Bobby Cardwell
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Bobby Reid Cardwell, 68, of 278 Benton Road, in the Ruffin community died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at his residence after seven years of declining health. He was in critical condition for three weeks.
Born March 27, 1931, in Reidsville, he was the son of Frank J. Cardwell and Annie Hall Cardwell.
He was married
to Billie Laws Cardwell, who survives.
He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He spent most of his life in Danville and Ruffin, community in North Carolina. He was a retired electrician and of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Royce Reid Cardwell, Allen Wayne Cardwell and Frankie Dale Cardwell, all of Danville; one brother, Frank J. Cardwell Jr. of Puyallup, Wash.; four sisters, Joann Cardwell, Betty C. Cook and Bonnie C. Pruitt, all of Reidsville; Jennie C. Littlejohn of Huntsville, Ala.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Bland Leebrick Jr., officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the residence of his son, Allen W. Cardwell, 750 Glendale Ave. Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Wade Turner Sr.
ROXBORO, N.C. - Wade Thomas Turner Sr., 75, of 1273 Pointer St., formerly of Danville, died early Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at Person County Memorial Hospital in Roxboro.
Born Nov. 16, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, Whitt community, he was the son of the late Harold Turner and Mamie Shields Turner.
He was married
to Margaret Castleberry Turner who died May 1, 1997.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II. He spent most of his life in the Danville area and attended the First Christian Church. He drove for Trailway Bus Company for 20 years before he worked for Dan River Inc. where he retired as supervisor after many years of service.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen Scearce of Danville and Margaret Pulliam of Roxboro; one son, Wade Thomas Turner Jr. of Roxboro; and two brothers, James Robert Turner of Tampa, Fla., and John Turner of Danville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 1097.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday evening at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of one of his daughters, Karen Scearce, 3141 Moorefield Bridge Road.
John Daniel
MADISON, N.C. - John Oliver Daniel, 82, of 2990 Highway 772, died Saturday Oct. 9, 1999, at his residence.
Born in Rockingham County, he was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Ruritan Club for 38 years.
A World War II Army veteran of five years, he was also a retired manager and agent of Peoples Life Insurance Company.
He was married
to Sarah Hazelwood Daniel, who survives, for 52 years.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, John Oliver Daniel Jr. of Portland, Ore. and Kim Shelton Daniel of Eden; three brothers, Bob Daniel of Hampton, Va., Sherman Daniel of Sanford and Grey Daniel of Washington; four sisters, Doris D. Coe, Faye D. Garner and Pat D. Kirby, all of Sanford and Edith D. Slawson of Concord; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethesda United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Colonial Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Roger Meeks
PELHAM, N.C. - Roger Hunt Meeks, 67, of 354 Lovelace Road, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
Born April 6, 1932, in Rockingham County, he was the son of the late Numa Meeks and Lelia Meeks Meeks.
He was married
to Nancy Hanks Meeks, who survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He spent most of his life in the Pelham community of Caswell County, where he was a member of Pelham United Methodist Church.
He traveled extensively for his job at International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, where he worked as an electrician before retiring six years ago.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Roger Lynn Meeks of Pelham; one daughter, Rhonda Meeks Barlow of Hillsborough; five brothers, Len Meeks of Bridge City, Texas, Charles Meeks of Yanceyville, Raymond Meeks of Newport News, Va. and Marion Meeks and Gary Meeks, both of Pelham; three sisters, Nellie Strader of Pelham, Gloria Bray of Yanceyville and Martha Foster of Ruffin; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pelham United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert E. Fritts officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery where military honors will be performed by the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Armond Tate
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Armond Malloy Tate, 64, of 206 Moorefield Road, died Friday Oct. 8, 1999, at his residence.
Born Oct. 5, 1935, in Caswell County, he was the son of Carey Tate and Florence Wimple Tate.
He was employed by Dan River Inc. for many years prior to his retirement.
He was married
to Ollie Pearl Patterson Tate, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Delores Tate of Danville, Va. and one brother, David Lee Tate of Yanceyville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m Tuesday at Blackwell Baptist Church with the Rev. Everett Dickerson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Roberta Sydnor
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Roberta Hughes Sydnor, 53, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at University of North Carolina Hospital, Chapel Hill.
Born Sept. 7, 1946, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Lorenza Hughes Sr. and Mattie Sue C. Hughes.
She was a member of White Rock Baptist Church and a textile worker with Field Crest Mills in Eden.
Survivors include one brother, Lorenza Hughes Jr. of Danville, Va. and one step-brother Shawn Hughes of Ramsurier.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at White Rock Baptist Church with the Rev. Walter Tinsley officiating.
Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
A viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Lorenza Hughes, 436 Norwood Drive.
Hosie Massey
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Hosie Massey, 82, of 1086 North Main Street in Yanceyville, N.C. died Saturday, Nov. 6 at the Brian Center.
Born Aug. 12, 1917 in Caswell County, a son of the late Allen Massey and the late Charity Massey.
He was a retired farmer and was employed at L.P. Anderson Construction Company for a number of years. He was married
to Annie Lee Norma Massey, who predeceased him. He was later married
to the former Barbara Lipford Massey, who survives.
He is survived by 13 sons, Hosie Massey, Jr. of South Boston, Willie Green Massey of Providence, Milton C. Massey of Elon College, Allen Lee Massey of Woodbridge, Joe Massey Sr., Enosh Cris Massey, Raymond Massey and Donald L. Massey, all of Danville, Lester G. Massey of Washington, Levi Massey, Benny Wade Massey and Anthony Massey, all of Maryland, James Lewis Massey of Yanceyville; five daughters, Abbie Ruth Massey of Pelham, Diane Massey Jones of Temple Hills, MD, Carolyn M. Browning of High Point, Gwendolyn Massey Lea and Judy R. Massey, both of Danville and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by eight children.
The family will receive friends at the home of his son, James Massey, 583 Main St., Old Farm Apt. 6D, Yanceyville.
Funeral services for Mr. Massey will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999 at 1 p.m. from the Ebenezer Baptist Church Providence. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Ola Mae Pettiford
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Ola Mae Gunn Pettiford, 41, of Willis Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born August 23, 1958, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Oliver Gunn and Margaret Hankins Gunn.
She was a member of Hamer Missionary Baptist Church in Blanch and was an employee of Inject Tronics in Burlington, as a machine operator.
Survivors include two sons, Sir Rufus Pettiford and Adrian Gwynn, both of Yanceyville; two daughters, Sherry Pettiford and Tamara Gwynn, both of Yanceyville; three brothers, Ronel Gunn of Boston, Willie Edmonds Jr. of Pittsburgh, and Earnest Gunn of Florida; four sisters, Frances Chalmers of Boston, Irene Jefferies of Danville, Va., Mattie Gunn of Yanceyville, and Margret Gunn of Cedar Grove; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Wayne Antonio Gunn on Sept. 30, 1999, and one brother, Robert Earl Gunn, on Aug. 12, 1999.
A funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Hamer Baptist Church with the Elder Squire Pettiford officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Fulton Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her sister, Mattie Gunn, 291 Church St., Yanceyville.
Almeada Light
PELHAM, N.C. - Almeada B. Light, 92, of 640 Sunset Road died Nov. 12, 1999 at Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville.
Light was born Jan. 6, 1907 in Bristol, Va., the daughter of Epson Bowman and Minnie Stature Bownman. She was married
to Bura Harvey Light, who preceded her in death.
Light was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church.
Light is survived by two daughters, Dorothy L. Knight of Reidsville, and Janet L. Morris of Garner, one son, Larry W. Light of Pelham, three brothers, Rowland Bowman, Carl Bowman and Clarence Bowman, all of Bristol, Va., one sister, Lula Bowman of Bristol, Va., 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Light was predeceased by two sisters, Lillia Worley and Dola Bowman, and two brothers, Jack Bowman and James Bowman.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Michael J. Kent Sr. will conduct the service.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence of granddaughter Tonya Myers, 1059 Lovelace Road, Pelham.
