Kathryn Tessien

Memorial Services for Kathryn Tessien were held on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008 at 2 p.m. at First English Lutheran Church in Ortonville. Pastor Marlene Elmstrom officiated. Memorial Services were also be held on Sunday, Nov. 16, at the Oster-berg Funeral Home in Jackson. Rever-end Eric Hullstrom officiated. Burial was at Riverside Cemetery in Jackson.

On March 26, 1920, a daughter, Kathryn Mae Tessien was born to Leuie and Alma (Miller) Tessien, at Heart’s Delight farm, in Wisconsin Township in Jackson County.

Kathryn is survived by her brother, Dr. Robert (Rita) Tessien of Springfield; sister, Ruth M. Hansen of Ortonville; aunt, Leonora Miller of Austin; nieces, Patricia A (Norbert) Walter, Beth M. Hansen, Anne K. (David) Hansen-Tonn; nephews, James R. (Sandra) Tessien, Kurt L (Dori) Hansen, Robert D. (Anne) Tessien; fourteen great nieces and nephews; fourteen great-great nieces and nephews; cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leuie and Alma Tessien; nephew, Spec/4 Peter R. Hansen; and brother-in-law, Dr. Peter R. Hansen.

And on a personal note: “As I look back, I thank God that I was born into a Christian family who early brought me to the baptismal font where I became a member of God’s family and for all the faithful pastors, Christian friends and co-workers and loving family members who have been a blessing to me. I am thankful most of all for my Savior who died and rose that I might have eternal life here on earth and now go to be with Him in the Home He has prepared for me. My prayer is that we will all meet in Heaven.”

Donald Lee Vangsness

Funeral services for Don Vangsness were held Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Clinton at 10 a.m.

Minister Beverly McNeill officiated; burial was at St. Pauli Lutheran Cemetery, Clinton.

Donald Lee Vangsness Jr., the son of Donald and Lucille (Kruger) Vangsness, was born May 2, 1952 in Graceville.

Don is survived by his wife, Joanne of Clinton; sons, Peter (Lynn) Vangsness of Clinton, Greg (Jessica Norlund) Vangsness of Clinton, Mark Vangsness of Clinton; step-son, Todd (Kathy); step-grandchildren, Tyler, Daisy, Alex, Madison, Isabelle and Elinor; mother, Lucille of Ortonville; brothers, Robert of Sioux Falls, SD, Richard (Glenyce) of Cleveland, David (Joyce) of Milbank, SD; sisters, Jean (John) Merritt of Ortonville, Mary (Tom) Giese of Starbuck, Linda (Bob) Hartman of Milbank, SD; brothers-in-law, Sevrin (Karen) Huselid of Mesa, AZ, Paul (Terresa) Huselid of Cokato; sister-in-law, Elaine (Ray Marr) Huselid of Burnsville; seven nieces and 18 nephews.

Don is preceded in death, by his father; and his mother and father in-law, Julian and Gladys Huselid.

Harvey Paul Pansch

Funeral Services for Harvey Pansch were held on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Odessa. Reverend Benjamin Pollock officiated, and burial was at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Odessa.

Harvey Paul Pansch was born on Aug. 16, 1920 to Gustav and Ida (Rau) Pansch in Akron Township.

Harvey died on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Ortonville Area Health Services, at the age of 88.

Harvey is survived by his sons: Dennis (Jane) Pansch of Correll, James (Margaret) Pansch of Zimmerman, Dale (Jackie) Pansch of Alexandria, Bill (Suzanne) Pansch of Ortonville; daughters: Cindy Green of Stillwater, and Becky (Ron Germundson) Pansch of St. Paul; grandchildren: Camille (William) Karels, Denise Fisher, Amanda Pansch, Abraham (Megan) Pansch, Cyrus (Deonne) Pansch, Helen (fiancée Mike Mattson) Pansch, Diana Busch, Donna Busch, Kelly Sullivan, Jenna Sullivan, Nathanael Green, Luke Santo, Anna Santo, Anna Germundson, Megan Germundson; great-grandchildren: Vanessa Karels, Magdeline Karels, Margaret Pansch; many nieces and nephews and other extended family members and friends.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents: Gustav and Ida; step-mother Helen; wife Alice; son-in-law David Green; three brothers: Glenn, Harold, and Warren; and one sister Ruby.

Jay Folkens

Funeral services for Jay Folkens were held on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Ortonville.

Pastor Eugene Andrus officiated. Burial was at the Clinton City Cemetery.

Jay Jacob Folkens was born on May 17, 1912 to Siert and Grace (Vogel) Folkens of Malta Township in Clinton.

Jay passed away on May 29, 2009 at the Golden Living Nursing Home in Milbank, SD reaching the age of 97 years.

He is preceded in death by his parents Siert and Grace; his beloved wife Doris, celebrating 65 years together before her passing on May 5, 2007; one sister, Ione Swezey; and five brothers, Barney, Harold, Carl, Ray, and Orland; and son-in-law, Gary Omura.

Jay is survived by his son, Darryl (Pam) Folkens of Roseville; daughter, Jeanette Omura of Maui, HI; four grandchildren, Desiree Omura, Jayson Omura, Paul Folkens, and Jill (Ben) Schmitt; three great grandchildren, Mikayla Flores, Jordynn Omura, and George Schmitt. He is also survived by two sisters, Dorothy (Don) Tesch of Clinton, Leola Lovgren of Ortonville, sisters-in-law Rita Folkens of Milbank, SD, and Isabelle Folkens of Clinton; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Robert “Duck” Hills

Funeral services for Robert “Duck” Hills were held on Monday, June 8, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Beardsley.

Father David Breu officiated. Pallbearers for the service were Dusty Hills, David Hills, Greg Sykora, Francis Sykora, Donny Sykora, and Keith “Skeeter” Elrite. Burial was at the Beardsley Community Cemetery.

Robert Lewis Hills was born on May 26, 1929, to Ore and Hazel (Doschadis) Hills in Beardsley.

Robert died on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at MeritCare in Fargo, ND, having lived to reach the age of 80 years.

Duck is survived by his son Rob “Boo” Hills of Beardsley; daughter Kerri (Tom) Herberg of Beardsley, granddaughters: Melissa (Eric) Christianson of Fergus Falls, and Ann Herberg of Beardsley; siblings: Bonnie (Jerry) Hendricks of Alexandria, Larry Hills of Beardsley, Carol (Dean) Palmer of Barnesville, Linda Sibson of Moorhead, Pat (John) Stoick of Hutchinson, Ken (Bitsy) Hills of Kingman, AZ, Ginny (Jim) Hennessy of Graceville, Katy (Dale) Sykora of Beardsley, Joyce Bogenreif of Morris, Mary (Willie) Ewert of Fairbault, Arlene (Willie) Duetsch of Eden, SD, Audrey (Elwood) Opitz of Luverne; many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

Duck was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; one sister; and two brothers-in-law.

Nellie E. Johnson

Nellie E. Johnson was born in Creston, IA in 1925 to Cleo and Myrtle Reeve. She died in Helena, MT on July 6, 2009.

She married Robert G. Johnson in 1946, and they spent 61 years together until his death in 2008.

Nellie was a homemaker and gardener, but most of all she loved to dance. She had many friends in Ortonville, Fergus Falls, Jamestown, ND, Milbank, SD and many new friends at the Waterford on Saddle Drive in Helena, MT.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert, brothers Rex, Max, Joe, and Bob, and sister Betty. She is survived by her brothers Perry, Earl, and Bill, children Nancy, Donald, Judith, and Robert Jr., grandchildren Lynn, Alex, Drew, and Maria, and great-grandchildren Jacob and Mikaela.

She is also survived by good friend, soul mate, and dancing partner Otto “Bud” Smith. Thanks, Bud, for helping make Mom’s life happier and more meaningful during her years in Helena.

The family also wishes to thank the staff and residents at the Waterford for their contribution to Nellie’s active and enjoyable life in Montana.

A memorial service will be held at the Waterford in Helena, MT at a later date. To comply with her wishes, no other services will be held. Burial will be in Backus. Condolences may be sent to Nancy Bodmer, P.O. Box 470226, Winston, MT, 59647, and they will be shared with the family.

Elmer W. Barwin

Elmer W. Barwin, age 81, of Moorhead, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, at Triumph Hospital, Fargo, ND.

Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, at 11 a.m., in Cormorant Lutheran Church, rural Lake Park.

Interment will be held at the Cormorant Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Elmer was born May 14, 1928, to Fred and Pauline (Wallman) Barwin in Ortonville. He grew up and attended school in Ortonville, graduating from high school in 1947. After high school Elmer enlisted in the National Guard and was activated in Jan. of 1951. He served until Nov. of 1952 when he moved back to Ortonville and later to Morris.

On Sept. 6, 1953, he married Harriet Halvorson at Cormorant Lutheran Church, in rural Lake Park. Together they lived in Morris before making their home in Cottage Grove, and starting a family. Elmer and Harriet lived in Cottage Grove for 25 years before moving to Lake Ida, rural Lake Park, in 1985. Elmer worked at various supermarkets throughout his career and retired in 1991 after 42 years as a meat cutter. Elmer was a proud father and grandfather and will be dearly missed.

Elmer is survived by his children, Bruce (Dawne) Barwin of Thompson, ND, Cynthia Barwin of Inver Grove Heights, Karl Barwin of Mora; grandchildren, Timothy and Matthew Barwin; and brother, Boyd Barwin of Groton, SD.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet; parents, Fred and Pauline; and brothers, Robert and George.
