Jeannette Weinberg

Jeannette “Jay” Andrews Weinberg, 87, of McComb, died unexpectedly, but peacefully in her sleep, Oct. 29, 2009, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.

Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb, then 9 a.m. Monday at J.J. White Memorial Presbyterian Church in McComb until services there at 10 a.m. The Rev. Elizabeth Gabbard will officiate, and burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery.

Mrs. Weinberg was the last surviving child of J. Harley and Bess Andrews of Champaign, Ill.

She accompanied her late husband, Frank D. Weinberg, as he set up his optometry practice in McComb in 1946. Not one to be a mere wallflower, Jay was active in numerous social and civic endeavors. Over the years, she participated in Beta Sigma Phi, Junior Auxiliary, bridge clubs and some dance clubs.
She and Frank were active members of Fernwood Country Club for many years — she at the pool and on the dance floor, and he on the golf course and the gin rummy table.

She was the “unofficial” photographer for hundreds of gatherings. She never lost sight of what was important in her life.

A devoted wife and mother, she spent many of the early years in McComb as an active congregate of J.J. White Memorial Presbyterian Church, serving in various capacities with the women of the church and circle groups locally and statewide. She particularly enjoyed several church-sponsored outings in Montreat, N.C. After her son was grown, her attendance dwindled for a while, but over the last few years she found renewed interest (not faith, for her faith never waned) in the church and went there at every opportunity, including Wednesday prayer meeting and Sunday vespers when she was able.

Remarkably, she made many new friends even though she was in her eighties. She spoke often of the wonderfully inspirational relationships she had developed at J.J. White, and her family is grateful for the kindness shown to her.
Mrs. Weinberg’s family said she was a woman of incredible charm, wit and intelligence and will be long-remembered and sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. But the family takes consolation in knowing that she is even closer to God and reunited with Frank in Heaven.

Her family also extends its sincere appreciation to neighbors and friends who have been so attentive to Jay as she gallantly faced numerous physical ailments and other dilemmas over recent years. You are too numerous to mention (for fear of omitting someone who belongs), but you know who you are.

Besides her parents and husband of more than 50 years, she was preceded in death by her sister, Avonna Andrews Hoyne; and her brother, John H. Andrews.

Survivors include her son, Philip S. Weinberg of Meridan and Jackson; her grandsons, Scott Weinberg of Gulfport, Craig Weinberg and his wife Melissa of Saucier and Chris Weinberg and wife Christa of White, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Kayla Weinberg and Hadlee Anne Weinberg of Saucier and Tucker Weinberg and Dustin Weinberg of White; nephews and their spouses, Andy and Janet Hoyne of St. Louis, Ron and Pam Hoyne of Champaign, Ill., Barry Hoyne of Seattle; a niece, Cindy Van Pelt and husband, Curtis of Madison, Wis.; and numerous great-nieces and nephews, all of whom she truly adored.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to J.J. White Memorial Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 774, McComb, MS 39649.To share sympathies, condolences and memories, go to Hartman-Sharkeyfuneralhome.com.

Mrs. Leggett was born Aug. 19, 1929, in Bogue Chitto, to Benny and Lula Wallace McCaffery.

Mrs. Leggett was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Barney Leggett; one grandson, Shane Case; four brothers, R.E., Russell, Homer and Jewell McCaffery; and one sister, Mary White.

Survivors include two sons, Jimmy and Johnny Leggett, both of Bogue Chitto; one daughter, Brenda Case of Bogue Chitto; two brothers, Houston “Skeet” McCaffery of Bogue Chitto and Robert “Snow” McCaffery of Wesson; one sister, Geraldine McCaffery of Bogue Chitto; four grandsons and six great-grandchildren.
