SOUTHERN

WALNUT COVE - Mrs. Edna Phillips "Granny" Southern, 85, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at Stokes Reynolds Hospital. She was born in Chatham County to the late Dr. Arnold and Dora Phillips Phillips. She was a member of Willow Oak Baptist Church and played the piano for several area churches. She drove a van several years for YVEDDI and enjoyed working with the senior citizens in Stokes County. Granny loved people, never met a stranger and especially doted on her grandchildren. Surviving are three daughters, Gaye Hilton (Richard) of Murrell's Inlet, S.C., Becky Murphy (Larry) of Reidsville and Pamela Mock (Roger) of Hampstead; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and a very special friend, MeMaw Morris. A 3 p.m. funeral service will be held Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Ralph Mitchell and the Rev. Richard Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Willow Oak Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at the funeral home.

SPENCER

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Preston Wyatt Spencer, 84, of 115 Green St. died Thursday morning, Feb. 15, 2001, at N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. Mr. Spencer was born Oct. 2, 1916, in Surry County to the late Isom and Filena Hawks Spencer and was of the Primitive Baptist faith. He was a veteran of U.S. Army, having served in North Africa and Rome, Italy, with the 34th Division during World War II and was a retired automobile body repairman. Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Dudley of Roanoke, Va.; five sons and a daughter-in-law, Mickey Spencer of Stonington, Conn., Gary Isom Spencer of Berkeley, Calif., Dallas and Carol Spencer of Pilot Mountain, Sammie Arrington Spencer of Mount Airy and Frankie Curtis Spencer of Roanoke; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Flower Gap Primitive Baptist Church cemetery conducted by the Rev. Rickey Spencer. military honors will be conducted at the graveside by VFW #2019, Mount Airy, and Post #9436, Pilot Mountain. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home and the family will assemble at the cemetery Friday just prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of Surry County, 1326 N. Main St., Mount Airy, NC 27030.

STIERS

LEXINGTON - Eran Aurbrey Stiers, 17, of Giles Road died Wednesday from injuries received in an automobile accident. A graveside service will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Lexington City cemetery conducted by the Rev. B. Joe Baker. Mr. Stiers was born Sept. 27, 1983, in Springfield, Ill. to Ronnie Lewis Hutchinson and Maria Lynn Denig Stiers. Eran was a student at West Davidson High School, where he was a member of the soccer team and enjoyed skateboarding and music. Surviving are his father, Ronnie Lewis Hutchinson of Lexington; his mother and stepfather, Maria Lynn Denig Williams and James Scott Williams of Winston-Salem; brothers Anthony Stiers of Lexington and Ryan Hutchinson of Advance; sisters Stephanie Stiers and Morgan Hutchinson of Lexington; several aunts and uncles; grandmother Florence Frohlich of Muskeegan, Mich.; stepgrandparents Carol and Earl Williams of Winston-Salem and James Howard and Debbie Elmore of Wichita, Kan.; and great-grandmothers Ethel Williams of Winston-Salem and Leona Elmore of Houston, Mo. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home on Giles Road. Memorials may be directed to Forsyth Humane Society, P.O. WOODCOCK

Mr. Alvis Boyce Woodcock, 79, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Atkinson on May 16, 1921, to Willie P. and Laura Horrell Woodcock. He was retired from Superior Oil Co. and was a member of Westside Church of Christ. Mr. Woodcock was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Ruth Lynch Woodcock, and a daughter, Shirley Flynt. Surviving are a son David Woodcock and wife Cindy and their son Bart; grandson Frank Wright and wife Beth and their sons Brad and Zach; granddaughter April O'Mara and husband Mark and their son Tyler and Cody; granddaughter Jane Dinkins and husband Wayne and their son Danny; a son-in-law, George Flyntt; and a brother, Layton Woodcock. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel by Minister Kent Allen. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

BARBER

Mrs. Kathryn Hilker "Grandma" Barber, 75, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at her home. She was born May 11, 1925, in Winston-Salem to Arthur Henry Hilker and Katie Leigh Hilker. She was a member of Home Moravian Church where she had taught Sunday school and was a member of the adult Bible class. Kathryn graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School where she was a member of the baseball team. She was a secretary for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system for 23 years, was a den mother for Boy Scout Troop 22 and was a member of the Winston-Salem Shrine Club, Nobells. Kathryn was a devoted wife, homemaker and mother. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Earl Eugene Barber of the home; a brother, Robert Richard Hilker and his wife Juanita of Cornelius; a son, Gene Barber, his wife Dianne and their daughter Jenny of Gastonia; a son, Art Barber, his wife Susan and their daughter Jamie and son, Brandon of Boone; a son, Bert Barber, his wife Terry, their son Drew and their daughter Stacey of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Arthur Henry Hilker Jr. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, at Home Moravian Church in Old Salem by Dr. Gerald Harris and the Rev. C. Scott Venable. Interment will follow in the Salem cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Book of Remembrance of Home Moravian Church, 529 S. Church St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101 or Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel is serving the family.

BARNHARDT

Mrs. Mary Leigh Kester Barnhardt, 65, of Graceland Living Center in King died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Barnhardt was born Jan. 20, 1936, to Lindsay Bryan and Margaret Hartsell Kester. A graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School, she attended Greensboro Woman's College and graduated from the University of Miami. Mrs. Barnhardt was a social worker for Forsyth County and did volunteer work for the Girl Scouts of America. She was a former circle leader at Centenary United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Mrs. Barnhardt is survived by a daughter, Mary Margaret Barnhardt and husband Rick J. Lasker of Richmond, Va.; a son, Max Lloyd Barnhardt III and wife Gina of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Maggie and Cameron; and a sister, Miss Margaret Anne Kester. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the home of Max Barnhardt, 2852 Fairmont Road. Memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 658, Winston-Salem, NC 27102.

BAYARD

Dr. Walter L. Bayard of Bermuda Run died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001 after an extended illness. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and physician. Dr. Bayard was born Feb. 14, 1923 to Walter Darrow and Myrtle Baker Bayard of Chicago. He was a graduate of the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois School of Medicine. He completed his training in ophthalmology at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary, where he also served as a clinical professor. His long medical career spanned a period of 36 years. He was in private pracitce in Park Ridge, Ill.; Tryon, N.C.; and Phoenix, Ariz, retiring in 1988. Dr. Bayard was a diplomat of The American College of Surgeons and a member of the The American Academy of Ophthalmology, The American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Medical Association. He served in the Army Medical Corps for four years, reaching the rank of captain. Dr. Bayard was also a member of the vestry of the The Church of the Holy Cross in Tryon. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Baker Bayard. Surviving are his wife of almost 50 years, Donna L. Bayard; four sons, W. John Bayard, MD, and his wife, Ruth, of Columbia, S.C.; Peter Bayard and his wife, Sine, of Copenhagen, Denmark; Jeffrey Bayard and his wife, Lisa, of Richmond, Va.; and Andrew Bayard and his wife, Lori, of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Mitzi Bayard Campanelli and her husband, Tom, of Guam; and grandchildren Amanda, Lindsey, Bailey Anne, Blake, Katherine, Andrew, Zachary and Noah. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Michael J. Fox Parkinson's Research Project. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. We love you Poppy! BLAYLOCK

Mrs. Myra Lewis Blaylock, a resident of Salemtowne Retirement Community died Saturday, Feb. 3. Mrs. Blaylock was born Nov. 21, 1903 to Joel P. and Ada Lewis Blaylock of Stokes County. She was the oldest member of Marvin United Methodist Church, was treasurer of Friendly Bible Class for several years and received the Life Membership Pin of United Methodist Women. She was a 50-year member of Extension Homemakers and was an avid gardener. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Charlie Ray Blaylock, and two sons, Charles Lindy and William (Bill) Blaylock. Surviving are a daughter, Thelma B. Girard and her husband, Robert W., of Advance; a son, Grover W. Blaylock, and his wife, Loretta, of High Point; five granchildren, Barbara Blaylock of Rockville, Md.; Shirley Downing of Winston-Salem; Lyndon Blaylock of St. Louis, Mo.; Connie Davis and April Farlow of High Point; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Virginia Smith of Walnut Cove; a brother, John Lewis of Winston-Salem; and a devoted friend, Carol Seeber of Advance. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m. at Marvin United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. BULLIN

WALNUT COVE - Mr. Emory J. (Red) Bullin, 91, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at his home on Miller Road. Mr. Bullin was born Oct. 8, 1909, in Stokes County, the son of Snyder Bullin and Cora Mabe Bullin. He was an active member of Rosebud Christian Church for 56 years where he served as a deacon, elder, treasurer, assistant Sunday school superintendent and Sunday school superintendent. He served as either teacher or assistant for the Bible class for 25 years. Mr. Bullin was affiliated with the Stokes County Outreach Ministry since its inception. He always believed in helping those less fortunate than himself and gave countless volunteer hours to the organization. As a retired farmer he loved to work in his garden and on his farm. In addition he was an assistant mail carrier for 22 years and also worked part time for North Carolina Soil Conservation for 14 years. Mr. Bullin was preceded in death by a son, Vernon Terry Bullin, three sisters and one brother. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Mozelle Smith Bullin of the home; two grandsons, Christopher Bullin and wife April of Rural Hall and Clifford Bullin and wife Lisa of Walnut Cove; four great-grandchildren, Jacob Emory Bullin of Rural Hall and Maggie, Samantha and Ethan Bullin of Walnut Cove; and one brother, Willie Bullin of Walnut Cove. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, at Rosebud Christian Church with the Revs. Louis Locke and Paul Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Burroughs Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stokes County, P.O. CHAPPELL

Thurmond Odell Chappell, 70, passed away Feb. 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Born Jan. 21, 1931, son of Charles Clifton and Ola Myers Chappell. Retired from Equifax, Inc. after 38 years of service. He was an active member of Fraternity Church of the Brethren, past Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 736 in Clemmons, and a member of the Board of Directors of Clemmons Fire Dept. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Peggy Dunn Chappell, three sons, Rodney Allen Chappell and wife Lisa, Jonathan Edward Chappell and wife Tina and Peter Wilson Chappell and wife Grace; one son-in-law, Robert Schumacher; seven grandchildren, Eric and Elizabeth Schumacher, Kelsie and Kiley Chappell and Cameron Chappell; two step-grandchildren, Joshua and Ashley Lineberry; two brothers, James Chappell and wife Jean and Leon Chappell and wife Ruth; and two sisters, Grace Walker and Velda Smith. He is also survived by numerous family members and a special friend, Gene Ferguson. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Donald, daughters DeLane Schumacher and Lois Eleanor and son Charles Tracey. Visitation will be at Hayworth-Miller, Silas Creek Parkway, from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4. The funeral will be held at Fraternity Church of the Brethren at 11 a.m. Monday, February 5. CRAVEN

THOMASVILLE - Mr. Hubert Milton Craven, 76, of Britthaven Nursing Home died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at the home. Mr. Craven was born July 27, 1924, in Davidson County, the son of Walter M. Craven and Sallie Stone Craven. He had been an electrical contractor and was a former golf pro at Sapona Country Club in Lexington. In 1995 he retired from Sechrest Funeral Service. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a charter member of the Wallburg Lions Club, Fire Department and Recreation Center. He was a member of Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church. On Jan. 12, 1946, he married Betty Lee Kennedy, and she preceded him in death Jan. 2, 2000. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Betty Jo Motsinger and husband Hugh of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Cathy White and husband J.B. of Thomasville, and Joni Smith and husband Terry of High Point; one sister, Mrs. Jackie Pendry and husband Monroe of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Buren Craven and wife Dot of Salisbury and Johnny Craven and wife Sally of Winston-Salem; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Marguerite Craven of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Rachal Craven of High Point; nine grandchildren, Brian Motsinger, Kevin Motsinger, Scott White, Darren White, Chad White, Brad White, Jason Smith, Heather Smith and Ty Smith; and seven great-grandchildren, Kahla, Kinsley, Megan, Madison, Kayla, Lindsay and Alex. Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Lee Stocks and the Rev. Jack Rose. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Craven will remain at Family Funeral Care and the family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and at other times at the home of his daughter Joni Smith, 4083 N. Hwy. 109, High Point. FISHER

ROCKWELL - Ethel Blackwelder Fisher, 98, of Rockwell died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Autumn Care Nursing Home in Salisbury. Born Oct. 31, 1902, in Concord, Mrs. Fisher was the daughter of the late Carl Dexter and Lecta Furr Blackwelder Sr. She graduated from Monte Amoena Seminary in Mount Pleasant and the Deaconess Training Academy in Baltimore, Md. She also attended Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory. Mrs. Fisher was a loyal and active member of St. James Lutheran Church in Rockwell. She organized and taught the first kindergarten classes, was a Sunday school teacher, served on the church council and was a lifelong member and former president of WELCA. She was also a committed member and former president of the Central Conference of the Women's Missionary Society and taught mission study classes throughout the state of North Carolina. She was honored with a life membership in the Lutheran Seminary Auxiliary. She served as president of the Young At Heart Organization and served on the Rowan County Council on Aging. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Roy Linn Fisher, and her daughter Jean Fisher Poole of Rockwell. Survivors include her children Roselyn Fisher Misenheimer of Rockwell, the Rev. Carl Fisher Sr. of Charlotte and Dr. Marjorie Fisher Matthews of Pilot Mountain; 12 grandchildren and 18 grandchildren; sisters Ruth B. Overman of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Lillian B. Foster of Dallas, Texas; and brother Carl D. Blackwelder Jr. of Concord. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, at Powles Funeral Home . A celebration of Mrs. Fisher's life will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, at St. James Lutheran Church in Rockwell. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Craig Sigmon and the Rev. Charles McManus of Rockwell. Interment will be at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Jean Fisher Poole Scholarship Fund in care of St. James Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 486, Rockwell, NC 28138.

FLYNT

Mrs. Evelyn Tucker Flynt of Winston-Salem was born Aug. 11, 1921 to the Rev. Cicero and Hattie Tucker. She died Feb. 3, 2001 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Tucker; a sister, Daisy Styers; and by her husband, Max Flynt, in 1999. Surviving are her son, Rex Flynt, and his wife, Joeleen, of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Vicki Kornegay, and her husband, Dr. A.D. Kornegay, of Winston-Salem; three granddaughters, Abi Flynt, Margaret Kornegay and Susan Kornegay, and a brother, Ernest Tucker of Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel on Sunday night from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bethany Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Harvey. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family requests that memorials be made to Bethany Baptist Church Building Fund, 600 Old Hollow Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27105.

FORBUS

LEXINGTON, N.C. - John Carl (J.C.) Forbus, 77, of Phillips Road, Lexington, died 10:40 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, in Forsyth Medical Center after several years of declining health. Mr. Forbus was born in Forsyth County on Feb. 15, 1923, to John Wesley Forbus and Earlie Melinda Forbus. He was retired from construction work and was a member of Grapevine Baptist Church in Lewisville. He was preceded in death by his brother W.C. (Buddy) Forbus and sisters Emma Forbus Everhart, Alma Forbus, Bessie Cornish, Irene Everhart and Ella Conrad. Surviving are wife Catherine McDowell Forbus of the home; daughters Deborah Forbus Everhart and husband Hyran Mel of Clemmons, and Anne Forbus Wagoner and husband Michael Ray of Wallburg; grandchildren Andrew Lane Everhart of Clemmons, and Gregory Shane Plott and Taylor Anne Wagoner, both of Wallburg; and sisters Bertha Henning of Winston-Salem and Sallie Canter of Clemmons. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Nolan. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Chapel and other times at the home on Phillips Road.

FOSTER

Mrs. Jennie Bryant Foster, 95, of Winston-Salem died Saturday Feb. 3, 2001, at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit. She was the Daughter of Civil War veteran the Rev. William Riley Bryant and Mother Phebe Tennessee Williams Bryant. Mrs. Foster lived most of her life in Winston-Salem on Sprague Street and Forest Hill Avenue, her last three and a half years at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit. She was married in Winston-Salem Dec. 24, 1927. She was a charter member of Forest Hills Baptist Church, her Beloved Church. She loved her God, her church and her family. She was a charter member of the Battle of Shallowford DAR Club and was in the Daughters of the Confederate and several senior citizens clubs including the Salvation Army Senior Citizens Club. Mrs. Foster had a great love of nature, crafts, genealogy and her many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Foster, in 1953. Surviving are two daughters, Wilma F. Cox and Rachel F. Hancock, both of Winston-Salem; one son, Henry Otis Foster and wife Helen of Greenville; five grandchildren, Leslie F. Parker, Henry O. Foster Jr., Robert E. Hancock, Kelly G. Hancock and Clifton V. Cox Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Clifton V. Cox lll and Zackary A. Parker. Since she was an only child, she had seven first cousins whom she loved as sisters and brothers. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, by the Rev. David Wooten. Burial will follow in Woodland cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

FRANCE

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. - Mr. Thomas Ervin France, 59, died Feb. 1, 2001, in New York City. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Chestnut Ridge Primitive Progressive Baptist Church with interment at Strickland Family cemetery. The family is being served by Howell Funeral Service of Mount Airy.
