Alice Ruth Biondi
Alice Ruth Biondi, who was born in Proctor and graduated from its schools, died Mon., July 7, 2003, in a Duluth hospital. She was 76.

She was born to Frank and Mary Gonyea Shunk. Alice worked as a waitress at the former Zelda and Lemon Tree restaurants. She enjoyed fishing and hunting and time at the cabin with Enrico 'Hank', her soulmate and constant companion; and also enjoyed socializing at the mall with friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and sister Elizabeth Caril.

Alice is survived by husband Enrico 'Hank', son David (Kathleen) Noponen of Pike Lake, stepdaughters Gloria (Monty) Johnson of Pocatello, Idaho and Kathe (Robert) Knierman of Snohomish, Wash., brother James (Myrtle) Shunk of Proctor, sisters Mary Lou Leland of Duluth, June Clevenger of Many, La., a granddaughter, two grandsons, three great-granddaughters, aunt Josephine Luczak of Hermantown, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Burial was at Oneota Cemetery.

James Meritt Alden
James Meritt Alden, 61, who grew up in Proctor and was a 1960 PHS graduate, died July 6, 2003, in Bigfork, Minn.

He was born March 19, 1942, in Bigfork to Ashley and Frances Alden. He was a member of the Perry Heide VFW Post 9703, Marcell, Minn. and the American Legion 2720 of Deer River, Minn. He served in Vietnam in 1966 with the U.S. Marine Corps, where he earned a Purple Heart.

He was preceded in death by his sister Frances Alden.

James is survived by his wife of 36 years Paula of Marcell, sister Marjory Gonzalez of Battle Creek, Mich., two sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, special friend Bubba, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held Saturday.

Eileen Mae (Darker) Peterson
Services were held for Eileen Mae (Darker) Peterson, age 78, of Carlton, formerly of Proctor. She died Sat., July 19, 2003 at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton.

She was born in International Falls on April 6, 1925 to William and Velmar (Smith) Darker. Eileen was a homemaker and had worked at the Hotel Duluth and at the Pickwick. She loved bowling and singing and she volunteered at nursing homes, singing for the residents.

Eileen was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Roy and Robert Darker, two sons: Ryan, as an infant in 1958, and Jeffrey Dickey in 1978, her daughter Christine Theisen on May 22, 2003.

Survivors include her husband, Russell of Carlton, two daughters: Cynthia R. (Phillip) Liupakka of Scanlon, Eileen D. (Wayne) Laakso of Proctor; two sons: Daniel R. Dickey of Proctor, and Steven Dickey of Duluth; a son in law, Peter Theisen of Cloquet; two sisters: Lucille Parzych and Carol (Roger) Jackson, both of Duluth; two brothers: Gerald Darker of Duluth, and William (Joyce) Darker of South Range, WI.; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Burial will be in Bethany Cemetery in Hermantown. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

May Florence Larsen Legutko Stoll
May Florence Larsen Legutko Stoll, a Proctor High School graduate of 1939, died peacefully on Wed., July 16, 2003, at the age of 82.

She was a resident of the Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center in Duluth for almost two years. Her previous home of 33 years was in Twig. She also graduated from the Duluth Business University. May worked in a Civil Service Supervisory position in the Administrative Office of the Pentagon for the Navy Department in Washington, D.C. Then she was employed as Executive Secretary in the Research and Development division at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio, during the development of the F111 Fighter Aircraft. Finally, she was employed as Executive Secretary by the Conseur Townscend Associates in Duluth during the planning and development of the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District. In 1944, May married U.S. Army Sergeant Louis Legutko in Washington, D.C. They had two children, John Legutko of Duluth and Ragna Victoria Salo of Twig. In 1952, in Springfield, Ohio, she married John C. Stoll, a Technical Rep for the Eastman Kodak Co. They had four children, James Franklin Stoll and Diana Louise Armstrong, both of Minneapolis, and twins Donna May LaDuke of Twig and David Alaric Stoll of Newport News, Va.

May was preceded in death by her daughter Ragna Victoria Salo in 2001.

May is survived by five children, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, two sisters, four nephews, and two nieces.

Interment was at Grand Lake Cemetery.

Edward J. 'Eddie' LaDean
Terrie Jo Gilderman, wife of Glen, is in bereavement following the death of her father, Edward J. 'Eddie' LaDean. He died Wed., July 16, 2003, in a Duluth hospice. He was 71.

He was born in Duluth and had attended St. Clements, Lincoln and Denfeld High School. Eddie served in the Korean War with the 739th AAA Gun Bn. He had worked at Sterling Motors, Foremost Dairy, Famous Foods and later retired as a Mail Carrier with the U.S. Postal Service after 30 years. He married Mary Lou Dwyer in Duluth on April 23, 1955.

Eddie is also survived by his wife, two sons, four grandchildren, a sister, stepsister, sister-in-law, and many aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Burial was at Oneota Cemetery.

George F. Roufs
Jim Roufs of Twig is saddened by the death of his father, George F. Roufs. He died Sat., July 19, 2003, in a Duluth hospital. He was 86.

George was born in Victoria, Minn. and served with the U.S. Army's 109th Engineers Battalion in Ireland, Africa and Italy during WW II. In 1948., He married Madeline Bethune. George was a crane operator and a 50-year member of the International Operation Engineers Local 49.

Survivors also include his wife Madeline, another son, three daughters, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Interment was at Calvary Cemetery.

Alford Lawrence Aus
Shelly Aus of Proctor is mourning the death of her father, Alford Lawrence Aus. The Cloquet resident died Thurs., July 10, 2003, after battling emphysema. He was 78.

Alfred was born in Duluth. An Army veteran of WW II, he married Lorraine Bertha Huttunen on Dec. 21, 1944. He had worked as a longtime truck driver and was a retired mechanic.

Survivors also include his wife of 58 years, Lorraine of Chris Jensen in Duluth, another daughter, four sons, a brother, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Burial was at Oneota Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Dennis 'D.W.' Anderson
Leah Spicer of Saginaw is mourning the death of her father, Dennis 'D.W.' Anderson. He died in a Duluth hospital following a battle with cancer. He was 62.

Dennis was born in Duluth. He attended and graduated from Central High School in 1958. Dennis worked for Dunlop Tile, and was a civilian employee of the Minnesota Air National Guard retiring in 1987.

Dennis is also survived by his wife of 39 years Barbara, his parents, a son, a brother, and two step-grandchildren.

Interment was in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Gerald Waldholm
Gerald J. Waldholm, who was the only attorney who had an office in Proctor, died Tues., July 29, 2003 in a Duluth hospital. He was 41.

He was born Sept. 21, 1961. Gerald was a graduate of Proctor High School, UMD where he received Cum Laude honors, and William Mitchell Law School. He was a member of the Proctor Chamber of Commerce and a life member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Proctor.

He is survived by his parents Gerald and Donna, and a brother Michael, all of Proctor.

Funeral services are pending.

Richard Warde 'Dick' Anderson
Services were held earlier this week for former Caribou Lake Association President Richard Warde 'Dick' Anderson. The Twig resident died Fri., July 25, 2003, in a Duluth hospital. He was 77.

Dick was born in Duluth, and was a 1943 graduate of Duluth Central High School. He joined the Seabees and served over two years in the South Pacific during WW II. After his military service, he attended Duluth Junior College and UMD, and then began his long career as a grain merchandiser as a member of the Duluth Board of Trade. He then worked in Buffalo, N.Y., Springfield, Ill., and Minneapolis, all with Pillsbury, and finished his career with U.S. Commodities in Wayzata, Minn. Dick was a member of First Lutheran Church, volunteered at the Damiano Center and did mission work for First Lutheran; past president of the board of directors at Park Hill Cemetery; committee chairman for the Class of '43 Reunion; member of the Arrowhead Interfaith Council Chaplaincy Committee; Sons of Norway; and the Lake Avenue Loafers.

He is survived by his wife Carol, daughter Kris (Mark) Fraune of Apple Valley, sons Carter (Theresa) of Inver Grove Heights and Clayton (fiancee Megan) of Burnsville, two brothers, two sisters, seven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Inurnment was at Park Hill Cemetery. Military honors were accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Peter J. Oppel
Peter J. Oppel, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1962, died Mon., July 21, 2003, in his Lake Nichols home. He was 58.

He was born in Duluth, and went on to earn a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 1966. After his schooling Peter entered the Air Force, serving his country in Vietnam in 1969, and was discharged with the rank of Captain in 1971. Peter had worked as an economist for the State of Minnesota, Department of Job Services in Duluth and St. Cloud from 1971 to 1985. Then he went to work for Minnesota Power in Duluth as economist from 1985 until 2003. He was a member of the City of Duluth Workforce Investment Board from 1985 to 2000, and the Northeastern Minnesota Workforce Investment Board from 1985 to 2002. He was also a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Canyon, Minn.

He is survived by his sons Christian (Heather) and Thomas, and daughter Sarah (Maurice), all of Duluth, four grandchildren, his mother and stepfather, two sisters and two brothers.

Charlotte Marie (Little) Johns
Charlotte Marie (Little) Johns of Lakeshore Lutheran Home, died Sun., July 27, 2003, in Duluth. She lived with multiple sclerosis for fifty years. She was 79.

She was born in Irma, Wis. and graduated from Merrill High School. She married Clarence J. Johns in 1947, and as an Army family they lived in Eau Claire, Stanley, Chippewa Falls and Tomahawk, Wis.; Highland Park, Ill.; Bad Toelz, Germany; Faribault, Minn.; and moved to Duluth in 1964.

Charlotte worked as a library assistant at Proctor High School and served as secretary for her bowling league. She was a member of Forbes United Methodist Church in Proctor. She was an excellent bowler and enjoyed reading, knitting, watching Minnesota Twins baseball, and spending time with her family and her special dog 'Pudgy'.

She is preceded in death by her husband Clarence, her parents Calista and Emmett Little, her brother Edwin 'Bud' Little, and her sister Marjorie Coffman.

She is survived by her son Dr. Alan M. (Dorothy) Johns of Duluth, two granddaughters, a brother, three sisters-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Wednesday. Burial was at Oneota Cemetery.
