Robert Hoke Rust, 76, of Winston-Salem, died Feb. 16, 2002, at his home. Graveside service will be held at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church in Cherryville.

CLAUDVILLE, Va. - Mr. William (Willie) Sidney Smith, 54, passed away on Friday, Feb. 15, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy.

SPRINKLE

EAST BEND - Mrs. Irene Elizabeth Sprinkle, 77, of 2429 Binkley Road, passed away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Elkin Healthcare Center in Elkin. Mrs. Sprinkle was born in Yadkin County on June 19, 1924, to Mr. Winford Lee Finney and Mrs. Ila Bryant Finney. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Reed Sprinkle, two brothers and two sisters. Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Betty and Norman Lyon of East Bend, Mrs. Carol and Robert Bray of Hamptonville, Mrs. Norma Jean Smoot of Ronda and Mrs. Frances Gentry of Elkin; a brother, J.E. Finney, of Jonesville, and a host of loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. E.R. Wiles. Burial will follow at Charity United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home in Elkin.

TAYLOR

Mr. Stephen Thomas Taylor, 30, of Winston-Salem, died Saturday morning Feb. 16, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born Feb. 12, 1972, in Forsyth County to Gary and Janet Taylor. Stephen graduated from Mount Tabor High School in 1990 and was a member of Robinhood Road Baptist Church. He was an avid golfer and former member of the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department. Stephen was employed by Piedmont Cheerwine, where he was named salesman of the year. Surviving are his wife, Kristin Taylor, and their two children, April and Brandon, of the home; his parents of Winston-Salem; a sister, Kathy Taylor, of Winston-Salem; and a grandmother, Audrey York, of Kernersville; and his mother in-law and father in-law, Barbara and Ernie Kilpatrick, of Downsville, N.Y. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by Pastor Levy Goodrich. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Robinhood Road Baptist Church, 5422 Robinhood Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

LEXINGTON - Linda Hinkle Teague, 54, died Feb. 15, 2002. Funeral services will be on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel.

THIGPEN

WALKERTOWN - Mrs. Geraldine Faye Bailey Thigpen, 59, died Friday, Feb. 15, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born March 11, 1942, in Durham to George Marion and Nonnie Estelle Barber. Mrs. Thigpen was preceded in death by her parents; and her daughter, Gina Tondreau. Survivors include her husband, Charles David Thigpen II of the home; three daughters, Elizabeth Ann Tondreau of Winston-Salem, Melissa Ann Lloyd and husband Tommy of Thomasville and Jo Ellen Earnhardt and husband Mark of Kernersville; eight grand-children; two stepdaughters, Laurie Lynn Lubinski of Durham and Deidre Michelle Thigpen of Wytheville, Va.; a sister, Mary Bailey Thomas of Winston-Salem; and a niece, Elizabeth Hope Thomas of Richmond, Va. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pine Grove United Methodist Church in Kernersville by the Rev. Howard D. Fleming. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 25086, Winston-Salem, NC 27114. (Arrangements are by Vogler & Son's Main Street Chapel.)

TRAVIS

MOUNT AIRY - Ms. Wilma Lee King Travis, 63, of 1413 Henri St., Mount Airy, passed away Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Ms. Travis was born in Surry County on March 2, 1938, the daughter of the late Hugh Wilbur and Mary Lena Beasley King. Ms. Travis was a retired nurse anesthetist, where she served at Saint Luke's Hospital in Houston, Texas, Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy, and Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, and was a member of Grace Moravian Church. Survivors include four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Barbara and Emmett Forrest, Erline and Jim Miller, and Polly Cox, all of Mount Airy, and Frances and Bill Caudle of Christiansburg, Va.; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and -nephews; and a host of special friends. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Grace Moravian Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Timothy Byerly. The family will receive friends on Sunday immediately following the memorial service in the fellowship hall of Grace Moravian Church. The family has requested that memorials be made to Grace Moravian Church, 1401 N. Main St., Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy is serving the Travis family.

TURNER

LEXINGTON - Ellis Eugene Turner, 74, of Welcome Community, Lexington, died Saturday morning at 4:30 a.m. in Forsyth Medical Center after declining health of 7 years. Mr. Turner was born in Georgia Town, Ga., on Jan. 1, 1928, to Claude Ellis Turner and Stella Etheridge Turner. He was a retired employee of Miller Desk Co. in High Point and of the Baptist faith. Surviving are his spouse, Peggy H. Turner of the home; blessed with four daughters, Florecia Johnson and husband Gary of High Point, Bonnie Lynn of Welcome, Lugene Ward and husband Kenny, Mary Finney and husband Greg, both of Lexington; sisters, Evelyn Louise Hollifield of Welcome; 10 grandchildren, Rochelle Johnson Chrisco, Roby Johnson, Chris Lynn, Gabe Lynn, Jason Lynn, Jeremy Beck, Jacob Beck, Jennifer Beck, Cassidi Finney and Bailey Finney; a great-grandchild; a stepgreat-grandchild; and a great-grandchild due in August. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree and other times at the home. Flowers will be accepted. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Forest Hill Memorial Park and will be conducted by the Rev. Wes Brown. Burial will be at Forest Hill Memorial Park.

TURNER

GREENSBORO - Perry Albert Turner Jr., 66, died on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Moses Cone Hospital. Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Christ Lutheran Church with Dr. Dwight Shellaway officiating. Mr. Turner graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor of science degree in business administration in 1957. He retired from Wachovia Bank after 35 years of services as senior vice president in 1994. Mr. Turner was also a member of Christ Lutheran Church, and he was an avid hunter. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ann G. Turner, with whom he shared 42 wonderful years of marriage. Also his father, Perry A. Turner Sr. and wife Melody of Greensboro; his brother Dr. Gerald Turner and wife Barbara of Statesville; sisters, Margie Sherrill and husband Leslie of Hickory, Joan Moore and husband John of Hickory; two grandchildren, Jessica A. Turner, 13, and Morgan E. Turner, 5, of Greensboro. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Society or Christ Lutheran Church. 3600 Lawndale Drive, Greensboro, NC 27408. TUTTLE

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. William Curtis "Bill" Tuttle Sr., of 157 Corbin St., Winston Salem, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Tuttle was born in Forsyth County, a son of the late Broadus and Ruth Mae Price Tuttle, and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are his wife, Jean Reid Tuttle of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Alan Wilson of Rougemont; two sons, Jimmy Tuttle of Kernersville and Randy Tuttle of Colfax; sisters and their husbands, Carol and P.D. Swain of Summerfield, Nancy Tuttle, Joyce and Charles Chamelin, Sandra and Richard Hendrix, Terry and David Joyce, Betty and Bruce Vogt, all of Kernersville, Pat and Frank Godbee of Lexington; brothers and their wives, Buddy and Debby Tuttle, Morris and Janice Tuttle, and Wayne Tuttle, all of Kernersville; grandchildren, Jonathan, James and Jordan Wilson of Rougemont, Joey and Misty Tuttle of Charlotte. Funeral service will be conducted Monday 2 p.m. at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in the Mount Gur cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

THOMASVILLE - Carl Jasper "Bill" Wray, 83, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, in Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services will be on Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at 2 p.m. in Liberty Baptist Chuch.

BENNETT

Mr. Roland Lafayette Bennett Jr., 85, of Winston-Salem died Friday, March 1, 2002, at his home. He was born Feb. 25, 1917, in Forsyth County to Roland Lafayette Bennett Sr. and Amy Hester Bennett. Mr. Bennett was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a lifetime member of Fairview Moravian Church and head usher for more than 30 years, never missing the Easter Sunrise Service in Salem's God's Acre. With his father and brother-in-law he operated Bennett's Lunch in downtown Winston-Salem for many, many years, retiring in 1981. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Edith Coltrane Bennett of the home; two daughters, Linda Rainey and Elena Jeanne Bennett; a son, Bradley Lafayette Bennett and wife Sue; four grandchildren, Carrie Koy and husband Bill, Kristen Bennett, Scott Rainey and Justin Bennett; a great-grandson, Tyler Joseph Koy; and a sister, Jane Mendenhall and husband Ed. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 4, 2002, at Fairview Moravian Church, with Riddick Weber, Dr. Henry May and the Rev. Robert Rierson officiating. Interment will follow in the Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

BLACKBURN

LEXINGTON - James Michael Blackburn, 56, the husband of Barbara Pike Blackburn, died Friday at Lexington Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel.

BOLES

PINNACLE - Mrs. Annis Marie Gordon Boles, 72, wife of William Harold Boles of 2904 N. Old Highway 52, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2002, surrounded by family at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Nov. 24, 1929, in Stokes County to Thomas Franklin and Rose Belle Jones Gordon. Mrs. Boles was a businesswoman and partner of Boles Hardware and Boles Grocery, a sponsor and advocate of the Pinnacle Scouting Program, Troop 400, a member of the Women's VFW Auxiliary of Pinnacle, the Pinnacle Fire Department Women's Auxiliary and a member and former board member of Pinnacle United Methodist Church. Mrs. Boles will be remembered by some for her dedicated spirit as an astute businesswoman. For more than 50 years, she helped develop Boles Hardware, Grocery and Variety into a thriving local business. But to many, she will be most remembered as a kind and loving woman who opened her heart and life to all she knew and met. She served many roles in life, including devoted wife, caring mother and treasured grandmother. Her most revered role was that of a true Christian woman and friend who gave selflessly to others, even during times of her own personal struggle. Her close relationship with Christ was evidenced by her devotion to her family and friends. Mrs. Boles' life is a testament to God's enduring love for others and her memory will be forever cherished by those whose lives she so graciously touched. She is survived by her husband, W. Harold Boles of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy Boles and Harry Holden Dutton of Durham; a son and daughter-in-law, Van William and Sharon Hicks Boles of Pinnacle; three grandsons, Matthew Holden Dutton and wife, Arrin of Raleigh, Brian William Dutton of Durham and Preston William Boles of Pinnacle; two brothers, Glenn Maurice Gordon of Pinnacle and Weldon Jones Gordon of Attalla, Ala.; caregivers, Ruby Tolney, Ellen Sams, Carolyn Rose and Gail Jennings. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 4, 2002, at Pinnacle United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Kristen B. Grant, the Rev. Bill Ragsdale and the Rev. Marsden Kitley. Interment will follow in the Pinnacle United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2002. Memorials may be made to the Pinnacle United Methodist Church cemetery Fund, c/o Jane Boles, P.O. Box 36, Pinnacle, NC 27043. The Boles family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.

CANADAY

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Bob D. Canaday, 66 of 1116 Greenhill Road, husband of Sylvia V. Canaday died unexpectedly on Friday, March 1, 2002. Mr. Canaday was born in Beckley, W.Va., March 19, 1935, the son of the late Kennis and Cleo Blevins Canaday. Mr. Canaday was associated with Scenic Motors of Mount Airy in its early years, was the original owner of Michael's Restaurant in Mount Airy, was a member of the Mount Airy Elk's Lodge for many years, was of the Baptist faith, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Sylvia V. Canaday of the home; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Amy and Scott Sawyers of Mount Airy, Cindy and Myron Vernon of Mount Airy; a stepson and his wife, Mike and Janet Chilton of Mount Airy; two children, Michael and Vickie Canaday; five stepgrandchildren; Josh Frye, Devin Sawyers, Hunter Vernon, Grayson Vernon and Courtney Chilton all of Mount Airy; a sister, Barbara Lynn Smith of Houston, Texas; special aunt and uncle, Jack and Cricket Canaday of Beckley, W.Va. Funeral services will be held Sunday March 3, 2002, at 4 p.m. at the Moody Funeral Chapel with the service conducted Dr. Wayne Hager and the Rev. Darren Slate with burial to follow in Skyline Memory Gardens. The Canadays will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Sunday. CARONE

Gerard Frank Carone, 69, of Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002. He was born to the late Gerard and Adele Gatto Carone on Oct. 23, 1932, in Bloomfield, N.J. Mr. Carone served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was retired from both Western Electric with over 20 years of service and from Johnston Controls/Globe Battery with over 15 years of service. He was a loving father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed. Along with his parents, a son, Gerard Carone III, preceded him in death. Surviving are three daughters, Joanne Carone of Winston-Salem, Catherine Carone of Jacksonville, Fla., and Deborah Carone Scota of Taylors, S.C.; two sons, Jay Carone and his wife Kelly of King and William Carone and his wife Lisa of Winston-Salem and seven grandchildren, Angelina Marie Carone, Benjamin Lee Taylor, Jonathan Carone, Jaymie Carone, Rebecca Carone, Jordan Carone and Anthony Carone. Also surviving are numerous other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 4, 2002, at the Knollwood Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. Dr. Christopher C.F. Chapman, Dr. Jack Noffsinger and the Rev. Daniel Salmon will officiate. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Vogler and Sons Main Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

MOUNT AIRY - Ralph Emerson Chandler Sr., 73, the husband of the late Clara Chandler Thomas, died Friday at Beverly Health Center in Galax, Va. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home Chapel.

DAVIS

Mrs. Melba Hemric Davis, 77, of Winston-Salem died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at RoseTara Plantation in King. She was born May 21, 1924, to William Henry Harrison and Nancy Jane Brooks Hemrick in Yadkin County. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and was retired from R.J. Reynolds with over 30 years service. Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband, Gwyn Ashley Davis and her parents. She is survived by a son, Phillip Michael Davis (Judy) and a daughter, Marsha D. Womack (Jim); a special nephew, Ivan Hemric (Bobbie); two grandchildren; four great grandchildren and numerous cousins. Funeral services will be held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel on Monday, March 4, 2002, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Paul Norman. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorials may be made to Macedonia Baptist Church, P.O. Box 341, Tobaccoville, NC 27050.
