BEN L. ARMSTRONG
PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA -- Ben Lindsey Armstrong, 75, of Pretoria, South Africa, died Saturday, January 2, 1999 after a long battle with cancer.
A native of Raleigh, he graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School, attended NC State University and Carolina before joining the Army Air Corps in 1942. During WWII he married Hilah White; also of Raleigh, and trained hundreds of pilots of Tomahawks, Mustangs and Thunderbolts. After the war he attended Ringling Bros. School of Art in Sarasota, FL where he studied with Hilton Leach and Ben Stahl. In 1951 he was recalled to the Air Force at Langley Air Force Base where he designed the shield for the Tactical Air Command. He was later assigned as flight commander of the 531st Fighter Bomber Squadron, a member of NATO's European defenses stationed at Chambley, France. As his reputation for being an excellent artist grew, he was commissioned to improve facilities at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Paris as personal aide to General Norstad, Supreme Allied Commander. This role led to his appointment as aide to General Schriever, chief of staff of the US missile program in Washington, DC. In 1963 he was stationed in Pretoria, SA, for four years as the liaison officer and head of the missile tracking station. After two tours of duty in Vietnam flying combat in "Spooky's" as squadron commander, he retired from the Air Force to live in Pretoria for the rest of his life. There he enjoyed pursuing the rewards of living in Africa, whether in the arena of big game or big minerals. His zest for life led him down many interesting paths.
He is survived by his wife, Magdalena Johanna (Joey), of Pretoria, SA; his son, Allen Armstrong, of Raleigh; his daughters, Lee Davis, and Carla Dennis, also of Raleigh; his grandchildren, Rachel, Paul and Robyn Dennis, of Raleigh; his two brothers, David Armstrong, of Tustin, CA, and Ivan Armstrong, of Anderson, SC.
