Mary Wester McCord
BREMERTON, Wash. - Mary Wester McCord, 83, of Bremerton, formerly of Billings and Gardiner, Mont., died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at her home with her two daughters at her bedside. Cause of death was cancer.
Rose (Kerner) and Jacob Will gave birth to Mary on May 24, 1916, at their homestead in Mildred. She was one of eight children.
She graduated from Forsyth High School. She married Leo Wester on June 26, 1936, in Fort Peck. Together they lived in several Montana communities including Forsyth, Billings, and Livingston. They had three children before Leo drowned in a boating accident in 1950.
Mary later married Forrest Huff who died in 1963. She married Francis McCord of Billings in 1966. When Francis died, Mary lived in Gardiner until 1995 when she moved to Bremerton to live with her daughters.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Leith Morrow; and brothers, John and Jim Wills; and her three husbands.
She is survived by her brother, Ruben of Elkhorn, Wis.; sisters, Goldie (Glenn) Griggs of San Jose, Calif.; Irene O'Hara and Helen Sorensen, both of Billings; daughters, Persis "Perk" (John) Morris and Marilyn (Lee) Winterowd of Bremerton; Milton "Zack" (Gloria) Wester of Laurel; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and several stepchildren.
The family will perform a graveside service in Livingston on Friday, Nov. 26, at 11 a.m. at Mountainview cemetery. A memorial service will be Saturday, Nov. 27, 11 a.m. at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, 715 E. 5th St., Laurel. Memorials may be made to Tracyton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 127, Tracyton, WA 98393.

Dorothy C. Peteler
Dorothy, dear sweet Dorothy departed her earthly abode to be with her Creator and loved ones on Nov. 19, 1999. For the past 14 years she had been a resident of St. John's Lutheran Home, and at the time of her death was 104 years old.
She was born at Berkeley, Calif., Sept. 26, 1895, a daughter of Warren and Elizabeth Clarke and was christened Dorothy Ward Clarke. She was married to Charles Robert Peteler in Berkeley on Jan. 23, 1921, and he preceded her in death in 1969.
She is survived by one sister, Catherine Doody, residing in West Lafayette, Ind. A sister and brother have passed on before her.
Dorothy Clarke Peteler is truly a "turn of the century lady." She went to Miss Randolph's Finishing School in Berkeley where she was reared. Along with this schooling she was educated to entertain properly. She learned to arrange flowers beautifully, to decorate and furnish her home attractively. Dorothy Peteler was taught how important it is to remember names in social situations; she did this and always made guests feel welcome and comfortable.
Mrs. Peteler's education continued always through reading current best sellers as well as the classics. She was an active member of AAUW. Dorothy learned elocution and spoke and read out loud beautifully.
When Dorothy and her husband Charles were in Egypt for two years, because of her social skills, Dorothy was often asked to be a hostess at American Embassy gatherings. While Mr. Peteler was educating the Egyptians in practical agricultural practices, Mrs. Peteler was responsibly serving her country in being a gracious American lady in every way.
Dorothy's father, Warren Thompson Clarke, was an entomologist at the University of California in Berkeley. He was able to find ways to fight bugs which were eating crops. Dorothy said her mother would say, "it saved the farmers millions of dollars, but we never saw any of it." Mr. Clarke also did the research which enabled us to have grapes without seeds.
"God so loved the World" that he gave us Dorothy for a period of time to share his love with her own. We, her friends, while we mourn her passing, shall cherish her memory as we often recall the love she gave to us and the great joy she brought into our lives. How does one begin to record 104 years of proper, happy living in a few words? You don't, you just appreciate what you know of her.
Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens on Central Avenue.
Good Bye, Sweet Dorothy.
