William Woodley Foreman

Elizabeth City, NC - William Woodley “Woody” Foreman, 85, retired businessman, died Tuesday morning in Albemarle Hospital. Woody was born on February 12, 1917 in Elizabeth City, NC and was the son of the late Annie Woodley and James Wesley Foreman. He graduated from Elizabeth City High School, where he excelled in all sports; serving as captain of the baseball, basketball and football teams his senior year. He is often said to be the most outstanding all-around athlete to have attended Elizabeth City High School. Following high school, Woody continued his education and pursuit of sports at Augusta Military Academy, Duke University and Poughkeepsie Business College.

Woody married icon Dorothy Blair Thurman of Raleigh in 1941 and joined his father in the timber and livestock business. During World War II, he served in the U. S. Coast Guard, and thereafter operated Foreman Dairies Company.

He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church and a founding member of the Elizabeth City Golf Club. Woody was president of several organizations including Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City Rotary Club and United Way. In 1951, he received the Jaycees’ Distinguished Service Award and was recognized as a lifetime member of the College of the Albemarle Foundation.

Woody served as a member of the Board of Directors of numerous corporations including Southern Loan and Insurance, Atlantic Discount Corporation., First Union National Bank and Norfolk Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company.

Woody will be remembered for his sense of humor and wit, and his ever-present kindness and generosity. A caring father and devoted husband, Woody will be missed.

Woody is survived by his three children, William Woodley Foreman, Jr. of Kitty Hawk, NC, Allan Charles Foreman of Manteo, NC, and Blair Foreman Jackson of Elizabeth City, NC; eight grandchildren, Brooke and Shea Foreman of Kitty Hawk, NC; Philip, Charles and Stuart Foreman of Manteo, NC; Jenny and Kate Jackson of Elizabeth City, NC and John Jackson of Newport Beach, CA; and devoted friends, Caldonia Overton and Louise Thompson of Elizabeth City, NC.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Camilla Foreman Daniels and Marion Cook Foreman and two brothers, James Wesley Foreman, Jr. and Norton Blades Foreman.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, November 8, 2002 at Christ Episcopal Church where his ashes will be interred alongside his beloved wife. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Albemarle United Way or the charity of one’s choice.

William "Billie" Forehand

William “Billie” Forehand, age 90 of Shiloh, NC died Tuesday, April 29, 2003 at Maryview Hospital. He was born in Camden County, NC; son of the late William Gregory and Elizabeth Whitehurst Forehand and was the widower of Geneva Hughes Forehand. He was a retired independent insurance agent; a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and Hall Lodge # 53, a charter member of the South Camden Ruritan Club and the Camden Historical Society, Camden County Historian, a former chairman of the Camden Board of Elections, former member of the Camden County School Board, and served on the State Insurance Board.

Mr. Forehand is survived by a daughter, Billie Faye Beavers and her husband, Glen, of Shiloh, NC; a son, Brian Forehand, and his wife, Ann, of Shiloh, NC; two sisters, Elizabeth Hall of Newark, DE and Ellen Garner of Norfolk, VA; a brother, Winfred Forehand of Norfolk, VA; two grandchildren, Jackie Beavers of Spindale, NC and Thad Forehand of Statesville, NC; and two great grandchildren, Faith Beavers and Geneva Blair Forehand.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, May 2, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. Dave Combs officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 PM, immediately following the service at the church, and at other times at the residence of Brian Forehand, 104 Beech Tree Dr., Shiloh, NC. Winifred Tadlock Ford

Elizabeth City, NC - Winifred Tadlock Ford, age 74, of 1256 Northside Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at her residence, She was born in Santa Rosa, NM, daughter of the late John E. and Grace Puckett Tadlock and was the wife of Robert “Bob” Ford. She was a homemaker and a member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church.

Mrs. Ford is survived by one daughter, Roberta “Robbie” Louise Lewis and husband Billy of Elizabeth City, NC; one son Douglas Everett Ford and wife Judy of Chocowinity, NC; three sisters, Louise Copeland, Raleigh, NC, Wanda Largent of Tulsa OK and Betty Jo Turner of Frankfort KY; one grandchild, Phillip William Lewis.

Memorial service will be Saturday, April 26, 2003 at 11:00 am in Twiford Memorial Chapel with Johnny Ikner officiating. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home following the service. At other times the family will be at the residence located at 1256 Northside Road, Elizabeth City, NC.

Lathan Forbes, Sr.
Camden County Native

Lathan Forbes, Sr., age 72, of 158 Rivershore Dr., Hertford, NC, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Forbes, a native of Camden County, was the beloved husband for 55 years of Josephine Hodges Forbes of the residence and was the son of the late Dell Riggs and Addie Sawyer Forbes. He was a member and former deacon of the Elizabeth City Church of Christ.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Sue Lee of Elizabeth City, NC, and Patricia Oud of Sanford, NC; three sons, Lathan Forbes, Jr., of Pea Ridge, NC, Joseph James Forbes of Elizabeth City, NC, and Russell T. Forbes of Hertford, NC; two sisters, Delma Dail of Tyner, NC, and Lillie English of Shawboro, NC; one brother Isaac Forbes of Fredericksburg, VA; eleven grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Friday, July 18, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service and at other times at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Hazel Anderson, 106 S. Ashe St., Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Frank Forbes

Shiloh, NC - Frank Berry Forbes, age 66, of 157 S. Trotman Road, Shiloh, NC, died Sunday, June 20, 2004 in the Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Camden County, NC. He was the son of the late Jonathan Forbes and Ettie Summersett Mitchell. He was retired owner and operator of Forbes Texaco.

He is survived by a daughter, Debra Forbes Hassell and her husband Steve of Elizabeth City, NC; one son Glenn Allan Forbes and his wife Marsha of Elizabeth City, NC; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, June 24, 2004 at 11:00 AM in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence of his sister in law, Frances Forbes, 165 S. Trotman Road, Shiloh, NC. Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street is in charge of arrangements.

Lillian Owens Forbes
Retired LPN

Lillian Owens Forbes, age 90, at 206 Waterlily Road, Coinjock, NC, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Forbes, a native of Currituck County, was the widow of Charles Harold Forbes and the daughter of the late Alexander Owens and Grace Walker Owens. She was a retired LPN from the Albemarle Hospital and a member of Powell’s Point Baptist Church.

Mrs. Forbes is survived by three daughters, Mary Sue Floyd of Winnabow, NC, Carole F., and husband Bill Lewallen of Powell’s Point, NC, and Phyllis Forbes of Richmond, VA; four grandchildren; Glenn Floyd and wife Beth, Christopher David and wife Tawnee, Susan Floyd, and Will Lawallen, and two great grandchildren, Matt David and Hallie Floyd. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Hal Floyd.

Private services will be at a later date. The family will receive friends at the residence and request memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association, % Brenda Dial, PO Box 220, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, the Lower Currituck Rescue Squad, PO Box 486, Grandy, NC 27932 or the Currituck County Library, 4261 Caratoke Highway, Barco, NC 27917.

Dempsey Forbes

Dempsey Burnette “DB” Forbes, Sr., age 65, of 244 One Mill Road, Shiloh, NC, died Tuesday, January 27, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Forbes, a native of Camden County, was the husband of Betty Riggs Forbes of the residence and the son of Ruth Pierce Forbes of Shiloh, NC, and the late Dempsey Forbes. He was a retired electrician at the EC Coast Guard Base, a member and past master of Hall Lodge #53 AF&AM; , Indian Ridge Chapter #319 OES, the Elizabeth City York Rite Bodies, the Elizabeth City Shrine Club, the Sudan Shriners, and a member of I.B.E.W. Local Union # 733. He was a U. S. Air Force veteran.

Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by a daughter, Nena Williams of Gloucester, VA; a son, Dempsey Burnette Forbes, Jr., of Shiloh, NC; two sisters, Jeannette Riggs and Geraldine Overton, both of Shiloh, NC; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday, January 30, 2004, at 11:00am at Twiford Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery with Masonic Rites accorded by Hall Lodge #53 AF & AM. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30pm at the funeral home and at other times at their residence.

Lloyd Herman Flowers

Elizabeth City, NC - Lloyd Herman Flowers, age 89, of 106 Ranch Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, January 6, 2004, in Winslow Memorial Nursing Home. He was born in Wake County, NC, son of the late Lemuel Hardy Flowers and Minnie Deans Flowers. He was husband of Lucille Proctor Flowers of the residence. Mr. Flowers was Transportation Supervisor with the Pasquotank School System, and a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

Besides his wife, Mr. Flowers is survived by one daughter, Becky Scott and her husband, Joe, of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Howard Flowers and his wife Clarice, and Jimmy Flowers and his wife, Diane, all of Elizabeth City, NC; three sisters, Daisey Hobgood of Rocky Mount, NC; Ollie Mae Murphy and Pearl Overstreet, both of Wilson, NC; six grandchildren, Pam Flowers Edwards, James A. Flowers, Tammy Scott Chesson, Danny H. Flowers, Timmy Scott, and Jeffrey L. Flowers; nine great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be Friday, January 9, 2004, at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Roy Head officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, and at other time at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Scott, 106 Ranch Drive, Elizabeth City, NC. Elizabeth L. Fletcher

Elizabeth City, NC - Elizabeth Skiles Fletcher, age 85, of 1478 Weeksville Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003. She was a native of Pasquotank County, was the daughter of the late Robert C. and Cassie Toler Skiles, and widow of the late William B. Fletcher. She was a retired Sales Clerk with Belk Tyler Department Store, and a member of Riverside Baptist Church.

Mrs. Fletcher is survived by two daughters, Betty Russell of Burlington, NC, and Kay Fletcher of Winston-Salem, NC; three sons, William B. Fletcher, Jr. of San Antonia, TX, Bobby Fletcher of Elizabeth City, NC, David Fletcher of Kernersville, NC; two sisters, Evelyn Sawyer of Elizabeth City, NC, and June Taylor of Wilmington, NC; one brother, Norman Skiles of Charlotte, NC; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be Saturday, May 10, 2003, at 11:00 AM, at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. John B. Jones officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. At other times the family will be at the residence of Bobby Fletcher, 1153 Four Forks Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Allen Fink

Kill Devil Hills - Allen Quicksall Fink, 87, passed away Friday, September 26, 2003. A native of Philadelphia, PA, Mr. Fink resided in Williamsburg, VA, where he worked for 25 years before retiring from Colonial Williamsburg. In 1993, he moved with his wife to Kill Devil Hills, NC.

Mr. Fink was a naval veteran of WWII and a member of Duck United Methodist Church in Duck, NC. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, daughter, Sali Owen of Republic, WA and a brother, Harley Fink of Chester Springs, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested contributions be made to the “Isabele Relief Fund” for local communities (or other ministry of choice) through the Duck United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 8010, Duck Station, NC 27949. A private memorial service for immediate family will be held in Pennsylvania.

Albert Ficik

Colington Harbour, NC - Albert “Al” John Ficik, 71, died on Friday, December 5, 2003 at an Elizabeth City hospital. Mr. Ficik was born in Bayonne, NJ and was a retired Commercial Electrician. He was a member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and the Colington Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Ficik was a Veteran having served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was the son of the late John and Mary Gnip Ficik and the husband of the late Gwennessa Waibel Ficik.

He is survived by two sons; Carl Ficik of Albuquerque, NM and Allan Ficik of Sleepy Hollow, NY; two sisters, Mary Cauwels of Fairlawn, NJ and Helen Rogow of Emerson, NJ; two brothers, John Ficik of Toms River, NJ and Robert Ficik of Colington Harbour, NC; he was preceded in death by one daughter, Chrissie.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2003 at the Colington United Methodist Church at 10:30 AM with the Rev. Robert Pitsch officiating. A reception for the family will be held at the church following the service. The Cremains will be buried in the George Washington Cemetery in Paramus, NJ. The family will be at the home of his brother, Robert Ficik, 234 Roanoke Drive, Kill Devil Hills, NC.

Thomas Fetty, Jr.

Thomas Carl Fetty, Jr., 49, a resident of Nags Head, NC, for 30 years, died. He was born in Fairmont, WV to the late Grace Fern Eby Sullivan. He is survived by his godfather Joseph Patrick Murphy and his godmother Marie Mary Murphy.

Tom Fetty is also survived by four sisters, Sharon Kyer of Fairmont, WV, Theresa Marie Berry of Mt. Clare, WV, Pamela Ann Hammond of Tega Cay, SC, and Cynthia Marie Murphy of Virginia Beach, VA; and two brothers, Patrick Joseph Murphy of Norfolk, VA and Michael John Murphy of Cork, Ireland.

A memorial service will be conducted by the family on Friday, January 2, 2004 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Leon Holmes Ferrell

Elizabeth City, NC - Mr. Leon Holmes Ferrell, age 71, of 2203 West Main Street Extended, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Ferrell was born in Pasquotank County, NC, the son of the late William Percy Ferrell, Sr., and Minnie Russell Ferrell. He was a retired truck driver with Dominion Freight Lines and veteran of the U.S. Navy, and a life time member of the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060.

Mr. Ferrell is survived by one sister, Yvonne F. Sawyer of Hertford, NC, and a special companion, Joan Darden; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by three brothers, William Percy Ferrell, Jr., William Russell and Wallace Russell.

Graveside service will be Saturday, May 17, 2003 at 11:00 AM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Faye B. Rouse officiating. Military Rites will be performed by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060. The family will receive friends Friday evening 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the Pasquotank Camden Rescue Squad or to the Woodland United Methodist Church.

William Thomas Ferrell

Kinston, NC - William Thomas Ferrell, age 52, of Kinston, NC, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003. He was a native of Pasquotank, NC, and was son of the late, Clarence Joshua and Marie Alderson Ferrell.

Mr. Ferrell is survived by five brothers, Charles Ferrell of Elizabeth City, NC, Carl Caudel Ferrell of League City, TX, Clarence Edward Ferrell of Hertford, NC, Robert David Ferrell of Weeksville, NC, and Donald Wayne Ferrell of Hertford, NC.

Funeral service will be Saturday, March 29, 2003, in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Reggie Parker officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will be at the residence, 285 Old US 17 South, Hertford, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

MR1 Scott R. Ferguson

CHESAPEAKE, –MR1 Scott R. Ferguson, 39, passed away suddenly Friday, June 4th, 2004. He was a devoted husband, father, and son. Scott had served aboard the USS La Salle, USS Holland, USS Wisconsin, USS Shenendoah, USS Ross, and USS Ponce. He was surface and air warfare qualified and served for nearly 20 years.

He is survived by his maternal grandmother Peggy Dowd; his father Kit Ralph Ferguson; mother Geraldine Ferguson; his loving wife of 18 years Teresa L. Ferguson; daughters Suzanne, Danielle; sons Scott Jr., Dennis; sister Stacy Durfee; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

The family will receive friends at the Church of the Ascension Catholic Church, 4853 Princess Anne Rd in Virginia Beach on Tuesday, June 8th from 6 PM to 7 PM with a mass of the resurrection to follow at 7:30 PM with the Father James E. Park officiating.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens 6309 E Virginia Beach Blvd, on Wednesday, June 9th, at 2 PM.

Ruby N. Ferebee

Ruby Pugh Neece Ferebee, age 96, of 701 Wareham Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died at Albemarle Hospital on Saturday, November 15, 2003. Born in Randolph County, NC, one of 15 children she was the daughter of the late George Wesley and Bessie Provost Pugh, and was the widow of the late Hobert Neece and S. Scott Ferebee. Mrs. Ferebee was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Ladies Bible Class, United Methodist Women, Elizabeth City Music Club, Garden Club, Hospital Auxiliary, and the Senior Women’s Club.

Mrs. Ferebee is survived by: three daughters, Carolyn N. “Snooky” Dawson of Elizabeth City, NC, Barbara Neece and husband Steve Waters of Morehead City NC, and Becky Neece of Elizabeth City, NC; four sisters, Kathleen Allen of Charlotte, NC, Juanita Strader of Camden, SC, Joyce Pates of Bethesda, MD, and Frances Shoffner, of Liberty, NC; two brothers Bruce Pugh, and Herbert Pugh, both of Franklinville, NC; three grandchildren, Renee Dawson of Kill Devil Hills NC, Casey Waters of Myrtle Beach SC, Dr. and Mrs. Tracy Waters of Raleigh NC, two great grandchildren numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service in the lobby of the funeral home and all other times at 701 Wareham St. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the First United Methodist Church Organ Fund or to the Building Fund. Maybell F. Ferebee

Maybell Flora Ferebee, 85, of Pudding Ridge Road, Moyock, NC died Tuesday, July 01, 2003, in the Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Moyock, NC to the late Richard Bell and May Payne Flora. Mrs. Ferebee was a member of the Moyock United Methodist Church, UMW, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Coinjock Chapter #218 and former member of the Moyock Woman’s Club.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, July 3, 2003, at 11:00am in the Moyock Memorial Cemetery with Eastern Star Rites. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford’s Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC, Wednesday evening from 7:00 until 8:00pm and at other times at the home of Mrs. Phyllis Mays, 223 Survey Road, Moyock, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City is in charge of arrangements.

Marian Felick

Kill Devil Hills, NC - Marian Korta Felick, 76, of 310 Pine Grove Trail, Kill Devil Hills, NC, died Friday, March 26, 2004 in Virginia Beach, VA. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Edward and Florence Downs Korta and was the wife of Robert E. Felick of the home. She was a homemaker, a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, and an avid gardener.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Felick is survived by a daughter, Elaine Robey and husband Jack of Kill Devil Hills, NC; a grandson, Justin Robey of Kill Devil Hills, NC; a sister, Jean Bardyn of Pittsburgh, PA; two brothers, George Korta of Pittsburgh, PA and Ed Korta of California; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at 10:00 AM at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church by Father Bill Walsh. Burial will be at Laurel Memorial Gardens, Poplar Branch, NC. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, NC on Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.
