Alfred E. Long
RALEIGH – The funeral for Alfred Eugene Long, 73, of 3105 Brentwood Rd., who died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at his home, was conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 3, in Raleigh Memorial Park Mausoleum. Burial was in Raleigh Memorial Park.
Mr. Long was a native of Person County, the son of the late John Allen and Nannie Russell Long. His late wife was Betty Jane Wells Long.
He was a retired farmer and press operator with the News & Observer of Raleigh.
Surviving are three brothers, Jack Louis Long, Tennie L. Long and Billy Long, all of Roxboro; three sisters, Nannie Bette Hatcher, Sterling Harris and Hazel Long, all of Roxboro.
Willie C. Adcock
OXFORD – The funeral for Willie Carver Adcock, 96, of U.S. 158-West, Rougemont, who died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at Oxford Manor, will be conducted at 11 a.m., today, Feb. 12, in Mt. Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Keith Williams. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Adcock was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late John W. and Sarah Brooks Carver. Her late husband was Herman E. Adcock. A late son was Wayne Adcock.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Clessie G. Adcock of Rougemont; a grandson, Ronald W. Adcock of Rougemont; a granddaughter, Lisa A. Buie of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two great-grandchildren, Erin and Reagan Buie, both of Myrtle Beach.

Margaret C. Ashley
The funeral for Margaret Louise Carver Ashley, 75, of 786 Dink Ashley Rd., Timberlake, who died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, will be conducted at 2 p.m., today, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. David Chambers and the Rev. Bob Baynard. Burial will be in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Ashley was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late George Norman Carver and Lillian Bessie Blackstock.
She was retired from Tultex Corp.
She attended Antioch Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Jessie William (Dub) Ashley; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Tim Ashley, William Whitfield, Glenn Owen, Brad Carver, Chris Nunn and Randy Ashley.

William N. Blackwell
ROUGEMONT – The funeral for William (Bill) Nelson Blackwell Jr., 40, of 2315 Red Mountain Rd., Rougemont, who died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at his home, was conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11, in New Bethel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Para R. Drake. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Blackwell was a native of Durham County, the son of William (Nelson) Blackwell of Rougemont, who survives, and the late Doris McKenzie Blackwell.
He was an employee of Russell Gutter Company with 13 years of service.
Surviving in addition to his father are, his wife, Karen Russell Blackwell; three sons, William (Snapper) Nelson Blackwell III of Durham, Ryan Edward Blackwell and Russell Arthur Blackwell, both of the home; two brothers, Jerry W. Blackwell of Rougemont and Randy A. Blackwell of Creedmoor; three sisters, Mary M. Glosson of Bullock, Bonnie B. Duke of Bahama and Elizabeth (Sue) Williford of Creedmoor.
Pallbearers were Randy Russell, Gray Russell, Donald Russell, Wayne Jacobs, Keith Chamberlain and John Westmoreland.

Athna O. Carver
The funeral for Athna (Billie) Oakley Carver, 70, of Chub Lake Loop Rd., who died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at Duke University Medical Center, will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 13, in Theresa Baptist Church by the Rev. Herbert Brown. Burial will be in Oak Grove United Methodist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Oakley was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Carroll Oakley and Minnie Bowling Oakley Reaves.
She owned and operated Athna Carver’s Day Care for 15 years.
She was a former member of Theresa Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Osie B. Carver; her step-father, Johnnie Reaves of Roxboro; two sons, Nelson Carver of Roxboro and Timothy Carver of Bunn; three daughters, Ann Buchanan, Faye Clayton and Dale Lemaire, all of Roxboro; a half-brother, Joe Oakley of Mechanicsville, Va.; a half-sister, Mary Frances Ennis of Raleigh; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Andy Clayton, Joshua Clayton, Daniel Roberson, Robbie Lemaire, Christopher Carver, Gene Oakley, Jeremiah Solomon and Michael Day.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., today, Feb. 12, at Theresa Baptist Church.

Albert D. Day
The funeral for Albert Demerritt Day, 78, of 203 Webb St., who died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 11 a.m., today, Feb. 12, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Herbert Brown and the Rev. Donald Harris. Burial will be in Providence Cemetery.
Mr. Day was a native of Johnston County, the son of the late Herbert Clifton and Ollie Chambers Day.
He was the owner and operator of Big Al’s Tastee Freeze for 46 years.
He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Guill Day; two sons, Frankie Day and Alfred Day Jr., both of Roxboro; two daughters, Vickie Day Weaver of Roxboro and Kay Day Ward of Southport; three sisters, Frances Trickey of Roxboro, Elizabeth Hayes of Shelburn, Ind. and Eva Walker of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren, Maria Huffman, Michael Day, Wayne Day and Angela Day; and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Tony Dawkins, Ronald Harris, Tim Crutchfield, Curtis Michael, Bailey Griffin and Robert Trickey.
Thomas Elliott
VIRGILINA, Va. – The funeral for Thomas (Tom) Elliott, 70, of 1048 Hogan Rd., Virgilina, Va., who died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at Halifax Regional Hospital, was conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 9, at McGhee’s Mill Baptist Church by the Rev. Frankie Reaves and the Rev. Jack Stewart. Burial was in Aarons Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Elliott was a native of Halifax County, Va., the son of the late Henry Anderson and Annie Laura Hogan Elliott Hall.
He was a construction worker, retired from H.A. Nunn Construction Co.
He was a retired farmer.
He was a member of Aarons Creek Baptist Church and attended McGhee’s Mill Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Katherine Pruitt Elliott; six daughters, Glenda Elliott of South Boston, Va.; Carol Elliott, Amy Elliott, and Sarah E. Ingram, all of Virgilina, Arlene E. Campbell of Roxboro and Wilma E. Vaughan of Chatham, Va.; two sons, Fred Elliott of Alton, Va. and Michael Elliott of South Boston; two sisters, Janie Keeton and Marion Davis, both of Buffalo Junction, Va.; two brothers, John Elliott of Halifax and Henry (Peewee) Elliott of Cluster Springs, Va.; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and a step great-grandchild.
Maggie A. Hood
MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Maggie Lee Arrington Hood, 90, of 1508 Rivermount Heights, Martinsville, Va. ,died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Martinsville Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Hood was a native of Bassett, Va., the daughter of the late Louis and Fannie Altize Arrington. Her late husbands were Zack Brookshire and Alfred Green Hood.
She was a former employee of Fieldcrest Mills in Fieldale, Va.
She was a member of Ridgeway Church of God.
Surviving are a daughter, Betty Kretszhman of Martinsville; a son, Bobby Joe Brookshire of Portsmouth, R.I.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were by Swicegood Funeral Home.
Willie E. Jay
The funeral for Willie Earl (Hempsie) Jay, 82, who died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Person Memorial Hospital, was conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11, in Old Mt. Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Marcus Vann and the Rev. Garland Ragland. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Jay was a native of Person County.
He was a member of Old Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Beunia Jay of Philadelphia, Pa. and Penroe Crawley of Semora; and a brother, Lee Davis Jay of Baltimore, Md.

Ezra L. Kidd
The funeral for Ezra Landon Kidd, 67, formerly of 51 Reuben Allen Rd., who died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, in Person Memorial Hospital following an extended illness, was conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 9, in Strickland Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Betty Hale. Burial was in Mt. Harmony Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Kidd was a native of Person County, the son of the late Gardner Oliver and Evelyn Peed Kidd.
He was retired from Collins & Aikman Corp.
Surviving are a sister-in-law, Florence O. Kidd of Roxboro; a nephew, Nolan Kidd of Roxboro and a niece, Laura Ann K. Howard of Durham.
Pallbearers were Bryan Clayton, William Ed Clayton, James Fogleman, Billy Kidd, Selby Kidd, Howard Martin, Lindsey Peed and Ted Peed.

Elger L. Latta
The funeral for Elger Lee Latta, 64, of 131 Peed Rd., Rougemont, who died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at his home following an extended illness, will be conducted at 11 a.m., today, Feb. 12, in Mt. Harmony Baptist Church by the Rev. Wendell Stokes and the Rev. George Harris. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Latta was a native of Person County, the son of the late Willie Lee and Belia Jane Allen Latta.
He was a retired tobacco farmer.
He was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Bobbie Jean Howell Latta; two sons, Barney Lee Latta and Charles Dale Latta, both of Rougemont; a sister, Juanita L. Laws of Rougemont; and three grandchildren, Kristi L. Chambers, Christopher Lee Latta and Brandon Dale Latta, all of Rougemont.
Pallbearers will be Leamond Latta, Wayne Latta, Larry Mooney, Ryan Mooney, Roger Whitt and Doyle Whitt.

Ben W. Loftis
The funeral for Ben William Loftis, 69, of 552 Long Store Rd., who died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at Veteran Administration Hospital in Durham, was conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11, in McGhee’s Mill Baptist Church by the Rev. Frankie Reaves. Burial was in Old Lea Bethel Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Loftis was a native of Caswell County, the son of the late Charles Henry and Izona Parker Loftis.
He was retired from Collins & Aikman Corp.
He was a tobacco farmer.
He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
He was a member of McGhee’s Mill Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Joyce Marie Blalock Loftis; two sons, Gregory Dale Loftis and Benjie Loftis, both of Roxboro; two daughters, Kathy Taylor of Mt. Airy and Sheri Clark of Munith, Mich.; a brother, Jimmy Loftis of Roxboro; two sisters, Hazel L. Durham of Burlington and Mamie L. Monk of Roxboro; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Steve Reaves, Bobby Barwick, Charles (Chris) Neale, Steve Whitt, Ryan Shytle and Randy Whitt. Honorary pallbearers were William Long, Ronnie Long, Buddy Huff, Lee Mahaley, Billy Wade and Rodney Thompson.

Patricia W. Mundy
The funeral for Patricia Ann Wilborn Mundy, 67, of 205 John St., who died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at Duke University Medical Center following a brief illness, will be conducted at 2 p.m., today, Feb. 12, in Strickland Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Deirdre Britt. Burial will be in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Mundy was a native of Person County, the daughter of Pansy Viola Stephen Wilborn, who survives, and the late Walter Robert Wilborn. Her late husband was James Gilbert Mundy.
She was retired from Collins & Aikman Corp.
She was a member of Longhurst United Methodist Church.
Surviving in addition to her mother are two daughters, Robyn M. Gentry and Wendy M. Rosenberry, both of Roxboro; four sisters, Naomi W. Robertson, Mussette W. Day and Brenda W. Lenard, all of Roxboro and Eleanor W. Pritchard of Weirton, W. Va.; two brothers, Bob Wilborn and Timmy Wilborn, both of Roxboro; and a granddaughter, Candace Gentry of Roxboro.
Pallbearers will be Donald Bowes, Craig Day, David Gentry, Jonathan Long, Ronnie Roberson, Walt Rosenberry, Wesley Stone and Gary Vickers. Gordon James, Howard Pritchard and Dallas Snow will be honorary pallbearers.
