ESSER
Jessie Renfrow Esser, 80, Boonville, died Nov. 4, 2000.
She was born Jan. 9, 1920, in Wooldridge, a daughter of Oscar and Mattie Odom Renfrow. She was married Nov. 25, 1941, to Joseph G. Esser, who survives at the home.
A 1937 graduate of Boonville High School, she was a cosmetologist. During World War II, she worked as a radio assembler at Aircraft Accessories, a subsidiary of North American. From 1945 through 1978, she was a homemaker and community volunteer. She lived in Brookfield, Excelsior Springs, Fulton, Rolla and Jefferson City. In 1980, she returned to Boonville and she was active in Friends of Historic Boonville, Boonville Women's Club and many bridge clubs. She was a longtime member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
Other survivors include: one daughter, Cheryl Esser Bailey, Fairfield, Iowa; one son, Michael J. Esser, Chesterfield; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Boonville. The Rev. Patrick Dolan will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in St. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. today at Thacher Funeral Home in Boonville, with a prayer vigil at 8 p.m.
Memorial are suggested to the St. Peter and Paul Catholic School Fund.
HUTCHINSON
Carl Hutchinson, 75, Rushville, formerly of Camdenton, died Nov. 5, 2000, at Major Hospital, Shelbyville.
He was born March 13, 1925, in Shelby County, a son of Lowell and LaVaughn Myer Hutchinson. He was married June 5, 1949, to Myrtle Cardot, who survives.
He was retired from Hutchinson and Son Inc. Grain Elevator in Arlington, Ind. He was caretaker of Arlington East Hill Cemetery from 1977 to 1988. He was a charter member of the Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department; a charter member of the former Arlington Lions Club, where he served as tailtwister for 17 years; and a member of First Church of God, Rushville.
Other survivors include: two sons, Lloyd Hutchinson, Hinton, W.Va., and Lance Hutchinson, Arlington; one sister, Mary Louise Hutchinson, Cape Coral, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Todd Funeral Home, Rushville. The Rev. Charles Justice and the Rev. Gary Isaacs will officiate. Burial will be in Arlington East Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday.
REHAGEN
Norbert A. Rehagen, 73, St. Elizabeth, died Nov. 7, 2000, at St. Elizabeth Care Center.
He was born Feb. 19, 1927, in Rich Fountain, a son of John and Mathilda Mary Lindenbusch Rehagen. He was married Sept. 27, 1952, in St. Elizabeth, to Catherine Brenneke, who survives at the home.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He worked at Capital City Ford for 20 years, retiring in 1989.
He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, St. Elizabeth, and the Holy Name Society. He was the first Grand Knight of St. Elizabeth Knights of Columbus Council 6640 and served as financial secretary. He was a member of St. Jude's Council 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and Honor Guard.
He was a member of St. Elizabeth American Legion Post 545, Capital City Squares Dance Club and the St. Elizabeth Community Center Board, where he was bowling machine mechanic. He was financial secretary of the St. Elizabeth Fire Protection District and a volunteer leathercrafts project leader of the St. Elizabeth 4-H Club.
He was a past member of the St. Elizabeth Town Board, the St. Elizabeth R-4 School Board and the Comm-Unity Ambulance Board in Meta.
Other survivors include: one son, Larry Rehagen, Livonia, Mich.; four daughters, Karen Craig, Tempe, Ariz., Diane Lang, Peculiar, Darlene Wansing, St. Elizabeth, and Elaine Forck, Taos; four brothers, Leonard Rehagen, St. Louis, and James Rehagen, David Rehagen and Arnold Rehagen, all of Jefferson City; two sisters, Alverna Buechter, Jefferson City, and Berniece Schulte, St. Anthony; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. The Rev. John Degnan will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3:30-8 p.m. Thursday at the St. Elizabeth Community Center, with a senior citizens rosary at 4 p.m., and a rosary at 7:30 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Elizabeth Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund or the Drew Wansing Fund.
Arrangements are under the direction of Rekus Funeral Home, St. Elizabeth.
SCHAEFER
Johanna A. Schaefer, 94, Jefferson City, died Nov. 6, 2000, at Green Meadows Health Care Center, Linn.
Arrangements are at Houser-Millard Funeral Home.
JEFFERY
Bruce "Bert" Jeffery, 90, Jefferson City, died Nov. 7, 2000, at his home.
He was born July 30, 1910, in Mokane, a son of John R. and Millie A. Humphry Jeffery. He was married in 1943, in Griffin, Ga., to Kathryn Sheppard, who survives at the home.
A lifelong resident of the Jefferson City area, he attended school in Mokane and Jefferson City. He was an Army veteran of World War II, receiving four Bronze Stars.
He was employed as a conductor with the Missouri Pacific Railroad for 30 years until his retirement in 1975. He was a member of the United Transportation Union, Local 933, and a past member of the VFW, Roy Sone Post 1003.
Other survivors include one son, Donald B. Jeffery, Hartsburg, four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
One son, Bruce Jeffery, died April 6, 1962.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Freeman Mortuary. The Rev. George Scantlan will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday.
Memorials are suggested to the Missouri River Hospice.
TAYLOR
Andrew Jackson "Pete" Taylor, 54, Mokane, died Nov. 7, 2000, at his home.
He was born April 11, 1946, a son of Richard and Orlue Smart Taylor. His mother survives. He was married May 17, 1964, in Mokane, to Connie Holzhauser, who survives at the home.
A 1964 graduate of South Callaway R-2 High School, he retired from the Laborers Union 662. He also owned and operated Taylor Service Center, Mokane. He was a member of Mokane Christian Church and Blue Creek Mountaineers.
Other survivors include: one son, Richard Taylor, state of Wisconsin; one sister, Patsy Ray Rogers, Mokane; two brothers, Gary Taylor and Donald Taylor, both of Mokane; four grandchildren and two step grandchildren.
One son, John Franklin Taylor, preceded him in death.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Maupin Funeral Home, Fulton. Burial will be in Mokane Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday.
Memorials are suggested to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Portland.
DESCHER
Walter Descher, 79, Jefferson City, died Nov. 7, 2000, at St. Marys Health Center.
Arrangements are at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home.
JOHNSON
Francis Lee Johnson, 85, Sedalia, died Nov. 6, 2000, near Sedalia, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Arrangements are at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Versailles.
FLEENER
Jay W. Fleener, 81, Independence, formerly of Gravois Mills, died Nov. 7, 2000, at the Medical Center of Independence.
He was born May 19, 1919, in Merwin, a son of Jay W. and Rachel J. Lane Fleener. He was married June 9, 1944, in Kansas City, Kan., to Nina L. Duzan, who died Sept. 23, 1993.
He was a graduate of Blue Springs High School and Kansas City College of Commerce. He attended the University of Missouri before earning his pilot's license.
He was an Army Air Corps veteran. He was a flight instructor and an advanced trainer. He worked at Lake City Arsenol as a tool and gage inspector.
He moved to Gravois Mills in 1956 and operated the Twin Bays Resort for 22 years. He worked at Station Casino. He was a reserve deputy for 21 years and a dispatcher for four years with the Morgan County Sheriff's Department.
He co-founded the Gravois Mills Fire Protection District. He was chosen Citizen of the Year by the First Responders. He was a past president of the Gravois Arm Association; a member of the Masonic Lodge, Blue Springs and Versailles; the Ararat Shrine Temple, Kansas City; the American Legion, Blue Springs and Versailles; and Gravois Mills United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: one son, Jay W. "Scotty" Fleener III, Lee's Summit; one daughter, Jacquelyn "Jackie" E. Shafer, Sunrise Beach; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Laurie. The Rev. Sidney Robbins will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in Ozark Chapel Cemetery, Laurie.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today.
Memorials are suggested to Gravois Mills United Methodist Church.
DALTON
Michael H. Dalton Jr., 80, St. Louis, died Nov. 9, 2000, at his home.
He was born May 7, 1920, a son of Dr. Michael H. and Eva Lamburth Dalton. He was married Sept. 3, 1949, to Gloria Frances Meyer, who survives.
He received his master's degree in social work from St. Louis University. He was the director of the Family Services Agency of Southern Illinois and director of Catholic Social Services of the Belleville, Ill., Diocese.
He founded and directed Operation Family, a civil rights organization based in St. Louis and Metro-East Illinois, and was honored by President Lyndon Johnson.
He was an organist and choir director for more than 40 years. He served at St. Mary's, Bridgeton; St. James, St. Louis; and St. John Bosco, St. Louis County. He was ordained a deacon of the Catholic Church Feb. 1, 1986. He was assigned to serve as a deacon at St. Monica's Parish. He was appointed as deacon to Blessed Sacrament Parish in May 1999.
He was honored in September by Gitania Productions at Powell Symphony Hall for more than 50 years of work with the minority community in St. Louis and the Metro-East area of Illinois.
Other survivors include: four sons, Michael H. Dalton III, Ashland, and Christopher E. Dalton, Edward C. Dalton and Joseph F.X. Dalton, all of St. Louis; four daughters, Mary F. Reichman, Pocatello, Idaho, Mazie F. Dalton and Theresa J. Mines, both of St. Louis, and Ann L. McLellan, Memphis, Tenn.; 23 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
His stepfather, John Ursbrook, preceded him in death.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Monica's Parish, Creve Coeur. Burial will be in St. Monica's Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. Sunday at Ortmann-Stipanovich Funeral Home, Creve Coeur, and from 6:30-9 p.m. Sunday at St. Monica's with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
