BUMGARDNER

FAIRFAX, Va. - Ronald F. Bumgardner died Feb. 12, 2001, at Fairfax Hospital, Fairfax, Va. He was born April 11, 1947, in Winston-Salem and a longtime resident of Springfield, Va. He was the loving husband of Graciela; son of Frank L. Bumgardner; brother of Mark Bumgardner and Marilyn Jones; father of Elizabeth, Tracey and Kimberly; stepfather of Jackeline; uncle of Sam, Lindsey, Sarah and Matt; grandfather of Alyssa, Eric, Jessica, Tori and John; and granduncle of Sophia and Josef. He was preceded in death by his loving mother Frances and brother James.

DOWDLE

HARMONY - Mr. Joseph Lawrence Dowdle, 79, of 307 Little Wilkesboro Road died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. Born in Franklin on Nov. 6, 1921, he was the son of the late William Thomas and Mamie Ledbetter Dowdle. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II and was retired from International Paper Co. Mr. Dowdle was a member of Union Grove United Methodist Church and prior to that was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church in Durham, where he served as Sunday school superintendent and deacon. He was first married to Doris Hendrix, who preceded his in death in 1990. His second marriage was to Sue Pettit Dowdle, who survives. In addition to his wife, Mr. Dowdle is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce D. and Bill Greene of Winston-Salem; a sister, Ethel Hipps of Enka; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Dowdle was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester and Jess Dowdle and three sisters, Lucy Myers, Mary Dowdle and Ruby Nell Dowdle. Funeral services for Mr. Dowdle are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, at Union Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Kirby, the Rev. David Beaty and the Rev. Kermit Gray officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the church. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Baldwin, Ray Dowdle, Rick Dowdle, Steve Dowdle, Howard Johnson, Samuel Myers, Mike Tinsley and Ryan Walker. Burial will be in the Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. Reavis Funeral Home of Harmony is serving the family of Mr. Dowdle.

DUNCAN

WALKERTOWN - Mrs. Janie Ruth Duncan, 69, of 4520 Kings Gate Drive died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Surl Primitive Baptist Church with Pastor Joel Irusta presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Duncan was born in Person County on Aug. 20, 1931, the daughter of Leonard and Mollie Bowles Day. She was a member of the Worldwide Church of God, Winston-Salem Congregation, for 34 years. She was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Lee Day. She is survived by her husband, James Elmo Duncan of the home; her children, June Jeffcoat of West Columbia, S.C., Wanda Moyer of Gainesville, Fla., Stan Duncan of Walkertown, Sally Myrick of Hollywood, Md., and Dolly Gourley of Mebane; six sisters, Louise Faucett of Henderson, Edith Hatcher of Person County, Mary Ann Shotwell and Frances Thompson of Burlington, Clara Duncan and Rachel Vaughn of Person County; two brothers, John Day and Jerry Day of Timberlake; four grandsons; four granddaughters; a stepgranddaughter; a stepgrandson; a great-granddaughter; and two stepgreat-grandsons. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Hanes-Lineberry, Pierce Chapel in Kernersville and 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday prior to the service at the church.

HODGES

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Clessie Hiatt Hodges, 89, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Jan. 22, 1912, to Ausby and Missie Martin Hiatt in Carroll County, Va. She was a member of Home Moravian Church. She retired from R.J. Reynolds after 50 years of service. Mrs. Hodges was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Leon Hodges. She was a very loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Mozelle Hodges Campbell and husband Jim; five grandchildren, Candy Poindexter (Gary), Randy Hoffman (Cathy), Jamie Campbell (Teresa), Adele Bowman (Mark) and Sherri Bodenheimer (Errick); eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a very devoted friend, Mattie Spainhour. Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel by the Rev. Scott Venable and the Rev. Jon Peterson. Burial will follow in the Moravian Graveyard in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Saturday evening, Feb. 24, 2001, at the funeral home.

HOLCOMB

STATESVILLE - Mrs. Irma Angell Holcomb, 88, a resident of Brookridge and formerly of 607 Georgia Ave., Statesville, died Friday morning at Brookridge in Winston-Salem following a lengthy illness. Born in Yadkin County on Aug. 14, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Monrovie Jones Angell and Laura Brown Angell. She was a retired teacher and principal, spending 44 years as an educator. She was a graduate of Harmony High School and received her bachelor's degree from Appalachian State University in primary education. She was a member of College Park Baptist Church in Winston-Salem and a former member of First Baptist Church in Statesville. She was a member of the NCAE and Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Edward Franklin Holcomb, on Aug. 7, 1985. Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Paul D. Angell and M.J. "Rovie" Angell, and two sisters, Mrs. Ruth A. Arnold and Mrs. Ivah A. Hoots. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Louella A. Price of Winston-Salem and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth L. Angell of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Mary Olive T. Angell of Statesville. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Oakwood cemetery in Statesville with the Rev. Charles Edwards officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 prior to the service at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent by e-mail to the family at www.legacy.com. JOYCE

MADISON - Mr. Jimmie Green Joyce Sr., 80, of 1295 Goad Road died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at the J.R. Jones Medical Center in King. His funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at the Ray Funeral Home Chapel in Madison. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Baptist Church cemetery in Madison. Mr. Joyce was a lifelong resident of Stokes County, was retired from Macfield Inc., was also a retired farmer and a World War II Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his wives, Frances Wood Joyce, Kathleen Joyce and Helen Jessup Joyce; two sisters; and three brothers. He is survived by his daughter, Virginia Newman of Mayodan; sons Ralph Joyce and wife Irene of Mayodan, Donald Joyce of Reidsville and Jimmy Joyce Jr. and wife Janice of Madison; sister Rachel Joyce Duggins of Mayodan; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Ray Funeral Home in Madison and all other times at the home of Jimmy and Janice Joyce, 1235 Goad Road, Madison.

LEONARD

THOMASVILLE - Mr. John Matthew Leonard, 80, a resident of 149 Jacob St. Ext., died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, in Community General Hospital. He was born April 28, 1920, in Davidson County the son of Edward Leonard and Lula Belle Beck Leonard. He had been a resident of this area the greater part of his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He retired from Thomasville Furniture Industries, Plant V, with over 29 years of service. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Mrs. Elva Hardy Leonard of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Ann Wallace and her husband Donald of Lexington; two sons, John Wayne Leonard and his wife Martha of Lexington and Allen Leonard and Janice of Thomasville; three sisters, Mrs. T.J. (Mary Dessie) Hicks, Mrs. Dora Miller and Mrs. Tommy (Emma) Lee, all of Thomasville; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the J.C. Green & Sons Chapel with the Rev. Cecil Worley officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery in Churchland. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and other times at the home. MORRISON

ELKIN - Mrs. Virgie Wall Morrison, 90, of North Wilkesboro, formerly of Elkin, died Friday morning, Feb. 23, 2001, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel. by Dr. Bill Johnson, the Rev. Joe Dell Rust and the Rev. Luther Chambers. Burial will be in Crestwood Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Morrison was born in Surry County on Jan. 4, 1911, to William Henry Harrison (Dickie) and Lue Cindy Draughn Wall. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Elkin. She operated movie theaters in Elkin and North Wilkesboro with her husband, Garland Morrison, who preceded her in death in 1995. Surviving are four sisters, Elsie (Alton) Boyd and Alice Caudle of Elkin, Edna Mounce of Ronda and Hester Laffoon of Kernersville; three sisters-in-law, Nell Wall of Elkin, Helen Wall of Midland, Mich., and Lucille Osborne of Salem, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. The family suggests that any memorials be made to First Baptist Church in Elkin. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday prior to the service at Kennedy Funeral Home in Elkin.

SHELTON

PINNACLE - Eddie "Ed" Wilson Shelton, 60, of 3498 Volunteer Road passed away Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at the Northern Hospital of Surry County. He was born June 26, 1940, in Stokes County to Edgar Curtis and Ommie Lee Lane Shelton. He was a dockworker for Yellow Freight Co., an avid golfer and sports enthusiast and of the Baptist faith. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Posey Shelton of the home; stepson, Jeffrey Allan Joyce of Tenafly, N.J.; two sisters, Judy Forrest of Pinnacle and Katie Koontz of High Point; a brother, Curtis Melvin Shelton of Pinnacle; two stepgrandchildren, Kerry Isobel Triston and Sean Joyce Triston; and his mama-in-law, Mintoria Bowman Posey of Pinnacle. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Olive Grove Baptist Church cemetery. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home. Family members may be contacted at their respective homes. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 550 East Morehead Street, Suite 2211, Charlotte, NC 28202. The Shelton family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.

SLEAP

Miss Katherine "K.T." Mary Sleap, 17, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Kenmore, N.Y., died suddenly Thursday morning from a motor-vehicle accident. Katie was a well liked, popular senior at R.J. Reynolds High School. She participated in the all-country and all-state orchestras along with serving as co-president of the Girls Council at Reynolds. She was a six-year member of the Winston-Salem Youth Symphony and played in the first violin section. Katie earned a Girl Scout Gold Award in 1999 by instructing violin music for youth along with concert performances for seniors. She was a member of the Kid Commerce Program. In 1998 she earned a MMBA (mini master's in business administration) in business and started her own business, "Katie's Violin Academy". Katie lived life to the fullest, bringing joy and laughter to many friends and family. She is survived by her parents, Richard E. and Monica L. Sleap, and her sister, Jennifer Leigh Sleap, all of Winston-Salem; maternal grandmother Irene K. Johnson of Cary; paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Sleap of Kenmore, N.Y.; numerous aunts and uncles, Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Goebel of Lake Forest, Calif., Mary K. Johnson of Kenmore, N.Y., Dr. and Mrs. Peter C. Johnson of Wexford, Pa., Mr. and Mrs. Patrick L. Johnson of East Amherst, N.Y., Mr. and Mrs. Carey Fleming of Boyds, Md., Ms. Madonna Johnson of Durham, Mr. and Mrs. David J. Jacobius of Pfafftown, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph W. Sleap of Kenmore, N.Y. and Mrs. Robert Moreland of Kenmore, N.Y.; and numerous cousins, Caroline, Tommy and Elizabeth Johnson, Christopher and Kevin Johnson, Brian and Brittany Fleming, Allie and Joshua Jacobius, Lindsay and Joseph Sleap, Tyler, Natalie and Bridget Sleap and Chase Moreland. A Celebration of Life service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25 at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home, 2951 Reynolda Road. SPARKS

HAMPTONVILLE - Mrs. Irene Sales Sparks, 76, of Sparks Road passed away Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Northeast Medical Center. Mrs. Sparks was born in Wilkes County on Feb. 4, 1925, to Arthur F. and Bertha Mathis Sale. Mrs. Sparks was retired from Sunbeam and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Sparks. Survivors include two daughters; Teri Sparks of the home and Karen Morris of Harrisburg, two sisters; Winnie Mae Pardue of Arlington and Ethel Louise Haynes of Ronda, two grandchildren; Kevin and Kristin Morris of Harrisburg. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Joe Souther and the Rev. Larry Lefler. Mrs. Sparks will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7 to 9 at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church Building Fund.

THORNTON

Mrs. Edith Motsinger Thornton, 87, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001. She was born in Davidson County to Sadie and William Henry Motsinger. Mrs. Thornton loved life and was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. She was a beautician for 65 years and operated her own beauty shop for 45 years. Her customers were friends as well as clients. Her faith and love for her family and friends were her life, and anyone who met her, instantly loved her. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, W.C. "Bill" Thornton; a brother, Odell Motsinger; and two sisters, Josephine Hargett and Willie Jean Hines. Surviving are a daughter, Patricia "Pat" Reinhardt and husband John (Eddie) Reinhardt, formerly of Pat's Produce; a stepson, James "Jimmy" Thornton of Durham; six grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren whom she adored and was known as "Mam-maw" and "Mee-maw"; two sisters, Georgia Burton of Morehead City and Marie Winfree of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Roland T. Barnhardt officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. Mrs. Thornton's final days were in the care of Hospice for which they cared for her in her home. The family would greatly appreciate any donations to be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

WALLACE

HARMONY - Mrs. Lora Harris Wallace, 95, of 149 Tobacco Road died Thursday at Autumn Care of Mocksville. She was a native of Yadkin County, born June 9, 1905, a daughter of the late Charlie Lee and Martha Alice Haynes Harris. Mrs. Wallace was a homemaker. On Nov. 7,1925, she married Thomas Binkley Wallace, who preceded her in death April 12, 1992. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Sidney Roland Wallace, who died in 1963; three brothers, Claude and Alfred and an infant brother; and two sisters, Bertha Harris and an infant sister. Mrs. Wallace is survived by a son, Charles Buford Wallace and his wife Maude of Harmony; a daughter, Margaret Wallace Myers of Harmony; a sister-in-law, Lacie Wallace Pegram of Clemmons; a sister, Bessie Harris Moose of Harmony; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are stepgrandchildren; stepgreat-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Mrs. Wallace was a lifelong member of Sandy Springs Baptist Church, where she was very active as long as her health permitted. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Sandy Springs Baptist Church cemetery conducted by a grandson, the Rev. Dale Wallace. The family will speak with friends from 12:30 to 1:30 at the Reavis Funeral Home in Harmony. Pallbearers will be Mike, Chad and Ben Wallace, Chris Meinburg, Sam Myers Jr., Sam Myers III and Thomas Wallace Myers. WHICKER

Mrs. Mary E. Vanhoy Whicker, 89, of Homestead Hills Assisted Living Center since March 2000 and formerly of 3961 Northampton Drive, Winston-Salem, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Aug. 18, 1911, in Forsyth County to D.H. Vanhoy Sr. and Lulu M. Vanhoy. Mrs. Whicker was a member of Oak Grove Moravian Church, where she was also a member of the Margaret Hammock Sunday school class and Women's Fellowship. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Fred Whicker; a brother, Howard W. Vanhoy; and her parents. Surviving are a brother, D.H. Vanhoy Jr. of Winston-Salem, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at Oak Grove Moravian Church with the Rev. Norman Byerly officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Oak Grove Moravian Church, 120 Hammock Farm Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105.

WILLKIE

Mrs. Virginia Sumner Willkie, 79, of Winston-Salem passed away Feb. 22, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Sept. 26, 1921, in New York, N.Y., to J.C. and Elsa Lichtilichti Sumner. She was a member of Home Moravian Church and supported the American Humane Society. She was a loving friend to all animals. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday Feb. 25, 2001, at Salem cemetery with the Rev. Gerald Harris officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Humane Society, 61 Miller St., Winston-Salem, NC 27113. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of services.

ASHLEY

Tex Junior Ashley, 62, passed away Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Oct. 5, 1938, in Wilkes County to Ernest H. and Maggie E. Ashley. He worked as a mechanic at the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission. He is survived by six brothers, Ernest Jr. and Judy Ashley, Paul E. Ashley of Elkin, Rex A. and Vonda Ashley of Ronda, Jimmy W. and Barbara Ann Ashley, Vernon Jr. and Reba Ashley of Jonesville and Robert D. of North Wilkesboro; and a sister, Audrey and Larry Owens of N. Wilkesboro. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at East Elkin Full Gospel Holiness Church, conducted by the Rev. F. Haynes Moore, the Rev. Neal Wilcox and the Rev. Jerry Childress. Mr. Ashley will lie in state from 10:30 to 11. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission Chapel by Chaplain Hobart Stephens.
