VIRGINIA M. STURDIVANT
CARRBORO -- Virginia Miles Sturdivant, 75, 423 South Greensboro St. died Monday at UNC Hospital after an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late Irene Kirkpatrick and Kemp Miles both deceased, also one brother Mr. Don Miles deceased.
She was a native of Alamance County, a member of Carrboro United Methodist Church, retired employee of Chapel Hill Cleaners.
Survivors: a daughter, Mrs. Kaye Martinez and husband Luis of the home; a son, Mr. Douglas Sturdivant of Raleigh; a grandson, Tyler Martinez of the home; a brother, Mr. James Miles and wife Lurlene of Durham; a sister-in-law Mrs. Elizabeth Miles of Durham.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Walker's Funeral Home in Chapel Hill.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Carrboro United Methodist Church by Rev. Daniel Earnhardt. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery in Durham.

LOUNELL JORDAN TANNERY
RALEIGH -- Mrs. Loundell Jordan Tannery, 74, of Raleigh, died Monday, March 8, 1999 in Rex Hospital. Mrs. Tannery was born in Wake Co. on March 12, 1924, the daughter of the late Joseph Herman and Audrey Bertha Jordan. Mrs. Tannery was a member of the Six Forks Baptist Church.
Surviving: husband, John Spence Tannery, Sr.; sons, John S. Tannery Jr. of Waxhaw, Joseph A. and James J. Tannery, both of Raleigh, Jerold C. Tannery of Garner; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, March 11, 1999 in the Six Forks Baptist Church by Dr. Greg Lawson. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's St., Raleigh.

MADELINE GAINES TOWNSEND
GOLDSBORO -- Madeline Gaines Townsend, 74, died Monday, March 8, 1999. She was born Madeline Marie Gaines in Sheffield, Alabama, on September 29, 1924 to Henry Pendleton Gaines and Daisy Westin Gaines. Mrs. Townsend was a 1946 graduate of the Womans College of the University of North Carolina, now UNC-Greensboro.
She is survived by her husband of fifty-two years, Wesley Thompson Townsend of Goldsboro; a son, Wesley Gaines Townsend of Wilmington; a sister, Helene Gaines Evans of Little Rock, Arkansas.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, March 11, at their home on Cashwell Drive in Goldsboro.
Funeral arrangements by Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.

MYRTLE F. WELLS
ROCK RIDGE -- Myrtle Fulghum Neal Wells, 87, died March 9, 1999. She was born November 2, 1911.
Funeral, 11 a.m. Thursday, Buckhorn United Methodist Church with the Rev. William S. Hoyle officiating. Burial, Buckhorn Cemetery.
Survivors: daughter, Betty Neal Simpson of Rock Ridge; sons, W. Harold Neal of Rock Ridge, C. Fred Neal of Wilson, R. David Neal of Rock Ridge; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Thomas Neal.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. Wednesday Joyner's Funeral Home, 4100 U.S. 264 West other times the family will be at 7223 NC Hwy. 42 W. Lucama, NC.

JULIAN B. WILLIFORD
BEULAVILLE - Julian Beaty Williford, age 82, died March 8, 1999, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.
Funeral, Wednesday, March 10, 1999, 2:00 p.m. Community Funeral Home Chapel, Beulaville. Burial, East Duplin Memorial Gardens, Beulaville.
Surviving: wife, Ethel Hollingsworth Williford, Beulaville; daughter, Marci W. Lanier of Beulaville; son, Benny Julian Williford of Raleigh; sisters, Dorothy W. Long of Fayetteville, Pat W. Clark of Jacksonville; brother, Elwood Williford of Portsmouth, VA; grandchildren, Jay Lanier and Michelle Lanier Brown, both of Beulaville, Brad Williford of Greenville, Emily Williford and Kent Williford, both of Raleigh.

W. GLENN HORTON
RALEIGH - William Glenn Horton, 57, of Raleigh, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999.
Mr. Horton was born in Wake County, the son of the late William T. and Elizabeth F. Horton.
Mr. Horton was a member of Masters Masonic Lodge #754, Board of Directors of Midstate Safety Council and of New Hope Baptist Church.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 1999 in New Hope Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Fuquay-Varina, NC.
He is survived by his wife, Gail S. Horton; sons, William G. Horton Jr. of Garner and Patrick A. Horton of Utah; two stepsons, Jerry T. Blanchard Jr., and Brantley J. Blanchard; a brother, Ronnie Horton of High Point; a sister, Frances Christmas of Raleigh; and six grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m., Friday, April 2, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Millbrook Road.
Flowers are welcomed and memorials may be made to the Oxford Home for Children, 500 College St., Oxford, NC 27565.

VICKIE EATON SCROGGINS
YOUNGSVILLE - Mrs. Vickie Eaton Scroggins, 40, of Moncks Corner, SC, formerly of Youngsville expired on Sunday due to an automobile accident.
The funeral service will be professionally conducted on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Old Liberty Baptist Church in Youngsville with the burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Patricia Eaton Hardy, 755 Moores Pond Road in Youngsville, NC.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her loving husband, Mr. Donald Juan Scroggins Sr.; three children: Johnny (Nealie) Eaton of Goose Creek, SC., Kaneshia C. Scroggins and Donald J. Scroggins Jr. of the home; two grandchildren: Davelle and Tiana Eaton; four sisters, Mrs. Mary E. McGee of Raleigh, NC, Mrs. Shirley E. Horton of Garner, NC, Mrs. Patricia E. Hardy of Youngsville, NC and Joyce E. Okonny of Macon, GA; eight brothers, Mr. Percy B. Eaton Jr. of Youngsville, NC, (retired) Master Sergeant Earlie D. Eaton of Warner Robbins, GA, Mr. Jessie L. Eaton of Warner Robbins, GA., Mr. Mark Eaton of Columbia, S.C., Mr. Luke T. Eaton of Raleigh, NC, Mr. Mickey Q. Eaton of Louisburg, NC, Mr. Marty Eaton of Youngsville, NC, Mr. Christopher A. Eaton of Raleigh, NC; mother-in-law, Mrs. Noami R. Scroggins and of Strawberry, SC and father-in-law Zane Scroggins of Dorchester, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, six sisters-in-law and seven brothers-in-law, and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

W. HOWARD TRUELOVE
HOLLY SPRINGS - William Howard Truelove, 79, a retired Dept. of Correction, manager died Tuesday. Funeral 11 a.m. Friday at Carolina Memorial Baptist Church in Thomasville. Burial in Holly Hill Cemetery, Thomasville.
Mr. Truelove was employed with the Dept. of Correction from 1963 to 1982. He retired as manager of Fugitive and Extradiction. He was also employed with The City of Thomasville for 8 years. He received the certificate Order of The Long Leaf Pine from Gov. Robert W. Scott.
Surviving: wife, G. Truelove; daughters, Doris Everhart and husband Buddy of Thomasville, Peggy Nuckles and husband Steve of Greensboro, Pat Harris and husband Hal of Kernersville; son, Thomas Howard Truelove and wife Kathy of Louisburg; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren: sisters, Clyde Wilkie of Apex and Marie Mason of Fuquay-Varina; brothers, Joe Truelove of Thomasville and Norwood Truelove of Fuquay-Varina.
The family request memorial contributions be made to Carolina Memorial Baptist Church in Thomasville or the Harvest Church in Apex.

MARY J. WEEKS
RALEIGH - Mary Johnson Weeks, 75, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999.
Mrs. Weeks was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Weeks, Jr., daughter Peggy Jane, and son Jeremiah.
She was born in Edgecombe County, graduated from Barium Springs School, and was trained in nursing at Rocky Mount Sanitorium. The Weeks' came to Raleigh in 1941. She was a very dedicated housewife and mother.
Surviving are her daughter, Sarah Catherine Weeks; sisters, Martha Boulanger of Easthampton, MA, Lucy Barton of Harkers Island, NC, and Goddaughter, Tonya Templeton Day of Raleigh.
The funeral service is 11 a.m. Friday in the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Raleigh Memorial Park.
Flowers are welcomed or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 11 S. Boylan Ave., Raleigh, NC 27603.

LUCILLLE MAE B. CARTER
DENTON - Lucille Mae Braxton Carter, 91, died Tuesday. She was a supervisor at Burlington Mills for over 20 years. A memorial service was held 7 p.m. Thursday in Denton. Graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday in Memorial Park, Burlington.
Surviving: one grandchild, Marcie Baker of Cary; two great-grandchildren.

PHILLIP BARRY CARTER
ZEBULON - Phillip Barry Carter, 52, of 7620 Martin Road, died Monday, March 31, 1999.
Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 1999 at Union Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Beulah Christian Baptist Church Cemetery off Mitchell Mill Road.
Surviving: wife, Pearl Shadrach Carter; son, Brad Carter of the home; brothers, Charles Carter of Pilot and Wayne Carter of Zebulon; sisters, Janice Tant of Zebulon, Faye Poe of Youngsville, Sue Wood of Spring Hope and Paula Mitchell of Holly Springs; stepmother, Dorothy Carter of Zebulon.
Visitation will be Friday night from 7-9 p.m. at 1201 N. Arendell Ave., Zebulon, NC 269-9377.

FOLLIE CHOPLIN
WAKE FOREST - Follie Choplin, 77, of 281 Hill Street, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999 at Wake Medical Center. He was born in Granville County and was the son of the late Ollie and Meta Davis Choplin. He worked at Royall Cotton Mill for many years and retired from C. C. Mangum Construction Company.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, April 3, 1999 in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home with the Rev. Aaron Leonard officiating. Burial will follow in Wake Forest Cemetery.
Mr. Choplin is survived by his companion of 35 years, Ola Williams; sister, Luzelia Jones of Wake Forest; son, Donald Bennett Williams and his wife, Debbie of Youngsville; stepsons, Robert Wayne Williams and his wife, Rhonda, Billy Joe Williams and his wife, Joann, and Charles Earl Williams, all of Wake Forest; stepdaughter, Teresa Williams O'Brien and her husband, Arch of Wake Forest; daughters, Carolyn Holmes and her husband, David, and Faye Marie Holmes of Wake Forest; granddaughters, Krystal Michelle Williams and Tiffany Lien Stone of Wake Forest, Elizabeth Ariel Williams, Prissilla Marie Williams and Summer Nicole Proctor of Youngsville, Katlin Murray of Franklin County; grandsons, Bo Stallings of Youngsville and Anthony Dave Holmes of Wake Forest; great-grandchildren, Renae Holmes and Jacob Holmes of Wake Forest.
The family will receive friends at 7-8:30 p.m. Friday evening at Bright Funeral Home.

JAMES C. CHRISTMAS
CLAYTON - James Cleveland Christmas, 57, of 300A Ranch Road, died Thursday. He was a member of Oakley Grove Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and former president of the usher board.
Funeral 1 p.m. Sunday, Oakley Grove Baptist Church. Burial, Forest Hill Cemetery, Clayton.
Surviving: wife, Betty Christmas of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Helenand James C. Johnson of Fuquay-Varina; grandson, Christopher L. Johnson; sisters, Alice and Ethel Logan, both of Silver Springs, MD, Lorine Langham of San Antonio, TX., Doris Avery of MD; brothers, Columbus Christmas of Fayetteville, Phillip Christmas of El Paso, TX.
Visitation 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

Survivors: son, Ezra Maxwell Fitz-Gerald of Wilson; daughter-in-law, Della Fitz-Gerald of Wilson; ex-wife, Elizabeth White of Richmond, VA; sister-in-law, Mildred Fitz-Gerald of Wilson.

HELEN WHITE GARDNER
RALEIGH - Helen White Gardner, 76, of 816 Colleton Road, died Wednesday at Wake Medical Center.
Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Brown Wynne Funeral Home, Saint Mary's Street. Burial will be 3 p.m. at Duke Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery, Justice, NC.
Surviving are her sons, Harry White Gardner and Lawrence Edwin Gardner, both of Raleigh; brothers, Thornton White of Sarasota, Fla., and Carlos White of Louisburg; sister, Aurilla Walker of Lacrosse, Va.; two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. on Friday.
