PHILLIP HODGES PITTMAN
SCOTLAND NECK -- Phillip Hodges Pittman, 77, of Greensboro, formerly of Scotland Neck, and Murfreesboro, died January 9, 1999.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 11, at Trinity Episcopal Cemetery, Scotland Neck, with Reverend Lee Powell officiating.
Mr. Pittman is survived by his wife, Nellie Blanche Stanford Pittman of the home; one daughter, Patricia Pittman Lauridson of Menlo Park, California; one son, Jim Stanford Pittman of Chapel Hill; three brothers, David L. and Asa Gene Pittman of Scotland Neck and Will B. Pittman of New Bern; and one grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. on Sunday, January 10, at 1921 Clarksville Drive, Scotland Neck, N.C.
JOE T. PRIVETTE SR.
SPRING HOPE -- Joe T. Privette Sr., 71, of 2488 Wiley Road, died Friday, January 8, 1999, at Nash General Hospital.
A graveside service will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. from the Bunn City Cemetery in Bunn by Rev. Dennis Sherrod. Mr. Privette was a World War II Veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Weathers Privette of the home; two daughters, Brenda Lawson of Holly Springs; Ann Sherrod of Bailey; two sons, Joe T. Privette Jr. of Spring Hope; Jimme Farris Privette of Zebulon; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Spring Hope Funeral Home Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. and other times at the home.
CHARLES R. RODWELL III
WARRENTON -- Charles Ray "Charlie' Rodwell III, 56, died at his home in Sacramento, CA on Jan. 5. Charlie was the son of the late Charles Ray Rodwell Jr. and Katherine Register Rodwell of Warrenton.
Funeral service 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999 at the funeral home. Burial at Fairview Cemetery.
He is survived by a son, Charles Ray Rodwell IV of Sacramento; daughter, Katherine Rodwell Clapp of Woodbridge, VA; sisters, Lucy Hundley of Gulfport, FL, and Ella Oden of Hatteras, NC; brother, Bob Rodwell of Raleigh; two grandchildren; and six nephews.
Charlie was a 1964 graduate of VMI, and Army Captain, and a 22 year employee of Electronic Data Systems.

FLOYD "BOB" STRICKLAND
APEX -- Floyd "Bob" Strickland, 63, of Apex-Barbecue Rd., died Wednesday, January 6th, at Triangle Hospice of Hillsborough. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He retired in September 1997, with 32 years of service as a long distance driver, from Cavalier Storage, Norfolk, VA. He worked part-time with KDB in Cary from January 1998 until his health would no longer allow it. His funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, January 10th in the Apex Funeral Home chapel, 511 W. Williams St. (Hwy. 55), in Apex. Burial will follow in the Apex Cemetery. Dr. Andrew Pickens will officiate the services.
Surviving are his wife of 29 years, Linda G. Strickland; daughter, Linda W. Annunziata and husband Bob of Apex; stepsons, Wayne Bryant and Gary Bryant, both of Rocky Mount; brothers, Homer "Junior" Strickland of Wilmington, Jim Strickland of San Antonio, TX; two granddaughters; one great-grandson.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. on Saturday, January 9th at the Apex Funeral Home.

SARAH C. TELLEFSEN
WILSON -- Sarah Catherine Tellefsen, eight months old, died Friday, January 8, 1999.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. James McKinnon officiating. Burial will be private.
Sarah is survived by her parents Eric and Cathy Tellefsen; sister, Elizabeth Tellefsen of the home; grandparents, Tom and Betty Marshall of Wilson and Harriet Tellefsen of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service.

CHARLES H. WILLIAMSON
BLACK CREEK -- Charles Harvey Williamson, 72, of 305 Branch Street, died Saturday, January 9, 1999, in Wilson Memorial Hospital. Funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday, January 11, 1999, from the Chapel of the Shingleton Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Wilson. Mr. Williamson was a World War II veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Shelby Jean Vick Williamson of the home; one daughter, Brenda W. Goff of Wilson; two sons, Charles Williamson of Jacksonville, NC; Brian Williamson of the home; two sisters, Esther W. Williamson of Wilson; Estelle W. Chaney of Swansboro; four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Shingleton Funeral Home, Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. and other times at the home of Brenda Goff, 2204 Village Drive, Wilson, and the home of Shelby Jean Williamston, 305 Branch Street, Black Creek.
SARA H. WILLIS
MOREHEAD CITY -- Sara Herring Willis, 84, died Saturday, January 9, 1999 in Morehead City at Carteret General Hospital.
With her associate degree in teaching, she began a 40-year career of teaching and devotion to first grade youngsters. Although her first teaching years were in Smyrna, she spent three years in Greene County before returning to Carteret County, where she became known as "Miss Sara."
A highlight of her career occurred in 1973 when she was named first runner-up for District 14 in the State Teacher of the Year program. She retired from teaching at Morehead City Elementary School in 1975.
Mr. & Mrs. Willis were marriedApril 3, 1941, in Goldsboro at the First Christian Church. They lived a short time in Goldsboro, then returned to Morehead City and have lived there ever since. They have a daughter, Jonibel Willis, who is an Area Superintendent in the Wake County School System.
In 1966, she was one of 12 charter members of Carteret County's Alpha Chi Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, the International Sorority for Women Educators. She served as the chapter's third president, 1970-1972, attended all North Carolina conventions from 1966-1987, attended all international Alpha Delta Kappa conventions from 1971-1987, and attended southeastern regional conventions, 1971-1987.
In 1980 she was among those instrumental in the organizing of a North Carolina Fidelis Delta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, the group for retired educators. She served as this chapter's first president, and has since served as vice president, chaplain, and treasurer. She has also served as corresponding secretary of the chapter.
At First United Methodist Church in Morehead City, Mrs. Willis has served as president of Jacquelyn Eure Church School class and as a member of the church administration board, as well as being active in the Wednesday night family program and supper.
Since 1975, she has been a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and associate member of National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
She delivered Meals on Wheels from 1975 until 1980. She is a charter member of the Carteret County Historical Association. In her endeavor to serve the people of the community, Mrs. Willis visited the Morehead City Rest Home every day from 1978 through 1988.
She was a member of the North Carolina Extension Homemakers Association, Inc., having been in the Crab Point chapter since 1975.
Surviving Mrs. Willis is her husband, John D. Willis; daughter, Jonibel Willis of Raleigh; sister, Betty Hodges of Mt. Olive; and brother, Jarvis Herring of Beaufort.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, January 11, 1999 in Bayview Cemetery, Morehead City, with Dr. Milton Gilbert officiating.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
The family will receive friends 4:30-5:30 p.m. Sunday, January 10, 1999 at Munden Funeral Home & Crematory, Morehead City, NC.
ALFRED WHELESS ABERNETHY
NASHVILLE -- Alfred Wheless Abernethy, 81, died Saturday, January 9, 1999. He was born February 16, 1917, son of the late Julius Edward and Ruth Wheless Abernethy. Mr. Abernethy was preceded in death by his wife, Madge Cooke Abernethy, a brother, John W. "Buddy' Abernethy, a sister, Sarah Francis Abernethy, and half-sisters, Bessie J. Layton and Beatrice V. Abernethy. He was a retired service station owner and operator and a veteran of World War II, where he served in the Phillippines and Korea. Mr. Abernethy was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, and a life-long member of the Nashville United Methodist Church.
Surviving: son and daughter-in-law, A. Wallace and Jean Abernethy of Rocky Mount; daughters, Gloria Smith and Mrs. Ted "Phyllis' Hardee both of Nashville; grandchildren, Lewis E. Hardee III of Nashville, Amy McGilvary of Carrboro, NC and Chris McGilvary of Atlanta, GA; brother, Julius E. Abernethy of Nashville; sisters, Katherine Marie Boone of Nashville and Ruth May Belch of Castalia.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Nashville United Methodist Church with Rev. Lester Jackson and Dr. Arthur Wall officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. at Johnson Chapel, Nashville and other times at 607 E. Washington St., Nashville, NC 27856.
JAMES BATES CASH
WENDELL --James Bates Cash, 69, of 6201 Robertson Pond Road, died late Saturday evening, January 9, 1999 at Raleigh Community Hospital.
James served his country during the Korean Conflict and was a retired parts manager with Ford Motor Products.
Graveside service 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 12, 1999 at Greenmount Cemetery in Wendell.
Surviving wife, Nettie Gray Yelverton Cash; sisters, Frances C. Tyson of Greenville, Margaret C. Cogdell of Goldsboro; brother, Willard Cash of Goldsboro; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive relatives and friends Monday evening, January 11, 1999 from 7-8:30 p.m. at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale and other times at the home.

RENA H. DAVENPORT
WASHINGTON -- Mrs. Rena Harding Davenport, age 82, died Sunday, January 10, 1999 at the Beaufort County Home after being in failing health for several years.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 12, 1999 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Washington, NC followed by burial at Oakdale Cemetery.
Mrs. Davenport, daughter of the late Edmund H. Harding and Katherine B. Harding, was born July 12, 1916 in Washington, NC. She graduated from Washington Public Schools and Saint Mary's College in Raleigh, NC. She was a life-long member of St. Peters's Episcopal Church.
Mrs. Davenport was married
to Julian M. Davenport, Sr. who preceded her in death in 1980. She resided in Washington most of her life. Prior to World War II, she lived and worked in Washington, D.C. She was employed at the BHM Regional Library at the time of her retirement in 1981.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Edmund H. and Glenda C. Davenport of Raleigh, NC and Julian M. and Sue F. Davenport of Greenville, NC; grandchildren, Sarah E. and Rebecca L. Davenport of Greenville, NC; a sister, Katherine H. Hodges; and Carolyn W. Harding of Washington.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at the home of Mrs. Davenport's sister, Mrs. Katherine H. "Kack" Hodges, 320 Sunnyside Drive, Washington.

ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Edna Smith Fitts, died Saturday, January 9, 1999.
Survivors are her husband, Charles Collins Fitts of the home; two sons, Charles "Poochie" Nelson Fitts and wife, Julia Ann, James Collins Fitts and wife, Gail Gautier, all of Roanoke Rapids; a daughter, Ann Wyche Fitts Taylor and husband, Johnny of Greensboro; a brother, James "JV" Smith and wife, Lucille of Roanoke Rapids; grandchildren, Anna Muzette Fitts Kiger and husband Jack of Greensboro, Christopher Taylor Fitts of Darlington, John Collins Fitts of Raleigh, and Taylor Scott Fitts, Chad Nelson Llanden of Greensboro, and Michael Todd Landen and wife, Millie of Whisett.
She is also survived by a foster relationship with Thomas Eldrage Gibson and wife, Joyce; children Susan Blair Gibson Smith and husband, Terry of Weldon, Jeffrey Todd Gibson and wife, Connie and daughter, Sydnee.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 12, 1999 at 11 a.m. at Rosemary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids. Burial will follow in Cedarwood cemetery.

ELEANOR JENKINS HAIRR
RALEIGH -- Eleanor Jenkins Hairr, 76, of Raleigh, died Friday.
She was born April 25, 1922. Mrs. Hairr was a 1943 graduate of East Carolina University. She taught public school in Jamesville, NC, for 14 years. Mrs. Hairr and her husband were members of Longview Baptist Church for 31 years.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's. St. Burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
She is survived by her husband, Vaden B. Hairr; daughter, Janet Hairr of Raleigh; brother, Willis D. Jenkins of Virginia Beach, Va; sister, Maggie Jenkins Early of Virginia Beach, Va; grandson, Robert C. Manuel Jr. of Raleigh; and several nephews and nieces.

JAMES B. "BUCK" IVEY SR.
ELBERON -- James Beall "Buck" Ivey, Sr., 83, a resident of Surry Co. died Saturday, January 9, 1999 in Smithfield, VA. Born in Wayne County, NC, Mr. Ivey was the son of the late John William Ivey, Sr., and Clair Celese Beall Ivey. He was a member and Deacon of Grace Bible Church, Elberon and was employed as an accountant, retiring as Treasurer of the D. O. Smith Beauty Supply Co. in Raleigh, NC.
Mr. Ivey is survived by his wife, Retha Revels Ivey; a son, Pastor James B. Ivey, Jr. of Elberon; a sister, Rebecca Craddock of Raleigh, NC; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 12, 1999 in Purviance Funeral Home Chapel, Wakefield with Pastor James B. Ivey, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Mill Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.
