PICKETT

LEWISVILLE - Mr. Donald Farrington Pickett, 76, died Monday, May 7, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Feb. 1, 1925, in Fort Riley, Kan., to the late Clyde and Ann Richardson Pickett. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a very active member of Brookstown United Methodist Church, a member of The Gideons International and a graduate of Texas A&M. He had been an electrical engineer with Western Electric most of his career and was a volunteer at Vienna Elementary School. He had been an instructor for the American Red Cross and served formerly as a scoutmaster. He was also a member of Lewisville Safety Committee and years ago had been a deputy sheriff in Texas and a policeman in Arlington, Va. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Irene Keeton Pickett; and two brothers. Surviving are a son, Robert L. Pickett of Florida; a daughter, Cheryl Patton of Winston-Salem; six grand-children; six great-grand-children; and a brother, Clyde Pickett Jr. of Portland, Ore. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2001, at Brookstown United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Eugene Dean and a Gideon, Mr. Tim Lasley. Interment will be at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home, Reynolda Road. PREVETTE

WILKESBORO - Mrs. Anna Lucille Willingham Buckner Prevette, 81, a resident of Avante in Wilkesboro, died Thursday morning at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. She was the daughter of Thomas L. Willingham, a Baptist minister, originally of Macon, Ga., and his wife, Elizabeth Tesh Willingham of Winston-Salem. Preceding her in death were her twin, Mrs. Bessie Cassells of Rock Hill, S.C., and her eldest son, David G. Buckner Jr. of Greenville, S.C. Surviving are her children, Thomas L. Buckner Sr. of Apex, H. Eugene Buckner of Green-ville, S.C., Mrs. Bradley S. "Phoebe" McNeil Sr. of Millers Creek and Clyde E. Prevette Jr. of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a beloved nephew, Harvey T. Cassells Jr. of Charlotte; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Gore officiating. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Miller Funeral Service. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Millers Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 5100 Boone Trail, Millers Creek, NC 28651.

PURYEAR

TOBACCOVILLE - Mr. Alfred Eugene Puryear, 55, of 7185 Fisher Road was born Nov. 22, 1945, to Sam Henry Puryear Sr. and Cora Almeter Smith Puryear. On the morning of May 9, 2001, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ called Alfred from labor to reward. Alfred was born in Yadkin County and moved to Forsyth County with his family at a very early age. He attended Carver School and served his country in the U.S. Army. Alfred later became a small-engine mechanic by trade and was employed by the Fuller Pulpwood Co. Alfred remained a help to his parents and their love of farming the land until they preceded him in death. Also, Alfred is preceded in death by a daughter, Charlene Denise Puryear. Surviving are two sons, Sgt. Alfred Eugene Puryear Jr. of Camp Lejeune, and Larry Eugene Puryear; a grandson, Kendrick LaShawn Puryear of Richardson, Texas; two brothers, the Rev. Sam H. (Beverly) Puryear Jr. and the Rev. William H. (Syteria) Puryear; a sister, Mary Frances Puryear, all of Tobaccoville; two aunts, Bessie G. Puryear and Willie Mae Massey; an uncle, Thomas L. (Lena) Puryear, all of East Bend; the mother of his children, Linda G. Fisher of Winston-Salem; five nephews, one who preceded him in death, the Rev. Christopher (Melissa) Puryear, Samuel Vincent (Patrice), Phillip Elijah, Charles Jordan, William Puryear II and Geoffrey Adolphus Hauser; a niece, Allison Thressa Puryear; two great-nieces, Alicia Diana and Venitra Lynia Puryear; a great-great-nephew, Samuel Vincent II; a very special friend, Margie Hooker of Tobaccoville; and other beloved relatives and friends. On Saturday, May 12, 2001, the family visitation will be observed at 3 p.m. with the Homegoing celebration follow-ing at the Benbow Chapel AME Zion Church in East Bend. Interment will be in the Benbow Chapel AME Zion Church cemetery. The Rev. Louis Hunter Jr. is the pastor. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to Ben-bow Chapel AME Zion Church.

SALES

Mrs. Alma Swaim Sales, 89, of Winston-Salem died Wednes-day, May 9, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Sales was born July 15, 1911, in Forsyth County to Eli and Mary Swaim. Mrs. Sales worked at R.J. Reynolds for 18 years and was a member of Ketner's Church of Christ. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Edward Sales Sr.; three brothers, Authur Swaim, Emery Swaim and Fair Swaim; three sisters, Eunice Wright, Maude Parnell and Gladys Parnell. Mrs. Sales is survived by two daughters, Hilda (Dennis) McClaugherty and Wanda (Bob) Russell of Winston-Salem; two sons Clyde Jr. and wife Eulalia Sales of Winston-Salem and Jerry Sales of the home; six grandchildren, Tammy, Tabitha, Brad, Dana, Tatiana and Tyna; seven great-grandchildren, with one due in August; and a loving dog, Sadie. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2001, at Church of Christ at Ketner's, with Mr. Donald Sloan officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

SIMON

Mr. Willie Jean Simon, affectionately known as "Pete," of 3879 Barkwood Drive passed Tuesday, May 8, 2001. He was a graduate of Atkins High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army, 101st Airborne Division. Mr. Simon was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and a member of the American Legion Post 220. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Haney Simon. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2001, in the chapel of Hooper Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Constance D. Simon of King and Clarissa Simon Tabon of Wilson; four grandchildren, D'Artangan LaNard Simon, Princess Yvette Simon, Shanita Marie Simon and Grayson Simon; two great-grandchildren, Shi'liyah Darze and Dionte Denard Wallace; three brothers, Jackson Simon Jr. of Winston-Salem, Herbert Lee (Patricia) Simon of New Haven, Conn., and James Lee Simon of Bronx, N.Y.; a loving and devoted friend, Jacquelyn Lindsay; a devoted goddaughter, Viola Lindsay, both of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law; three brothers-in-law; nieces; nephews; relatives; and friends. SMITH

Mr. Jack Javan Smith, 80, of 720 Hertford Road died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Smith was born Dec. 12, 1920, to the late Walter Lee and Hattie Reid Smith. He lived all of his life in Winston-Salem, where he was educated in the public schools. He was a former member of the Administrative Management Society and was honored with the Boss of the Year Award. A member of First Baptist Church for more than 50 years, he served on the board of deacons, was a member of the church choir for 33 years and was a member and a former president of the Enabler Sunday school class. In addition, Mr. Smith was currently a member of the Twin City Kiwanis Club, a member of the Pinebrook Country Club for more than 30 years and a World War II Air Force veteran. He retired as office manager and corporate secretary from Frank Vogler & Sons Inc. after 38 years of service. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Thelma Moore Smith of the home; his four children, Pamela S. Compton and husband Keith A. Compton of Clemmons, Brad Smith and wife Jerri, also of Clemmons, Lynne S. Marschke and husband Keith of San Diego, Calif., and Marc J. Smith and wife Pamela of Lewisville; and his seven grandchildren, Courtney and Blair Smith of Clemmons, Jonathan A. Compton of Clemmons, Julianne and Jenna Smith of Lewisville and Mary Kate and Jack Bryan Marschke of San Diego, Calif. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, with Dr. David Hughes and the Rev. Henry Stokes officiating. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. TAMER

Mickey Tamer, 77, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a lengthy battle with diabetes. and renal failure. He was born George Andrew Tamer Sr. in Richmond, Va., on April 21, 1924. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army in Italy. Mickey and Pearl were married Feb. 6, 1946. He was a long-standing member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. He and his family owned and operated Mickey's Place, a neighborhood grocery store and community landmark, from 1960 until he and his wife retired in 1980. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph George and Victoria Ann Gussin Tamer of Beirut, Lebanon; brothers Fred, Jimmy, Dick and Pete; and sisters Emma and Martha. He is survived by his loved and loving wife, Pearl Welborn Tamer of the home; nine children, Joseph and wife Pamela of Bat Cave, Mickey and wife Dee Dee of Manassas, Va., Anthony and wife Vicky of Lewisville, Victoria and husband Calvin Nash of Winston-Salem, George "Andrew" Jr. and wife Liza of Lewisville, Christopher and wife Katie of Rural Hall, Regina and husband Phillip Player of Lewisville, Patrick and wife Dana of Raleigh, and Susan and husband Joe Bleckley of Lewisville; 20 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary "Terri" Dunnagan of Corsicana, Texas. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church on South Main Street with Father Conall McHugh officiating. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. at Crestview Memorial Park followed by a reception at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 11, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, preceded by a rosary at 6:45 p.m. If a person's heart is measured by how much others loved him, then Mickey had one of the biggest.

TURNER

HAMPTONVILLE - Mr. Commie W. Turner, 89, formerly of Hunting Creek Church Road, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Yadkin Heritage Extended Care in Yadkinville. He was born Feb. 8, 1912, the son of Wiley Turner and Julie Hayes Turner. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and a farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Flossie Prevette Turner; his parents; and two brothers, Frank and Thurmond Turner. Surviving are two daughters, Juanita (Calvin) Nowling of Tallahassee, Fla., and Jerleene (Harold) Lashmit of Pfafftown; a son, James (Janis) Turner of Mebane; a sister, Ethel Gilliam of Conover; five brothers, Edgar of Harmony and Carl, the Rev. Roy Turner, Marvin and Vernon, all of Hamptonville; a grandson, Barry Turner; and a great-grandson, Carson Turner. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, May 11, at New Hope Baptist Church, Hamptonville, with the Rev. Larry Andrews and the Rev. Jerry Yarborough officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends an hour before the service. Memorials may be made to the church cemetery fund. Mackie-Reavis Funeral Home in Yadkinville will be serving the family.

VESTAL

JONESVILLE - Mrs. Bobby Laffoon Vestal, 69, died Thursday May 10, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Vestal was born Dec. 2, 1931, in Surry County to Herman H. and Bessie Burch Laffoon. She was a retired hairdresser and was an instructor at Regency Beauty College in Elkin. Her husband, Vertle J. Vestal, and her parents preceded her in death. Surviving are her three children, Janice Shields of Jonesville, Michael J. Vestal and wife Kathi of Pilot Mountain and Jamie Davis of Jonesville; four grandchildren, Scottie Shields, Teresa and Kimberly Vestal and Shannon Davis; two sisters, Mrs. Jo (Bob) Vestal of Jonesville and Mrs. Mary Ann Neven of Elkin; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday May 12, 2001, at Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. Spencer Brown. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2001, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 4517 Little Mountain Road, Jonesville, and all other times at 5708 Armstrong Road, Jones-ville. Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund or to the charity of the donor's choice.

YOUNG

Mr. Moir Rex Young, 76, of 837 E. Devonshire St. died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Nov. 9, 1924, in Walnut Cove to James W. and Emma Smith Young. Mr. Young served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and was the owner of Young Motors on Waughtown Street for 12 years. He retired from Flow Motors Inc. after 25 years of service and worked part time for another 10 years. He was a member of the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Sandra Young Stewart; a sister; and several brothers. Survivors include his wife, Carrie S. Young of the home; two sons, M. Ricky Young and wife Susan L. of Forsyth County and Christopher S. Stewart and wife Zein of Texas; two daughters, Karen Egerton and husband Stuart of Wilmington and Wendy Sealey and husband Carty of Lexington; three grandchildren, Carrie and Charlotte Egerton of Wilmington and Keith Young of Winston-Salem; two great-grandchildren, Samantha Sealey of Lexington and Claire Stewart of Texas; and two sisters, Ila Chatman of Germanton and Dorothy Alley and husband Lester of Walnut Cove. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Moravian Graveyard by the Rev. Patricia Garner and the Rev. Henry May. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or Trinity Moravian Church, 220 E. Sprague St., Winston-Salem, NC 27127.

BARKER

ROARING RIVER - Mr. Robert Barker, 82, of Austin Little Mountain Road passed away Friday, May 11, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Barker was born Nov. 2, 1918, in Wilkes County to Tyre and Susie Handy Barker. Mr. Barker was a loving husband, father and grandfather and a friend to all. Mr. Barker retired from Chatham Manufacturing and Raco Telephone and was a member of Oak Level Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and a trustee. Mr. Barker also served on the Wilkes Telephone Board. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Denver Barker and two sisters, Hattie Carter and Mattie Brooks. Survivors include his wife, Pauline P. Barker of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Libby Barker of Wilkesboro and Greg and Donna Barker of Roaring River; a daughter, Pamela Blackburn of Elkin; and four grandchildren, Zach Barker, Maria Blackburn, Courtney Barker and Meghan Barker. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 2001, at Oak Level Baptist Church by the Rev. James Hall, the Rev. E.R. Wiles and T.D. Carter. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Barker will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Saturday evening at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Oak Level Baptist Church Building Fund.

BOWMAN

Mr. Billie Pardue Bowman Jr., 57, died suddenly May 10, 2001, at his home in Newport. Mr. Bowman was born Jan. 7, 1944, in Forsyth County to Billie and Opal Everhart Bowman Sr. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and was an active supporter of the Newport Little League. He also was an active member and usher of the Glad Tidings Church in Newport. Mr. Bowman grew up in the Sedge Garden area and was an active member at Pine Chapel Moravian Church during his residence here. He had lived most of his adult life in Newport, where he was owner of Bill Bowman Truck & Auto Mart. Mr. Bowman was preceded in death by his father, Billie Pardue Bowman Sr. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Weavil Bowman of the home; a daughter, Lori Lynn Bowman of Charlotte; a son, Christopher Gray Bowman of Newport; his mother, Opal Everhart Bowman of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Charlie Coyt Bowman of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2001, at the Moravian Graveyard with the Rev. Matthew Allen and the Rev. Maurice Phelps officiating.

CARANDOLA

Mrs. Eleanor Moser Carandola, 66, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Silas Creek Manor. She was born March 1, 1935, in Forsyth County. Mrs. Carandola was a member of Forsyth Park Baptist Church and also a member of the choir. She was a member of the ABWA of Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ann Fishel Adams and her stepfather, George L. Adams. Surviving are four daughters, Leslie Diane Kirby and husband Rodney of Hickory, Audrey Jane Hogan of Clemmons, Eleanor Anne Hogan of Lewisville and Rosalind Hogan Ross of Lewisville; a son, Edward Litton and wife Cheryl of Lewisville; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Lynn Williamson and husband Richard of Lewisville; a beloved aunt, Lillian P. Fishel of Winston-Salem; and a niece and two nephews. A celebration of life service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Forsyth Park Baptist Church by Dr. Richard Capps. The family will receive friends after the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Forsyth Park Baptist Church, 1600 S. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Wake Forest Uni-versity-Baptist Medical Center, Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem, NC 27157.

CARTER

Mr. Elwood C. Carter, 81, formerly of Fairway Drive, died Wednesday evening at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Winston-Salem on July 10, 1919, to Gray Edward Carter and Eva Mae Spaugh Carter. Mr. Carter graduated from Old Town High School and served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the 2nd Battalion of the 118th National Guard Infantry Regiment, Nationalized. He went to work with Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co. in 1947, and was a buyer until his retirement in 1979. Mr. Carter was also a building contractor. He was a life member of Ardmore United Methodist Church. Preceding him in death was his wife, Flora Pfaff Carter, whom he married in 1947. Surviving are his three children, Susan Carter Shelton of Elkin and his twins, Sharon Francois of Redmond, Wash., and Sterling E. Carter of Winston-Salem; three grand-children, Carter Francois, William Thomas Shelton III and Claire Elizabeth Carter; and a brother, Raymond Carter of Kernersville. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ardmore United Methodist Church, with Dr. William T. Medlin III officiating. Interment will be in Forsyth Memorial Park Memorials may be made to Ardmore United Methodist Church, 630 S. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the family.

EARL

HIGH POINT - Mrs. Charlotte Harrelson Harmon Earl, 75, died May 10, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital. Mrs. Earl was born in Randolph County on Feb. 18, 1926, a daughter of Levi and Ollie Millikan Harrelson. She had been a resident of High Point for the past 53 years. Mrs. Earl was a member of Lexington Avenue Baptist Church and attended First Pentecostal Holiness Church in High Point. She was a homemaker and had previously been associated with Brunswick Tar Heel Lanes of High Point. She was past president of High Point Mineral Club, a member of High Point Women of the Moose, a member of High Point Women's Bowling Association and was a charter member of Club 55 at Tar Heel Lanes. Mrs. Earl was a NASCAR racing fan and was a loving mother and granny to her family and friends. She was married to H.D. Earl, who died April 3, 1988. She was preceded in death by a son, Tony Harmon, on Jan. 25, 1993. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Faye and Norman Parnell Jr. of Kernersville and Darlene and Gary Bryant of High Point; three sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Bonnie Harmon and Kevin and Sallie Harmon, all of High Point, and Joseph and Mary Harmon of Spring Lake; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Susan Harmon of the residence; two sisters, Edna Loflin and Rebecca Raymond of Franklinville; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Connie (Edna) Greeson of Julian; four brothers, Charles and Billy Harrelson of Asheboro, Bobby Harrelson of Randleman and Gurney Harrelson of Kannapolis; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Sechrest Chapel by the Rev. Randy Claypoole and the Rev. B. Joe Parker. Interment will follow in Gilmore Memorial Park cemetery in Julian. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Sechrest Funeral Service, 1301 E. Lexington Ave., High Point, and other times at the residence. Memorials may be directed to Horneytown Volunteer Fire Department, 102 Horneytown Road, High Point, NC 27265 or to the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oakbranch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27407.
