LEXINGTON -- Colleen Bowers Hill, 72, of Lexington, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Good Hope United Methodist Church.
The visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel.

JACKSON

Dr. Felix William Jackson entered this world in Woodville, Miss., on Sept. 6 as the son of Henry Jasper and Bessie Washington Jackson. He departed his early life Dec. 7, 2000, surrounded by his wife and her nephew. He received his preparatory education in the Chicago public schools. After graduating from high school, he graduated from Wilson Junior College, Roosevelt College (specializing in pre-medicine) and Illinois College of Optometry. He relocated to Winston-Salem and became the first black optometrist in the state of North Carolina. He was a member of Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church in Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Jasper and Bessie Washington Jackson, and a brother, Henry Jasper Jackson Jr. Dr. Jackson is survived by his devoted wife, Elizabeth Carson Jackson; an aunt, Mrs. Marie Washington and her children, Ursula Dotson, Lettice Gipson and Henry Washington Jr., all of Chicago; a brother, Julius Jones of Chicago; devoted friends, Dr. Marcel Brooks of Mechanicsville, Md., Dr. Ricky Road of Biloxi, Miss., Dr. Buford Kidd of Greensboro and Dr. Willard McCloud of Winston-Salem; and his caregivers, Ronnie Moore, Calvin Hill, Eric Stephens and Ronnie Beverly. He received numerous awards and recognitions including: picture and recognition in Ebony magazine for helping to organize a hero's welcome and parade for Lawrence Joel upon his return to Winston-Salem after being awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, Humanitarian Award (NAACP), Outstanding Service Award (Experiment in Self Reliance), invitation to John F. Kennedy's inauguration, Who's Who in North Carolina, Outstanding Service Award (CHOICE) and a resolution by Mayor and Board of Alderman for his contributions to the city of Winston-Salem and practicing optometry for over 46 years in Winston-Salem. His outstanding civil rights accomplishments include: desegregating drinking facilities in all stores, desegregating lounges and restrooms in all stores and public facilities, desegregating all theaters, restaurants and hotels before the civil rights law was passed and integrating the clerks at retail stores. He was responsible for the first Negro secretary at Southern Bell Telephone Co. in the southern region, and helped implement the third Sit-Down Demonstration in the nation. He issued an invitation that was accepted by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to speak in Winston-Salem in April 1964, and was a member of team to recruit athletes to Wake Forest University. He belonged to many organizations in the past and present including: Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, North Carolina Optometry Society, American Optometry Society, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Young Men's Christian Association, National Advancement Association, Mayor's Goodwill Committee, Experiment in Self Reliance, Model Cities Planning Committee, Mayor's Police Community Relationship Committee, NAACP Executive Board, Commissioner for Redevelopment Commission and Southern Region Council. He exercised his love for golf by sponsoring underprivileged youth at Winston Lake Golf Course and helping to organize the First Black Professional Amateur Golf Tournament. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at the Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church with Dr. James M. Sloan officiating. Interment will be in the Forest Hills Memorial Park, Lexington. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at the Russell Funeral Home. (RUSSELL)

MATHIS
NORTH WILKESBORO -- Mrs. Mildred Hope Holman Mathis, 77, of Mathis Farm Road, Roaring River, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at Villages of Wilkes. Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with the Rev. Rick Jackson and the Rev. Vaughn Brown officiating. Burial will be in Scenic Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Mathis was born March 9, 1923, in Wilkes County to John H. and Esther Fletcher Holman. She was a member of Cranberry Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir and a Sunday School teacher. Mrs. Mathis was a member of the Cranberry Home Demonstration Club. She is survived by her husband, Archie Mathis, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Don and Loutricia Mathis Redding of Roaring River, and Hershel and Diane Mathis Brown of Hendersonville, Tenn.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Pam Mathis and John and Lisa Mathis, all of Roaring River; a sister, Gladys Holman York of North Wilkesboro; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild. The family will be at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Cranberry Baptist Church cemetery Fund, c/o Rebecca Johnson 9472 E. US Hwy 421, Roaring River, N.C. 28669.

PARDUE
HIGH POINT -- Robert "Red" Glen Pardue, 72, resident of 701 Maryland Place, died Friday afternoon, Dec. 8, 2000, in the High Point Regional Hospital. Mr. Pardue was born May 28, 1928, in Yadkin County, a son of Thomas Caswell and Lula Mae Jones Pardue. He had been a resident of High Point for several years and was a retired truck driver. Mr. Pardue was a member of Faith Baptist Church. On March 28, 1959 he was married to the former Geneva Black who survives of the home. Also surviving are three daughters, Melody Barnes and husband Rickey of Lexington, Denise Welborn and husband Kenny of High Point, Loretta Fredere and husband Jaimie of the home; a son, Steven G. Pardue of High Point; a step-son, Robert Poindexter of Yadkinville; a sister, Maude Mock of Winston-Salem; a brother, J.T. Pardue of Yadkinville; four grandchildren, Rickey Barnes, Benjamin Barnes, Ashley Fredere and Jeremiah Fredere. Graveside service and interment will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Richmond Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Yadkinville by the Reverend Steve Welborn. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale.

POTTS
LEXINGTON -- Andrew "Andy" Potts, 81, of North Leonard Road, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at St. Josephs Hospital in Savannah, Ga. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday, December 11, at Center United Methodist Church where he was a member. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Larry Jent. The burial will be at Center United Methodist Church cemetery. Mr. Potts was born in Pocomoke City, Md. He was the son of Charles and Emma Henderson Potts. He was retired from the Norfolk-Southern and Winston Salem Southbound Railroad and was a member of the Welcome Civitan, the Red Cross, the Amvets and the VFW. He served in World War II and in Korea in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded by his first wife, Catherine Smith Potts. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Doss Potts, of the home, a daughter, Andrea Potts Davis, and husband, Dr. Ray Davis of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, Andrew David Potts and wife, Beth, of Dunwoody, Ga., and Phillip Smith Potts and wife, Nancy, of Wilmington; four grandchildren, Laura Potts of San Francisco, Calif., Derick Potts of Charlotte, Nathan Thompson and Caroline Thompson both of Atlanta, Ga.; and a great-grandson, Andrew Potts, of Charlotte. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday night, Dec. 10, at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel and other times at the residence.

REECE
Mrs. Georgia Jeanne Pearson Reece, 68, of Winston-Salem died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born April 20, 1932, in Wilkes County to Claude and Chessie Mae Whittington Pearson. Mrs. Reece was retired from K&W Cafeteria and was a member of Berean Baptist Church and Mount Carmel United Methodist Church. She enjoyed going to church and serving. She was a friendly and loving person and will be missed by many. Surviving are two daughters, Carla Coburn and husband Richard of Rexburg, Idaho, and JoNell Stoddard and husband James of Spanish Fork, Utah; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Claudia White of Statesville, Mrs. Roberta Hines of Kernersville and Mrs. Estelle Rickert and husband Jim of Iredell County, and a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Berean Baptist Church by Dr. Ron Baity. Burial will follow at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to Berean Baptist Church, N.C. Highway 109, Winston-Salem, NC.

SHEPHERD
Mrs. Louise Church Shepherd, 90, passed away Dec. 8, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She had been in declining health for three years and seriously ill for three months. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Christ Moravian Church by Dr. Samuel Marx and Randall Vogler. Interment will follow in God's Acre. Mrs. Shepherd was born in Winston-Salem Nov. 24, 1910, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hillary Church and was the last surviving member of the "Old Lamp Lighter of Old Salem" (her father). She was retired from AT&T after 21 years of service and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Mrs. Shepherd was a lifelong member of Christ Moravian Church, where she served faithfully until her health failed. Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Thomas Lee Shepherd; a daughter, Sandra S. Davis, of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Christopher Todd Davis and wife, Regina; and a great-grandson, Christopher Jordan Davis, of Glen Alpine. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Voglers Main Street Chapel. They request any memorials be made to Christ Moravian Church Organ Fund or to the American Heart Association.

SNOW
KERNERSVILLE_ Miss Wylma Inez Snow, 78, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at the Bradford Village East. Miss Snow was born in Forsyth County, a daughter of the late Elijah E. and Sarah Stack Snow, and was a member of the Kernersville First Baptist Church. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Edna S. Tilley of Kernersville and Mrs. Vida S. Crutchfield of Harmony; a brother, Aaron Snow of Kernersville. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Shady Grove Wesleyan Church cemetery by the Rev. Sam Murphy. Memorials may be directed to the Kernersville First Baptist Church, 401 Oakhurst St., Kernersville, N.C. 27284 or to the Shepherd's Center, 431 Bodenhammer St., Kernersville, N.C. 27284. Hayworth Miller Cain Funeral Home is assisting the Snow family.

TRUSLOW
REIDSVILLE -- Caroline Gray Truslow, 80, of 1706 Pennrose Drive died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Annie Penn Hospital. Memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at First Presbyterian Church. Graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Salem cemetery in Winston-Salem. Wilkerson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

TUTTLE
The Rev. Buddy Ray Tuttle, 68, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at his residence. He was born Dec. 5, 1932, in Alamance County to Adger and Daisy Ross Tuttle. The Rev. Tuttle was pastor and founder of Fairview Baptist Tabernacle, serving there for 20 years. He was also founder and director of Camp Joel, serving there for 40 years, and was a former pastor of Hillcrest Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bynum Tuttle, and his mother and father. Surviving are his wife, Pat Tuttle of the home; a son, Joel Tuttle of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Judith Tuttle of Apex; two brothers, A.G. Tuttle Jr. of Graham and Elwood Tuttle of Burlington; and a grandson, Andrew Gerard of Apex. Funeral services will be at 8 p.m. Monday at Woodland Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tim Gammons, the Rev. Zeno Groce and the Rev. Tommy Willis officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday prior to the service. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

WOOD
Mrs. Carol Huddleston Wood, 64, of 908 Ashley Glen Dr., died early Saturday morning at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in St. Louis, Mo., on March 2, 1936, to James and Clara Kulage Huddleston. Mrs. Wood moved to Winston-Salem in 1990. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Chapel. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and sister and her life focused on her family and a large circle of friends. Preceding her in death were her parents. Surviving are her husband, Russell A. Wood of the home; four sons, Robert Wood and wife, Ellen, Thomas Wood and wife, Kim, and Michael Wood, all of Charlotte, Russell Wood III and wife, Traci, of Alphretta, Ga.; a daughter, Melissa Wood, of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren; a sister, Patricia Lewis, and husband, Russell, of St. Louis and two nephews and a niece. A memorial funeral mass will be said at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Chapel on Cherry Street at 2 p.m. Monday conducted by Father George Sullivan. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103. Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the Wood family.

DUGSPUR, Va. -- Edgar C. Worrell, 91, of Dugspur, Va., passed away Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax, Va. He is survived by his wife, Opal Gardner Worrell, of the home; a daughter, Iris Ann Worrell, of Dugspur, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Edgar Eldridge and Helen Worrell of Mt. Airy, N.C.; two sisters, Helen Worrell and Irene Padgett of Woodlawn, Va.; seven grandchildren and spouses, Darren and Tammy Worrell of Flord, Va., Preston Worrell of Dugspur, Va., Ronald and Angela Worrell of Galax, Va., Donald Worrell of Dugspur, Va., Greg and Carrie Worrell of Dugspur, Va., Tabitha Worrell of Blue Ridge, Va., and Cecelia Worrell of Hillsville, Va; four step-grandchildren and spouses, Tammy and Andy Bowman, Tonya Smith, Joey Smith, Shannon Smith, all of Mt. Airy, N.C.; six great-grandchildren, Jordan Worrell, Austin Worrell, Haley Worrell, Cole Worrell, Kaley Nester and Bryant Worrell; four step-great-grandchildren, Dalton Smith, Jessica Smith, Christian Smith and Kasey Bowman. Mr. Worrell was preceded in death by his parents, James Emmit and Daisy Cox Worrell; two sons, Elvin Worrell and Gerald Worrell. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville, Va. The Rev. Elmon Thompson is officiating. ANDERSON
KING -- Mr. Joseph Wayne Anderson, Sr., 69, of 157 Saura View Drive, died Friday, December 10, 1999 at his home. Mr. Anderson was born in Atlanta, Ga. on January 2, 1930, to Roy Marion and Ruby Evelyn Key Anderson. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he had lived in Forsyth County most of his adult life. He retired from Sara Lee Hosiery in February, 1992, and moved to his current home in Stokes County. Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife, Frances Hinkle Anderson of the home; his five children, Joseph Wayne Anderson, Jr. of Pfafftown, (Brent) and Cynthia Wagoner of King, David and (Ann) Anderson of Walkertown, Richard and (Tammy) Anderson of Walnut Cove, and (Bill) and Michelle Thompson of Charlotte; ten grandchildren; and one sister, Ann and (Charles) Folds of Mocksville. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Vogler's Reynolda Chapel by Pastor Ralph Sproles with burial to follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stokes County, P.O. Box 10, Danbury, N.C. 27106.

CARLYLE
YADKINVILLE -- Mrs. Margaret Mae Carlyle, 86, of 2308 Harvel School Rd., Yadkinville, N.C., died December 10, 1999 at Hoots Memorial Hospital. She was born July 22, 1913 to the late John and Lenora Hamilton Young. Mrs. Carlyle was employed at Mae's Cafe in Laurinburg and of the Pentecostal faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin H. Carlyle on July 22, 1974. Surviving are three daughters, Maggie (Bill) Lewis, Jodie (Larry "Pete") Pavlis, and Bobbie Gray all of Yadkinville; one sister, Hazel Sessoms of Wilmington; one brother, Albert Young of Goldsboro, N.C.; five grandchildren, Michael Souza, Steven Souza, Mitchell Gray, Paul Gray, and Kelly McPhail; and three great-grandchildren, Mark Souza, Eric Souza, and Brad Gray. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 12, 1999 at Gentry Family Chapel officiated by Rev. Bruce Lundy. Burial will be in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7-9 p.m. at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Hwy. 601 N. Yadkinville.

JOHNSON
DURHAM -- Ernest L. Johnson, 84, died Thursday night in Durham Regional Hospital. He was reared in Wilkes County and had lived in Durham, Jacksonville, High Point and Cedar Grove. Surviving are his wife, Mary Josephine Moore Johnson; two sons, Rev. Ernest L. Johnson, Jr. and wife, Linda of Carthage and John William Johnson and wife, Delinda of Durham; two daughter, Ruth Elizabeth Cates and husband, Ralph of Kernersville and Ollie Josephine Turner and husband, Dexter of Durham; three brothers, Noah Johnson and Wayne Johnson both of High Point, and Eugene Johnson of Wilmington; two sisters, Liea Strange of Jamestown and Evelyn Henderson of Taylorsville; a half-brother, Ray Johnson; a half-sister, Barbara Sparks; ten grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. in Duke's Chapel United Methodist Church in Durham. Officiating are the Rev. Ben Wilson, Rev. M.B. Collier, and Dr. Thomas C. Elliott. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Arrangements by Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home, Durham, N.C.

JOHNSON
Mr. Herman C. Johnson, 76, of Winston-Salem, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, December 10, 1999 at his home. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was born June 30, 1923 in Forsyth County to William C. and Carrie Fishel Johnson. Mr. Johnson was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 1983 after 37 years of service. He was a member of South Fork Baptist Church where he served as long as his health permitted. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and he was a member of Forsyth Genealogical Association. He was preceded in death by a sister, Hilda Johnson. Surviving is his wife of 50 years, Mrs. Inez Whitley Johnson of the home; two sons, Sammy Johnson and wife, Vici of Greenville, N.C. and Ricky Johnson of Emmaus, Pa.; two daughters, Donna Ellis and husband, Dennis of Germanton and Ann Webster and husband, Paul of Winston-Salem; one foster daughter, Sharon Dellinger of Cayman Islands; one sister, Harriet Hawkins and husband, Bob of Rolling Meadows, Ill.; two grandchildren; three foster grandchildren; and seven step-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, December 12, 1999 at South Fork Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Pope and Rev. Jerry Laughter officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Mr. Johnson will lie instate at the church from 2:00-2:30 p.m. Sunday prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
