begin after 5 p.m., today in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, Superior, Wis. where a 6:30 p.m. Scripture service is scheduled. Visitation will continue at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and continue until the 11 a.m. funeral service with Rev. Fr. Daniel Dahlberg as celebrant. Interment will be at Gordon Cemetery.

Norman A. Rankila, 67, passed away Monday, Oct. 11, 2004 peacefully at home after a two-year battle with acute Leukemia. He was a 10-year survivor of skin cancer and a seven-year survivor of kidney cancer.

He was born on Feb. 7, 1937, in Virginia, to Arnold and Edna Rankila. He attended schools in Virginia and was married there to Jewell (Schley) on July 11, 1958.

He started work at 15 years of age as a stock boy for National Foods, later owning a Pure Service Station. In 1959, he started working for Erickson Oil Products. In July 1963, he and his family moved to Superior, where he managed the Erickson’s Superior Location for 28 years, retiring in 1990. Norman enjoyed the simple life, talking with people, spending time in the outdoors and at their family’s lake place in Gordon, Wis.

He was a woodsman spending his early days hunting and fishing near the Canadian borders, later he continued his enjoyment of the outdoors, he enjoyed picking berries and going on bike rides down country roads. He took three unforgettable trips to Alaska with his family to fish for salmon. He took many trips to Florida. He spoke Finn to locals, debated issues over a cup of coffee with customers, read every newspaper he could get his hands on, loved politics, and was proud to be an American. His greatest joy in life was raising four sons with his wife Jewell. He was a family man and loved spending time with his eight grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Jewell; four sons, Chris (Ann) Rankila, Hermantown, Minn., David (Julie) Rankila, Spooner, Wis., Dan (Lori) Rankila, Rogers, Minn., and Steven (Kim) Rankila, Lake Nebagamon, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Ryan, Brian, Abby, Amy, Brandon, Jacob, Jarid and Hope. Also surviving are numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter, Brenda.

His family would like to thank family and friends for the support during this journey. A special thanks to Dr. Dalton, Ann and the staff at the Duluth Clinic and St. Mary’s Medical Center. Some lost a friend and some lost their best friend. He had SISU right to the end, and all you Finns know what that means.

Suama Anderson
Suama Anderson, 89, SERVICES: Funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. The Rev. Shirley Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Buhl.

Suama Anderson, 89, of Duluth, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at her home. She was born on June 21, 1915, to Axel and Mary (Hagner) Niskanen in Kinney. She grew up and attended school in Kinney and Buhl. She received her nursing degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in 1941. She worked at the Miller Hospital in St. Paul and later at the Medical Arts Building in Duluth. She retired in 1967. She married Elmer Anderson on Nov. 17, 1959, in Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and a sister, Saima.

Rose R. Colclasure
Rose R. Colclasure, 48, SERVICES: Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Meadowlands United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harry McKay Jones officiating. Burial, with military honors accorded by Kral-Matha-Peterson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3044 of Meadowlands, will be in Rosehill Cemetery, Meadowlands. Arrangements are by the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

Rose R. Colclasure, 48, of Meadowlands, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at her home following a lengthy illness.

She was born on Dec. 19, 1955, in Spokane, Wash. to Marvin and Maude (Anderson) Kortekaas, Sr. and had lived in numerous countries and states. She had been a Meadowlands resident since 1987.

Rose was a United States Air Force veteran of the Viet Nam War and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Colclasure, Jr. of Meadowlands; one son, Lee A. Woo of Duluth; one daughter, Taniz M. Woo of Stevens Point, Wis. three step-children, Julia (Damon) Gardner of St. Paul, Edward Colclasure III, of St. Paul and Ryan Colclasure of Hibbing; two grandsons; her mother, Maude Anderson of Meadowlands; two brothers, Marvin (Shirley) Kortekaas of Duluth and Paul Kortegaas of Meadowlands; two sisters, Alice R. (Bill) Smith of Phoenix and Ruth (Steve) Finch of Toivola.

She was preceded in death by her father.
