Richard L. Piechowski

Richard L. Piechowski, 80, Browns Valley, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at the Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Browns Valley with Father Joe Vandeberg officiating.

Music will be provided by organist Norma Jung and vocalists Sue Sykora and Stacey Borgheiinck.

Burial will be at a later date in the Holden Lutheran Cemetery, rural Beardsley. Pallbearers will be Dale Sykora, Donny Sykora, Denny Sykora, Terry Miller, Donny Murphy, and Rodey Ewald.

Visitation will be Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church. The Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt, SD, is in charge of the arrangements.

Richard Laverne Piechowski was born July 17, 1929, in Browns Valley to Joe R. and Elizabeth (Haanen) Piechowski. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. After attending rural school through the eighth grade, he farmed with his parents in rural Beardsley. Richard also worked road construction in the summer and his life-long passion of commercial fishing. He worked side by side with his dad and uncles in the commercial fishing business whether it was seining underneath the ice for rough fish or hoop netting bullheads during the other seasons as well as skinning bullheads with his fishing buddies.

On Jan. 5, 1949, he was united in marriage to Gloria Mae Kvatum at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Browns Valley. They farmed in the Beardsley area, later moving into town and then eventually moving to Browns Valley.

After he semi-retired from the commercial fishing business, he helped the Sykora family custom combine from Oklahoma to the Canadian border. Everywhere you went with him, he always knew someone. Traveling to Wyoming on family vacations was always special because he would “supervise” us going down the road. We were never bored on these road trips because he would tell us what road he had worked on, what lake he had fished on, and where they had parked the campers and combines during the combining season.

Richard passed away peacefully on Jan. 6, 2010, at the Fergus Falls hospital. For now we are apart and we miss you a great deal, but we have not lost you. Your presence lives on in our souls and dances in our minds with each passing moment.

Survivors include four children, Gracia Cardwell of Casper, WY, Candice and John Ohnstad of Casper, Kristi and Jeff Gades of Appleton, and Alan and Christa Piechowski of Knoxville, TN; six grandchildren, Tanya (Cardwell) and Jon Wassink, Marc Cardwell and special friend Nicole Langer, Andrea (Ohnstad) and Kyle Tuma, Collin Gades, Katlyn Gades, and Emerald LaFromboise; five great-grandchildren, Brandon, Darrick, and Calob Wassink, Tristan Tuma and Bryton Loy; sisters, Virgil Doschadis of Beardsley, and Dolores and Bob Halvorson of Granite Falls; his special friend Dorothy Christensen of Browns Valley; as well as many friends and family.

Blessed be his memory.
