Arlene F. Hammitt
Karen Amborn of Saginaw is saddened by the death of her sister Arlene F. Hammitt. The Cloquet resident died Sun., Apr. 18, 2004, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. She was 65.

She was born in Cloquet. Arlene lived most of her life in the Cloquet and Carlton County area and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Wrenshall, where she served as choir director and had been active with the church youth groups.

She was preceded in death by her father Roy E. Goad.

She is also survived by her mother Dorothy M. Goad of Cloquet, three sons, one daughter, one brother, another sister, 11 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren,

Interment services were at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.

Barbara Ann MacDonald
Services will be held today (Thurs.) for Barbara 'Barb' Ann MacDonald, 57, of Proctor. She died Mon., May 3, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

Barb was born in Duluth to Robert and Lillian (Kellet) Vanneste on April 10, 1947. She graduated from Proctor High School, and was a life long resident of Proctor.

Barb retired in 2001 after 12 years with Daugherty Hardware. Barb loved to knit and crochet. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of the Proctor Moose and the Proctor Legion Auxiliary.

Barb is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas, in 1996 and her mother, Lillian.

Surviving are her father, Robert and step-mother, Blanche Vanneste of Proctor; daughters, Kim (Steve) Elmer of Toivola, and Lori (Randy) Reinke of Alborn; a sister, Terrie (Steven) Carlson of Proctor; four grandchildren, Holly, Emily, Jack and Katelyn.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. service Thursday in Bell Brothers Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery.

Michael R. Drazich
Michael R. 'Mike' Drazich, who was a community activist in Proctor died Wed., May 5, 2004 at Lake Haven Manor surrounded by his family. He was 88.

He was born in Indiana Harbor, Indiana on Jan. 5, 1916 to Samuel and Anna Drazich. He was a World War II Army veteran serving as an engineer in the Pacific. A Proctor resident since 1946, he worked as a police officer, and then as an electrician for the DM&IR Railroad for 34 years, retiring in 1978. He married Dorothy Hanson on Oct. 29, 1977 in Duluth. He was a member of Forbes United Methodist Church where he was a certified lay speaker and was a past director for the Northeast District of Minnesota of Lay speakers. Mike was involved with Scouting for over 34 years and was the Scout Master for Troop 85 for 14 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 71, the Proctor Area Community Center, board member of the Proctor Museum, Euclid Masonic Lodge 198 A.M. & A.F., Trinity Chapter OES, Proctor Moose 1302, Charter member of the Spirit Valley Kiwanis Club where he was past secretary. Mike taught Fire Arm Safety Classes for over 18 years, volunteered at the Depot and Railroad Museum, served on (ACT) Area Churches Together in Proctor, City of Proctor and the DM & IR Railroad 100th Anniversary Committee, and was the Honored Rail for the 2002 Proctor Hoghead Festival.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George and Steve; a son, Michael, and his wife Alice Ward Drazich.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Mary Ann (Jack) Suliin of Proctor and Helen (Angelo) Giacomin of Valparaiso, Ind.; three sons, Bill (Lois) Drazich of Cloquet, Paul (Debbie) Drazich of Warsaw, Ind., and Bob Drazich of Rosemont, Minn.; a sister, Dorothy Victor of Hobart, Ind.; two stepdaughters, Susan (Dan) Seftick of Afton, Minn., and Barbara (Craig) Skone of St. Paul; a stepson, Scott Hanson of Hibbing, Minn.; 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. Memorials to Forbes United Methodist Church preferred.

Virginia Mae Marden Price
Services were held last week for Virginia Mae Marden Price. The Third St., Proctor resident, died Wednesday, May 5, 2004 in St. Mary's Medical Center. She was 77.

She was born on Sept. 22, 1926 in Duluth to John and Agnes (Steinkugler) Marden and was a Duluth and Proctor resident for most of her life. She was a 1944 graduate of Denfeld High School. In earlier years, she was an employee of the Duluth Herald and News Tribune. Virginia married Mike Price on July 31, 1949 in Hibbing. She was a former member of St. James Catholic Church, Proctor American Legion Post No. 106 Auxiliary and had been an election judge in Proctor. Virginia enjoyed her grandchildren, social life and being with friends.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Michele Ann Anderson on June 18, 2002; husband, Mike on Dec. 21, 2002; and her parents.

Survivors include her daughter, Peggy (Dave) Johnson of Duluth; son-in-law, Mark Anderson of Proctor; grandchildren, Jared Anderson of Proctor, Beth (Tony) Hanni of Cromwell and Riley and Emily Johnson of Duluth; her twin sister, Jean Olson of Cottage Grove; several nieces and nephews and many friends. Virginia will be remembered for her strong spirit, generosity and good humor.

Inurnment is in Oneota Cemetery.

Katharine Marie Dahlman
Margaret (Howard) Taylor of Midway is mourning the death of her mother Katharine Marie Dahlman. The Cromwell resident died Fri., Apr. 30, 2004 in Cloquet Community Memorial Nursing Home. She was 85.

She is also survived by another daughter Jennie (Robert) Hanson of Wright; three sons, Glen (Anne) Dahlman of Petaluma, Calif., John (Mary) Dahlman of Thornton, Colo. and Mark (Linda) Dahlman of Wright; a sister, Irene Bolstad of Floodwood; a brother, James Tveit of Washington; 12 grandchildren, five great grandchildren with a new great grandchild due in May and seven step great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends.

Gladys Opal Johnson
Gladys Opal Johnson, who was a charter member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Twig, died peacefully May 4, 2004 in St. Luke's Hospital with her family by her side. She was 89.

The Saginaw resident was born in Hermantown, Minn., on March 23, 1915, to Gust and Bertha Kusch. Gladys married Ambrose Johnson in July, 1938 and were married for 55 wonderful years. She was a great cook and enjoyed gardening and farming. Gladys was a member and past president of the Lutheran Church Women of Bethlehem.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1993; sister, Helen Wallace; and brothers, Richard, Mason and Vernon Kusch.

Gladys is survived by her son, Charles (Kay) Johnson, of Cloquet; daughters, Helen (Charles) Kallberg, Ruth (Wayne) Waller and Margaret (Brad) Van Arman, all of Saginaw; sister, Margaret (Hugh) Erickson; brothers, John (Mary Lou) Kusch and Marvin (Joanne) Kusch, all of Duluth; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

Burial is in Bethany Cemetery.

Alan David Toepke
Stacey Nelson, the daughter of Warren and Carol Nelson and sister of Scott (Jen) Nelson of Proctor, is mourning the loss of her fiancé Alan David Toepke of Bozeman, Mont. He died Sat., Apr. 24, 2004, of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. He was 30.

Alan was born on Oct. 9, 1973 in Minneapolis, the son of David and Sharon (Colton) Toepke. He lived in Winona, Sandstone, Longville and Brainerd, Minn., Wilmington, Ill., and Bozeman. A 1992 graduate of Winona Senior High School, he graduated from Winona State University in 1999. Al was previously employed by Winona Knits, Watkins, DNR Trails & Waterways, MCC Crew, Rainbow Ranch (Big Sky), and as a supervisor for Men at Work. He was most recently employed by the U.S. Government Midewin Hot Shot Crew, working to contain forest fires throughout the U.S.

Al was preceded in death by his brother Steve, and his grandfathers Kenneth Toepke and Clifford Colton.

He is survived by his parents David and Sharon Toepke of Winona, sisters Beth Toepke of Longville, Minn. and Linda Toepke of Idaho, grandmothers Violet Toepke and Jean Colton, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Undesignated memorials will be used for promoting wildlife habitat, Pheasants Forever of North Dakota and/or Camp Olson, Longville, Minn.

Frank A. Reed
Raymond Reed of Pike Lake is saddened by the death of his brother, Frank A. Reed. The Cloquet resident died Mon., May 10, 2004, in Duluth. He was 83.

He was born in Wrenshall, Minn. He graduated from Wrenshall High School and married Ruth Newton in 1941. Frank entered the U.S. Army during World War II, where he served in the Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a lifelong area resident and spent many years working at U.S. Steel in Duluth. He was also the manager of the Hobby Shop at the Duluth Air Base until the Air Base was closed.

Frank is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Ruth; one brother, Phillip Reed; and one sister, Gina Switzer.

He is survived by his son H. Frank (Jeannie) Reed of Duvall, Wash., two granddaughters, one great-grandson, four other brothers, one sister and numerous nieces and nephews.

The visitation will resume today, Thurs., May 13, 2004, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service also at Nelson Funeral Care, followed by a luncheon in the fellowship room. Entombment services will be at Sunrise Memorial Park in Hermantown following the luncheon.

Frances (Strlekar) Moroni
Frances (Strlekar) Moroni, who taught in Proctor for four years, died Mon., May 17, 2004, in Ely Bloomenson Commun-ity Hospital. The Eveleth resident was 95.

She was born in Eveleth and graduated from Eveleth High School, Eveleth Junior College and from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill. in 1930.

Frances was married in Eveleth to Peter Moroni on June 11, 1934. They lived in Ely, Minn., for 40 years where she was active in the National Council of Catholic Women and St. Anthony's Church. Frances was an active member of Ely's Music and Drama Club and a former member of the American Association of University Women. While living in Ely, she taught English in Babbitt from 1961 to 1974.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Peter in 1976, three brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by four daughters, a son, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Interment will be in Eveleth Cemetery.

Ruth Eastman Sellwood
Barbara Skog of Solway is mourning the death of her mother, Ruth Eastman Sellwood. She died Tues., May 18, 2004, at St. Luke's Hospital. She was 91.

Ruth was born in Duluth and graduated from Duluth Denfeld High School. She married Fred H. Sellwood in 1937 in Duluth. Ruth worked at Basgen Photography and retired in 1977 from Amundson Dental Office. She was a member of Duluth Bible Church and a former member of Business Professional Woman's Association and Order of Eastern Star, Trinity Chapter.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Fred H. Sellwood, who died in 1950, and two brothers.

Ruth is also survived by a son, half-brother, six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and six special nieces and nephews.

Burial was at Sunrise Memorial Park.
