Pauline Williams
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. —Pauline Lavinder Williams, 86, formerly of 1503 Clairmont Ave., Richmond, Va., died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after being a resident at the Brian Center for the past five years.
Born April 26, 1915, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Edgar Howell Lavinder and Roxanna Presnell Lavinder.
She was married
to Willard B. Williams, who predeceased her Aug. 15, 1958. She lived in Danville, Va. before moving to Richmod, Va. in 1958, where she lived for many years before returning to this area. She worked for the Crippled Children’s Hospital in Richmond, Va. as a nurse’s assistant and was a member of the former Sledd Memorial United Methodist Church in Danville, Va.
Survivors include one sister, Elsie Jones of Danville, Va.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by four brothers, John M. Lavinder, Leonard H. Lavinder, Samuel F. Lavinder and Earl H. Lavinder.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Mountain View Cemetery with the Rev. Roger Ewing officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Elsie Jones, 735 Arlington Road.
The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Roanoke/Salem Chapter, P.O. Box 5014, Roanoke, VA 24012.

James Barnette
SEMORA, N.C. — James Harvey Barnette, 75, of 4676 Cunningham Road, died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at the Veteran Hospital of Durham, N.C.
Born July 12, 1925, he was the son of Gabriel and Susie Barnette.
He was married
to Queen Barnette, who predeceased him. He was a native of Person County and attended Person County Public Schools.
Survivors include five daughters, Sylvia Ann Butner and Courtney Lipscomb, both of South Boston, Va., Brenda Johnson and Arcellia Hall, both of Washington, D.C. and Regina Freeman of Colorado; five sons, James Barnette of Newark, N.J., Silas and Lionel Barnette, both of South Boston, Va., Michael and Franklin Johnson, both of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Ernestine Royster of the residence, Josephine Benson of Semora and Betsy Burton of Roxboro; six brothers, Chester Barnette of Semora, George, Walter, and Raymond Barnette, all of East Orange, N.J., Franklin Barnette of Newark, N.J. and Willie Barnette of Long Beach, Calif.; 25 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Old Mount Zion Baptist Church in Roxboro with the Rev. Marcus Vann officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
Viewing will be held 12-8 p.m. at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel in Semora.

Harriet Hardy
GREENSBORO, N.C. —Harriet Smith Ward Hardy died Tuesday, May 22, 2001 in Greensboro, North Carolina. She was born February 23, 1930 in Danville, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Charles Jeffreys Smith and Lula Daly Smith. She was educated in the Danville schools and graduated from Wake Forest College in 1951. At Wake Forest, she served as President of the Women’s Government Council, on the Honor Council, and was named Who’s Who Among American University Students.
On graduation from Wake Forest, she was employed by the Kannapolis, North Carolina City Schools. Over a period of years she taught English at A.L. Brown High School. She was married
to the late Raymond L. Ward, an executive with Cannon Mills, from 1952 until his death in 1986.
Mrs. Hardy was the founder of the Friends of the Cabarrus-Kannapolis Library, which led to the establishment of a new public library for Kannapolis. For her efforts, she was named Woman of the Year for 1983 by the Daily Independent newspaper. She served as a member of the first Board of Adjustments of Cabarrus County. In 1985, she was licensed as a real estate broker, a profession she enjoyed until 1991 when she married
attorney John W. Hardy and moved to Greensboro. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women of Trinity United Methodist Church and acted in productions of Cabarrus County’s Old Courthouse Theater. She was a member of the Historical Book Club of North Carolina and served on the Board of Trustees of the Greensboro Historical Museum.
She was preceded in death by a son, Raymond Lee Ward, Jr. She is survived by her husband, John Hardy of Greensboro; son S. Daly Ward and wife Emily of Sumter, SC; daughter Suzanne Ward Dusch and husband Frank of Asheville, NC; stepsons John Hardy, Jr. and wife Christy; Jim Hardy and wife Colleen; and Richard Hardy and wife Ginger, all of Greensboro; and fourteen grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 24th, between 7:00 and 8:30 pm at Forbis & Dick Funeral Services, 1118 North Elm Street, Greensboro. A private graveside service will be held at 1:00 at Carolina Memorial Park followed by a memorial service at Trinity United Methodist Church on East First Street in Kannapolis at 2:00. Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of the Cabarrus-Kannapolis Library, 850 Mountain Street, Kannapolis, NC, or to the Greensboro Historical Museum, 130 Summit, Ave., Greensboro, NC 27401.
Lane Myers
MILTON, N.C. — Lane Douglas Myers was born and died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, following complications from open heart surgery at Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
He was the son of Darrell and Beverly Myers, who survive.
Survivors, in addition to his parents of Milton, include one brother, Daniel Myers of the residence; paternal grandparents, Edward and Ethel Myers of Danville, Va.; paternal great-grandmother, Estelle Cassidy of Sandy Level; maternal grandparents, Howard and Sandra Chilton of Blanch and maternal great-grandmother, Doris Chilton of Blanch.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Community Baptist Church cemetery in Yanceyville, with Pastor Mark Smith and Pastor Keith Bowling officiating.

John Newnam
PELHAM, N.C. — John Walter Newnam, 91, of 6009 Old U.S. 29, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at the residence after two years of declining health.
Born Sept. 5, 1909, in Richmond, he was the son of John Edgar Newnam and Beulah Glass Newnam.
He was married
to Virginia Blanche Allgood Newnam, who survives. He lived most of his life in Pelham where he was a retired farmer and member of Whippoorwill Forrest Church of Christ and the Pelham Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one daughter, Shirley Newnam Sartin of Ruffin; two sons, John Walter Newnam Jr. of Cary and David Thomas Newnam of Pelham; two sisters, Susie White of Ruffin and Bluma Pryor of Pelham; two brothers, George E. Newnam of Brandon, Fla. and Gaither Newnam of Martinsville, Va.; ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Theron Hall and the Rev. Grady Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Elnora Pickeral
PROVIDENCE, N.C. — Elnora Harriet Worley Pickeral, 75, of 483 Park Springs Lake Road, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Brian Center in Yanceyville.
Born July 25, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of Dock Crispen Worley and Nettie Frances Shelton Worley.
She was married
Dec. 21, 1946, to Alvin Pickeral, who survives. She lived in Pittsylvania County, Va., before moving to the Park Springs community in 1948. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include three sons, Roger Lee Pickeral of Providence, Dennis Edwin Pickeral of Hampton, Va. and Timothy Paul Pickeral of Spartenburg, S.C.; two brothers, Calvin Worley of Kernsville and Jack Ramsey Worley of Carlise, Pa.; four sisters, Myrtle W. Davis, Virginia Mae W. Doss and Nancy W. Bryant, all of Gretna, Va. and Joyce Marie W. Brevins of Carlise, Pa. and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by one son, Alvin Ramsey Pickeral.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Avery Marshall and the Rev. Mark Moore officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence of her son, 216 Parks Spring Lake Road in Providence.

Elsie Setliff
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Elsie Garner Setliff, 95, formerly of 2601 Immanuel Road, died May 27, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital.
Born Sept. 10, 1905, in Birmingham, Ala., she was the daughter of Elizabeth and Cooper Garner.
She was married
in 1946 to George W. Setliff, who predeceased her Aug. 13, 1972. She had been a resident of Alterra Health Care Center until she entered the hospital May 23, 2001. She was employed at Wesley Long Hospital and after her retirement, worked for Chick-Fil-A.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one half-sister.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va. with the Rev. Robert Simmons officiating.

Helen Worth
BLANCH, N.C. — Mrs. Helen Dozier Worth of 983 Files Rd. Blance, NC, died Sunday, May 20, 2001 in the Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville, VA, after an extended illness.
She was a native of Nash County, NC the daughter of the late Douglas Jones and Johnann Jones, born September 12, 1927.
She was a graduate of Bennett College in Greensboro, NC where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in education and later taught school at High Rock Elem. School in Blanch, NC before retirement.
She was a former member of Loyal Baptist Church in Danville, VA where she was a member of the Senior Choir, the Georgia Bennett Missionary Circle and the Pastors Aid Society, later, she joined River Zion Baptist Church in Blanch, NC.
Mrs. Helen Dozier Worth was also a member of the Sunshine Club in Burlington and the Senior Citizen Club in Yanceyville, NC.
Her survivors are 1 uncle, Mr. Eddie Dozier of Washington, DC; 1 foster sister, Mrs. Mable Copeland of Blanch, NC; and a host of many dear relatives and friends in Yanceyville, NC, Burlington, NC and Rocky Mt., NC.
Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Dozier Worth will be conducted Wednesday, May 23, 2001 2:00 PM at River Zion Baptist Church in Blanch, NC. with burial in the church cemetery; Rev. S. Thornton, officiating. The body may be viewed Tuesday evening from 2 to 8 PM at Fulton Funeral Chapel.

Geraldine Baize
EDEN, N.C. — Geraldine Stamps Baize of 5924 Highway 700, died Wednesday May 30, 2001 at 2401 Southwick Drive, Greensboro.
Born in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the Aldean Stamps and Lovelean Williams Stamps. She was married
to Aaron Larnell Baize Sr.
She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Ringgold. She was president of the 700 Flower Club and a member of the Senior Citizens. She retired from Fieldcrest Mills after 25 years of employment. For 55 years she was the musician for the Bluestone Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her mother and husband, include one son, Aaron Larnell Baize Jr. of Eden; three daughters, Edith Stamps Chance and Delcine Baize both of Greensboro, Janice King of Reidsville, and seven grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her father, by a daughter, Linda B. Richardson.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Howard L. Graves Sr. officiating. Interment will follow at Greenview Cemetery, Reidsville, N.C.

Betty Bray
EDEN, N.C. — Betty Curry Bray, 64, of 1090 Virginia St., died Monday, June 4, 2001, at the residence.
Born in Rockingham County, she was married
to Robert Bray, who survives. She worked for Fieldcrest before her retirement.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include one son, Darrin Rodgers of Eden; one daughter, Reva Wilson of Cascade and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Promise Baptist Church in Ruffin. Interment will follow at Ridgeview Memorial Gardens.
