Gertrude Gastecki
Gertrude Gastecki, age 66, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died October 31, 1997, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held November 3, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls with Father Leroy Kremer officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Gertrude was born in Blue Earth, MN on August 3, 1931, to the late Severt and Carmen (Engerset) Newgard. She grew up in the Blue Earth area and moved to Little Falls during her high school years. She was united in marriage with John Gastecki on November 22, 1950, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Her importance in life was being a homemaker and being with her family. Gertrude was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary of Little Falls and the Christian Mothers. She volunteered her time with the Boy Scouts, her church, and was very active in the community.
Survivors include sons, Greg and wife Lori of Grand Marais, MN, Bob and wife Bonnie of Wadena, MN, Tim and wife Brenda of Corey, PA, Ken and companion Ken of Onamia, MN, Rich and wife Karen of Roseville, MN, Dave and wife Connie of Sobieski, MN; daughters, Jean Whitford and husband Ed of Little Falls, Jan Erwin and husband Tom of Little Falls, Carol Doucette and husband Kevin of Fort Ripley, MN; a sister, Elaine Janssens of South Bend, IN; 21 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; and a brother, Ed; and two sisters, Bernice and Mary Ann.
Casketbearers were Lisa Whitford, Trish Doucette, Sara Erwin, Jenny and Jackie Gastecki, and Jessie Doucette.
Jerry Jerdee
Benson, MN
Jerry Jerdee, age 75, of Benson, died Wednesday at the Golden Living Center - Meadow Lane in Benson, Minnesota.
Funeral services were held on, Monday, October 15th, 2012, at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson, with Rev. Roger Olness officiating. Burial will be in the Benson City Cemetery.
Gerald “Jerry” Edward Jerdee was born on April 17, 1937 in Enderlin, North Dakota, the son of Edward Melvin and Helen Ann (Pederson) Jerdee. He was baptized on December 4, 1937 and confirmed on June 24, 1951 at Zion Lutheran Church in Enderlin, ND. He grew up in Enderlin where he graduated from grade and high school. He then graduated from Jamestown University. Jerry taught math and coached in Clinton, MN from 1959 to 1966. He taught math and coached basketball, football and track in Benson, MN from 1966 to 1999. On July 27, 1955, he was united in marriage to Grace Marie Wefald. This union was blessed with four children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Together they were able to share in 57 years of marriage.
Jerry was content with the simple things of life. He thoroughly enjoyed his children and grandchildren, watching sports - especially college - on TV, Western movies, John Wayne, politics, good music - everyone from the Gaithers to Hank Williams to the Rolling Stones, a good steak (nothing flaming!), gardening, and reminiscing with former coaches, athletes, and students. Jerry was a member of the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association, the Jamestown College J. Club, the Ushers Club at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church, and was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame at Jamestown College.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Grace; children, Barbara (Robin) Lamppa of Fargo, ND, Diane (Ron) Hills of Dilworth, MN, and Robert Jerdee of Benson; grandchildren, Kari Khan, Kristiina Lamppa, Kelli Lamppa, Rachelle Brown, Ashley Brown, Miranda Brown, Tate Jerdee, Maria Jerdee, Amanda Beals, Steven Beals, Teagan Overturf, Victoria Arnold, and Darrell Brown; great-grandchild, Nolan Gerald; and many other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death are his son, Steven Jerdee; granddaughter, Nicole; parents, Edward and Helen Jerdee; grandparents, Andrew and Ingeborg Jerdee, Hans and Mary Pederson.
Angel M. Haugen
Angel M. Haugen, age 69, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died October 29, 1997, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.
Private services were held November 3 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls. Burial was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at Camp Ripley.
Angel M. Haugen was born on October 12, 1928, in Argyle, MN to the late Henry and Laura (Bacon) Dufault. She grew up in the Argyle area, attending school there and completed her schooling in Grand Forks, ND. She was united in marriage to Carl M. Haugen on June 10, 1947, in Grand Forks. The couple made their home in various locations before settling in the Little Falls area where they have resided for the past 23 years. Angel worked as a nurse’s aide at the Lutheran Senior Citizens Home in Little Falls for a number of years before retiring. Angel’s life was centered around the Bible and the wonderful name of Jesus Christ. Her most cherished purpose was to have a devoted and supportive love for her family to which she was devoted. Angel wanted nothing else but the happiness of those she loved, even if it meant self-sacrifice on her part. She is remembered and well-known for her crafts and crocheting.
Survivors include her husband, Carl M. Haugen of Little Falls; children, Micheal Haugen of Minneapolis, MN, Renae Melzark and husband Philip of Allenton, WI, David Haugen and wife Julie of Anoka, MN, Karen Henze and husband, Richard of Fort Worth, TX and Laurie Rush and husband Ed of Little Falls; brothers, Bill Dufault of Worthington, MN and Russel Dufault of Folsom, CA; sister, Betty Sten of Stephen, MN and grandchildren, Shannon, Christa, Dustin, Jeff, Jayne, Rick, Roy, Ryan, Jacob and Abigail. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Dick Dufault and sisters, Glorie and Darlene Dufault.
Pallbearers were Micheal Haugen, David Haugen, Rich Henze III, Dustin Melzark, Jeffrey Haugen and Shannon Haugen.
Edwin D. Santala
Edwin D. Santala, age 78, a resident of Little Falls, MN died October 31, 1997, at the Lutheran Senior Citizens Home in Little Falls.
Funeral services were held November 3 at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Richard Bolling officiating. Interment was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at Camp Ripley. Military rites were conducted by the Little Falls American Legion Post #46 and V.F.W. Post #1112.
Edwin D. Santala was born on February 26, 1919, in Eveleth, MN to the late Edward and Susan (Harri) Santala. He grew up in the Eveleth area and graduated from Eveleth High School. He attended two years of college at Eveleth Junior College. Edwin then entered the U.S. Army and ran the prison stockade in France. He was united in marriage to Bernice Oja on January 14, 1946, in Duluth, MN. Edwin was a sales supervisor for DeLaval for 28 years. He then semi-retired and sold cars for 122 Motors in Little Falls. Edwin and his wife have lived in Little Falls since 1959. He entered the Lutheran Senior Citizens Home in August of 1992 where he resided until his death. Edwin was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Little Falls, Little Falls American Legion Post #46 and Little Falls V.F.W. Post #1112.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Santala of Little Falls; sons, Chuck Santala and wife Faye of Little Falls, Rick Santala and wife Nancy of Denver, CO, Ken Santala and wife Linda of Little Falls and Tom Santala and wife Diane of St. Cloud, MN; sister, Edna Hill of Virginia, MN; and eight grandchildren, Sara, Ricky, Jeremy, Mike, Bradley, Josh, Mindy and Benji Santala.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and one sister.
Pallbearers were Lambert Scherping, Clayton Burgardt, Pete Brutcher, Jim Atkinson, Robert Hamalainen and David Hamalainen.
Yvonne Williams
Yvonne Nelda (Fox) Williams, age 59, a resident of Jonesboro, IL, died October 26, 1997, at her home in Jonesboro.
Funeral services were October 29 at the Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna, IL, with Rev. Nyle Forby and Rev. Tony Lipford officiating. Interment was in the Anna Cemetery.
Yvonne was born April 29, 1938, at Brainerd, MN, the daughter of Roy and Nelda (Brandt) Fox. She was a member of the Water Valley Christian Church and was a founder and former administrator of Haven House in Anna.
Survivors include her four daughters, Debbie Wenger of Jonesboro, Kathy Lipford of Murray, KY., Brenda Shekell of Anna, Lana Kay Glasco of Anna; two sons, Rick Williams of Jonesboro, Kenny Reese of Key West, FL; one brother, Virgil Fox of Little Falls, MN; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces, LeAnn Sands and Leslie Fox, and two special friends, Linda Hopp and Pat McRaven.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two grandchildren, Eric L. Yancey and Joshua Cain Williams.
William M. Meyer
William M. Meyer, age 96, a resident of Pierz, MN died October 31, 1997, at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held November 3 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz with the Rev. Kenneth Brenny officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
William M. Meyer was born August 23, 1901, in the village of Pierz, MN to the late Mike and Maggie (Neuman) Meyer. He grew up in Pierz and, on October 23, 1923, was united in marriage to Catherine Hoheisel in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz. Together, the couple farmed in Pierz Township, Morrison County for over 31 years. After leaving the farm in 1954, the couple built a home in Pierz and resided there and William worked on road construction. On October 30, 1987, Catherine died and, in the spring of 1988, William became a resident of St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz, residing there until his death. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz.
Survivors include his sons, Leander M. Meyer and wife Catherine of Pierz, Ephriam Meyer and wife Bernice of Cushing, MN; grandchildren, Gary W. Meyer, Mary Schraut, Cheryl Silva, Clyde, Jerone E., David, Kathy and Duane Meyer and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, son, Roger Meyer in 1984; daughter-in-law, Francis Meyer in 1986 and grandsons, Gregory, LeRoy and Leon Meyer; brother, Alfred Meyer; sisters, Anna Stangl, Catherine Gruber and Matilda Zeigler.
Casketbearers were Gary W., Mark, Clyde, Jerome, and Kathy Meyer and Sheila Olund.
William D. Heroux
William D. Heroux, age 87, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died November 2, 1997, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN.
Mass of Christian Burial was held November 4 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls with Father Leroy Kremer officiating. Interment was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at Camp Ripley with military rites conducted by the Little Falls American Legion Post 46.
William D. Heroux was born on July 20, 1910, in Little Falls, Morrison County, MN, to the late Mitchel and Clara (Leduc) Heroux. He grew up in Little Falls and received his formal education in the Little Falls Public School system. He ran a small dry cleaning shop in Little Falls before entering the U.S. Army in August of 1942. He was honorably discharged from the Army in November of 1944. Following his service in the Army, he made his home in Seattle, WA for 45 years where he worked for Boeing and the dry cleaning industry. He moved back to Little Falls in the late 1980s and lived in the Pine Grove Manor apartments. He entered St. Otto’s Care Center in June of 1997 where he resided until his death.
Survivors include his brothers, Art Heroux and wife Dodie of Little Falls, Archie Heroux of Little Falls and Hubert Heroux of Little Falls; sister, Mary Sargent and husband Donald of Minneapolis, MN; nephew, Gerald Kieley and wife Vivian of Little Falls who cared for him for many years and many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.
Pallbearers were George, Bob and Jim Heroux, Michel Kieley, Bob Odette and Joe Gessel.
Clarence Landgren
Clarence Robert (Bob) Landgren, died on October 17, 1997, at the age of 75.
He was buried in the Hibbing Park Cemetery on October 22.
Bob was born in Duluth, MN, but was raised in Hibbing, MN. He graduated from Hibbing High School and Hibbing Junior College before attending and graduating from Iowa State University in chemical engineering where he received many honors. He worked for Union Oil of California during World War II, but moved back to Minnesota to the University of Minnesota where he received a PhD degree in chemical engineering in 1950. Bob was an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland for several years before moving to New Jersey to work at Bell Telephone Laboratories at Murray Hill. His research was in a group that worked with Dr. William Shockley (a Nobel Prize winner) on crystal growth for the first transistors. Bob was awarded a number of patents at that time. Bob’s career took him on to Exxon Oil Company in New York City where he worked in many areas of the company during the rest of his professional career. For five years, he was recognized by being in Who’s Who Scientists in the East. He was also Chairman of the Admissions Committee of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and received the award, American Institute of Chemical Engineers Fellow, which was an honorarium. When Bob retired early, he bought a 200 acre farm in Swanville, MN. Through the CRP program, he planted thousands of trees. He was interested in his new community and was on the TriCap Nutrition Council and represented Morrison County on the Region V Area on Aging for several years. For a number of years he was a volunteer income tax consultant for the elderly. He also had belonged to the local Lions Club. Bob and his wife Alice had moved to Roseville, MN after living in Swanville, MN for 22 years. While in Roseville he became a representative to the Rosepointe Council at the apartment house for 125 Active Seniors where he lived.
Survivors include his wife and three sons, Cory and Yvonne of Rochester, MN, Randall and Susan of Kalmar, Sweden, and Ryder and Carol of Maplewood, MN; his brother, George, of Wilmette, IL; seven grandchildren and four great-granddaughters in Anchor-age, AK. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Robin.
